Launch AOEMI Backupper Locate the AOEMI Icon on Desktop, Taskbar or in Start Menu and launch the way you would any program. This UAC dialog will pop up and you need to click Yes This is the startup screen for AOEMI AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 4
Create Bootable Media The first thing you should do is to create a bootable media. This will be used in case you cannot start Windows. Beginning with Windows 8 and carrying into Windows 10, Microsoft has decreed that vendor computers with the Microsoft Windows sticker have a new interface called UEFI defining the interaction of the operating system with the hard drive. See this article to determine which type you have. Previously, Windows used the BIOS interface, we will call the older format MBR/BIOS and the newer one UEFI/GPT. As you proceed you will need to know your disk type. To begin, Click on Utilities Then click on Create Bootable Media AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 5
Create Bootable Media Here there are two choices Linux or Windows PE. As you will see later the Linux is a bare bones bootable media, whereas the Windows PE provides more functionality. For a limited functionality, Click on Linux Regardless of your disk formatting (MBR/BIOS or UEFI/GPT), you will next be taken to the select bootable media window. For more functionality, Click on Windows PE The next screen that appears depends on your disk formatting (MBR/BIOS or UEFI/GPT): UEFI/GPT MBR/BIOS AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 6
Create Bootable Media This screen appears for MBR/BIOS formatted disks. Click Next You will next be taken to the select bootable media window. This screen appears for MBR/BIOS formatted disks. Click Next AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 7
Create Bootable Media Now you can select a bootable media. You can use a CD, USB or ISO file to create your bootable media. Here select your choice for bootable media Then click Next Here you must click Yes You will be shown a progress screen AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 8
Create Bootable Media When the process completes click Finish Now regardless of your disk format you will have either this picture or the next Linux Boot Minimum functionality (notice that you can not make a backup) Size about 45Mb AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 9
Create Bootable Media Windows PE boot Most functionality (notice that you CAN make a backup) Size about 305Mb Finally you need to verify that you boot your computer to the bootable media. This is different on all computers, sometimes even among ones from the same vendor. Booting a MBR/BIOS computer to a USB drive is a matter of finding the key or combination of keys required while the computer is booting to bring up the Boot Menu. See. Booting a UEFI/GPT computer is a bit trickier. See AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 10
Create a Full Backup At the beginning of each backup cycle (recommend monthly) you create a full backup described in this section. First start AOEMI Backupper. Deal with the UAC dialog. Click Create New Backup Click System Backup First provide a name for the backup Backupper will create this backup in a folder with this name and store the backup files in that folder Provide the location for this backup on your external hard drive. Click Start Backup AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 11
Create Full Backup Wait patiently while the backup runs You have some options here that can be handy When done, Click Finish AOEMI will close the above window and display the window as show at the beginning of the next section. In File Explore you can see the file bearing the name provided for backup in the folder of the same name. AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 12
Create Incremental Backup Backups made after the first one are incremental to save the changes since the first backup. This approach results in smaller backups while providing the means to restore your computer its state at the time the backup is made. Start AOEMI You would start a new full backup by clicking New Backup On current backup click Backup Here you see three choices. Recommend you pick either Incremental or Differential. Incremental saves changes from Full and any succeeding incremental backups Differential always calculates the changes from the full backup Click on your choice. Here you can make notes about the backup Then click Start Backup AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 13
Create Incremental Backup Wait patiently while backup runs You have some options here that can be handy When completed click Finish In File Explore you can see the additional file with a 1 appended to the Task Name that is much smaller than the full backup AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 14
Restore from Backup While it may never happen, you may someday need to restore your computer. This section demonstrates how to do that. If your computer will not boot to windows you will have to use your bootable media to restore your computer. During this process you may feel uncomfortable as there are several notices/warnings that may intimidate you. Hopefully showing you how to deal will them will equip you to restore your computer. You must decide the date of the backup that want to use to restore your computer. In the backup that you have decided to use click Restore This is one of those warnings so expect it. Click yes In the selected backup task click on the backup date that you want to use to restore your computer. Click Next AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 15
Restore from Backup Here you have the option of selecting when to place each partition of the backup on your hard drive. You will not be using this very often. Click Start Restore A message appears saying the computer will restart. Select your boot mode Click Yes Wait patiently. From this point on, no action is required on your part until the computer reboots into Windows. AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 16
Restore from Backup Eventually your computer will restart Here you will see AOEMI loading itself Now AOEMI will start AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 17
Restore from Backup AOEMI will automatically begin the recovery process You will see this message You do NOT have to do anything once you select the boot mode 2 pages ago. Now your computer will reboot to the same condition it was when you made the backup that you selected to use for the restore operation. AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 18
Mount an Image Mounting an image allows you to copy file(s) and/or folder(s) from a read only virtual drive that has all the files on your computer in their state at the time of the selected backup to any place on your computer. Start AOEMI Click Utilities Click Explore Image Here you must choose the Backup Task. Click on your choice Click Next AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 19
Mount an Image Here you pick the date of the backup you wish to mount and explore Here I have selected the second backup as there is a file there I want to put on my system drive Click Next Here you choose the partition(s) you want You can change the letter assigned to the drive that will host your drive Click Next Rather quickly your drive will be set up Click Finish AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 20
Mount an Image On This PC Locate the Drive (by the letter) Drill down to find the document Right Click on document Click Send to Click destination File explorer will copy document to your computer, where you can edit it. Remove the virtual drive In AOEMI click Utilities and then Explore Image Put a check mark in mounted partition Click Detach In File Explorer the document is where you placed it Note there is NO drive P AOEMI Backup Upper V4.0 February 21, 2017 Page - 21
