About this product: TOUCHLOCK compact is a single door, single keypad access control system. The keypad is suitable for sheltered external and internal installations. The keypad is suited to medium use applications (less than 50 uses per day). The unit is self contained with the control unit, or decision making electronics, housed within the keypad itself. The unit can be powered by both ac and dc 12V power supplies. The output to the electric release is 12Vdc solid state limited to 500mA continuous and 750mA intermittent (7 seconds). 240V ac TOUCHLOCK compact Electric release Black wires White wires Unswitched mains spur Transformer Green wires TOUCHLOCK compact is not compatible with an exit button facility. It is designed for use with mechanical egress. For this reason maglocks cannot be used with TOUCHLOCK compact. There are two outputs, one for the electric lock and one that can be used for a door bell, duress alarm, keypad tamper, see Programming the TOUCHLOCK. TOUCHLOCK compact is available separately or in a kit containing a power supply and electric release. All system settings and the user codes are changed via the keypad. Any number of TOUCHLOCK systems may be installed on a site. For higher use, external applications TOUCHLOCK compact stainless steel (Sales code ) is more suited. TOUCHLOCK switch (Sales code ) is an alternative product that has a separate keypad and Page 2
control unit. It has two keypad capability for two way access control, voltage free relay contacts for the electric lock, and increased functionality. For more information contact our technical helpline. Fitting the TOUCHLOCK: Using the template provided, mark and drill holes for the cable and the two screws. Enlarge the upper part of the cable hole as shown in the diagram below: Keypad 6x3/4" Wall plugs Cable M2 x 12 Fitting the membrane keypad Tap in the small wall plugs and screw the No.6 x ¾ to the wall. Leave the heads of the screws around 2mm from the face of the wall. Thread the cables through the wall. Locate each screw into its keyhole on the back of the keypad and slide the keypad downwards to engage. Remove and adjust the screws as necessary. Tighten down the M2 x 12 screw provided. Which release? TOUCHLOCK compact is for use with 12Vdc fail open or fail closed electric releases. For a fail closed release, such as the one provided in the TOUCHLOCK compact kit, the current rating of the lock is limited to 750mA. For a fail open release the current rating of the lock is limited to 500mA. If the rating of the lock exceeds these limitations, then it cannot be used with the TOUCHLOCK compact. TOUCHLOCK compact is not compatible with an exit button facility. It is designed for use with mechanical egress. For this reason maglocks cannot be used with TOUCHLOCK compact. Page 3
The TOUCHLOCK compact keypad uses a small residual current to detect the presence of an electric release, used for the data reset procedure. For this reason TOUCHLOCK compact must not be connected directly to a relay coil. Fitting the electric release: The following fitting instructions are for a standard format electric release such as the one provided in the TOUCHLOCK compact kit. For other forms of electric locks consult the manufacturers fitting instructions. Decide on a suitable position for the electric release on the door frame. Remove the cover of the release. Using the 3.5mm cable clips provided, tack the white cable from the TOUCHLOCK to the release and connect the two wires to the terminals on the release. Polarity does not matter when using a standard 12V dc release. Replace the cover of the release. If using the rim fitting, do not refit the side plate, this is not used. Screw the release to the door frame using the No.8 X 1 screws provided. Door frame Rim Mortice No. 8X1" screws Cover screws Release Door Release Door Page 4
Wiring the Unit: The black wires: Power input. The TOUCHLOCK can be powered with V ac or dc the polarity is not important. The white wires: Release output. The output is 12V dc. For our standard 12V releases, polarity is not important, but for releases other than this, the ribbed wire is positive. The green wires: Bell output. The default setting for these wires is to give a 12V dc output when the door bell on the keypad is pressed. Alternatively the unit can be programmed to energise the green wires for door open time, when a duress code (user code plus 1), is entered. The unit can also be programmed to energise these wires when either the door is opened or when the keypad is tampered with. For the programming procedures, see Programming the TOUCHLOCK. The TOUCHLOCK compact is not suitable for connection to an exit button. It is designed to be used with a mechanical egress, i.e. an internal latch release. Backup power: If the TOUCHLOCK is powered solely by a transformer, during a power cut, the unit will retain its memory, but will not be able to open the door for the duration of the power cut. A backup power supply uses a battery to power the unit in the event of mains power loss. The size of the battery is measured in Ah (Ampere Hours) and will determine how long the unit can operate using battery power alone. For example: A TOUCHLOCK is operating in fail open mode, drawing around 50mA. The maglock that it is operating draws around 450mA. This gives us a total of 500mA or 0.5A. If the backup battery fitted is rated at 1Ah, then substituting these figures into the equation below gives us a backup power time of 1 hour and 36 minutes. Backup Power Time = Battery Capacity (Ah) X 0.8 (TOUCHLOCK current + lock current) (A) The figure, 0.8, in the equation above is a safety factor and is included because the battery cannot supply full power for the last 20% of its life. If the TOUCHLOCK is operating a fail closed release, then the backup power time is longer. Page 5
Initialising the unit: When the TOUCHLOCK is first powered up it will be set to the factory default setting. The master code is set at the factory and is as shown on the front cover of this document. These are as follows: User code Master code serial number Squeak setting... Door bell and key press activated Green wire setting... Door bell setting User code security... User code changes user code (low security) Lock wire setting...12vdc fail closed release Door open time... 7 seconds When the unit is data reset the master code will be set at Operation: The keypad has two LEDs on its face, green and red. The green LED is normally off and energises for the door open time to indicate that a valid code has been entered. The red LED is normally on to indicate power to the unit. Both the user and the master code will open the door. If 20 incorrect key presses are made, the unit will shut down for around 5 minutes, giving an audible warning every 10 seconds. The green wires can be configured to supply 12Vdc to an alarm if the duress code is entered, see Programming the TOUCHLOCK. The duress code is the user code plus 1, i.e. a user code of will give a duress code of Page 6
Reset Instructions: The TOUCHLOCK will remember its settings in the event of a power cut. To return the unit to the factory default settings, a data reset must be done. For a list of the factory settings, see Initialising the unit. The procedure for doing a data reset is as follows: - Turn off the power to the unit. - Disconnect the two green and two white wires and ensure that they are not connecting. - Hold down the 3 button on the keypad whilst readministering the power to the unit. When the power is applied, release button 3. - Four bleeps will indicate that the unit has successfully data reset. - Wire the unit back to its original configuration. When the unit is data reset, the master code is set to When a data reset is performed, the user code must be changed before any programming is done. The procedure for doing this is as follows: Changing the user code: - Type in the existing user code: Hold down key 1 for 10 seconds - Enter the new 4 digit code - Two bleeps indicates that the user code is now changed The other settings return to the factory default, see Initialising the unit. Page 7
Programming the TOUCHLOCK: The flow chart below illustrates the programming steps required to configure the unit. When a programming function is complete, the TOUCHLOCK will acknowledge with two bleeps. If an incorrect button has been pressed, you can cancel programming by pressing the bell button. You may now start again.
