5 1. Introduction This document provides a short overview over the implementation, testing and quality assurance activities conducted in the first year of the AppHub project. To recall: The AppHub platform provides three integrated sub-services, namely: The Directory is based on results from the OCEAN project. 1 It comprises a classification of open source assets (taxonomy) that maps functions, supported activities, standards and related technologies, and cross issues into an enterprise computing reference architecture. The Factory provides functions to construct a template for the deployment of an open source asset. A template is basically a description of an execution environment for an asset. It can be used to generate a virtual machine that can be deployed in a cloud infrastructure (or downloaded for local execution). The Store provides functions to provide market information for assets, and to purchase them (of course, within the AppHub project, every asset is free). 2. Activity Summary The following table updates the planning of the AppHub platform development activities as provided in [D2.1]. Release Description Date Development phase 0 (I) Milestone: Development versions of the AppHub Directory, AppHub Factory, and AppHub Marketplace available 1 (I) 1 st AppHub developer workshop: Architecture 2 nd AppHub developer workshop: Interfaces Milestone: Synchronization support between AppHub Directory and AppHub Factory/Marketplace available Status End March Preparation Complete February April End June 2 (I) AppHub taxonomy workshop June 9 Data Integration testing (ongoing, remote) July November Milestone: AppHub Directory content extension (taxonomy, data sets) functional, system integration completed and tested 3 (E) Milestone: AppHub beta roll-out complete 4 (E) Quality assessment (ongoing remote) End August Concept mapping and functional extension extension, testing and quality assurance Complete Complete End September Beta roll-out Complete November December Beta test period Complete 5 (E) Milestone: AppHub Final December Complete Changes (underlined blue) with regard to [D2.1] are the following: The 3 rd and 4 th AppHub Developer workshops have been cancelled because the interaction and coordination between Fraunhofer and 1 AppHub 1 Grant agreement no:
6 UShareSoft run smoothly using remote communication mechanisms ( , skype), hence, physical meetings turned out to be unnecessary. 3. AppHub Core Development 3.1. Status The development works for the AppHub platform have been concluded successfully. Maintenance work will be continued within the operational phase (January December 2016), but functional extensions are not planned. Two releases of the AppHub platform have been rolled-out so far, namely a functional complete BETA version in October 2015 and the FINAL version in December For these releases, the implementation activities comprise the following (release indicated in parentheses): Workflows for the producer (i.e., projects that provide open source assets) and the consumer (users who employ the AppHub platform to select and deploy an asset for evaluation or production purposes) have been defined and implemented (BETA, updated for FINAL). Synchronisation mechanisms for a minimal set of project and asset data between Directory, Factory, and Store have been implemented. All three sub-systems maintain their own databases, hence, overlaps must be minimized to maintain data consistency (BETA). Single sign-on functionality for all three sub-systems (BETA, updated for FINAL). The Directory has been modified as follows: Taxonomy generalisation to capture a large number of open source assets. The original OCEAN Open Cloud Interoperability Framework has provided a taxonomy based on a cloud computing reference architecture. For the AppHub project, this taxonomy has been generalized to generic enterprise computing. For details see [Deu15] (FINAL). Introduction of a deployable asset type for those assets that can have a template in the Store/Factory, i.e., software assets of projects that have the Open Source Charter accepted (BETA, updated in FINAL). Open Source Charter text appears now in the project description dialogue and must be accepted (check box ticked) to proceed deployable assets from the Directory to the Store/Factory (BETA). Several minor improvements regarding the usability of the platform have been implemented (search restriction to deployable assets, cleaning of terminology used in the user interface) (BETA, FINAL). For the migration of templates between Store and Factory the HAMMR 2 tool has been integrated. Previously, a command-line version of HAMMR had to be invoked on client side (i.e., by the producer or consumer) to perform this integration. Now, this mechanism is automated and executed transparent to the user within the platform (FINAL) Issues No major issues have been encountered that could have an impact to the overall project progress. Some minor issues had been: Since Directory, Store, and Factory are implemented as separate sub-systems that have their own history from previous projects, their look and feel (layout, colour scheme, etc.) differ slightly. This issue has obviously no functional implications. An improvement of the look and feel will be done as part of the maintenance activities for the platform. Due to a technical complicity, the integration of the HAMMR tool was not available for the BETA release as originally planned, resulting in a disruption of the producer/consumer workflow in the BETA release. This issue has been resolved for the FINAL release. 2 AppHub 2 Grant agreement no:
7 4. Documentation and User Support 4.1. Status Extensive documentation material has been produced (c.f. Section 6) For user support, the following tools have been deployed: Contact list: An issue tracker, using the OW2 Jira infrastructure: Issues None 5. Quality Assurance 5.1. Status The test cases provided in [D2.2] have been executed successfully. A number of issues have been identified and resolved. Test activities have been performed in various remote sessions of the developer teams at Fraunhofer and UShareSoft. This agile method has the advantage that bugs and issues are identified in close interaction between the teams. The AppHub platform has been assessed as of production level quality Issues None 6. Usability 6.1. Status The evaluation of usability of the platform has been done in two steps: 1. In project internal sessions with non-technical members of the project consortium. 2. Feedback from the projects that have been invited to evaluate the platform as beta testers Issues The following issues have been encountered: Issue Measure to resolve Directory, Store and Factory use different terminology to refer to open source assets and templates. The workflows for producers and consumers are difficult to comprehend. The enterprise computing reference architecture used in the Directory components is complex. The template mechanism features socalled boot scripts, i.e., installation scripts The terminology has been unified and consistently used. To resolve this issue, extensive documentation material has been provided. AppHub Producer and Consumer Guide [Lef15a, b]. Workflow summaries for producer and consumer. Screencasts explaining the workflow. An AppHub Taxonomy Guide has been provided [Deu15] This issue is strictly not in the scope of the AppHub project. However, bilateral help ( , remote AppHub 3 Grant agreement no:
8 for the software assets including additional libraries and software components. The development of automatic installation scripts is a non-trivial task. sessions) has been provided to help projects understand and to apply the boot script mechanism. 7. Next Steps Maintenance of the AppHub platform will be continued in WP3, including customizations (e.g. cloud providers supported), platform maintenance (upgrades, new features provided) support operations performed.
