3 Introduction ebox-wbt is a Thin Client designed for use as a local workstation in Microsoft Windows terminal server environments. Current user guide applies for ebox-wbt2 software version. Most of the guide is applicable for ebox-wbt version also. The ebox-wbt connects through a local area network (LAN) to a terminal server running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Microsoft Windows 2000 Application Server, Windows 2003 Server and Windows XP Terminal Server. At lower resolutions also the true-color setting is possible. ebox-wbt is powered by an external, agency approved power supply and the total power consumption is under 12 watts. Page 4 of 24

5 ebox-wbt Software ebox-wbt was designed using the Microsoft WinCE.Net 4.2 operating system, customized to the ebox hardware and operational requirements. The complete software image resides in 32 MB of on-board flash disk. The functions included in the ebox software are: Microsoft Terminal Server Client supporting RDP 5.1 (enables audio and local devices forwarding from/to server) Microsoft Internet Explore V6.0 for WinCE.NET 4.2 Windows-Based Terminal Shell for managing connections (enables multiple simultaneous connections and switching between them) Setup utilities (Control panels, flash programmer etc.) WinCE.Net base components and drivers MSTI Boot Loader Upon powering on the MSTI Boot Loader initializes the minimal required hardware, executes the CE loader and starts Windows CE. The MSTI Boot Loader is able to boot CE from on-board Flash Disk, or even boot from Diskless Remote Boot in Linux (DRBL) by build-in PXE (Pre-Execution Environment) boot agent this way creative users can build a very custom ebox device, which can do more than just be a dumb terminal. When Windows CE.Net is running, it automatically connects to the network and tries to get an IP-address using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). If a DHCP server is not available on the network, ebox can be configured to use a fixed IP address and associated network settings. These are supplied by the user and configured via the ebox setup utility along with other environment setup. Page 5 of 24

6 Additional ebox Benefits The very fast boot-up time from power-on to logon screen makes it ideal for people who do not like waiting. ebox is housed in full plastic case. Adding the blue luminescence LED and industrial flip switch pushes it from Terminal Clients category to being a Fashion Statement. Optimal Cost ebox is lower price of the typical desktop computer capable of running the same applications locally. Low Maintenance - No configuration and tweaking typical to normal desktop Operating Systems. ebox comes with all necessary software installed. All of the modifications to user software are done from application server side. No hardware maintenance because there are no moving parts. Optimal software licensing - the shared software licensing policy allows dynamic usage of existing licenses as needed. For most software products that means one needs only as many licenses as the anticipated number of simultaneous users, rather than licenses for all possible users. Conserves space - ebox takes up as much space on a desk as a coffee mug. Its rugged plastic housing with rubber bumpers makes it tolerant to almost any environment. Silent - There is no any other moving elements inside ebox. Not even a Hard Disk. Mobile - Once again, all applications are running on a server. If server access is available, a user will have a normal desktop experience regardless of where the user has logged on. Page 6 of 24

7 ebox-wbt Setup First-Time Setup Wizard First time, when the ebox is powered up and there are no settings stored in Flash disk yet, the WBT Setup Wizard appears. Using this wizard, you can set some initial required settings like device name, network address and display resolution. HINT: for fast first-time setup you can just press Enter for few times until the WBT Setup Wizard completes. Pressing Enter on the keyboard accepts current configuration form settings and advances to next configuration page. By default the DHCP network settings are used, so specific network configuration is not necessary when the DHCP server is present in the local network. Page 7 of 24

8 Here is the wizard s form for entering the Terminal Name and Network Properties. By clicking the Network Properties button, another full-screen window with one defined network connection appears. The defined connection s name is PCI-RTL81391 and you can see the parameters by right-clicking on its icon and selecting Properties. If there is no defined connection like this, there is something wrong with on-board network controller chip. In appearing PCI-RTL81391 Settings form you can set the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server and WINS server settings. Also an option is presented for obtaining these settings from the DHCP server in local network. By default the DHCP option is chosen i.e. the addresses are acquired automatically from DHCP server and user does not need to enter those settings at all. Click the OK button at top-right corner of the properties form to accept the new settings. Then click on X at top-right of the full-screen network connections window for closing it. Click the Next button to advance to WBT Setup Wizard s display properties page. Page 8 of 24

9 Next here comes the panel for configuring the local printer. If no USB printer is connected, this Printers setup is of no use, because although there is offered a parallel port for connecting the printer, on most ebox s this port is not physically available and thus it s unusable. Some special ebox can have a normal LPT port for printer connection. In this case choose the desired printer from printers list and set the port to LPT1. Page 9 of 24

10 Finally press the Finish button in order to save the just-entered settings to the nonvolatile flash memory. Wait a few seconds for letting the flash programming to finish. After restart the Terminal Connection Manager is displayed and from there you can define and initiate several RDP terminal server connections. Page 10 of 24

12 Connection Manager Defining RDP Connection Click on the Configure tab to add or delete or edit the connections. Here you can also select the default connection and also set if some of the connections is automatically started during the ebox startup. Page 12 of 24

13 When you press the Add button, a New Connection creation dialog appears. From here you can select the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client and press OK. Page 13 of 24

14 If Microsoft Remote Desktop Client was selected, then now you can enter the properties for this connection. First enter the desired name for this connection and then also the server s name or IP-address. Usually even a short server name like w2kserver works, if the server is known in local network as Windows 2003 server.somedomain.com for example. Page 14 of 24

15 Next you can choose if the Automatic Logon is performed. If this feature is enabled and Username, Password and Domain defined, then upon connection startup the server does not ask any more for password, but the logon procedure is done automatically. In ebox-wbt version of software this feature is disabled for security reasons and thus users must authenticate themselves every time when connecting to server. The user can enter the values for Username and Domain fields in order to facilitate the logon process. Then upon connecting to server, only password needs to be entered. Page 15 of 24

16 Next you can choose if normal server desktop is displayed after logon or if a certain application is launched right away after logon. If application launching is enabled, you can also define the working directory. Page 16 of 24

17 If all needed connection properties are entered, and then press the Finish button to save the changes into non-volatile flash disk. Please wait few seconds for flash programming and then the just-defined connection will appear in the list of connections. Page 17 of 24

18 Here you can see one defined RDP connection. As mentioned before, by pressing the Startup button you can select if the selected connection in the list will be the default one or if it will be automatically started at terminal startup. Page 18 of 24

20 Setting Terminal Common Properties While the Connection Manager is visible and you press the F2 key, then the Terminal Properties window appears. This will allow for setting the different hardware and environment properties and settings for ebox. On first screen you can change the Terminal Name. Page 20 of 24

21 At Display tab you can enable the Screen Saver and set it s delay. The last tab in Terminal Properties is the familiar Control Panel, from where you can set the network settings, sound volume and input device settings. The Date/Time settings are not relevant, because they are always set to some fixed date as the ebox does not have the battery-retained Real-Time Clock. Page 21 of 24

22 Keyboard Shortcuts during RDP Connection Here are given some useful keyboard shortcuts that are applicable when the RDP connections are active: Press Ctrl+Alt+End while the connection is active to return to the Connection Manager. With multiple sessions active, you can toggle between sessions. To toggle between sessions: Press Ctrl+Alt + up-arrow to proceed to the previous session. Press Ctrl+Alt + down-arrow to proceed to the next session. Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Esc and Alt+Tab shortcuts are passed to the server and behave as usual for running Task Manager, showing Start Menu and switching tasks respectively. Page 22 of 24

23 Warranty TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1. Warranty The warranty terms for ebox-wbt are 13 months beginning on the date of invoice. During the warranty, MSTI will repair replace the product covered under this limited warranty. 2. Service and Support MSTI provides the technical support for software and hardware problems with your system throughout the warranty period. The technical support service is limited to configuration and operation of ebox-wbt sold by Media Stream Tech. The technical support service does not offer software tutoring or training. 3. Return Merchandise Authorization(RMA)policy If the MSTI technical support staff determines that a part is defective. Purchaser must call our technical support service to obtain an RMA number before attempting to return any part. To obtain an RMA number, Purchaser must follow procedures as below: 1. Complete the Media Stream Tech. standard RMA Form and fax/ back to the RMA Department. 2. The RMA number must be used within 7 days. 3. The RMA number must be shown clearly on your shipping label. 4. Media Stream Tech. must receive all returns before a replacement will be sent. 5. The repair cost is depends on the parts, the damage reasons, and whether under warranty 6. Period etc. The Seller will charge the purchaser in a reasonable price. 7. A copy of the invoice for the RMA product(s) will also be shipped to purchaser. 8. The freight of return to Media Stream Tech. is charges to purchaser account and accompanied by an RMA number. Any Returns with freight collect will be refused and returned to you. After Repairing, the cost of freight will be paid by Seller. Page 23 of 24

24 9. Media Stream Tech. must receive all returned goods within the warranty period. 4. Shipping Policy The purchaser must pre-pay shipping for any defective system or parts returned under the warranty. Media Stream Tech shall not be liable for risk of loss or damage during shipment of your returned system or parts if you fail to insure the shipment. All products must be shipped back to Media Stream Tech. in original or equivalent packaging. Media Stream Tech. will ship the repaired or replacement product(s) to Purchaser by freight prepaid. Purchaser assumes the risk of loss. Media Stream Tech. shall not be responsible for failure of the delivery service to make on-time delivery.
