5 CHAPTER 1 - The Alive Heart Monitor Overview The Alive Heart Monitor is a data acquisition, wireless transmitter and recording device of patient electrocardiograph (ECG) and acceleration signals. The signals can be stored to an SD memory card on the device and/or transmitted via a Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone, PDA, or PC for real-time display, recording and analysis. 7 Bluetooth Connection BLUE flash Connected to Host device over Bluetooth connection CHAPTER 2 - Operating Instructions Installing or Replacing the Battery The Alive Heart Monitor is powered by a rechargeable NP20 Li-ion battery. The battery will loose capacity over a year or two and should be replaced when operating times are noticeably shorter than usual. Used batteries must be disposed of in accordance with the national requirements in the country of use. To install the battery: 1. Press the back cover release latch on the heart monitor to remove the rear cover. 2. Slide the battery into place with the battery terminals aligned. 3. Replace the battery cover. Charging the Battery The power indicator will flash red when the battery is low and has less than 60 minutes operating time left. CHAPTER 2 - Operating Instructions 7

8 To remove and recharge the battery: 1. Press the back cover release latch on the heart monitor to remove the rear cover and access the battery. 2. Remove the battery and place in the battery charger supplied. 3. The battery charger will show red while charging and green when fully charged. Turning the Heart Monitor ON and OFF To turn the Alive Heart Monitor ON Press and release the power button. The power light will turn on for several seconds while initialising, then flash periodically. To turn the Alive Heart Monitor OFF Press and release the power button. The power light will turn off. CHAPTER 3 - Lead wire and Electrode Connection Electrodes Good electrical contact between the electrodes and the skin is essential for a high quality ECG signal. The skin surface should be cleaned and prepared according to Holter or stress-testing methods. Use low impedance liquid gel electrodes designed for long term monitoring. Alive Technologies recommends Blue Sensor L electrodes from Ambu ( Determine Electrode Site Any standard lead configuration may be used with the Alive Heart Monitor. The diagram below shows two different electrode placements that typically achieve good results. However, optimum electrode placement varies according to patient shape and size, and the desired ECG view. Electrode Placement Examples CHAPTER 3 - Lead wire and Electrode Connection 8

9 Prepare Skin Shave or clip excessive hair at the electrode site. Clean the skin at the electrode site with alcohol to remove dirt and oils. Abrade the skin slightly. Dry the skin with a tissue. Electrode Placement Apply electrodes after removing the backing. Press the electrodes adhesive border firmly. Discard any electrode having dry gel, or not firmly adhering to the skin. Connect Lead Wires Attach lead wires to each electrode. Make a loop in the lead wire and tape near the electrode to provide strain relief and to minimize artifact and noise in the recording. Leave enough slack in the loop to allow for normal patient movement without pulling on the electrodes. Connect lead wires to the heart monitor CHAPTER 4 - Monitoring and Recording The Alive Heart Monitor can be used with a Bluetooth mobile phone, PDA or PC for wireless monitoring and recording of ECG and accelerometer signals. It can also record data to an internal SD Memory card without having to be connected to a receiving device. Recording to SD Memory Card You can use an SD memory card to store ECG and accelerometer signals on the heart monitor. A memory card can record data for days or weeks depending on the capacity of the memory card used. Each time the heart monitor is powered on, or if you replace the battery, it starts a new recording. Each recording is stored in a new file on the memory card. When using an SD memory card with the Alive Heart Monitor, there are some restrictions: The heart monitor only supports FAT16 formatted SD memory cards. The SD card must not contain other files or folders and should be re-formatted before using it in the heart monitor. Before you can start a recording on the SD card, you need to: Install a memory card reader if it is not already built into your computer. CHAPTER 4 - Monitoring and Recording 9

10 Format the SD card. Insert the card into the heart monitor. Setting the Clock on the Heart Monitor The Alive Heart Monitor has a real-time clock that enables time-stamping of files recorded to the SD card. The configuration utility AHMConfig can be used to check or set the time on the monitor. It connects to the Alive Heart Monitor over a Bluetooth connection and also reads and displays the heart monitor s serial number, version, and battery status. The AHMConfig utility runs on a Windows PC or laptop and supports most Bluetooth stacks; see Chapter 6 Using Bluetooth on your PC for details. To Install the AHMConfig utility 1. Run the AHMConfigInstall.exe application from the CD and follow the instructions on your screen. To Set the Time on the Heart Monitor from your PC using the Microsoft Bluetooth stack 1. Turn on the Alive Heart Monitor. 2. From the Windows Start menu, select Programs>Alive Technologies>AHMConfig to start the configuration utility. 3. Select the File>Connect to Heart Monitor menu option. 4. Uncheck the Connect via serial port option and then press the 'Search...' button to search for new Bluetooth devices. 5. Select the AliveECG device from the list of Bluetooth devices and press OK to initiate the connection. 6. Once connected, you can select File>Set Time to synchronise the time in the heart monitor to the PC, or select File>Set Time Manually to set the time manually. To Set the Time on the Heart Monitor from your PC using Widcomm/Broadcom or other non-microsoft Bluetooth stack 1. Turn on the Alive Heart Monitor. CHAPTER 4 - Monitoring and Recording 10

11 2. If you haven t already paired and setup a Bluetooth serial port connection to the heart monitor, then use the Bluetooth Manager on your PC to pair/bond to the Alive Heart Monitor. Refer to the documentation supplied with your Bluetooth adapter or PC about pairing to a Bluetooth device. When asked for a PIN code enter "1111" Make a note of the outgoing serial port for this connection. 3. From the Windows Start menu, select Programs>Alive Technologies>AHMConfig to start the configuration utility. 4. Select the File>Connect to Heart Monitor menu option. 5. Check the Connect via serial port option, then select the Bluetooth serial port noted earlier and press OK to initiate a connection. 6. Once connected, you can select File>Set Time to synchronise the time in the Alive Heart Monitor to the PC, or select File>Set Time Manually to set the time manually. If the main battery is removed, the time is still maintained for a week or more by a small rechargeable backup battery, which allows the main battery to be recharged or changed. If the heart monitor is not used for several weeks the clock will eventually stop and has to be set using the AHMConfig utility. If the clock has stopped all files recorded on the SD card will have a date of 1/1/ :00 am. Formatting the SD Card The Alive Heart Monitor only supports FAT16 formatted SD memory cards. When formatting an SD card from Windows it defaults to FAT32. You must change this to FAT as shown in the image below, and leave the Volume label blank. CHAPTER 4 - Monitoring and Recording 11

12 Installing an SD Memory Card To insert an SD card into the heart monitor: 1. Press the back cover release latch on the heart monitor to remove the rear cover. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Slide the SD Memory card into the holder, with the gold-plated contact area facing down. 4. Replace the battery and attach the back cover to the heart monitor. Starting a Recording on the SD Card After inserting a formatted SD card into the heart monitor, apply electrodes to the patient, and attach lead wires to the electrodes and heart monitor as described in CHAPTER 3 - Lead wire and Electrode Connection. Then turn on the heart monitor to start a recording. The heart monitor will automatically start recording to the SD card when it is powered on and the power light will double flash periodically. Note: A single periodic flash of the power light indicates that it is not recording to SD card. This will occur if the SD card is not inserted correctly, if the SD card is locked or not formatted correctly, or if the memory is full. Monitoring and Recording to a PC, Pocket PC or Smartphone You can use a Bluetooth enabled PC, Pocket PC or Smartphone to connect to the heart monitor for wireless monitoring and recording of ECG and accelerometer signals. To Monitor or Record data to a PC, Pocket PC or Smartphone 1. Apply electrodes to the patient as described in CHAPTER 3 - Lead wire and Electrode Connection. 2. Attach lead wires to the electrodes and connect them to the heart monitor. 3. Turn on the heart monitor. 4. Run the AliveECG software on your PC, Pocket PC or Smartphone and select the Start Monitoring or Start Recording menu option. See Chapter 6, 7 or 8 for more details on using the AliveECG software and setting up a connection to the heart monitor. CHAPTER 4 - Monitoring and Recording 12

13 CHAPTER 5 - Maintenance Cleaning The Alive Heart Monitor and lead wires may be cleaned by wiping the surfaces with a clean cloth moistened with water only. Do not immerse or saturate the Alive Heart Monitor with any liquid because excess fluid could enter the case and damage the electronics. CHAPTER 5 - Maintenance 13

14 CHAPTER 6 - The AliveECG Software for Windows Overview The AliveECG window. Title bar Menu bar Toolbar Status area View tabs View area Shortcut menu The title bar displays the name of the program and the serial number of the connected device. The title bar also contains buttons that you can use to maximize or minimize the window, or close the program. Each menu in the menu bar contains a list of menu items that you can select to perform tasks in AliveECG. The toolbar contains buttons that give you access to common tasks in AliveECG. When connected to a heart monitor, the status area displays information including the connected symbol, battery level of the heart monitor, recording duration, and current heart rate. The view tab lets you select the ECG, heart rate or acceleration view. This area displays the select tab view. In the view area, you can use shortcut menus to access common tasks. You can access the menu by clicking on the view area with your right mouse button. CHAPTER 6 - The AliveECG Software for Windows 14

15 PC Requirements Microsoft Windows 2000/XP or later Bluetooth with Serial Port Profile (SPP) Installation To install AliveECG on your PC 1. Run the AliveECGInstall.exe application and follow the instructions on your screen. Using Bluetooth on your PC Before connecting to the Alive Heart Monitor, your PC must have a Bluetooth adapter installed and enabled. Microsoft s Windows Vista and Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later include built-in Bluetooth support. If using a Microsoft compliant USB Bluetooth adapter, the Microsoft Bluetooth stack is activated as soon as you plug in the adapter. Note: If using a USB Bluetooth adapter you should always plug it into the same USB port. Microsoft Windows installs a new set of drivers for each port and the settings will be unique and different for each USB port. AliveECG works best with the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. You can connect to a heart monitor without having to pair to it and it supports device discovery and selection within the application. However, AliveECG also supports other Bluetooth stacks such as Widcomm/Broadcom and BlueSoleil, through Bluetooth virtual serial ports. If you are using the Widcomm or other non-microsoft Bluetooth stack you need to use the Bluetooth manager to pair or bond to the heart monitor and setup an outgoing Bluetooth serial port connection before you can connect to it. AliveECG can then be configured to use the Bluetooth serial port to connect to the heart monitor. Note: If you have Windows Vista or XP service pack 2 or later and have installed Bluetooth manager software such as Widcomm/Broadcom or BlueSoleil, then you may wish to uninstall it to revert back to the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. The Alive Heart Monitor has a class 1 Bluetooth radio. Class 2 devices have a range of up to 10m. To get the maximum range requires a class 1 Bluetooth adapter. 16 Operation The AliveECG software connects to the Alive Heart Monitor over a wireless Bluetooth connection. It can be used to monitor and record a patients ECG, heart rate, and activity, and device status. Connecting to the Heart Monitor To setup a Connection to the Heart Monitor from your PC when using the Microsoft Bluetooth stack 1. Turn on the Alive Heart Monitor. 2. From the Windows Start menu, select Programs>Alive Technologies>AliveECG to start the application. 3. Select Tools>Options and then select the Connection tab. 4. Uncheck the Connect via serial port option, then press the 'Search...' button to search for new Bluetooth devices. 5. Select the AliveECG device from the list of Bluetooth devices and press OK. 6. Select File>Start Monitoring or press the Play button to initiate a connection. Select File>Stop Monitoring or press the Stop button to stop and disconnect. To setup a Connection to the Heart Monitor from your PC when using Widcomm/Broadcom or other non-microsoft Bluetooth stack 1. Turn on the Alive Heart Monitor. 2. Use the Bluetooth Manager on your PC to pair/bond to the Alive Heart Monitor. Refer to the documentation supplied with your Bluetooth adapter or PC about pairing to a Bluetooth device. When asked for a PIN code enter "1111" Make a note of the outgoing serial port for this connection. 3. From the Windows Start menu, select Programs>Alive Technologies>AliveECG to start the application. 4. Select Tools>Options and then select the Connection tab. 5. Check the Connect via serial port option, then select the Bluetooth serial port noted earlier and press OK. 6. Select File>Start Monitoring or press the Play button to initiate a connection. Select File>Stop Monitoring or press the Stop button to stop and disconnect. Connection Status and Battery Level The connection status and battery level of the heart monitor is shown in the upper left corner of the display. AliveECG is connected to the heart monitor Battery level of the heart monitor. The battery level is only displayed while connected to the heart monitor. Hold the mouse pointer over the battery level indicator to show the percentage. CHAPTER 6 - The AliveECG Software for Windows 16

17 Recording to the PC AliveECG can record ECG and accelerometer signals to your PC or laptop for later review and analysis. While connected to a heart monitor you can start, stop and make multiple recordings. The duration of the recording is displayed in the upper left corner of the display. Each recording is stored in a new file that is named automatically and stored in the same folder as the AliveECG application. To record data to your PC: 1. Apply electrodes to the patient, and attach lead wires to the electrodes and heart monitor as described in CHAPTER Turn on the heart monitor. 3. From the Windows Start menu, select Programs>Alive Technologies>AliveECG to start the application. 4. If you have not setup a connection to a heart monitor or if you wish to connect to a different heart monitor, then follow the previous instructions to setup a connection. 5. Select File>Start Monitoring or press the Play button to initiate a connection to the heart monitor. The connected indicator will be displayed in the status area when a connection is established. 6. Press the Record button or select File>Start Recording to start recording to a new file on the PC. To stop the recording, press the Record button or select File>Stop Recording. While monitoring and connected to the heart monitor, you can start and stop recordings, or press the Stop button to disconnect and stop both monitoring and recording Note: It may take several seconds to make a connection, and longer if you stop and start within a short period. Reviewing The AliveECG application does not have a review option; it is for monitoring and recording only. The conversion utility AtsConvert.exe can be used to convert files from Alive Technologies ATS format to the EDF/EDF+ (European Data Format) or to generate inter beat RR intervals and heart rate values in CSV (comma separated value) format. EDF is a format designed for archive and exchange of Biosignals, often used for sleep analysis. There are several freeware and commercial applications for reviewing the data in EDF format. When generating inter beat RR intervals and heart rate values in CSV format, ATSConvert does not attempt to reject false or outlier RR intervals that can occur if the ECG signal is noisy. The RR intervals and heart rate values are direct measurements from the intervals between beat detections which can include false or missing beat detections and ectopic beats. 18 Monitoring Multiple Patients You can run multiple instances of the AliveECG software to monitor up to seven patients from a single PC or laptop. To setup a PC for connecting to more than one heart monitor, install the AliveECG software into different folders, then run each instance and configure it to connect to a different heart monitor. The configuration settings and recorded data files of each instance are then stored in the different folders. Each instance of the AliveECG software displays the ID of the heart monitor that it connects to in the title bar. Views The AliveECG application has three tabs that you can select to view the realtime ECG, heart rate trend, or accelerometer signals when connected to a heart monitor. The area at the top of the display shows the current heart rate, connection status, battery level and recording duration. ECG View The ECG tab displays the real-time ECG when connected to a heart monitor. You can change the horizontal and vertical scale, invert the ECG signal, or enable a filter to smooth the ECG signal and remove muscle or artifact noise. To change the scale or invert the ECG signal, or to enable or disable the Muscle filter, right click on the ECG window and select from a list of menu items. These options only affect the ECG display and can be turned on or off without affecting the recorded data. You can also change the default display settings in the options. The scale values are only relative. The actual physical height and width will depend on the size and resolution of your display. Note: To save battery power, the heart monitor transmits data in bursts, rather than transmitting continuously. This results in a couple of seconds delay in the displayed ECG signal. 19 Heart Rate View The Heart Rate tab displays a trend of the heart rate. You can change the time scale to display the heart rate over the last 5, 10, 20, 30 minutes or 1, 2, 3, or 5 hours. Acceleration View The Accel tab displays the real-time accelerometer signals. The orientation of the x, y, and z axes on the device is illustrated below. 20 Options The Options window allows you to change general program settings, setup the connection to a heart monitor, and change the default ECG and HR display settings. To display the Options window: 1. From the Tools menu select Options. The Options window is displayed. 2. Click the General, Connection, ECG or HR tab. You can use the SHIFT and TAB keys to select a tab using the keyboard. General Options Beep on QRS Check this option to enable an audible beep for each heart beat on detection of the QRS complex. Muscle Filter Check this option to apply a filter to remove muscle or artifact noise from the ECG signal. This option only affects the ECG display; it does not affect the recorded data. Save Recordings to Enter the path or click the Browse button to select a folder where you wish to save recorded files. By default, recorded files are stored in the same folder as the AliveECG application, which is usually c:\program Files\AliveECG. CHAPTER 6 - The AliveECG Software for Windows 20

21 Connection Options Automatically reconnect Check this option and AliveECG will try to reconnect to the heart monitor if communication is lost. It may take 30 seconds or more to identify that the heart monitor has been disconnected and to then reconnect. Connect via serial port If your Bluetooth adapter uses the Widcomm or other non-microsoft Bluetooth stack, then check this option and select the serial port that has been setup to connect to the heart monitor. Refer to page 16 - Connecting to the Heart Monitor. If your Bluetooth adapter uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack, you can uncheck this option, and then select the heart monitor you wish to connect to from the list of Bluetooth devices, or search for new devices if it is not listed. Serial Port Select the serial port that has been setup to connect to the heart monitor. Refer to page 16 - Connecting to the Heart Monitor. This list is only available if the Connect via serial port option is checked. Bluetooth Device Select the heart monitor that you wish to connect to from the list of Bluetooth devices. If the heart monitor is not listed, then turn on the heart monitor and click the Search button. This list is only available if the Connect via serial port option is unchecked, and requires a Bluetooth adapter that uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. Search Searches for new Bluetooth devices. This button is only available if the Connect via serial port option is unchecked, and requires a Bluetooth adapter that uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. ECG Options Sweep Speed Select the horizontal scale 12.5, 25 or 50 mm/s. Gain Select the vertical scale 5, 10 or 20 mm/mv. CHAPTER 6 - The AliveECG Software for Windows 21

22 Invert ECG Check this option to invert the ECG signal. This option affects the display only. It does not invert the stored data. HR Options X Axis Select the time span of the HR display to show 10, 20, 30 minutes, or 1, 2, 3, or 5 hours of heart rate data. Y Axis Select the minimum and maximum heart rate values of the Y axis. Graph style Selects whether the heart rate values are drawn using a series of connected lines or individual points. CHAPTER 6 - The AliveECG Software for Windows 22

24 Pocket PC Requirements A Bluetooth -enabled Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 or later. 500 KB available program memory Recording data on the Pocket PC requires additional memory (approximately 2 MB per hour). Installation To install AliveECG on your Pocket PC 1. Connect your Pocket PC to a host PC using ActiveSync connection (ActiveSync should be on the CD that came with your Pocket PC or can be downloaded from the Microsoft website). 2. Run the AliveECGInstallPPC.exe application and follow the instructions to install the AliveECG application on your Pocket PC. Operation The AliveECG software connects to the Alive Heart Monitor over a wireless Bluetooth connection. It can be used to monitor a patients ECG, heart rate, activity, and device status, and to record this data for later review. Connecting to the Heart Monitor The Alive Heart Monitor has a class1 Bluetooth radio with a range of up to 100m when connected to a class 1 Bluetooth device. Most Pocket PC s are class 2 devices which have a range of up to 10m. Pocket PCs that do not use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack include: All ipaqs, Dell Axim X50v, and devices using a Bluetooth CF or SD card. Pocket PCs that use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack include: XDA II, imate JAM, SPV M1000, Qtek 2020, SX66, MDA II, Audiovox VX6600 To setup a Connection to the Heart Monitor from your Pocket PC 1. Turn on the Alive Heart Monitor. 2. If your Pocket PC does not use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack Use the Bluetooth Manager on your Pocket PC to pair/bond to the Alive Heart Monitor. Refer to the documentation supplied with your Pocket PC about pairing to a Bluetooth device. When asked for a PIN code enter "1111" Make a note of the outgoing serial port for this connection. 3. On the Pocket PC select Start>Programs>AliveECG to start the application. 4. Select Tools>Options and then select the Connection tab. 5. If your Pocket PC uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. Press the 'Search...' button to search for new Bluetooth devices. Select the AliveECG device from the list of Bluetooth devices and press OK. 25 6. Otherwise, if your Pocket PC does not use the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. Check the Connect via serial port option, then select the Bluetooth serial port noted earlier and press OK. 7. Select Tools>Start Monitoring or press the Play button to initiate a connection. Select Tools>Stop Monitoring or press the Stop button to stop and disconnect. Connection Status and Battery Level The connection status and battery level of the heart monitor is shown in the upper left corner of the display. AliveECG is connected to the heart monitor Battery level of the heart monitor. The battery level is only displayed while connected to the heart monitor. Recording to the Pocket PC AliveECG can record ECG and accelerometer signals to your Pocket PC for later review and analysis. While connected to a heart monitor you can start, stop and make multiple recordings. The duration of the recording is displayed in the upper left corner of the display. Each recording is stored to a new file that is named automatically and stored in the My Documents folder. To record data to your Pocket PC: 1. Apply electrodes to the patient, and attach lead wires to the electrodes and heart monitor as described in CHAPTER Turn on the heart monitor. 3. On the Pocket PC select Start>Programs>AliveECG to start the application. 4. If you have not setup a connection to a heart monitor or if you wish to connect to a different heart monitor, then follow the previous instructions to setup a connection. 5. Select Tools>Start Monitoring or press the Play button to initiate a connection to the heart monitor. The connected indicator will be displayed in the status area when a connection is established. 6. Press the Record button or select Tools>Start Recording to start recording to a new file on the Pocket PC. To stop the recording, press the Record button or select Tools >Stop Recording. While monitoring and connected to the heart monitor, you can start and stop recordings, or press the Stop button to disconnect and stop both monitoring and recording. 26 Reviewing The AliveECG application does not have a review option; it is for monitoring and recording only. The conversion utility AtsConvert.exe can be used to convert files from Alive Technologies ATS format to the EDF/EDF+ (European Data Format) or to generate inter beat RR intervals and heart rate values in CSV (comma separated value) format. EDF is a format designed for archive and exchange of Biosignals, often used for sleep analysis. There are several freeware and commercial applications for reviewing the data in EDF format. When generating inter beat RR intervals and heart rate values in CSV format, ATSConvert does not attempt to reject false or outlier RR intervals that can occur if the ECG signal is noisy. The RR intervals and heart rate values are direct measurements from the intervals between beat detections which can include false or missing beat detections and ectopic beats. Views The AliveECG application has three tabs that you can select to view the real-time ECG, heart rate trend, or accelerometer signals when connected to a heart monitor. The area at the top of the display shows the current heart rate, connection status, battery level and recording duration. ECG View The ECG tab displays the real-time ECG when connected to a heart monitor. You can change the horizontal and vertical scale, invert the ECG signal, or enable a filter to smooth the ECG signal and remove muscle or artifact noise. To change the scale or invert the ECG signal, or to enable or disable the Muscle filter, tap and hold the stylus on the ECG window and select from a list of menu items. These options only affect the ECG display and can be turned on or off without affecting the recorded data. You can also change the default display settings in the options. The scale values are only relative. The actual physical height and width will depend on the size and resolution of your display Note: To save battery power, the heart monitor transmits data in bursts, rather than transmitting continuously. This results in a couple of seconds delay in the displayed ECG signal. Heart Rate View The Heart Rate tab displays a trend of the heart rate. 27 To change the time scale, tap and hold the stylus on the Heart Rate window and select from a list of menu items to display the heart rate over the last 5, 10, 20, 30 minutes or 1, 2, 3, or 5 hours. To change the minimum and maximum heart rate values on the Y-axis, select Tools>Options>HR and select the minimum and maximum Y-axis values, then tap OK. Acceleration View The Accel tab displays the real-time accelerometer signals. The orientation of the x, y, and z axes on the device is illustrated below. Options The Options window allows you to change general program settings, setup the connection to a heart monitor, and change the default ECG and HR display settings. To display the Options window: 1. Select Tools>Options or tap the options button in the menu bar. The Options window is displayed. 2. Select the General, Connection, ECG or HR tab to select the desired group of settings. General Options Beep on QRS Check this option to enable an audible beep for each heart beat on detection of the QRS complex. Muscle Filter Check this option to apply a filter to remove muscle or artifact noise from the ECG signal. This option only affects the ECG display; it does not affect the recorded data. 28 Keep Backlight On Check this option to keep the backlight on while connected to the heart monitor. For long term recording this option should be unchecked to save battery power on the Pocket PC. When unchecked the backlight and screen timeout is determined by the power management settings on the Pocket PC. Save Recordings to Recordings can be saved to the PDA s Internal memory or to a storage card if available. Select where you wish to store recorded files. If the default Internal memory option is selected or a storage card is not available, recordings are saved to the device s My Documents folder. Connection Options Automatically reconnect Check this option and AliveECG will try to reconnect to the heart monitor if communication is lost. It may take 30 seconds or more to identify that the heart monitor has been disconnected and to then reconnect. Connect via serial port If your Pocket PC uses the Widcomm or other non-microsoft Bluetooth stack, then check this option and select the serial port that has been setup to connect to the heart monitor. Refer to page 24 - Connecting to the Heart Monitor. If your Pocket PC uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack, you can uncheck this option, and then select the heart monitor you wish to connect to from the list of Bluetooth devices, or search for new devices if it is not listed. Serial Port Select the serial port that has been setup to connect to the heart monitor. Refer to page 24 - Connecting to the Heart Monitor. This list is only available if the Connect via serial port option is checked. Bluetooth Device Select the heart monitor that you wish to connect to from the list of Bluetooth devices. If the heart monitor is not listed, then turn on the heart monitor and tap the Search button. This list is only available if the Connect via serial port option is unchecked, and requires a Pocket PC that uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. Search Searches for new Bluetooth Devices. This button is only available if the Connect via serial port option is unchecked, and requires a Pocket PC that uses the Microsoft Bluetooth stack. 29 ECG Options Sweep Speed Select the horizontal scale 12.5, 25 or 50 mm/s. Gain Select the vertical scale 5, 10 or 20 mm/mv. Invert ECG Check this option to invert the ECG signal. This option affects the display only. It does not invert the stored data. HR Options X Axis Select the time span of the HR display to show 10, 20, 30 minutes, or 1, 2, 3, or 5 hours of heart rate data. Y Axis Select the minimum and maximum heart rate values of the Y axis. When connected to a heart monitor, the status area displays information including the connected symbol, battery level of the heart monitor, recording duration, and current heart rate. Displays the name of the current view; ECG, heart rate or acceleration. Select the Next View softkey to change views. This area displays the selected view. The left softkey selects the next view. The right softkey displays a list of menu options. In the view area, you can use shortcut menus to access common tasks. To access the menu tap and hold the stylus in the view area. Smartphone Requirements A Bluetooth -enabled Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 or later. 500 KB available program memory. 31 Installation To install AliveECG on your Smartphone 1. Connect your Smartphone to your desktop PC (or notebook) using ActiveSync connection (ActiveSync should be on the CD that came with your Smartphone or can be downloaded from the Microsoft website). 2. Run the AliveECGInstallSMP.exe installer and follow the instructions to install the AliveECG application on your Smartphone. Operation The AliveECG software connects to the Alive Heart Monitor over a wireless Bluetooth connection. It can be used to monitor a patients ECG, heart rate, activity, and device status, and to record this data for later review. Connecting to the Heart Monitor The Alive Heart Monitor has a class 1 Bluetooth radio with a range of up to 100m when connected to a class 1 Bluetooth device. Most Smartphone s are class 2 devices which have a range of up to 10m. To setup a Connection to the Heart Monitor from your Smartphone 1. Turn on the Alive Heart Monitor. 2. Alive Heart Monitors are listed with the name AliveECG nnnnnn where nnnnnn is the first six digits of the serial number of the heart monitor.
