Introduction to Multimedia MMP100 Spring 2016 thiserichagan.com/mmp100
Troubleshooting Check your tags! Do you have a start AND end tags? Does everything match? Check your syntax! Any mistakes? Check your file names! Any spelling errors, spaces, or weird characters? Check your file paths and extensions! Are your files there? Are they the right type? Did you save the most recent changes?
Question Time? Any and all questions including: How the internet works HTML CSS Where to find x We will have a short in class Quiz next class (10 question multiple choice)
File structure and extensions THESE MATTER! Just like if we move our directories around (folders) or save it in a different place, we can break stuff! Consistency will help! RESTful architecture (fancy way of saying organized structures) for our files and multiple websites will make it easier, I will demonstrate
Review: Inline vs Block Block elements: p, div, li Inline elements: strong, img, a
CSS explained Control elements of the boxes Width and Height Borders (color, width, style) Background color and images Positions in browser window Text Typeface Size Color Italics, bold, uppercase, lowercase, small-caps
CSS CSS works by associating rules with HTML elements Two parts to a CSS rule: a selector a declaration Example: p { font-family: Arial;}
CSS declaration Sit inside { curly brackets } Two parts property value Example h1, h2, h3 { font-family: Arial; color: red;}
Selector Options Universal Selector * { } Targets all elements on the page Type Selector Matching element names h1, h2, h3 { } id Selector Matches id attribute #introduction { }
Selector Options continued Class Selector class html attribute makes elements part of a type.note { } = all elements with a class attribute of note Example:.note { } All elements with a class of note Also specify html element + class Example: p.note { } Only paragraph elements with a class attribute of.note
Selector Options Continued Child Selector Continued Matches element that is a direct child Example: li>a { } (links that are in list elements) Descendant Selector Matches element that are any descendent (not just immediate) Example: p a { } (links inside any paragraph element)
Continued Continued Continued Continued etc Adjacent Sibling Selector Matches an element that is the next sibling of another Example: h1 + p { } (heading one followed by a paragraph, only the first paragraph is targeted) General Sibling Selector Matches an element that is a sibling of another (doesn t have to be immediate next) Example: h1~p{ } (would apply to all paragraphs after a <h1> header)
Inheritance font-family / color properties can be inherited (passed onto child elements) This saves from having to include fontfamily in every declaration background-color and border properties are NOT INHERITED (would be very messy) Can force properties to be inherited by using inherit as the value of the property
Selector Options Important to note: You can be as specific or vague as you want, get used to thinking about your elements as occupying places on the page TEST YOUR STYLE PAGES, look at your pages.
No, Seriously, Look At Your Pages! The only way to know if things look the way you want, make it easier to read and understand the information is if you LOOK AT THE PAGES YOU HAVE CREATED!!!!!! Really, look at them (yes, I can tell)
Text Properties Two Groups: Directly affect the font and its appearance Typeface, format, size of text Same effect on the text no matter what Color, spacing between words and letters
Typeface Serif Fonts Examples: Georgia, Times New Roman Sans Serif Examples: Arial, Lucinda Grande, Verdana Monospace Examples: Courier New, Lucinda Console
Font Properties Weight Light, Medium, Bold, Black Style Normal, Italic, Oblique Stretch Condensed, Regular, Extended
Serif vs Sans-serif Serif small line attached to the end of the letters Example: Times New Roman Sans-serif without the small lines Example: Helvetica
Monospace All characters have the same spacing between them Example: Monaco
Cursive Joining strokes or other cursive characteristics Example: Monotype Corsiva
Fantasy Decorative fonts, not for large bodies of text, but better for titles Example: Impact
Weight Light Medium Bold Black
Style Normal Italic cursive aspect to the letters Oblique regular font but slanted
Stretch Condensed thin and closer Regular Extended thicker and further apart
How to choose your font? Browser needs the font on the computer in order to display it! Crazy exciting fonts you find on the internet probably won t be available to everyone You have things to say, and you want people to be able to read them We will address this more as we get into color as well This means no ironic Comic Sans Usage
Adjusting fonts font-family Example:font-family: Georgia, Times, serif font-size pixels (12 px), percent (%) or em font-weight, font-style font-weight:normal, bold font style: normal, italic, oblique
Some words on measurements Default browser text is: 16 pixels Pixels Specify exactly what size you want Relative to screen resolution Percentages Based off default text size (can be changed by the user) Em-the width of one letter m Change text with a relative size
Standard Scale 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 18, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 Calculate percentages based off 16 pixels (as the standard) h1 = 200% (32px) h2 = 150% (24 px) h3 = 133% (18 px) body = 100% (16px)
Font adjustments text-transform: UPPERCASE, lowercase, Capitalize text-decoration: none, underline, overline, line-through
Leading (ie line height): Space between lines Measurement from the bottom of the lowest letter (descender) to top of the tallest letter(ascender) Best given in em so that it is relative size Alignment of vertical height Between the lines Alignment of vertical height Between the lines
Letter & Word Spacing Kerning letter spacing Letter-spacing: space between each letter Given in em
Alignment text-align: left, right, center, justify vertical-align: Intended to align inline elements (not text in div or p) text-indent: Indent lines of text (can take negative values)
CSS Box Model
Box Dimensions Div{ width: 300 px; height: 300px; background-color: rgb(0, 61, 157);} p{ width: 75%; height:75% background-color:rgb(100,20,0);}

Limiting Size Proliferation of different devices for browsing = more dynamic webpages! (and relative sizes) Need to prevent things from becoming illegible / take up too much space min-width, min-height, max-width, max-height, Example
Overflow You have too much to say, but your box is too small! How do you handle this travesty? overflow: hidden; hides the extra content overflow:scroll; includes a scroll bar
Border Margin Padding
So What? Borders separate the edge of one box from another Margins sit outside the edge of the border, and use them to increase space between boxes Padding is the space between the border of a box and any content within.
Size distinction If you specify a width: borders, margin and padding are added to its width and height Width = Content box size, in W3C compliant web browsers etc, border padding and margin are added to this
White Space White space is your friend, use it to make your text more legible and separate parts of your website We don t need that stupid <br> tag

Borders border-width (px, or thin, medium, thick) border-top, border-right, border-bottom, border-left, border-width: 1px 5px 5px 1px;
Border Style Default = blank! solid, dotted, dashed, double, groove, ridge, inset, outset
But wait, there s more! border-color RGB, HEX, or CSS color Change the color for each side! Same shorthand, control all 4 at the same time border-color: #FF0000 #00FF00 #0000FF #000000;}
Padding Space between border and content A lot: None: Same shorthand padding: 5px 10px 15px 5px;
Margins Space around the outside of the box. margin-top: px or % Shorthand: Top, Right, Bottom, Left
Centering Can automatically center boxes on the page! Must set width in px (otherwise box takes up screen size) Set left and right margin to auto Margin: 10px auto 10px auto This should also be combined with text-align to make the text centered in the box
Border: shorthand Width, style, and color in one property (in this order!) p{ width: 250px: border: 3px dotted #0088dd;}
Change Inline/Block Force one to behave like the other (cause an indent or not) Why? One example: Lists are block elements, but you want to put them all in a line to make navigation for your site li { } display: inline; margin-right: 10px;
Tadaaaaa!!!
CSS3 Properties are cool And a lot more information. The CSS3 properties are as follows: border-image box-shadow border-radius If you are interested in these, I highly recommend checking out Chapter 13, and feel free to ask me any questions (note they are not! supported everywhere)
External vs Internal CSS External a secondary document which holds all of your styles This is best, since if you have multiple pages with the same style and you want to change something, its in one place This will show up next class (one thing at a time) Internal css styles inside the same page as your html structure elements Normally placed inside <head> tag <style> element
External CSS document File extension:.css Should only include CSS code (no html code!) <link href= filename.css rel= stylesheet type= text/css >
Homework You must still meet the requirements! Two Pages with all the stuff you should have from before (list, pictures, links) and your text all prettied up with CSS Take your same two pages, and play with the border elements: all of the stuff we talked about today. Move your text around the page, make it look like a chess board, something, anything. EXTERNAL CSS, save it as a separate.css document!
Now is the last time for questions, with me here in person before your first Quiz I will also accept questions about what you are working on right now! I even bet everyone could finish their homework before the class is over
