D7.1 Website 7 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This document describes the web site of the project. The document is organized in two main parts: The first part is dedicated to an Introduction that describes the abstract of the project (first of all because this deliverable is public, but also because it helps to understand the main contents that must be communicated through the website) and the website as a whole (methodology, requirements, site map and technical details); The second part is dedicated to the Description of the website starting from the public and the restricted areas and concluding with its updates. The public area consists of: the home page, project overview, public documents, news, consortium, contacts and link with other projects. Each page is briefly described and introduced. In the restricted area, dedicated to the consortium and the EC representatives the attention is focused on the Wikii and the BSCW systems used to optimize informationn exchange in the consortium and contain useful project documents (deliverables, CA, GA, etc.).
D7.1 Website 8 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. abstract ICT is recognized as being a key player against climate change: pervasive sensors and actuators can efficiently control the whole energy chain (Smart Thermal/Electricity Grid). On the other side, advances on 3D modeling, visualization and interaction technologies enable user profiling and real time feedback to promote energy efficient behaviors. To unlock the potential of these technologies, the project focuses on: Interoperability of district energy production/consumption, environmental conditions and user feedback data; Exploitation of effective visual and web based interfaces to provide pervasive and real time feedback about energy impact of user behaviors; Integration of Building Information Models (BIM) with real time dataa and their extension at the district level (DIM); New business models for energy traders and prosumers (producer/consumer) exploiting user energy profiling. The system will integrate BIM and district level 3D models with real time data from sensors and user feedback to analyze and correlate buildings utilization and provide real time feedback about energy related behaviors. It will allow open access with personal devices and Augmented Reality (AR) visualization of energy related information to client applications for energy and cost analysis, tariff planning and evaluation, failure identification and maintenance, and energy information sharing. All the following technologies are included: i) real time data collection; ii) advanced middleware technology for data integration; iii) simulation and virtual visualization; iv) user/ /social profiling, visualization and feedback; v) energy efficiency and cost analysis engine; vi) web interface and interaction. In order to validate the innovative system, both public (university campuses, schools) and private buildings included in mixed up (mixité) urban districts are considered in two different cities, in South and North Europe; Turin (IT) and Manchester (UK). As most energy usage of buildings throughout their life cycle is during the operational stage (~80%), the project gives special attention to existing and historical buildings. In conclusion, the expected results are a consistent reduction in both energy consumption and CO 2 emissions by enabling more efficient energy distribution policies according to the real characteristics of district buildings and inhabitants as well as more efficient utilization and maintenance of the energy distribution network, based on social behavior and user attitudes and demand. Figure 1.1 The concept of the project
D7.1 Website website The purpose of the website is considered to be more than just an on line brochure of the project; easy access to the contents will be the most importantt aspect of its success. In order to support the contents summarized in the last section, a good balance of technology and graphics is considered essential. In this regard, the websitee is intended to be functional and to work correctly, but at the same time be appealing to the eye Methodology The website has been designed since the beginning of the project using the iterative development process shown in figure below and it will be improved during the lifecycle of the project using the same process. Figure 1.2 Iterative development process used Requirements Four different types of requirements documentation have been considered to correctly set the website: Business requirements. In this section the following have been analyzed: what is required from the audiences, what the site sayss about the project and most importantly, how the site willl achieve its goals. Functional requirements. In this section the technical wants and needs of the website have been defined, considering: user editing if necessary, specific files neededd to be downloaded (deliverable, papers, etc.), if videos or/and audio files are needed, security features, login feature, and online activities (like the restricted wiki area and the BSCW repository). User interface requirements. This section describes how a user interacts with the website. It started with an intended site map for the project as shown in the paragraph below. Here we have explored how many pages are needed to be created in order to achieve the goals in the business section. Although this may change as the project progresses into the content management phase, it was essential to start by declaring what sections are needed, what the navigation may look like, and an idea of how deep it might go. Usability requirements. In this section we have consideredd how the site needs to work, in what platforms it needs to be used under, who will be reading the site, how they will be accessing it. This has been broken down by users expectations of how easy the site needs to be to understand and how easy it is to obtain the information required.
10 D7.1 Website Site map As shown in the figure below, the website was created to enable users to get the information required in a minimum number of steps. From the home page (LEVEL 1) it is possible to go directly to all the main data of the project (abstract, technologies, public documents, news, etc.) in LEVELL 2. Furthermore, from the home page, using a login that ensures the security of the data it is possible for partners, project officer and reviewers (EC area) to access the restricted areas thatt is the repository for the documents of the project (DoW, CA, GA, etc.), for all deliverables and for the mailing list for each WP (LEVEL 3) ). Finally, from the Internal area partners will be able to share information and documents on a Wiki and a BSCW document management system administered by Fraunhofer (LEVEL 4). Figure 1.3 Site map with the levels of the data Technical details The website is hosted by Politecnico di Torino and the domain name dimmer.polito.it is registered on the DNS of Politecnico di Torino for 5 years. The website was designed starting from a ZixCMS 5 template and it is composed of static and dynamic web pages. Every web page can be created and modified by the ZixCMS application. 5 ZixCMS is an online content management system used at Politecnico di Torino.
11 D7.1 Website 1 2. Description of the website The website ( has several public sections aimed to present the project to the external visitors and a restricted section dedicated to the partners of the consortium and to the EC. In this sense, the website has been structured in two different parts, with different content each: Public area. The public area is intended to provide a vision of the project to the general public. It contains information about the project, including the project s objectives and technologies, partner description, project progress, project news, related links etc. It also gives access to the public deliverables generated within the project. It is a part of the WP7 work package scope on project dissemination and it will be one of the main media for the dissemination of the public results. Restricted area. The scope of the restricted area is to provide a private place to share documents among the partners and to manage the consortium internal communication process. This area is private and a password is mandatory to have access to it. It is organized in two parts: The first one (internal area) contains information related to the project management, as well as the link to the working area for the project members (Wiki and BSCW); The second one contains information related to the project management and all the deliverable submitted, and it is devoted to the Project Officer and the EC Reviewers. 2.1.Public area Home page A minimal design in gray scale characterizes the website as a whole, starting from the home page. In the home page, several boxes (that the number could be implemented in the future if necessary) represent the main topics, and from each of them visitors can directly access the information in the next level. Figure 2.1 Home page
12 D7.1 Website Project overview This page provides a summary of the project as a whole as shown in the figure below, containing description of the project, of the Technologies and of each Work Package. the link to the Figure 2.2 Project overview Public documents This page allows the download of the public documents (deliverables, presentations, papers, video, etc.) of the project. This part will be updated continuously based on the results and the activities of the project News This page presents the history of the project news including links to key documents such as multi be language press releases. Moreover, in this page the Next Events (such as internal meetings, participation to conferences, etc.) will listed and described if necessary.
13 D7.1 Website Consortium This page provides a short description of the various consortium partners including: company logos, links to the corporative websites and short partner profiles Contacts This page contains the contact data of the Project Coordinator (Enrico Macii) and the person responsible for project disseminationn and public activities as well as for the web content (Anna Osello). The contact will be available through the dimmer@polito.it Link with FP7/Horizon 2020 and other projects These pages contain the link with the website of FP7/Horizon and other projects useful for the project like Ready4SmartCity, SEEMPubS, VoCamp, etc. This section will be updated regularly as new projects will be available based on new contacts. It represents a good opportunity to share the information and to reinforce the network of national and international projects. 2.2.Restricted area The restricted area is used to store all the project documents on a secure server for the partners of the consortium and for the PO and EC reviewers. Access to the restricted area for the persons involved in the project as shown in figure 2.3 is gained through individual login names and passwords, which are issued by the secure server administrator at Politecnico di Torino. The restricted area consists of: Shared libraries with documents and templates; Secure libraries with documents (public and private); The project calendar; Announcements; A set of mailing lists for each WP and if necessary for each Deliverable; Other standard functions Wiki The project has established an internal wiki to facilitate electronic collaboration between the project partners. In order to edit, it will be necessary to login (username and password are the same of the main website).
14 D7.1 Website 1 Figure 2.3 Wiki BSCW The Basic Support for Cooperative Work (BSCW) system 6 used in the project is based on the notation of a shared workspace, a joint storage facility that may contain various kinds of objects such as documents, tables, graphics, spreadsheetss or links to other Web pages. A workspace can be set up and objects stored, managed, edited or downloaded with any Web browser. The BSCW system will keep the members of the group informed about each others' relevant activities in a shared workspace as shown in figure below. Figure 2.4 The BSCW system 6 Developed by Fraunhoferr Institute for Applied Information Technology.
15 D7.1 Website Updates Both the public and the restricted web pages will be maintained regularly with updates at least once per month as the project produces results, as papers are published, deliverables released or whenever there are items of news to report. Furthermore, the public website will be maintained two years after the end of the project.
16 D7.1 Website 1 3. CONCLUSIONS The public and restricted areas of the website were set up as the main sections. As mentioned above the public website represents the main dissemination mean for the project (WP7) while the restricted area acts as repository of definitive and ongoing versions of documents, providing a way to share private informationn among the partners of the project. Structure and content of the website are subject to changes and improvements during the project activity, in order to better satisfy possible new dissemination requirements emerging during the project evolution and disseminate new results obtained. The website maintenance is therefore an ongoing activity that will go along with the project development.
