DOIs for Scientists Kirsten Sachs Bibliothek & Dokumentation, DESY What is a DOI and why you should use it Organization: dx.doi, CrossRef, DataCite, How do you get a DOI? Metadata for DOI Examples Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 1
Why DOI? resolves to Users Article Search engine, Database, A journal may move to another publisher the server changes or is re-organized change of URL Thousands of links, bookmarks, database entries to be changed Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 2
Why DOI? resolves to Users DOI Article Search engine, Database, A journal may move to another publisher the server changes or is re-organized change of URL Update one lookup table: DOI (Digital Object Identifier) Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 3
What is a DOI? Syntax: prefix/suffix prefix: 10.code code is assigned to a publisher code can be subdivided, i.e. sub-elements added, separated by suffix: assigned by publisher in principle no limit in length, any printable character (UNICODE) some special characters must/should be encoded unique and persistent case insensitive perfect to refer to an article/object No rule by IDF whether the DOI should change when the content changes. It should be possible to identify an entity whenever it needs to be distinguished Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 4
The Organisation IDF - International DOI Foundation ( Foundation started to develop system in First applications launched Currently used by well over 5,000 naming authorities. Handbook: ( Registration Agencies: IDF CrossRef DataCite Airiti, Inc. EIDR medra R.R.Bowker Commercial publishers 24 Members: TIB DESY, CERN, ETH Zurich Korea Inst. of Science and Technol. Inform. Microsoft Research Publications Office of the EU China National Knowledge Infrastructure Inst. of Scient. and Tech. Inform. of China Japan Link Center Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 5
CrossRef Scholarly and professional research content. Journal articles, books, conference proceedings, etc. The world's leading scholarly publishers joined to form the non-profit, independent organization, Publishers International Linking Association, Inc. (PILA), which was incorporated in January CrossRef went live as the first collaborative reference linking service in June It built on the DOI-X project led by the IDF, AAP and CNRI. CrossRef is a collaborative reference linking service that functions as a sort of digital switchboard. It holds no full text content, but rather effects linkages through CrossRef Digital Object Identifiers (CrossRef DOI), which are tagged to article metadata supplied by the participating publishers. Publishers pay a fee based on their publishing revenue Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 6
DataCite DataCite is focused on improving the scholarly infrastructure around datasets. DataCite was founded in London on 1 Dec Technische Informations Bibliothek (TIB) is currently managing agent and also Member Institute. They provide registration service for primary data and grey literature. TIB was the first DOI registration agency for primary research data worldwide. TIB covers the registration fee for German academic institutions. Small fee otherwise 150 /year /DOI Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 7
Where do I get a DOI? The publisher is responsible for making the object and URL available and maintain the URL DOI relation if the URL changes. A single person can not ask for registration of a DOI for his article. You need a publisher (articles) or research data repository. You can ask a member of DataCite for suitable publishers, databases: DataBib initiative ( REgistry of REsearch data REpositories If you are hosting a database and can guaranty persistence (~10 years): get in contact with a member of DataCite and become your own registration organization. If you want to go through the hassle: become a DataCite member Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 8
How do I get a DOI? Via DataCite Register your institution/agency with a DataCite member ( Registration of DOI via DataCite Metadata Store ( either web upload or xml + script. DESY registers via TIB. DESY is currently using the service mainly for literature: - preprints not submitted to arxiv.org or to a journal - proceedings published at DESY Plans to register DOIs for research data in Photon Science No registration of DOI without metadata Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 9
Metadata for DOI CrossRef has highly structured metadata for publications Until recently not enforced quality varies DataCite Metadata Schema Current version 2.2 July 2011, version 3.0 is open for testing. Mandatory: Identifier (DOI), Creator, Title, Publisher, Year of publication Optional: Subject, ResourceType, Language, RelatedIdentifier, Version, Rights,... Provided by author or publisher, registered together with DOI Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 10
Example at DESY Proceedings published at the Verlag Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DOIs point to contributions in INDICO Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 11
Example INSPIRE DOI for data Data = Plots, Tables get DOI INSPIRE as repository Project with HEPData Durham database How to cite and count citations? Cite always together with paper? Count for paper (though only once) even if paper itself is not cited? Future project: DOIs for lattice field theory Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 12
Services Resolve: There are resolver: Google Chrome DOI resolver, Mendeley, or just add Search via metadata: How to cite? over 100 different formats Kirsten Sachs / DOIs for Scientists 13
Summary International DOI Foundation (IDF) Registration Agencies: CrossRef, DataCite, Members: TIB, Host: DESY Publisher registers the DOI for you publish For Data or small publisher, get in contact with a member of DataCite prefix/suffix: /some_nice_article unique, persistent Host guaranties availability of source Please use it!
