Introduction Welcome to MICS Compiler! MICS Compiler is a web-based database management application which provides easy access to key indicators collected through the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys. The application is designed in collaboration with UNICEF. MICS Compiler is based on DevInfo technology and allows users to: Search across surveys and indicators View results in the form of customizable tables, graphs and maps View cross-country comparisons as well as analysis of individual countries Whether you are a UN professional, a government program officer, an NGO worker, or a concerned citizen, you will find MICS Compiler a powerful tool for your research, analysis and advocacy tasks. Accessing MICS Compiler MICS Compiler is a web application hosted on a web server. The application can be accessed using an Internet browser. Follow the steps below to access the application on your computer: Open MS Internet Explorer or any other Internet browser Type the following web address and press ENTER: 5

Learning MICS Compiler MICS Compiler has been designed with a user-friendly interface requiring little or no training to use. If you wish to view a quick tour of the main features of MICS Compiler, click Take a Tour on the MICS Compiler home page. Detailed information on the various features of MICS Compiler can be found in the following two chapters of this User s Guide: Chapter 1, Searching for Data, explains how to search for data in MICS Compiler. Chapter 2, Tables, Graphs and Maps, explains how to view data in and customize tables, graphs and maps in MICS Compiler. 6

C H A P T E R 1 Searching for Data This chapter explains how to search for data in MICS Compiler. Open the MICS Compiler application in your web browser, using the web address provided in the Introduction. The home page will open up as follows (Fig. 1.1): Fig MICS Compiler home page 7

The home page is the gateway to using MICS Compiler to search for data. Here you can also find a brief description of MICS Compiler as well as links to a tour and the User s Guide. To begin searching for MICS data, click Start to open the data search window (Fig. 1.2). Fig Data search window displaying the Surveys tab Note that the data search window contains the following three tabs: Surveys Indicators Data By default, the data search window opens to the Surveys tab. 8

Note: Searching by survey or by indicator MICS Compiler allows users to start searching for data either by survey or by indicator. To search by survey, click the Survey tab first to make your selections, and then click the Indicator tab. To search by indicator, reverse the process: click the Indicator tab first to make your selections, and then click the Survey tab. Surveys The Surveys tab displays a list of all MICS surveys whose data has been entered into MICS Compiler. From here you can search for data across one or more surveys. Note that each survey name is defined by the following three elements: Country name MICS Round (for example, MICS3) Year of data collection To select one or more surveys for which you wish to view data, select the check box next to the desired survey(s). A summary of your survey selections appears at the lower left of the window. To view and select surveys by geographic region or by MICS round, select the appropriate grouping category from the left panel of the Surveys tab (Fig 1.3). Click and to expand and collapse the survey lists as desired. 9

Fig Selecting survey grouping categories from the left panel of the Surveys tab Note: Searching by region in the Survey tab When you select the By region grouping category, MICS Compiler allows you to search for survey data from countries in that particular region. For example, the West and Central Africa grouping category contains all available surveys from countries in the West and Central Africa region, not regional estimates for West and Central Africa. Note that regional estimates are not included in MICS Compiler. The menu bar below the Surveys tab contains the following additional options to help you search for and select surveys: Select all Selects all the surveys in the list 10

Clear all List only surveys for which data exist Search box Clears all the selections in the list When selected, reduces the survey list to show only those surveys containing data for the selected indicators. Note that this option is only enabled if you make your indicator selections first. For example, if you first select one or more indicators under the Indicator tab and then click the Surveys tab, the List only surveys for which data exist option will become enabled. Select this option to display only those surveys which contain data for your selected indicators. Clear this check box to display all surveys, regardless of whether they contain data for your selected indicators. Allows you to enter keywords to search for surveys by country name When you are finished with your selections, click either the Indicators tab or Next (at the right of the menu bar) to view and select available indicators. Indicators The Indicators tab displays a list of all indicators used in the MICS surveys whose data has been entered into MICS Compiler (Fig. 1.4). From here you can search for data for one or more indicators. 11

Fig Data search window displaying the Indicators tab By default, indicators are grouped by topic. Click and to expand and collapse the indicator lists as desired. Note that further expanding the indicator list displays the various subgroups available for selection (Fig. 1.5). 12

Fig. 1.5 Viewing available subgroups for selection under an indicator To select one or more indicators for which you wish to view data, select the check box next to the desired indicator(s). A summary of your indicator selections appears at the lower left of the window. To view and select indicators by list, select the By list grouping category from the left panel of the Indicators tab (Fig. 1.6). 13

Fig Selecting indicator grouping categories from the left panel of the Indicators tab As with the Surveys tab, the menu bar below the Indicators tab contains additional options to help you search for and select indicators: Select all Clear all Selects all the indicators in the list Clears all the selections in the list List only indicators for which data exist When selected, reduces the indicator list to show only those indicators for which data is available in the selected surveys. Note that this option is only enabled if you make your survey selections first. For example, if you first select 14

one or more surveys under the Surveys tab and then click the Indicator tab, the List only indicators for which data exist option will become enabled. Select this option to display only those indicators for which data is available in your selected surveys. Clear this check box to display all indicators, regardless of whether data exist for them in your selected surveys. Subgroup Filter Opens a window which allows you to automatically select subgroups for all selected indicators (Fig. 1.7) Fig. 1.7 Subgroup Filter window 15

Click and to expand and collapse the subgroup lists as desired. Note that by default, Total is always selected. Select the desired subgroups and click Done when finished. Your subgroup selections will be applied across all selected indicators. Metadata Search box Expands or collapses the metadata (information) window for the highlighted indicator Allows you to enter keywords to search for indicators by indicator name Other options The following options on the menu bar are located to the right of the tabs: View Selections Start Over Back Next Allows you to view your selections. Select Surveys or Indicators from the left panel to review the respective selections. Clears all selections and takes you back to the home page to start a new data query. Takes you back to the previous tab Takes you forward to the next tab 16

Note the following options located on the bottom menu bar: Languages Help Allows you to change the default language displayed in the application Displays a collapsible Help window with user tips for the window currently being displayed (Fig. 1.8). Fig Help window When you are finished with your survey, indicator and subgroup selections, click the Data tab to generate a query based on your selections and view the data. Data Clicking the Data tab generates a query based on your selections and allows you to view the data in the form of customizable tables, graphs and maps. Details on how to view data in 17

and customize tables, graphs and maps are covered in Chapter 2, Tables, Graphs and Maps. 18
