1 Welcome to BFI Wien! In order to provide our customers with the possibility to learn independently of time and place, some of our courses are supported by our learning management system Moodle. There, you can communicate with your instructors and your fellow students, work on and hand in assignments or prepare for exams by solving exercises. In addition, the learning management system is used as cloud storage: you can access the course documentation like scripts, handouts and presentations and even store your own documents and notes. The platform is also optimized for mobile devices like tablets or smartphones. This guideline provides information about the user interface and the most important features of moodle we hope you enjoy expanding your knowledge together with BFI! Seite 1 von 21

3 1. How to access the platform You can access Moodle via or by using the link on our website Seite 3 von 21
4 2. Login After receiving your username and password by mail, you can sign in to your account. Click on the Login-Button in the upper right corner Enter your username and password and click on Login Seite 4 von 21
5 After signing in for the first time, you have to choose a new password. Afterwards, you can see a timeline, where the deadlines of your assignments are shown. In the tab Courses you ll find your courses sorted by In progress (1), Future (2) and Past (3). Seite 5 von 21
6 3. How to set the language to English You can set the language to English by clicking on Deutsch (DE) and choosing English (en) in the drop down menu. Seite 6 von 21

12 5. Moodle Desktop Version: User interface and features 5.1. Dashboard Your dashboard is the cockpit that provides access to your courses and many additional features. Navigation menu The navigation menu (1) is located on the left side of the screen. You can display and hide it by clicking on the button contextual quick links. Profile In the course overview (6) you ll find your subscribed courses. Seite 12 von 21 (2). 13 My files You can use the platform as personal file storage (7). Via this link, you can manage your files Navigation menu By using the navigation menu, you can quickly access your courses, your files, your calendar and your dashboard. When you access a course, the navigation menu is expanded by additional links: there s a link to the list of participants in your course (students, teachers, BFI personnel) (1), a link to the available badges in your course (2) and a link to the grades you ve received in exercises (3). In addition, you can jump to different course sections (4). Seite 13 von 21
14 5.3. Profile By clicking on the cogwheel symbol (1) you can access a dropdown menu, where you can edit your profile (2). You can provide and edit personal information, add or change your profile picture and decide whether your address is visible to other students in the course. By default, your is only visible to the teachers and BFI personnel. You can also change your password (3) and set your preferences for messages and announcements (5). Seite 14 von 21
15 5.4. Private files Moodle provides a small cloud storage for your files that is also accessible by using the Moodle Mobile App. Your cloud includes 100 MB webspace you can use to store literature or working papers. You can add folders and files by clicking on the symbols and (1) or choose files via drag & drop (2). When adding files, a popup window opens where you can browse the files on your computer by clicking on Datei auswählen (3). After choosing a file, you can upload it (4). 16 6. Course features 6.1. Communication The main tools for communication on the platform are private messages, announcements and forums. In addition, a live chat can be set up by teachers. Messages You can send private messages to other students, teachers and BFI personnel that are forwarded to the address of the recipient. You can access the list of participants (students, teachers, BFI personnel) via the navigation menu (1) within a course. All BFI personnel have BFI Wien set as institution. Forums Forums and announcement sections are labelled with the symbol (2). Normally, every course has an announcements section. Only teachers and BFI personnel can post there: it is used for providing important information and announcements for course participants. These messages are displayed in the announcements section (3) at the right side of the screen within a course and are forwarded to the addresses of the recipients. Seite 16 von 21
17 In a forum, you can communicate with all other participants students, teachers and BFI personnel in the course simultaneously. You can start a thread by clicking on the button Add a new discussion topic. You have to enter a subject (1) and text (2). You can subscribe to the discussion (3) so every new post will be forwarded to your address. You can also attach files to your post (4). Start the topic by clicking on Post to forum (5). 18 6.2. Resources Resources can take various forms: normally, they consist of documents or multimedia content and are used for learning or course documentation. Interactive E-Learning content can additionally contain questions, tests or exercises. PDF documents Word documents Excel files Interactive E-Learningcontent Text pages Video files (example: quick time video) Audio files Links When you open resources in the browser (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Safari), additional software is usually not necessary when using the latest browser version. When you download resources to your computer or you access them via Moodle Mobile App, it is necessary to have the software required to display the content installed on the computer or smartphone (for instance a video player for videos, a pdf reader for pdf documents ). 19 6.3. Activities The most important activities on Moodle are assignments and tests. Assignments instruct you to solve given tasks and upload your work to the learning platform: the outcome could be documents, Excel files, pictures, video or audio files, etc. The task is explained in the assignment (1) and in most cases, there is a deadline for uploading (2). You can upload files by clicking on add submission (3). You can add folders and files by clicking on the symbols and (4) or add files via drag & drop (5). When you click on the add file symbol, a popup window opens where you can choose a file from your computer by clicking on the button Datei hochladen (6) and then Datei auswählen (7). 21 Tests are used to track your learning progress as well as conducting exams. There can be a time limit for finishing the exam or even answering a certain exam question. There are various question types: multiple choice questions (example: screenshot), calculations, essays, matching exercises or embedded answers. In this example, you can see the question (1), the possible answers (2) and additional information like assigned points and whether you have already answered this question (3). You can mark a question in order to get back to it later (You don t have to answer the questions in the provided order). When you mark a question, it will also be highlighted in the test navigation (4). Using the test navigation, you can quickly jump to different questions. Using the buttons at the bottom (5) you can navigate back and forth between the regular question order. Seite 21 von 21
