Introduction What is the DX-Series LIU? The DX-Series LIU is a digital product with integrated digital signal processing (DSP) and IP connectivity. It is used in conjunction with a DX64 or DX-Altus system to provide eight 4-wire channels with E & M signaling that can interface to radio channels, telephone channels, or trunked-radio channels. The DX-Series LIU is an eight-port radio communications hub that is designed to provide cost-effective interoperability between transceivers from different manufacturers. It provides selective calling (selcall), DTMF encoding/decoding, and VOX control of audio. The DX-Series LIU is user configurable via its built-in web server. Getting More Information This quick start guide is only a brief overview of how to configure the DX-Series LIU and get it up and running quickly on your network. For further information on how to use the DX-Series LIU, refer to the DX-Series LIU Product Manual in PDF format on the product CD supplied with your DX64 or DX-Altus system. 4 Package Contents As shown in the figure below, your LIU package includes the following: LIU (Line Interface Unit) USB cable and power connectors (2) E & M Port cables (8) and Cat5e Network Cable Quick Start Guide LIU Line Interface Unit E & M Port Cables (8) Network Cable (Cat5E) USB Cable DC Power Connectors Quick Start Guide Port Cable Assembly The E & M Port cables are terminated with a US Modular (8P8C) connector at the LIU end. Using the assembly diagram below, you can terminate the other end to suit your radio equipment. 2 Quick Start Guide

Getting Started Configuring the LIU This guide will help you quickly get started with the LIU. It provides several methods to help you configure the network settings of your LIU. You can choose whichever method is most suitable for your system. It is recommended that you connect your LIU to a network router or switch on your network using the supplied network cable. Connect 12VDC to the unit via the Molex 2-way header or the DC power connector. Connect one end of the supplied network cable to the ETHERNET connector located on the front panel of the unit, and the other end to a spare port on your network router. Note When connecting the network cable from the DX-Series LIU to the network router, the Link indicator on the front panel will illuminate. If this indicator does not illuminate, you may have a problem with the cabling; and you will not be able to communicate with the DX-Series LIU until the problem is corrected. Connect one end of the TDM cable to the TDM connector located on the back panel of the unit, and the other end to the TDM Interface connector CN1 on the DX64 or DX-Altus rack. Note The TDM cable is supplied with your DX64 or DX-Altus system. You can configure the DX-Series LIU by logging in to its built-in web server using your web browser or by using the DX64CMU (Configuration and Maintenance Utility) software you can only use this software with a DX64 system. Both methods are convenient depending on your system and make it easy for you to configure all the settings in the LIU. DX-Series Line Interface Unit 3

Note DX-Altus Server will overwrite any changes you make to the configuration settings of LIU devices physically connected to the DX-Altus Server sub-rack(s). Therefore, if you want to make changes to the settings of LIU devices, you should use the DX-Altus Server configuration interface instead of the LIU built-in web server. However, in order to use the built-in web server, you ll need to determine its IP address so that you can type it in to your web browser. If you do not know the IP address, the section Determining the IP Address on page 6 describes how to do this; otherwise you can refer to section Configuring the Network Settings Using the Web Server on page 12. You can also use the MENU push-button/knob and LCD on the front panel to perform basic configuration of the LIU settings. Using this method, you do not need a computer or web browser. The first step in configuring your DX-Series LIU is to set its device address so it can communicate with the DX64 or DX-Altus system, as described in the section Setting the LIU Address below. Setting the LIU Address The LIU has a device address that is used to communicate with the DX64 or DX- Altus system. You can set the device address by following the procedure below. 14 Configuring the Network Settings Using the Web Server The LIU has a built-in web server that provides easy access to configuration settings via a Configuration Manager. You can use a web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, to configure the network settings. Before you can access the web server, however, you need to determine the IP address of the LIU as described in the section Determining the IP Address. If you already know the IP address, simply type it into your browser. To configure the network settings 1. Open your web browser, and in the URL address bar, type the IP address of your LIU unit (e.g. After several seconds, the web server Log In page appears. 2. Click on the Log In link. The username and password screen is displayed similar to the one below. 12 Quick Start Guide

3. Type in omni for the username and liu for the password. Once you have logged in, the System Status page is displayed. You can now access the web-based configuration interface to check the network settings (and other configuration settings), and to make any changes if necessary. Note The username and the password are both case sensitive. 4. Click on the Network menu to display the Network Configuration page. You will notice that, in this example, the Automatically obtain IP Address (using DHCP) option is selected by default as this setting was enabled in the section Using a DHCP Server. Hence, most of the settings on this page are greyed out or disabled, and cannot be changed. Note The network settings on this page have been automatically allocated by the DHCP server on the network. 5. (Optional) If you do not want to use DHCP, deselect the Automatically obtain IP Address (using DHCP) option, and then type the network settings for Static IP Address, Netmask, and Gateway Address that you want to use. 16 6. If you changed the network settings, click Save to save the configuration. 7. Click on the LIU menu to display the LIU Configuration page. 14 Quick Start Guide

8. In the Device Address box, type the address of the LIU. Note The Device Address is the address used by DX64 and DX- Altus systems to identify and communicate with a particular LIU in the system. In some cases, this may be preset at the factory using DIP switches onboard the LIU and cannot be changed using this page. If it is not factory preset and you only have one LIU, you should set this address to 1; otherwise you should set it to the next available address. 9. If you changed the LIU settings, click Save to save the configuration. 10. If you changed the network settings, click Restart to restart the LIU. Note Changes to the settings on the Network Configuration page are not applied immediately. Thus, you must restart the LIU for the changes to take effect. Changes to the settings on the other configuration pages are applied immediately and do not require a restart. Congratulations! Your DX-Series LIU is now set up and ready to use on your network. DX-Series Line Interface Unit 15

Resetting the LIU You may want to reset the LIU configuration to factory default settings especially if the LIU fails to start up properly due to a configuration error.
