derive Low-fi prototype & Pilot testing Johny C, Jolena M, Sam G, Daniel K. Mission Statement Enable travelers to plan their trips based on experiences of others Problem/Solution overview Travel revolves around discovering a destination, making arrangements to get there, and recording the experience for personal or shared use. In the current travel ecosystem there are three prevailing travel paradigms: 1. Visual Story Popularized by Instagram and Facebook, a visual story consists of disconnected images with descriptions. Pros: personal, visually attractive, easy to make and appropriate. Cons: not repeatable/actionable 2. List of attractions Offered by TripAdvisor and Yelp, this paradigm focuses on attractions that often coincide with businesses. Pros: High scale Cons: impersonal, not easy to appropriate, not very visual 3. Booking interface Primarily pushed by intermediaries like AirBnb, Kayak etc, this representation cajoles the user into considering commercial travel offerings. Pros: High scale, actionable. Cons: impersonal, not visual A viable trip lifecycle must include some elements of all three, yet no single resource offers this experience. In our needfinding tests we have confirmed that people cycle through the above modalities when planning trips, which is not efficient. There are some projects out there made to address this problem. Most notably, specialized travel forums support the notion of trip reports where the interested parties (influencers) post their trip progress, photos and findings. These reports are usually comprehensive but are hard to create and are not actionable. In addition, commercial companies like TripAdvisor are planning to add the elements of social networking to introduce the notion of shareable trips, but it is unclear how well they will execute. Our solution intends to simplify a generation, sharing and appropriation of trip reports.

Solution top-level architecture. Our solution has three distinct tasks: (1) Generate a trip report from past travels, (2) Browse trip reports of others, and (3) Save elements of reports to derive a custom trip. We consider the smallest building block of the trip to be a point of interest (POI). A POI is represented by a card with elements: picture, location, text. Therefore, the three tasks above can be reduced to generating, browsing, selecting and linking POIs. Concept Sketches Task sequence: (1) Generate report, ( 2) Browse (3) Appropriate (a) Browser plugin. Unique value: ability to access location history (b) Web site. Unique value: ease of producing text on the desktop

(c) Wearable: Unique values: sensor-based interface (d) Mobile app (phone). Unique value: most accessible (e) Mobile app (tablet). Unique value: most visual

Top 2 designs storyboarded In choosing the designs, we considered the availability of data, ease of processing and appropriation. Based on these criteria and upon consulting with Prof. Landay, we dropped the wearable interface for its limited user density, discarded plugin design for being too vendor-specific, and killed web design for having too many steps to access data like photos that live on mobile. This left phone and tablet modalities, for which we did storyboarding for tasks of trip browsing and report generation: (a) Trip Browsing (phone) (b) Trip browsing (tablet) (a) Trip Generation (phone) (b) Trip Generation (tablet)

Both shortlisted designs perused the repeating schemes: POI cards, list representations and map representations. The mobile version focuses on helping user organize their searched matches, past and planned travels in the list format. Map representation is a secondary modality for the phone. Due to the larger real estate, the tablet version of our application prioritizes large images and map views. Because users may not have trip photos easily accessible on their tablets, it focuses less on content creation and more on helping users browse inspiring trip stories. Selected Interface Design Upon some discussion we decided it was possible to combine the best features of mobile and tablet designs into one format built around three main activity tabs that correspond to three different tasks (browse, generate, plan). The interaction map on the left shows the relation between them and progression of screens.

Task Application logic and Interface Elements By default, the user starts in the Browse mode. By entering a location or enabling the GPS, the user ends in the trips screen where POIs generated by other travelers are shown. Representation can be map or list. Clicking on POI bring the user into POI zoom-in screen. Zoom screen allows POI to be examined and added to user wishlist. Interface elements: Filter buttons, Google map, Pinch to zoom, Slide to scroll, Add button A second screen is accessible anytime the user enters Generate Mode. This screen is predicated on entering dates for travel, and bring the user into a list of photos that match the dates selected. Choosing a photo populates a POI card that can be enhanced with text. Trip can be shown from this screen in map overlay or the list form, where the full trip can be saved/shared. Clicking on POI allows editing or deletion. Interface elements: Calendar entry, Google map, Save button, Category button, Delete button Finally, a 3rd screen builds map/list representation based on saved POIs in the Plan Mode. This completes the user interaction cycle because booking functionality is currently deferred. Interface elements: Filter button, Google map, Delete button Prototype To model interactions with our prototype, we created a phone frame that we moved around to represent what was currently showing on the screen. Our paper prototype was preloaded with existing trips to San Francisco. We did not implement all the selected design layout elements in paper to reduce the visual clutter (most notably, the ability to edit generated trips and saved trips).

Task Flow for Finding a Trip: Home Screen Search for Stories in Desired Location Search Results Screen - Browse trip stories from different people - Preview story images by swiping horizontally - Click on the card to view actual story

Task Flow for Viewing a Trip and Filtering by Category: Once user clicks on search result, view the full story: Filter the trip story by things to do : Click on the Things to Do tag to only view POIs of that type in the story

Filter the trip story by food: Click on the Food tag to only view food-related POIs in the story Filter the trip story by hotels: Click on the Hotels tag to only view accommodation-related POIs View the trip story on a map :

When click on a POI on the map, automatically scroll bottom window to that POI s card. When click on card, automatically zoom map in on that POI on the map. Add POIs to wishlist: Click on add button next to specific POI Task Flow for Generating a Trip Story:

Method Participants Given that our application is geared towards people who are already using digital travel tools, we recruited one middle-aged woman who travels frequently and two college students. We compensated them by offering to purchase a food or drink item. We conducted one session at a coffee shop and the other two at the Stanford bookstore. Tasks In order to test the three tasks mentioned above, we added more detail and anchored them to a tangible situation. During each session, we asked participants to imagine they were looking to go on a trip to San Francisco in the near future. We then asked them to accomplish 3 specific tasks: 1. Find and view someone else s San Francisco trip story. 2. Find a breakfast spot in SF and save it to your wishlist. 3. Generate your own trip story. Procedure We began each session by thanking participants for their time and assuring them that they could be completely honest. In particular, we emphasized the fact that we were there to test the application design, not them, in order to get genuine feedback. After requesting that they think aloud while walking through the demo and giving them a brief example of this technique, we explained a few key elements of our app, such as the concept of a trip story. Once we set the scene, we asked them to accomplish the three tasks delineated above (full protocol is listed in Appendix). For each task, we: read the task aloud and asked them to complete it using the paper prototype if they completed it in an unexpected way, asked them follow-up questions about why they took the actions they did. Asked them how they found the experience and what changes or improvements they would like to see made. Test Measures To measure our results, we looked at the following: Whether a participant completed a task in the expected manner (considered a success ) The time a participant spent completing a task Whether a participant tried to interact with a UI element that was not interactive in our current design The types and the number of errors made during each task We paid particularly close attention to: Whether a participant used the map or list view to view search results Whether a participant used the category filters while viewing an individual trip story

Whether a participant was able to navigate easily between different tasks Team Member Roles In order to give each team member equal opportunity, we rotated roles for each of the three testing sessions. We always assigned the same 4 roles: 1 greeter and facilitator 1 computer 1 dedicated observer 1 recorder (we didn t want note-taking to distract participants) Results Two out of the three participants completed the first task. Because of the horizontally-scrolling image gallery preview under each search result, one participant thought the search results were the stories themselves and therefore did not click in further. The second task was completed successfully and straightforwardly by all three participants. Because the trip story we made contained two breakfast spots, we saw that, in order to decide which breakfast place to add, participants clicked on specific restaurants to get more information. All three participants successfully completed the third task. However, some participants expressed privacy concerns about how the app was accessing their photos and what they were doing with them. In general, participants also expressed their preference for the list view of search results over the map view and gave positive feedback about the ability to get more information on each POI. We will implement some changes to address their concerns.

Appendix Detailed discussion Through user testing, we learned that our app needs both smaller UI changes and larger functionality changes. While the goal of the usability tests was to get feedback on the intuitiveness of our app s UI, we found that users challenges with the UI were often symptomatic of larger conceptual misunderstandings. For one, users didn t seem to understand the value in trip stories over itineraries -- we will need to better define this. For another, we need to think about how to better incentivize travelers to publish their trip stories by offering social capital points. Last but not least, we may need to address privacy concerns with regards to accessing users photos. The largest area for improvement is in the way users browse and find trip stories to view. We saw during sessions that users had different expectations of what San Francisco meant, and therefore did not feel like they had the ability to see stories they truly wanted to see. Moving forward, we will default the display of the search results to a map view. Other changes that we will implement immediately are: Reducing the number of screens and interactive elements -- during sessions, participants repeatedly asked for a more streamlined interface. Changing category icons (ie. food, things to do, hotels) to be more visually informative Adding back buttons more intentionally and thoughtfully to connect screens. Something we were unable to test is the stickiness of our app. Because our app depends on an ecosystem of creators and consumers to thrive but is targeted to a user group that may travel infrequently, we need to ensure that people feel incentivized to come back to the app to post their trip stories after the fact. Hopefully, by making the changes we ve described above, we re able to motivate users to do so by making the app more engaging and intuitive to use. Incident Severity Ratings (1- highest, 5-lowest) Red text denotes errors/misses, green text denotes successes/easy additions Participant # 1 Incident Severity Too many screens wants fewer 2 Wants to compare against demographics 3 She wants more info on each of the places 2

Map view was interesting 3 Wanted arrows to link a trip 2 Wants to alter existing trips 2 Participant # 2 Incident Severity Assumes POIs are from his friends 5 Dislikes button design 5 Does not care about other peoples pics 5 Wants to travel pretending he does not plan 2 Wanted improved filtering categories 3 Participant # 3 Incident Severity Confuses trip stories and itineraries 2 Concerned with privacy 4 Wants content from his friends, not strangers. 5 Wanted improved filtering categories 3 Final Design Description The app is built around three modes of operation. By default, the user starts in the Browse mode. By entering a location or enabling the GPS, the user ends in the trips screen where POIs generated by other travelers are shown. Representation can be map or list. Clicking on POI bring the user into POI zoom-in screen. Zoom screen allows POI to be added to user wishlist.

A second screen is accessible anytime the user enters Generate Mode. Finally, a 3rd screen builds map/list representation based on saved POIs in the Plan Mode. This completes the user interaction cycle because booking functionality is currently deferred. Features dropped after paper testing Changes and drops (appear in paper prototype but not planned for hi-fi) 1. Multiple past trips and trip history (only one trip will be generated) 2. Multiple planned trips (only one trip will be planned) 3. Bookmarks (trip being planned and bookmark is the same screen) 4. Day and the time of the day for planned POIs 5. Ability to see map view based on location search (list view only) 6. Multiple images saved per POI Usability Testing Script The following script is adapted from Krug, Steve. (2010). Rocket Surgery Made Easy: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Finding and Fixing Usability Problems. Berkeley, CA: New Riders. Hi, thank you again for taking the time to test out the demo of our mobile application. My name is, and today I ll be asking you to use our app to accomplish three tasks. It s really important to know that we are only testing the app, not you. You can t do or say anything wrong here. Please feel free to let me know at any time if there s something you like, dislike, if you re confused, etc. I promise you won t hurt my feelings. Also, I d like you to think aloud as much as possible. By that, I mean that I d like you to speak your thoughts as often as you can. For example, you may be looking at a page, suddenly see something you didn t see before and want to click on it. In that case, saying something like this caught my eye so I m going to see what it is would be very useful. If at any point you have questions, please don t hesitate to ask. Do you have any questions so far? Before we get started, please sign this consent form. Ok, Let s get started. To give some background, we re building an app that does two things: 1) allows users to

upload photos and then automatically generates a cohesive trip story from those and 2) lets people planning trips browse other stories and save things they like to a list. Our paper prototype is a very early draft of what our mobile application will potentially look like. Please interact with our paper prototype as if you were interacting with an actual application. We would like you to imagine that you re thinking about going on a trip to San Francisco soon and want to get some inspiration about what you can do there. [show home page with empty search box] First, I m going to ask you to look at this page and tell me what you make of it: what strikes you about it, what you can do here, and what it s for. Just look around and do a little narrative. No need to do anything yet. Thanks. Now I m going to ask you to try doing some specific tasks. And again, as much as possible, it will help us if you can try to think out loud as you go along; there are no right answers! The first task is : navigate to a San Francisco trip story. [don t change page/screen] The next task is : find a breakfast spot in SF and save it to your wishlist. [show home page again] The last task is : Generate a trip story. Now, I would like to ask you some follow up questions: First, we would like to know a little bit more about you. How frequently do you travel? [show search page with San Francisco in box] What types of trip stories would be most appealing to you to see first? If you could filter further, how would you want to do that? [continue showing search page with San Francisco in box] Does the map view or the list view seem more useful to you? Why?

Pros and Cons for Selected Design Mobile Design Pros Significantly larger potential user base -- more likely for app to become social More active and engaging interface -- focused on giving users opportunity to share own trip stories Cons Harder to view trip on a smaller device without a lot of scrolling Potentially more cluttered design in general because trying to fit multiple functions onto small screen Tablet Design Pros Larger screen real estate -- more room for high-quality photos Easier display of things requiring large photos, such as an interactive map Easier to multitask other travel apps at the same time with larger screen Cons More complex interface with many moving parts on even just one screen Smaller user base Users may not store trip memories (ie. photos) on tablet More passive action -- focused on browsing as opposed to creating Consent Forms
