7 Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Congratulations on purchasing your USB to Serial Converter. This User s Guide is written to provide an easy-to-read yet thorough reference for using and installing USB to Serial Converter. Before installing device drivers, browse the CD to familiarize yourself with its contents. General Layout Before continuing, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with your new USB to Serial Converter. 8 Chapter 2 BEFORE YOU GET STARTED Unpacking the USB to Serial Converter Open the product s package and inspect the contents. If any of the items listed below are damaged or missing, please contact your dealer: 1. Your USB to Serial Converter (180cm/6 ) 2. Driver CD-ROM Disk 3. This User s Guide (found on CD) Other Items Needed In addition to the contents of the package, you may need one or more of the following: 1. Your computer s documentation 2. Your operating system s documentation 3. The documentation of the peripheral that will be connected to your USB to Serial Converter Safety Recommendations When installing your USB to Serial Converter, do the following to avoid possible electric shock and damage to your system: 1. Turn off all power to your computer. 2. Unplug all cables connected to your computer, including the power cord. 3. Ground yourself by touching a metallic object before handling the device and before installing the device. 2

9 Serial Number Locate the product s serial number (usually on the back of the device), and record the number below. If the product does not have its original serial number attached, your warranty may be voided. Serial Number (S/N): System Requirements A PC with a minimum of a 75MHz Pentium, or equivalent A minimum of 16M bytes of RAM One available USB type A downstream port. (UHCI or OHCI compliant with USB1.1) Windows 98/2000/Me/XP or Mac OS (8.2 and higher) Driver Support Your USB to Serial Converter comes with a comprehensive Driver CD-ROM Disk which supports the following popular systems: Windows 98/2000/Me/XP Mac OS (8.2 and higher) For additional driver information, consult the appropriate directory for your operating system on your Driver CD-ROM Disk. NOTE: Driver information is subject to change. Check with your dealer for updated driver information. 3

10 Chapter 3 HARDWARE INSTALLATION Because the design of computer cases varies greatly, only general installation instructions are given. Please refer to your computer s reference manual whenever in doubt. Configuration Because your USB to Serial Converter is Plug & Play ready, you need not worry about setting I/O addresses and IRQs. All this will be handled for you automatically through Plug & Play functionality. USB to Serial Converter Installation Follow the directions below to install your new converter: 1. Power on your computer and make sure that your computer s USB port is enabled and working properly. 2. Before installing your USB to Serial Converter, you should ground yourself by briefly touching an unpainted piece of metal. 3. Connect the USB connector of the USB to Serial (RS232) Converter to the USB port of your PC. 4. Windows will automatically detect the USB to Serial device and please refer to Chapter 4 "Software Installation" to setup the driver. 5. After the USB to Serial Converter is connected to your PC through a USB port and the driver is properly installed, connect the serial device you wish to add to your PC with the serial connector of the USB to Serial Converter. 6. Windows will automatically detect the new serial device. Please refer to your serial device s installation manual for proper installation. 4

11 Chapter 4 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION This chapter presents general software installation instructions for the following popular operating systems: Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP. Your USB to Serial Converter automatically configures with Windows Plug & Play functionality. This means that once you plug the device into a computer, Windows will automatically detect the device and launch an installation wizard. The appropriate driver is located at the following path on your Driver CD-ROM Disk: D:\USB\9103 NOTE: Before installing any software please insure that all hardware is properly plugged in according to the Hardware Installation section in Chapter 3. Windows 98 Driver Installation Guide Follow the instructions below to install your USB to Serial Converter driver under Windows When you are sure that your USB to Serial Converter is properly installed, start Windows. 2. After Windows starts up, it will automatically detect your newly installed USB to Serial Converter and launch an Add New Hardware Wizard. (If your system fails to detect your USB to Serial Converter, click your Windows Start button, select Settings, then click on Control Panel. A Control Panel window will appear. Double click the Add New Hardware icon). 5

12 3. The Windows 98 installation wizard will ask you what you want it to do. Select Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommended) and click Next. 4. At the next screen, insert your USB to Serial Converter Driver CD-ROM Disk. Then click the Browse button. 5. A Browse for Folder window will appear. Double click your designated CD-ROM drive letter (usually drive D:). Search the directories for D:\USB\9103 and then click OK. This will return you to the screen displayed above. Click Next to continue. 6

13 6. Windows will notify you that it will search for your device. Click Next. 7. You will be notified that the initial installation process has been completed. Click Finish. Windows will install the drivers for your device automatically and take you to your Windows Start Screen. 8. After installing any new hardware, it s always a good idea to restart your computer. 9. To test that your device was installed properly, click on your Windows Start button. Click Settings and then click the Control Panel. 10. A Control Panel window will open. Double click the System icon. 7

14 11. A System Properties window will appear. From the Device Manager tab, find the USB Serial Bus controllers icon and double click it. 12. Underneath USB Serial Bus controllers your newly installed USB to Serial Converter will be listed. Double click the icon. 13. A Properties window will appear. Under Device Status it should read, This device is working properly. 14. To check each individual port on the device, from the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window, go to Ports (COM & LPT) and double click the listing. A listing of COM and LPT ports will appear. Double click the appropriate port and a properties window will appear. Under Device status it should read, This device is working properly. 8

15 Uninstalling Drivers in Windows 98 Follow the instructions below to uninstall your USB to Serial Converter in Windows Click your Windows Start button. Go to Settings and then Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel window, double click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3. Select USB to Serial RS232 Converter Drivers and then click the Add/Remove button. 4. A Confirm window will appear. Click Yes to remove the USB to Serial Converter driver. Windows will ask you if you want to restart your computer. Click Yes to restart. 9

16 Windows 2000 Driver Installation Guide Follow the instructions below to install your USB to Serial Converter driver under Windows When you are sure that your USB to Serial Converter is properly installed, start Windows. 2. After Windows starts up, it will automatically detect your newly installed USB to Serial Converter and launch a Found New Hardware Wizard. Click Next. (If your system fails to detect your USB to Serial Converter, click your Windows Start button, select Settings, then click on Control Panel. A Control Panel window will appear. Double click the Add/Remove New Hardware icon). 3. The Windows 2000 the installation wizard will ask you what you want it to do. Select Search for the best driver for your device. (recommended) and then click Next. 10

17 4. At the next screen, select Specify a location and click the Next button. 5. Insert your USB to Serial Converter Driver CD-ROM Disk. Then click the Browse button. 6. A Browse for Folder window will appear. Double click your designated CD-ROM drive letter (usually drive D:). Search the directories for D:\USB\9103 and then click OK. This will return you to the screen displayed above. Click OK to continue. 7. Windows 2000 will find the drivers for the USB to Serial Converter (D:\USB\9103). Click the Next button to continue the installation process. 11

18 8. The Found New Hardware Wizard will appear. Click the Finish button to complete installation. 9. A new Found New Hardware Wizard will start. Follow the steps 1-7 above to install the serial port driver of the converter. After you have finished installing the second Hardware Wizard, it s would be a good idea to restart your computer. 10. To test that your device was installed properly, click on your Windows Start button. Click Settings and then click the Control Panel. 11. A Control Panel window will open. Double click the System icon. 12. A System Properties window will appear. From the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. The following screen will appear. 12

19 13. Underneath Universal Serial Bus controllers, your newly installed USB to Serial Converter will be listed. Double click the icon. 14. A Properties window will appear. Under Device status it should read, This device is working properly. Uninstalling Drivers in Windows 2000 Follow the instructions below to uninstall your USB to Serial Converter in Windows Click your Windows Start button. Go to Settings and then Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel window, double click the Add/Remove Hardware icon. The following screen will appear. 3. Click on the USB to Serial Converter Drivers and then click the corresponding Change/Remove button. 4. Windows will display the following screen. Make sure your USB to Serial Converter is unplugged and then click Continue to finish the uninstall process. 13

20 Windows Me Driver Installation Guide Follow the instructions below to install your USB to Serial Converter driver under Windows Me. 1. When you are sure that your USB to Serial Converter is properly installed, start Windows. 2. After Windows starts up, it will automatically detect your newly installed USB to Serial Converter and launch an Add New Hardware Wizard. (If your system fails to detect your USB to Serial Converter, click your Windows Start button, select Settings, then click on Control Panel. A Control Panel window will appear. Double click the Add New Hardware icon). 3. Windows Me will find your USB to Serial Converter. Select Specify the location of the driver (Advanced) and then click Next. 4. At the next screen, insert your USB to Serial Converter Driver CD-ROM Disk. Then click the Browse button. 14

21 5. A Browse for Folder window will appear. Double click your designated CD-ROM drive letter (usually drive D:). Search the directories for D:\USB\9103 and then click OK. This will return you to the previous screen. Click Next to continue. 6. Windows will notify you that it will search for your device. Click Next. 7. Then you will be notified that the installation process has been completed. Click Finish. 8. After installing new hardware, it s always a good idea to restart your computer. 9. To test that your device was installed properly, click on your Windows Start button. Click Settings and then click the Control Panel. 10. A Control Panel window will open. Double click the System icon. 15

22 11. A System Properties window will appear. From the Device Manager tab, find the Universal Serial Bus controllers listing and double click it. 12. Underneath Universal Serial Bus controllers, your newly installed USB to Serial Converter will be listed. Double click the listing. 13. A Properties window will appear. Under Device status it should read, This device is working properly. 14. To check the individual port on the device, from the Device Manager tab in the System Properties window, go to Ports (COM & LPT) and double click the listing. A listing of COM and LPT ports will appear. Double click the appropriate port and a Properties window will appear. Under Device status it should read, This device is working properly. 16

23 Uninstalling Drivers in Windows Me Follow the instructions below to uninstall your USB to Serial Converter in Windows Me. 1. Click your Windows Start button. Go to Settings and then Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel window, double click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3. An Add/Remove Programs Properties window will appear. Select USB to Serial Converter Drivers and then click the Add/Remove button. 4. A Confirm window will appear. Click Yes to remove the USB to Serial Converter driver. 5. After removing drivers, it s always a good idea to restart your computer. 17

24 Windows XP Driver Installation Guide To install your USB to Serial Converter under Windows XP, follow the instructions below. 1. When you are sure that your USB to Serial Converter is properly installed, start Windows XP. 2. After Windows starts up, it will automatically detect your newly installed USB to Serial Converter and launch a Found New Hardware Wizard. Please select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and then click Next. (If your system fails to detect your USB to Serial Converter, click your Windows Start button, select Settings, then click on Control Panel. A Control Panel window will appear. Double click on Add Hardware ). 3. Insert the CD-ROM driver, and where Windows is looking for the driver location, type in D:\USB\9103 (where D: is the letter of your CD-ROM drive). 18

25 4. During installation please ignore the digital signature message from Microsoft shown by simply clicking Continue Anyway and this will allow the installation process to continue. 5. Please wait while the wizard installs the software. 6. The Found New Hardware Wizard will reappear. Click the Finish button to complete installation. 7. A new Found New Hardware Wizard will start. Follow the steps 1-6 above to install the serial port driver of the converter. After you have finished installing the second Hardware Wizard, it s would be a good idea to restart your computer. 8. To test that your device was installed properly, click on your Windows Start button. Click Settings and then click the Control Panel. 19

26 9. A Control Panel window will open. Double click the System icon. 10. A System Properties window will appear. From the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button. 11. Underneath Universal Serial Bus controllers, your newly installed USB to Serial Converter will be listed. Double click the listing. 12. A Properties window will appear. Under Device status it should read, This device is working properly. 13. To check the individual port on the device, go to Ports (COM & LPT) and double click. A listing of COM and LPT ports will appear. Double click the appropriate port and a Properties window will appear. Under Device status it should read, This device is working properly. 20

27 Uninstalling Drivers in Windows XP Follow the instructions below to uninstall your USB to Serial Converter in Windows XP. 1. Click your Windows Start button. Go to Settings and then Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel window, double click the System icon. 3. A System Properties window will appear. Click Hardware Tab and then click Device Manager. 4. A Device Manager window will appear. Click Universal Serial Bus controllers. Underneath Universal Serial Bus controllers, your newly installed USB to Serial will be listed. 5. To uninstall the drivers for your USB to Serial Converter, right click on the icon and select uninstall. This will allow you to uninstall your USB to Serial Converter. 6. After removing drivers, it s always a good idea to restart your computer. 21

28 Chapter 5 CONNECTING PERIPHERAL DEVICES Your USB to Serial Converter is equipped with one USB and Serial port that can connect to a wide array of peripheral devices. Your USB to Serial Converter has a serial port, which can be connected to many different types of peripherals. Here are a few examples: Modems Digitizers Bar code readers ISDN devices PDA devices 22

29 Chapter 6 TROUBLESHOOTING General Troubleshooting In the event that you have any difficulties installing your USB to Serial Converter, check the following items: 1. Confirm that the connector between your PC and the USB to Serial Converter is secure. 2. Confirm that the connector between your peripheral device and the USB to Serial Converter is secure. 3. Make sure both of your USB to Serial Converter and peripheral device drivers is properly installed. 4. Make sure you have restarted your computer each time new drivers have been installed onto your system or when your system resources have been modified. 5. Make sure your attached peripheral device is powered on. 6. If you are still experiencing difficulties, the next step is to contact your dealer. 23
