1 Calgary Journal Online Visual Editors The visual editors are responsible for: Creating the main, top rotating images on the website Creating Photo Galleries Inserting audio and video files Front Page Set-up The visual editors are responsible for creating the rotating banner that appears at the top of the page. There should be a minimum of three images and no more than six. Rotating Banner The top area on the front page will feature 3 to 6 rotating images. 1. Create the images in Photoshop Create 3 or 4 images that are exactly 700 px by 350 px. 2. Upload the images Login to the Admin panel and click on the Media on the left Click on _FPRotator on the left *under (Resized) Click the green upload button at the top left Choose files then click start upload 3. Setting up the Slider Go to Components > Unite Nivo Slider Pro (near the bottom) Click on Edit Slides to the right of Front Page Rotator Click New button at top left to add a new slide, or click on one of the current titles to change an existing slide. Enter a Title, by Slide image click on Select to browse to the image uploaded in Step Two, then Insert In Slide Description, enter the headline for the slide (make sure to right click > paste as plain text) highlight it and make it Bold Below the headline, enter the deck, highlight it and make sure it is a paragraph Browse to the article that you are linking to on the live site Scroll down and click Yes by Activate Link Copy and paste the full URL into the Link field Link Open in: Same Window Scroll to the top and click on Save. 1
2 Repeat this process for all images, and check the slider on the live site to ensure the stories are linked correctly. NOTE: there is sometimes a bit of a delay from when the slides are updated to when they appear on the live site. Creating a photo gallery Preparing Images for upload All images need to be exactly 1100px by 600px. If the image can be cropped to exactly these dimensions and look good, use the following process to create an image with these exact dimensions. Click on the Crop tool, see options at the top and choose W x H x Resolution in the dropdown menu, then enter the information as below (including the px ): This will create a 1100px by 600px horizontal image. For images that are vertically oriented or do not crop well to be exactly 1100 px by 600px, we can create a photo collage or two or three images Go to File >> New and create a canvas with a Width of 1100 pixels, Height: 600px, Resolution: 72 and Background Contents: White. 2
3 Then go to File >> Place to insert the images on to the blank canvas. Remember to press enter/return to complete the placement. Align and resize the images to be as uniform as possible. Go to File >> Save for Web (Or Export > Save for Web) to change to jpeg, and save. Creating the gallery In the admin area, go to Components >> Ignite Gallery Click on Categories, then click green New Category button at the top left. Enter the Title, leave alias blank, ensure the profile is The Lens, and parent file for the category is The Lens (this should be the case by default). Leave Menu Image, Created by, etc blank. Both the Menus Description AND Description fields should contain the following: A short description of the gallery as a Paragraph (if associated with an article, this could be the deck and/or first sentence) Photos by contributor s name (italics) Published on: date (in bold.) 3
4 Scroll up and click Save and Close. Go to Categories and click manage images to the right of the Category just created and upload the images. Once the images are uploaded, enter the cutline information under description. If you are copying and pasting, use the paste as plain text function. Change the Published status to Published by clicking on the red x. Placing Photo Galleries in Articles Once a gallery has been created, it will appear in the The Lens section on the main menu, but it can also be embedded directly into an associated article. To place the gallery at the bottom of the article, just above the address of the author, put the cursor in this position. Click on the Gallery icon (below the body of the article on the left): Leave Type as Single Gallery Images, choose the gallery you want to appear from the Category Drop-down menu, Change the profile to The Lens Insert Content, then click Save and Close. 4
5 A snippet of code such as: {igallery id=91 cid=165 pid=4 type=category children=0 addlinks=0 tags= limit=0} will appear in the back end, but the gallery should show up in this spot when the article is live. Double check to ensure it works on the live view. 6 Click add media to upload the edited photo. In Attachment display settings on the right, change size to full size then click insert into post. Copy and paste the description in the body field below (include photo by in bold) the picture AND the first paragraph and photo credit excerpt field. Note: To bold the photo credit in the excerpt, add the HTML tag: <strong> Photo by </strong> On the right, click on Set featured image and choose that image to be featured Then click Publish For Faces Videos 6
7 Follow the instruction above but instead of adding a large image to the body, embed the video code from AudioAcrobat. For the feature image (which will appear on the main page), grab a screen shot of the subject and add a play button as seen in this example: Klmartin@mtroyal.ca for the transparent play button.
