Style Guide Welcome to our Team of Writers! Please use this style guide to help ensure that your article conforms to our desired on-page styles and look it s best ~ thanks! First a word about photos: In these visual example you ll notice we re using a single photo on most articles we will use several large photos throughout the article. We selected these single-photo examples to simplify this Style Guide. Second a word about Word: Please do NOT copy and paste already formatted text directly from Word into WordPress, this can result in a lot of hidden style code also being pasted in, which can break our carefully styled layout, yes even in the current version of WordPress which allegedly fixed that problem. If you re not comfortable writing directly in WordPress, a better option is to write using a plain-text editor (such as NotePad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac) then paste that into WP and style it using the Visual Editor buttons in accordance with this Style Guide. 1 st Paragraph (lede) should be a single sentence or no more than two very short sentences often this should be either a statement or a question that describes the topic. We keep it short because our default Style makes the font used in the first paragraph bolder and larger than subsequent paragraphs (you don t need to do this, it happens automatically) too many words and it looks overwhelming on the page. 2 nd through N th Paragraphs 3 to 4 sentences for each paragraph (fewer if you tend to write in long sentences), should result in a paragraph that is 5 to 7 lines long, which generally translates to roughly 75 to 100 words. The idea is to present your content in easily digestible chunks. Paragraph Headings (mandatory)- Please use short, descriptive paragraph headings in between each paragraph (for the skimmers!) and choose the H3 Tag for each heading. Sub-Headings (optional) - If you would like to use sub-headings (for example, at the top of bulleted lists), choose either an H4 or H5 Tag. Lists, Numbered and Bulleted Lists are a great way to add visual interest and skimmers love them they make articles easier to read. BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 1 of 9
o Numbered Lists (aka Ordered or <ol>) use these when the order or numbering is important, when the article title or paragraph header promises a number of something. o Bulleted Lists (aka Unordered or <ul>) use these when the order is NOT important or when offering a list of something that is not the main topic but is within the greater context of the article Tips, Block quotes, and Pull quotes (use as appropriate) we ve provided an example of each below and when to use them: o Tips use for short (1-3) list of tips where appropriate, in some cases where an article is ALL tips, this isn t necessary unless adding bonus tips. o Block quote use when you are quoting someone (remember the attribute!), or it can be used to make a very important point visually stand out. o Pull quote Used for a short sentence or phrase that in a quick glance offers a skimmer the most important point of the article. To create a pull quote apply the Style of pull-right to it from the Styles drop-down. PLEASE don t over-use these styles a couple of them (as appropriate) add visual appeal, too many in a short- to mid-length article just makes it looks cluttered. For example, if your article is all about tips and you re not visually isolating any using the tips style, consider adding a Pull Quote, or a Block Quote (if you re quoting someone) or add a pull quote near the top and an additional (or bonus) tips section near the bottom. Please don t use any other styles without consulting with an Editor ~ thanks! Internal Linking Ideally, every article published at BAI should link to 1 to 3 other [related] articles also found on BAI. We realize that this may be difficult if not impossible, and we plan to go back to older articles and add these links as we accumulate more content. HOWEVER, if you can find relevant content that is already published at BAI, please link to it this should get easier as we grow. External Linking when linking to off-site content, please be sure to choose a new window as the target otherwise site visitors might accidentally close that window before returning to our site..thanks! Ending your article Every article should end with a question designed to stimulate comments. Please bold this question so that readers don t miss it. External Resources (optional) this is simply a section to relist or roundup any external links used in your article or references/credits/attributes. These links will BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 2 of 9
appear at the end of your content. If you re not linking to any external site, you can skip this section, and it isn t necessary to add for every external link, just the important ones. Using the Style Buttons Visual Editor Using these diagrams of the Visual Editor Style tools and the following examples, you should be able to style your articles in the format we use have questions? Please ask! BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 3 of 9
EXAMPLES Please review the screenshots on these pages to see highlighted examples of each item in this Style Guide. Example Illustration 1: Lede, Paragraph Headers, Tips style applied to paragraph BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 4 of 9
Example Illustration 2: Ordered list, Block Quote styled pull-right, Paragraph Subheader, un-ordered list BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 5 of 9
Example Illustration 3: Internal link, Block quote used to quote someone with attribution, ending with a question BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 6 of 9
Example Illustration 4: Using the block quote alternatively, External Resources In this example, we deliberately used the URL in both boxes in the section labeled Additional External Resources because we wanted the URL itself to be displayed and not anchor text. In most cases, having anchor text is desirable because it allows us to use specific keywords as well as make the link more appealing to the reader. 8 Photos Each article should contain a Featured Image that expresses visually the topic of the article, plus other images to accompany each sub-heading in the article. Please be sure that each photo conforms to the following policies: 1. All images must be non-copyrighted or carry a creative commons license, there are a number of resources for free non-copyrighted/ccl images, links can be found at the end of this section. 2. In accordance with our Author s Agreement and Article Guidelines, if YOU have taken a photo that is appropriate, we will review and (potentially) purchase the photo from you on a non-exclusive basis, please communicate this with us. 3. ALL images must be precisely 875 pixels wide. Images that are wider should be cropped or reduced, images that are slightly (but not significantly) smaller may be increased in size provided they don t become blurry. There are a number of free tools for both resizing and optimizing images, IrFanView is one for Windows, GIMP is a Mac product, both are free. 4. The Featured Image must be precisely 470 pixels tall, other images may be taller, but please avoid/resize/crop those taller than 600 pixels, it causes too much scrolling and doesn t resize well for mobile phones. 5. All images must be properly attributed in the CAPTION field, please put the name of the website only (the website name is preferable, but a URL is acceptable, please don t use the part as that creates a link). It is no longer necessary to include Image source as that is now added by the template we use to display images. 6. PLEASE give a descriptive NAME to the photo BEFORE uploading it on occasion we have to search our media library, and image names such as img w.jpg make it difficult to find what we re seeking. 7. Please add a description of the photo in the ALT field if you can work in a keyword/phrase that s great, if it isn t possible at least a description of the photo will suffice..otherwise WordPress automatically uses the Caption (image source) as the Alt Text attribute for the photo. 8. When inserting into your article, please place the photo directly below the subheading and above the text for that section. THANKS for your help with getting the photos added correctly we appreciate it! BestAllInclusive.com Style Guide 10/24/2016 Page 8 of 9
Photo Resources: This article is a great primer on understanding copyrighted images, please read it if you re not already familiar with how images can be used online: This article covers how to incorporate SEO when adding images to articles: The websites below (courtesy of blog.hootsuite.com) are great resources for stock images that are non-copyrighted or that carry a Creative Commons License: Questions? Please don t hesitate to ask us if you have any questions using this Style Guide we re here to ensure that your article shines and performs well for you!
