This document will guide you through the workflow for entering your research into the IMPOWR database prior to the website going live. You have been asked to contribute to this endeavor. Section 1: Navigation The tabs at the top of the page provide the highest level of navigation. Home Tab The HOME tab returns you to the home page. On this page you can access the topics pages, relevant videos, recent Tweets, current news, and most recently updated research. Research Topics Tab This tab takes you to a list of the topics and subtopics that make up the database. The dropdown menu allows you to directly navigate to a specific topic page where you will find related videos, recent research in that topic, current news tagged under the topic area, and resources particularly helpful for conducting research. Database Tab Since you are reading this document you have already found the Database tab. From this tab you can also read and print the guidelines for completing each of the five content areas for a subtopic within a country. The guidelines are questions that we would like you to consider as you are entering the data. In addition, the dropdown menu gives access to the "How to Get Started Page" and "Research Tools" page where you will find a number of guides and sources that may help you in your research. About IMPOWR Tab This tab details the background and approach to the IMPOWR research structure. This is a good starting point for understanding the purpose of the IMPOWR project. Related links on this page allows the project to give credit to contributing editors, distribute the IMPOWR brochure, and provide contacts to the project leads. CEDAW Tab The CEDAW tab provides background information on CEDAW that allows a user to better understand the linkage between CEDAW and the IMPOWR research structure. Login/Logout Tab The LOGIN tab gives you researcher level access to enter and edit data in the IMPOWR database. If you have forgotten your password and attempt to log in, you can click on "Have you forgotten your password?" in the red dialogue box and a link will be ed to you that will allow you to update your password. Also when you log in, you can click on the Edit tab to update your username, address, password or time zone. Confidential and Proprietary Page 3

Volunteer The Volunteer brings you directly to the How to Get Started page. If you have not reached out to us using the contact form or you need more information about next steps in being a volunteer researcher, you can find the information here, including research tools and guides. How to Donate The Support IMPOWR links to our donation page through the ABA Fund for Justice and Education. In addition to research contributions, we always welcome financial contributions as well so that the project can continue to grow and reach a wide audience around the world. Connect with Us This will link you to our Contact IMPOWR page, where you can find out how to contact us via snail mail, phone or . Volunteers can also fill out the contact form so that we can know more about interests and affiliations as we welcome our volunteers to the IMPOWR team! Our Research This page links directly to the research topics page. On the left you can use the drop down menu to access the 193 countries in the database or browse the topics in further details by selecting them on the left. Site Search The new search feature allows you to do keyword searches across the website. An advanced search option gives you even more control over the result set. Use this feature to help you find existing content. Section 2: Research Workflow For your country and subtopic combination, there may or may not already be research entered into the tool. You need to evaluate the state of the research. In the following sections you will learn how to select a country and a subtopic. Once these are selected, you will see that some of the subtopics may already have categories and projects at various levels of completion. Some subtopics may not have any research completed. Your job is to create the categories and projects where they do not currently exist. As needed, you may also decide to edit existing categories and projects. Look at the flowchart below to determine whether you should be creating or editing a category. As you can see from the diagram below, creating and editing are two different functions. Confidential and Proprietary Page 4

Workflow Select Country Use the drop down list to select the country of interest. You can start typing the country name in the box and it will auto complete. Click "GO" to proceed to the country page. Edit or Begin The "Current Topics/Subtopics" box shows the subtopics that have been started in the database. Choose one to edit. Then click "GO". The "Begin a New Subtopic" box shows the subtopics that is still missing in that country. Choose one to create. Then click "GO" Edit or Create If Subtopic Summary exists you can edit it now. If Subtopic Summary does not exist you can create it from the ACTIONS menu. Edit or Create If Current Legal Framework exists you can edit it now. If Current Legal Framework does not exist you can create it from the ACTIONS menu. Edit or Create If Law Reform Efforts exists you can edit it now. If Law Reform Efforts does not exist you can create it from the ACTIONS menu. Edit or Create If Enforcement and Protection of Equality in Civil Society exists you can edit it now. If Enforcement and Protection of Equality in Civil Society does not exist you can create it from the ACTIONS menu. Edit or Create If Role of Traditions exists you can edit it now. If Role of Traditions does not exist you can create it from the ACTIONS menu. Edit or Create You can select a project to edit. You can create a new project. Confidential and Proprietary Page 5

Section 3: Selecting a Country Once you log into the tool, the first step is to select a country. The country block appears on each page of the Research Topics and Database tabs. If you are not logged into the tool you can still view all the data, but you will not be able to edit. Once you log in, select a country from the list. You can begin typing in the country box and the names of the country will auto fill. Or you can click on the dropdown and choose a country. Press GO when you have the desired country in the box. The countries are alphabetical in the list. You will be taken to the country page. For now, there is basic information about the country. We will not be asking you to edit the information at this time. Confidential and Proprietary Page 6

Section 4: Selecting a Subtopic On the country page you can make two choices, edit a subtopic with existing data or start a new subtopic. An instruction box is available for guidance. Each subtopic can have as many as five different categories of information, as well as multiple projects. These categories are: a) Subtopic summary b) Current Legal Framework c) Law Reform d) Enforcement and Protection of Equality in Civil Society e) Role of Traditions If any of these categories have any information, the subtopic will appear in the Select Topic/Subtopic menu block. Follow the instructions under item 1 below to access this subtopic to edit an existing category or create a new category. If none of these categories have been previously entered into the database, the subtopics will instead appear in the Begin a New Subtopic menu block. Follow the instructions under item 2 below to access this subtopic and begin to enter its categories. 1. If any information has been put into a specific subtopic for this country, you will see it available from the Select Topic/Subtopic menu block. The image below shows the menu block closed and expanded. To edit one of these subtopics, click on the desired one and then click GO. 2. If no information has been added to a specific subtopic for this country, you will instead see it available from the Begin a New Subtopic menu block. The image below shows the menu block closed and expanded. To create one of these subtopics, click on the desired one and then click GO. Confidential and Proprietary Page 7

The next screen provides an explanation of the topic and subtopic you selected. It also displays any additional categories that were previously entered. The goal is to fill out as many categories as possible. For the Chile example we are using here, you can see that only the Current Legal Framework category has been completed. You can select to create one of the missing categories as noted to the left in the ACTIONS box (see explaination in Section 6 of this guide), or create a new project (see Section 7 of this guide), or edit the existing categories (see Section 9). Confidential and Proprietary Page 8

Section 5: Using the Text Editor When you are entering your research you will need to understand how to use the text editor in the input tool. Before we explain the categories of your research, let s walk through the menu bar so that you have a clear understanding as to how to enter and edit the text. Entering text There are three ways to enter text (1a) type directly on the screen; (1b) insert unformatted text from a text-based editor (such as Notepad); or (1c) insert formatted text from Word. If you are using option (1b) or (1c), keep your text as simple as possible in you text editor. Avoid extra blank lines and styled titles. Highlight the text in your editor and use CTRL+C to copy. Click on the appropriate icon (1b) for text or (1c) for Word. Paste your text from your editor into the new box on the screen by using CTRL+V, and click on the INSERT button. It will move your text to the Discussion area of the screen. TEXT WORD 1b 1c 1a Enter text in this area if you are typing directly into the data input tool. Click on button 1b or 1c if you are using a text editor or Word. Copy your text and paste into this window. Then click on the INSERT button and your text will appear in the discussion window to edit further. Confidential and Proprietary Page 9

Headings Headings will format automatically. There is no need to bold or italicize your headings. Place your cursor on the header. Use the style widget (2) to choose whether this is a second level header or a third level header. The tool will apply the correct style and spacing for the header. 2 Paragraphs Text other than headers are paragraphs. You will see the word paragraph displayed in the style widget (2) when you put your cursor on the text. The tool will apply the correct style and spacing for the paragraph. You can highlight text and click on Bold (3) or Italics (4) as needed. You can also turn lists into bullets (5) or numbered lists (6) by highlighting all the text and clicking on the one of the list buttons Embedded Hyperlinks While some of the categories allow you to attach links at the end of your research, you can also embed links directly into the discussion. Highlight the text that you want to turn into a hyperlink. Then click the hyperlink button (7). 7 8 When you click on the link (7) you will see this box to complete the action: Link URL: enter the URL in format Target: select open link in new window Click on the INSERT button. You can remove a hyperlink by putting your cursor on the hyperlink and click on the break hyperlink button (8). Confidential and Proprietary Page 10

Uploading PDFs There are times that you may want to link some text to a pdf file rather than to an external URL. Instead of entering a link URL, click on the file button next to the Link URL field and follow these steps closely. The file uploader window will appear. On the left side you will see a section titled Navigation (a). Beneath it, you will find a message area indicating what directory is loaded (b). For uploading documents you should be in the DOCS directory. If that is not the case, click on docs in the navigation structure and verify in the message area that Directory docs is loaded. a c a & b check for DOCS directory c click to find file on your computer b Confidential and Proprietary Page 11

Once you are in the DOCS directory, you can browse your computer or network for the desired pdf by clicking the Upload button (c). A file box will open. Click on browse (d) to find the file on your computer. When you have selected the file, the filename will appear in the box. Click the blue UPLOAD button (e) to start moving the file. c d e When the file is uploaded there are three places to look for validation that the upload has completed. The filename is highlighted in yellow (f). The message area states that the file is uploaded (g). And the file name is displayed in the white box in the bottom right (h). Click on Send to tinymce at the top of the screen (i) to return to the Insert/Edit Link box. i f g h Confidential and Proprietary Page 12

You will see the filename filled into the Insert/edit link box. Click Insert to finish. Uploading Images Uploading images is very similar to uploading files. Place your cursor where you want the image to appear. Then click on the image icon (9). 9 The Insert/edit image box will open. This is very similar to the link box. Click on the file button next to the Image URL field. Confidential and Proprietary Page 13

Now when you get the uploader window, you will need to navigate to the IMAGES directory (a). Again, you can verify that you are in the correct directory by checking the message area. Then click the Upload button (c) to go to your computer and find the image. a c a & b check for IMAGES directory c click to find file on your computer b Follow steps d-i as described in the Uploading a PDF section. When you are returned to the Insert/Edit image box, the filename will be displayed, along with a preview of the image. Enter a brief image description that will be displayed if a user cannot download images. The title is optional; it will display beneath the image. Then click the INSERT button. Confidential and Proprietary Page 14

Special Characters If you need special characters beyond what is available on your keyboard, click the special character button (10) and select from the choices presented Horizontal Rule To place a horizontal line in the discussion, put your cursor on a blank link and click the horizontal rule button (11). Enter a width of 400px and a height of 1. Then click INSERT. Citations To change text into a citation, highlight the text and click the citation button (12). Enter a title in the box that comes up on the screen. This title will be available to a reader when they hover their mouse over the citation. The citation text will be automatically italicized and underlined. Footnotes It is important to note that you cannot import footnotes from Word or any other word processing program. In order for the annotation to link to the footnote you must follow this process and remove all superscripts and footnotes from your document. To enter a footnote, place your cursor at the point you want the footnote inserted. Then click on the footnote button (13). In the box that comes up on the screen, enter the text for the footnote and click the INSERT button. You may enter as many footnotes in the discussion as needed, and they will automatically number at the bottom of the document. NOTE: you do not need to number or add bullets to the footnotes. The system will properly format them. Links Fields If you have the option to add links to a category or a project you need to enter both a text title and a URL. The title will be visible to the public and will become the hyperlink on the page. Use thoughtful titles for all your links to make it easier for the audience to understand the meaning of the link. Format the links as show in the instructions on the screen. For each link type in the document, you can enter multiple links. If you want to add more links than displayed on the screen, simply click on the ADD ANOTHER ITEM button and you will be given additional fields. You can do this as many times as necessary. Confidential and Proprietary Page 15

Section 6: Creating Categories There are five categories that we would like you to enter: 1. Subtopic Summary Information 2. Current Legal Framework 3. Law Reform Efforts 4. Enforcement and Protection of Equality in Civil Society 5. Role of Traditions Look at the Actions menu in the top left of the screen. We would like you to use this menu to enter each of the categories. Remember; only use this menu to create new categories if they don t already exist. If there are no categories entered or missing categories for your subtopic in your country, then start creating the missing categories by choosing the appropriate action. Use the instructions below to complete each screen and save. Note: you can now do multiple actions for this country and subtopic without having to reselect these parameters. Common Fields Country, Topic/Subtopic, Discussion and Links On each of the category screens you will need to re-enter the Country and Topic/Subtopic fields. Please use the same country and topic/subtopic that you used to get here. This duplicate entry will be enhanced for the live website. Country and Subtopic: You no longer need to select these. They will be filled with the country and subtopic you selected prior. Discussion: Each screen also has a free text area called Discussion. This is where you will enter and format your text. Use the information on the Guidelines tab to inform your content. Refer back to Section 5 to learn how to use the editor. Confidential and Proprietary Page 16

There are five categories of information to complete in a subtopic: 1. Subtopic Summary Information Screen After entering the Discussion, as described above, click on the SAVE button. For this screen the Discussion is an overview of the status or progress of the topic/subtopic in the country you are researching. 2. Current Legal Framework Screen Enter the Discussion, as described above. For the Discussion, consider the following Guidelines: Is the subtopic guaranteed/addressed in the Constitution? If so, please cite the provision and language. Is the subtopic established in the law, executive order or regulations? If so, please cite the law, statute, code, order or regulation. Does the law prohibit discrimination against women in this subtopic? If so, please cite a specific law. Does the law prohibit discrimination by government authorities as well as private individuals and entities? What penalties may be imposed for discrimination in violation of the law? While you are free to embed hyperlinks in the Discussion, there are three link sections in this document GLIN, Other Primary Sources, and ROLI that we would like you to additionally complete. See Section 5 for instruction on how to complete the links fields. Click on the SAVE button. 3. Law Reform Efforts Screen After entering the Discussion click on the SAVE button. For the Discussion, consider the following Guidelines: What law reform projects on this topic have been completed? Please provide a general description and/or link to project details or report, if possible. Use the Add Project feature to provide details. What were the results of each project; was it successful? If so, why? If not, why? Are the results sustainable over time? If so, why? If not, why? What additional law reform projects should be undertaken to guarantee the subtopic? 4. Enforcement and Protection of Equality in Civil Society Screen After the Discussion click on the SAVE button. For the Discussion, consider the following Guidelines: Are civil society institutions engaged in the establishing and protecting rights relevant to this subtopic? If so, which ones? (E.g., NGOs, academic institutions, professional societies and organizations, women s rights groups, etc.) Does the involvement of civil society institutions have a positive effect? Can or should civil society institutions be more involved? 5. Role of Traditions Screen After entering the Discussion click on the SAVE button. For the Discussion, consider the following Guidelines: How do religious, community and/or traditional practices affect this subtopic? If they have a negative impact on this subtopic, how can such practices best be addressed? Confidential and Proprietary Page 17

Section 7: Editing Existing Categories If you want to change the categories that have already been entered into the tool, DO NOT USE THE ACTIONS MENU. You don t want to create new categories if they already exist. Instead, click the category title. You will see a small menu bar appear to the right of the category title (this may be hard to see if the title is long). Select edit from this menu bar and you will be taken directly to the edit screen. After you edit the category, be sure to click the save button at the bottom of the screen.
