Heuristic Evaluation Introduction This document is a heuristic evaluation of part of the website. Due to the size of the website, this is a partial examination ed to showcase Al Strauss analytical capabilities. Heuristic Evaluation Criteria While this is the complete set of criteria used in the heuristic evaluation, only those criteria with findings will be listed for the associated pages. The criteria used in the heuristic evaluation are described in the table below. Definition The system should always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within Match between system and the real world User control and freedom Error Prevention Recognition rather than recall reasonable time. The system should speak the users' language, with words, phrases and concepts familiar to the user, rather than system-oriented terms. Follow real-world conventions, making information appear in a natural and logical order. Users often choose system functions by mistake and will need a clearly marked "emergency exit" to leave the unwanted state without having to go through an extended dialogue. Support undo and redo. Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. Follow platform conventions. Even better than good error messages is a careful which prevents a problem from occurring in the first place. Either eliminate error-prone conditions or check for them and present users with a confirmation option before they commit to the action. Minimize the user's memory load by making objects, actions, and options visible. The user should not have to remember information from one part of the dialogue to another. Instructions for use of the system should be visible or easily retrievable whenever appropriate. Table continued on next page 1
Heuristic Evaluation Criteria, continued The table below continues the descriptions of the criteria used for the heuristic evaluation. Flexibility and efficiency of use Help users recognize, diagnose and recover from errors Help and documentation Accelerators -- unseen by the novice user -- may often speed up the interaction for the expert user such that the system can cater to both inexperienced and experienced users. Allow users to tailor frequent actions. Dialogues should not contain information which is irrelevant or rarely needed. Every extra unit of information in a dialogue competes with the relevant units of information and diminishes their relative visibility. Error messages should be expressed in plain language (no codes), precisely indicate the problem, and constructively suggest a solution. Even though it is better if the system can be used without documentation, it may be necessary to provide help and documentation. Any such information should be easy to search, focused on the user's task, list concrete steps to be carried out, and not be too large. 2
Home Page The heuristic evaluation findings for the home page are as follows: Match between system and the real world is not about the system s performance but about usage and help capabilities. It should be re-named to About. post to classified should be re-titled Create a posting to provide clarity to the user about the purpose of the button. In the jobs category, ETC. should be changed to More jobs for user clarity and be right-justified. The gigs category should be changed to Contract Work for user clarity. The links should all be capitalized. The home page has too many links, making it hard for users to find the desired category. Adding images and colors will make the home page more aesthetically pleasing to the user. In the left navigation bar, there is an Events Calendar although it is not clear what events are listed. As a result, users will not make full use of the calendar. In the left navigation bar, the help faqs abuse legal button should be a) separated into individual buttons and b) moved to the bottom with the rest of what is currently the section. In the left navigation bar, there are buttons that should be re-ordered and categorized for the ease of the user. For example, the haiti earthquake relief and craigslist foundation buttons should be together under a Charities section. Category headings should be aligned either towards the top of the page or on the left side so users can more easily find what they are looking for and not interspersed throughout the home page. There are no links under the resumes category. All the pages for other parts of the world outside of the users local area takes up a significant amount of screen space but is rarely used once a location is selected. 3
Create Posting Page The heuristic evaluation findings for the create posting page are as follows: Error Prevention The page s title is in a small font and hard for the user to locate. The links should all be capitalized. The help link is down at the bottom of the page, making it hard for the user to find. It would be better off as a button, as it is on the home page. Categories are not defined so it can be unclear which is the best category for the user to select. For example, if the user is selling toddlers clothing, is baby and kid stuff or clothing and accessories the best category to select? The page s title should be changed to Select a Category for user clarity. The information warning users about scams, while valuable, does not belong on this page. The links can be re-organized to take advantage of all the white space on the right side of the screen. If the links are above the fold, it will be easier for the user to find. Choose a Location Page The heuristic evaluation findings for the Choose a Location page are as follows: Flexibility and efficiency of use The page s title is in a small font and hard for the user to locate. The page s title has not been updated. The sentences and links should all be capitalized. There is no help available on this page. For returning users, should remember which county was last selected and that county should become the users default county. The page s title should be changed to Choose a Location for user clarity. 4
Create a Posting Page The heuristic evaluation findings for the Create a Posting page are as follows: The page s title is in a small font and hard for the user to locate. The page s title has not been updated. The breadcrumbs, showing the paths the user has taken and is selecting for the posting, should be capitalized. The Posting Title heading should be in bold font, for consistency s sake. There is no help available on this page. The page s title should be changed to Create a Posting for user clarity. The Add Images capabilities should already be shown on this page instead of having the user click on a button. The Continue button can be located on the far right side and moved into the box for better visibility. 5
