How I can create a wireless connection with my ERS-7 AIBO? If you are having problems creating a wireless connection to your AIBO, AIBO- Clinic recommends to try creating a direct connection between your AIBO and your computer to make sure that the wireless lan function is working. This is called an adhoc connection. The step by step procedure below is for Windows XP operating systems only. Preparing your computer 1. Check that you have administrator rights : - Click Start - Click Control Panel - Click User Accounts - Check whether Computer Administrator is written under your account name. If your account does not have Administrator rights, please log off your current account and then logon to an account with Administrator rights. If you do not know the password for that account please contact the computer or network Administrator. 2. Disable all firewall, antivirus and proxy software. Firewall, antivirus or proxy software (such as Symantec s Norton Internet Security) can prevent your AIBO from communicating with your computer.. You need to temporarily disable these applications while connecting to your AIBO or configure these applications to allow your AIBO to connect to your computer (please check the help files of these applications. AIBO-Clinic does not provide support for third party applications). 3. Install Universal Plug and Play on your computer. Universal Plug and Play (UpnP) is a Windows XP service for easily discovering devices, including non-computers devices such as your AIBO, on a network. - Click Start - Click Control Panel - Click Add or remove programs - Click Add/Remove Windows Components on the left hand side of the window - Select Networking Services from the list of windows components - Click Details - Check the box next to Universal Plug and Play
- Click OK. If asked, insert the windows XP CD into the optical drive of your computer. - Click Next. Windows will install Universal Plug and Play on your computer. - Click Finish to close the Windows components wizard. 4. Give your computer a fixed IP address - Click Start - Click Control Panel - Click the Network and Internet connections (this step is not needed when using the classic view) - Click the Network connections icon - Right-click the Wireless Network Connection and click Properties - On the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) under This connection uses the following items and click Properties - Select Use the following IP address - Enter the following IP address and subnet mask IP address Subnet mask
- Leave the Default gateway field blank and click OK. - Click on the Advanced tab in the network connection properties windows - Make sure that the box Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet is unchecked. - Click OK 5. Add an AD-HOC Connection - Click on the Wireless Networks tab
- At the bottom of the windows click on Advanced - Select Computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) networks only - Click Close - Under Preferred networks, click Add - Enter AIBONET as the Network Name and leave the boxes Data encryption (WEP Enabled) and Network Authentication (Shared mode) unchecked.
If you are using a centrino based system you need to select open for network authentification and disable for data encryption. The network name does not neccessarily have to be AIBONET. It can be any name you wish as long as it is the same on the AIBO.
- Click OK twice to exit the wireless network connection properties. - Right-click the wireless Lan Connection icon - Click on view available wireless networks - Select AIBONET - Click on connect at the bottom of the window Preparing your AIBO You first need to install the AIBO Wireless lan manager software on your computer. Insert the CDROM that came with your AIBO into the optical drive on your computer and follow the onscreen instructions A Memorystick reader/writer is needed for entering the network settings on your AIBO s Memorystick. It is strongly recommended to use a SONY branded memorystick reader/writer as third party memorystick reader/writers can damage the AIBO MIND memorystick. - Remove the AIBO MIND Memory Stick from your AIBO and insert it into your Memory Stick reader/writer. - Double-click the AIBO WLAN Manager icon on your desktop. - Click the Advanced tab - Click the Browse button, and click the drive letter of your memorystick reader/writer. - Click OK
- Enter ERS-7 as the AIBO(Host) Name You can use a different name for the AIBO Name if you wish. It will not affect the wireless connection. - Select Use the following IP address - Enter the following Network settings : IP Address : Subnet Mask : Default Gateway : DNS Servers : Enter AIBONET as the SSID. You can use a different SSID or Network name as long as it s the same as the one you entered previously in the wireless network properties - Select Operation Mode as Auto - Leave the enable WEP encryption box unchecked - Check the box Enable SSDP. - Click Write to save these settings to the memorystick - Finally, click the easy tab and doublecheck that the AIBO(host) name, the SSID and the WEP encryption setting are the same as in the advanced tab. If not, make the appropriate changes and click write once more. Viewing pictures taken by your AIBO
- Remove the AIBO Mind memorystick from the memorystick reader/writer and put it back into your AIBO. - Set the wireless lan switch to on. The wireless lan switch is located underneath your AIBO next to the battery and memorystick slots. - Turn on your AIBO - Once your AIBO has finished starting up, click on the search tab in the AIBO WLAN Manager. - Click Search. The AIBO WLAN Manager will start searching for your AIBO. Once your AIBO has been found, an AIBO icon will appear. - Double-click the AIBO icon or click the link to your AIBO s IP address that appears below next to AIBO top page to open the AIBO MIND page. Alternatively, you can enter your AIBO s IP address ( ) directly into the address bar of your internet browser.
- Try viewing pictures taken by your AIBO In the AIBO photo album to check whether the wireless connection is working. Connecting to AIBO Entertainment Player (AEP) - When first starting AEP, you will get the AEP player network settings screen. - Select Manually set IP address - Enter below the IP address entered previously on your AIBO (in this case ) - Click OK.
If you accidentally closed this windows, you can still add this information by clicking on the tool icon that appears in the top left hand corner of the AEP screen, and then select the Network Settings tab. - Additionnally, if you Windows XP SP2 firewall is enabled, you will get a windows security alert window when connecting for the first time. - Select unblock when prompted
- Click Exit in the connecting to AIBO screen. This will close the AEP application. - Start the AEP application again to connect to your AIBO. If by accident, Keep blocking was selected the user needs to do the following : - Right click the wirless network connection in network connectiona and select properties. - Click advanced - Click Settings under the windows firewall section
- Click the exceptions tab
- Check the box next to VAIBOServer - Click OK twice - If you still cannot connect, return to the windows firewall settings window and turn the windows firewall off - For users that also have Norton Internet security, they will also be prompted to Permit the application. - Select Permit - Check the box Always use this action - Click OK If by accident block was selected, the user needs to do the following : - Double-click the Norton Internet Security icon in the taskbar (globe icon, pass the cursor over each icon and windows will tell you wich one it is). - Click on personal firewall - Click on configure
- Click on the programs tab - At the bottom of the windows is a list of programs. Scroll down the list to VAIBOServer and change the internet access to Permit all
- Click OK - If you still cannot connect, right-click the Norton Internet Security icon in the taskbar and choose disable
