3 3 SEO Synergy Disclaimer The following lesson is based on my personal experiences and the methods I personally use which may or may not be the best or most effective practise. Introduction The following lesson looks at which keywords will work best for your projects, in terms of being able to rank and stick your site on the first page of Google and the quality of traffic your site receives. Keywords: All good internet marketing campaigns rely on keywords, in fact to be successful you need to start with the right keywords or you will either have to work ten times harder to compete or you will end up failing. SEO Synergy is no different to any other SEO method in as much as choosing the correct keywords are crucial to being successful. The process for finding keywords has been shaken up considerably over the last year or so with the demise of the Google keyword Tool and the introduction of the new Keyword Planner. It was this one event which pushed me towards a new way of looking for and choosing keywords for my projects. The following methods will utilise the new Google Keyword Planner & not paid software. If you do own keyword software, then by all means use it. Google Keyword Planner: To access the Google keyword Planner you will now need an AdWords account (you can open one even if you have been banned from AdWords in the past; as I have). This is of course a little different to the old tool; as anyone could use it regardless of whether or not they had an AdWords account. So if you don t already have an account sign up now and get yourself an Adwords account so you can use the keyword planner tool Do that now.
4 4 SEO Synergy Do This First Make sure you have an Adwords account. Having a Google account does not mean that you will have an Adwords account. For those of you who do not have an Adwords account go to the following link: The page should look something like the screen shot below. Look for the Get started now button (see cursor). Click the button. Complete the account set-up process (you will find this is self-explanatory). If you already have a Google account you can choose to link your Adwords to the same account or you might want to keep it separate. The option you choose is entirely personal preference.
5 5 SEO Synergy Step 1 Log in to your Google Account; then click the Account link (as the picture below shows) Step 2 Next; click products (see the picture below).
6 6 SEO Synergy Step 3 Click on the Adwords tab as the picture below shows. If the Adwords tab doesn t show up in your account this may simply mean that you haven t signed up for Adwords. If this happens to you; use the information above to sign-up for an account (Adwords). Note: Google are constantly changing things which include how you access some products. If after accessing your Google account you do not see Products or you can t find Adwords use the following link (providing you have set up an AdWords account):
7 7 SEO Synergy Finding Great Keywords Great, I'm assuming you now have access to the tool... So let's get on with the process of finding some golden keywords to work with. Here's the process: The keyword Planner has three options for use as you can see below. Click the top option; Search for keyword and ad group ideas (see cursor below). Step 1 Enter your keyword ideas or keywords in the box (as the screen shot shows below).
8 8 SEO Synergy Step 2 Apply filters. Filters Targeting: The first filter you need to set is the Targeting filter. This will show you the search results for the given area. In the old keyword tool you could simply choose all English speaking, with the Keyword Planner you must select the regions (in our case countries). The default filter is set to show results for the US, you could stick with just the US or add more. I always add the UK. Alternatively, if you are using SEO Synergy for ranking a local site for example you would add local search areas at this point. To add more countries/ regions to your search; click the edit icon as the picture above shows. Then click the Advanced Search link. You can then choose from the countries or areas you would like to include in your search. The screen shot below shows me adding Australia to my search. As you can see; all I need to do is look for the region and then click Add. Leave the other 3 Targeting filters as they are (providing you are targeting an English speaking audience).then check the low competition box as the screen shot below shows.
9 9 SEO Synergy Don t be tempted to add Average monthly searches with the Google Keyword Planner (things don t work in quite the same way as they did in the old keyword tool). Last; targeting filter is Google and search partners. Click where it says Google (under targeting). Check Google and search partners. Now click Get Ideas (the button). Tabs The results are displayed over two tabs as the screen shot below shows: As you can see the options are: Ad group ideas and keyword ideas. Personally I always begin with Keyword Ideas as the results under this tab are related closely to the term I entered, see the picture below:
10 10 SEO Synergy The Ad group ideas tab is worth taking a look at as you will often find additional related ideas for great keywords which you may want to look at closer. Continuing with the Keyword Ideas tab; let s go a little deeper. If you look at the screen shot above you will see straight away that I seem to have struck gold and hit a term with a ton of high traffic keywords, but let me tell you; it won t always look like this and strangely; highly searched keywords is not my priority. Now list down as many of the search terms which you yourself would enter if you were searching for a solution in your chosen niche and then complete searches for the terms (If they do not show on your original search). Why do this? Digging just a little deeper is often enough to put you ahead of the crowd. It s a fact; most would-be internet marketers either don t know what they are doing or in many cases they just can t be bothered (lazy). This means that there are a large number of great keywords which go unnoticed simply because Google doesn t pull them up on an initial search. This has always been the case, even with the old tool (more often with the new). Search Results Google have made some changes to the way this tool displays results, some that we know about and a lot more that we don t. In the past it has been of upmost importance to search for low competition
11 11 SEO Synergy high search keywords. And while this is still a great method it is becoming harder and harder to do simply because the results shown in the new Google keyword Planner are often a little erratic, but that isn t a problem. So what makes a good keyword today? Well believe it or not finding the right keywords to use for each of your projects is still pretty easy. Why? Well Instead of searching and searching for the keyword with the highest monthly search total I now focus on highly targeted buyer orientated keywords. The keyword still needs to be low competition, but without the emphasis on the high monthly search total. I call this type of keyword (phrase) a buyer driven search term (buying keywords or triggers) and it works simply because searches falling into this category (or people searching using these terms) are far more likely to purchase your product or service which basically means that you need far less traffic in order to convert your products and offers into sales. Suggested search criteria using Googles keyword Planner Low competition It should be a buying term It should be the kind of term which a potential customer may use as a search term The monthly search total should ideally be above 300 Can you be profitable with low search terms? Yes you can, you see although there may be bags of traffic for some keywords many of the visitors directly attributed to this traffic may not be looking for a solution or they may not be desperate enough to purchase a solution there and then. Unique & Targeted search phrase / keyword ideas Over the last month or so I have started to incorporate niche specific questions and answers into the equation using Yahoo Answers as a source. While specific Yahoo Answer questions may not show any search total at all in the Google keyword Planner they really do give you an otherwise unattainable insight into exactly what your potential customer is searching for. This additional input may work really well for many niches and of course not so well for others. Most of my sites are built around weird little niches so using Yahoo Answers works remarkably well. Don t worry too much if this element doesn t apply to your site, it s not crucial (just helpful). Jot down some of the more interesting questions and answers and work them into phrases to run through the keyword planner. Do this manually or try this tool (YNicher) free and premium versions are available at the time of publication.
12 12 SEO Synergy Example; buying keywords (based on case study) The broader niche in the case study project (I built for Niche Synergy) is 'Pearly penile papules ; however I only wanted to attract people who were looking for ways in which they could get rid of penile papules at home. My target market pearly penile papules removal' In this example I needed to come up with a small list of good 'Buying' keywords which fall within the self-treatment area. Take a look at the list below for some of the keywords I think might fit. These are just a bunch of phrases which sprang to mind. Pearly penile papules treatments Pearly penile papules remedy Pearly penile papules cure Penile papules removal methods How to get rid of pearly penile papules Natural pearly penile papules removal All of these phrases look like they might work well as buying keywords, but of course I'd have to check them out first as they might well suck big time. You will also notice that one of the phrases is red, the reason for this is when the term treatment or treatments is used in can often pull up medical authority websites, this is a danger. And of course there will be similarly dangerous phrases in all sorts of niches and markets, all of which you really need to avoid. The process Write down as many buying keywords as you can think of, ideally these will be the kind of terms your potential customer will enter as a search term. Don t forget to incorporate questions sourced from Yahoo Answers into the equation as this will help you zone right in on exactly what problems you audience has and what solutions they are looking for. Example list: Pearly penile papules remedy
13 13 SEO Synergy Pearly penile papules cure Penile papules removal methods How to get rid of pearly penile papules Natural pearly penile papules removal Make sure it s safe to continue look for these sites As a rule of thumb; if you find YouTube videos, press releases, doc sharing sites, article sites, review/ affiliate sites, Yahoo answers on the first page it's pretty safe to assume that you will rank high for that particular keyword without too much work. Now check all of the keywords from your list and dump any of the phrases which look like they might pose a problem. How many keywords do you need? It really depends on the size of the niche and your particular project however I normally begin with around 2-6 buying keywords (it can be done with just one, but you run the risk of limiting your potential profits). Additional keywords While searching for keywords it's always a good idea to pick out a few keywords which do relate to the niche but are not buying keywords. I will sprinkle these 'Not so great' keywords throughout any content I produce. Why? Because it makes everything look nice and natural. Summary: I've covered everything you need to know about keywords in order to successfully rank and stick a brand new website on the first page of Google (using SEO Synergy). But I realise that some of you don't have the time to read through everything, and of course many of you will want to refer back to keyword selection. So to make it a lot easier I will summarise the steps you need to take right here: 1. We are only looking for buying related keywords 2. Write out as many trigger keywords as you can think of 3. Check out Yahoo answers for highly relevant questions in order to come up with unique search terms 4. Google keyword planner Sign up for an Adwords account. 5. Click the link in the planner (top) which says; Search for new keyword and ad group ideas.
14 14 SEO Synergy 6. Add your keyword phrase to the top field, where it says; your product or service. If you have a list of keywords; do individual searches (you will get better results) 7. Apply the filters: Targeting US and UK (add more English speaking countries if you wish) 8. Apply the filters: Targeting Google and search partners 9. Apply the filter: Keyword filters - Competition [Low] 10. Record results with 300+ searches 11. Repeat searches until you have 2-6 buying keywords that fit the criteria as well as a number of related terms. 12. Weed out any keyword which looks difficult to rank (based on actual search results). Q & A keyword Trick As mentioned above one of the easiest ways to rank is for Yahoo Answer style terms. As mentioned above the trick is not to get hung up on looking for big search totals with low competition. If you can find them great, but it is getting harder and harder to do. Add long tail Q & A style terms for fast ranking and real traffic. This tip really works, of course these terms are not the money keywords you want to rank for but they do rank almost immediately (1 2 days), then you get real organic traffic. The traffic you get from this type of keyword is very small but as you add more of these phrases and rank for them those few uniques grow and google can see traffic originating from many varied and different points. Google also sees different entry points to your site which makes it more and more relevant too your websites niche. Eventually this method will push your site up SERPs for all keywords including the money terms you really want to rank for. This is also a great strategy to use when nothing else is giving your site the momentum. Combining this strategy with everything else detailed throughout this course will give your site the push it needs. Tabloid Twist The tabloid Twist is an upgrade which takes this strategy to the next level and literally supercharges rankings. Read it now if you have it. It s not a compulsory element but it does push things along so much quicker. Conclusion: You don't need hundreds of phrases to make SEO Synergy work; so don't get carried away with keyword research. Keep it simple.
15 15 SEO Synergy Once you have your list of keywords make sure you record them all with search totals. I normally use a spread sheet for this because it makes it easier for future reference, but anything will do. Incidentally, I now use Microsoft office for doc s, spread sheets and a lot more, but if you don t own Microsoft office and don t feel like buying it then you could try out a free alternative called Open Office. I actually used Open Office for years & only recently switched to Microsoft office. Open Office- Free download Alternatively you could sign up for a Microsoft office 60 day trial. You will need windows7 or above for the new Microsoft office 13 to work.
