7 1 Introduction This chapter provides an introduction to the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager Overview Welcome to Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager is an application that downloads software to managed Avaya devices. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager can also check the software versions currently in use against the latest versions available from Avaya and recommend updates when a newer version is available. You can use Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager to take a new release from Avaya s Web site and store it on your hard disk for subsequent downloading to the appropriate devices. 8 Chapter 1 Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager includes a server hosted on the workstation running HP NNM or Avaya MultiService Network Manager in Standalone Mode. The server stores all the software retrieved from the Web and can download the software to appropriate devices. Files containing embedded software can also be copied to the server. The server can be reached locally or via remote access. This provides the ability to update the software on your devices from anywhere in the world. Using Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager This chapter provides brief instructions on how to use Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager to retrieve software from the Web and download it to appropriate devices in your network. 1. Start Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. For instructions on starting Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager, refer to Starting Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager on page Discover the devices in the network. For instructions on discovering devices, refer to Discovering Devices from the Platform on page 17 and Adding Devices Manually on page Analyze the software on the network devices to determine if there are new versions. For instructions on analyzing device software, refer to Performing Web Analysis on page Retrieve new versions of software from the Web. For instructions on retrieving software from the Web, refer to Retrieving New Versions from the Web on page Download the new software to the relevant devices in your network. For instructions on downloading software to devices, refer to Downloading on page Reset the devices in the network as necessary. 9 Introduction Starting Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager This section describes how to start and close Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. The procedure depends on the system you are using. To start Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager from Avaya MultiService Console, select Tools > Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. The Device Table opens showing the Download View. To start Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager from HP-OV NNM (UNIX or NT-OV), select Tools > Avaya > Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. 10 Chapter 1 The User Interface The user interface consists of the following elements: Menu Bar - Menus for accessing Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager s functions. For a list of menu items, refer to Appendix A, Menus. Toolbar - Toolbar buttons for accessing Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager s main functions. The Device Table - A table listing discovered network devices. View Tabs - Tabs for switching between Download View and Analyzer View. Dialog Area - A window where all dialog boxes are displayed. When no dialog box is open, the Dialog Area disappears and the Device Table expands to take its place. Status Line - An area at the bottom of the window where tooltips and the communication status between Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager and network devices are displayed. Figure 1-1. 11 Introduction Toolbar The Toolbar provides shortcuts to the main Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager functions. The table below describes the buttons on the Toolbar and gives the equivalent menu options. Table 1-1. Toolbar Buttons Button Description Menu Item Displays the Network Discovery dialog box. Displays the Device Configuration dialog box. Initiates downloading to selected devices. Resets the selected modules. Actions > Discover Devices Actions > Configure Actions > Download Now Actions > Reset Activates the Analyzer and switches the Device Table to Analyzer View. Opens the Retrieve Image From the Web dialog box. Displays the Add Download file dialog box. Activates context-sensitive help. Tools > Image Analyzer Tools > Retrieve Image From the Web Tools > Add Image File Help > Help ON The Device Table The Device Table lists devices and displays information about them. 12 Chapter 1 View Tabs The Device Table has two viewing options: Download View - Used for discovering, configuring, and downloading software to devices. Analyzer View - Used for comparing current software versions against the newest versions on Avaya s web site. You can use the view tabs to select between these two view options. To switch to a different view, click the appropriate view tab. The selected view opens. Dialog Area The area to the right of the Device Table is where all dialog boxes open. This area can be resized by dragging the vertical splitter bar with the mouse. When a dialog box opens, it replaces the current dialog box in the Dialog Area. When no dialog box is open, the Dialog Area disappears and the Table View window expands to take its place. 6 Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide

13 Introduction Status Line The Status Line shows the communication status between the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager and the devices on the network by displaying a status message and an appropriate graphic. In addition, an icon appears in the Status Line when the Device Table is filtered. The table below shows the possible statuses with their corresponding graphics, and gives a short explanation for each status. Table 1-2. Communication Statuses Status Graphic Description Idle Discovering devices Downloading Filter Active Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager is ready and no downloads are currently in progress. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager is currently discovering devices (SNMP activity). Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager is downloading software to devices (TFTP activity). The filtering options are currently active. The Status Line also displays descriptive information when you hold the cursor over a toolbar button, menu item, or status icon. 14 Chapter 1 Using Tooltips Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager includes a tooltip feature which allows you to display additional information about devices and software versions. Tooltips are available in the following places: Table View - To display additional information about a device, place the cursor on the device s IP Address column. After about one second, a tooltip appears with information about the device. Retrieve Image From the Web Dialog Box - To display information about a new software version, place the cursor on the device type. After about one second, a tooltip appears with information about the latest version, including the version number and new features. Network Discovery Dialog Box, Manual Entry Tab - To display information about a device in the Device List, place the cursor on the device. After about one second, a tooltip appears with the device parameters, as defined in the Device Parameters section of the dialog box. These tooltips are available even if the tooltip feature is not activated. To toggle the tooltips feature, select View > ToolTip. 8 Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide

15 Introduction Using Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager Help This section explains how to use the on-line help in the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. The on-line help can be opened to the contents page or directly to a topic of interest. Opening the Help to the Contents Page To open the help to the contents page, select Help > Contents. The on-line help opens to the contents page. Opening the Help to a Topic of Interest To open the help directly to a topic of interest: 1. Click. Or Select Help > Help ON. The cursor changes to the shape of an arrow with a question mark. 2. Click on a point of interest in the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager. The help opens to a topic explaining the feature that was clicked. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide 9

16 2 The Device Table This chapter explains how to use the Device Table. The Device Table lists discovered devices and displays information about them. This chapter includes the following sections: Information Displayed in the Device Table - Explains the information displayed in the various columns of the Device Column. Device Table Views - Explains the different views of the Device Table. Sorting the Device Table - Explains how to sort the order of devices listed in the Device Table. Filtering the Device Table - Explains how to filter out devices in the Device Table. Printing the Device Table - Explains how to print the Device Table as a text file. Saving the Device Table - Explains how to save the Device Table as a text file. Information Displayed in the Device Table The Device Table displays the following information about each device: Name - Name of the device (from the platform). IP Address - IP address of the device. Module - The slot in which the module is located in the device. For stackable devices, this is the module s position in the stack. Device Type - The type of device. 17 The Device Table Software Type - The software entity to be downloaded to the device. Options are: Image - An executable file for running the device. Boot Loader - A low-level executable for starting up the device. Web Management - An executable file providing web management capability to the device. Status - Download View only. The status of communication between the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager and the device. Current Version - The software version currently running on the device or (for Avaya P330, M770, and M770ATM) the software version located in the active bank which will run after the next reboot. When a new version is downloaded to the device, this column is automatically updated. Last Release - Analyzer View only. The last version of the software available from Avaya s web site. This field is updated each time you run a web analysis. For more information on web analysis, refer to Chapter 5, Analyzing and Retrieving from the Web. Downloading Progress - Download View only. During a download, this column displays the percentage of the file which has been downloaded to the device. File Size - Download View only. During a download, this column displays the number of bytes that have been downloaded to the device. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide 11

18 Chapter 2 Device Table Views The Device Table has two view options: Download View - Used for discovering, configuring, and downloading software to devices. Analyzer View - Used for checking the software versions currently used by listed devices against versions available on Avaya s web site and on your hard disk. You can use the view tabs to select between these two view options. To switch to a different view, click the appropriate view tab. The selected view opens. Figure 2-1. The Device Table - Download View Download View Download View is used for discovering and downloading software to devices. In this context, the word device refers to a module within a device. The table is filled in by the discovery process. Each row of the table displays information about a device to which software can be downloaded. A separate row in the Device Table appears for each type of software that can be downloaded to a specific device. 12 Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide

19 The Device Table Analyzer View When you open Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager, the Device Table appears in Download View with no entries until you discover devices from the network. For more information on discovering devices, refer to Chapter 3, Discovering Devices. Analyzer View is used for checking the software versions currently used by listed devices against the newest releases on Avaya s web site and on your hard disk. For information on checking software status and downloading new software from the Internet, refer to Chapter 5, Analyzing and Retrieving from the Web. Sorting the Device Table To sort the Device Table, click on the column title of the information you want to sort by. An arrow appears in the heading of the column by which the Device Table is being sorted. An arrow pointing up indicates that the Device Table is being sorted in ascending order. An arrow pointing down indicates that the Device Table is being sorted in descending order. Click on the column title again to switch between ascending and descending order. You can sort the Device Table by: Name IP Address Module Device Type Software Type Status (Download View only) Analyzer State (Analyzer View only) Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide 13

20 Chapter 2 Filtering the Device Table You can filter the Device Table in order to reduce the number of devices currently displayed. This can make it easier to work by eliminating devices from the display. You can later add these devices back to the list by running the filter again, without having to re-discover the devices. To filter the Device Table: 1. Select View > Filter. The Filter Devices dialog box opens. Figure 2-2. Filter Devices Dialog Box 2. Select the criteria for the devices you want to display. For more information on filter criteria, refer to Filter Criteria on page Click OK. The filtering criteria are activated and the dialog box closes. Or Click Apply. 21 The Device Table To deactivate filtering: 1. Click Clear. All filtering criteria are selected. 2. Click OK. Filtering is deactivated and the dialog box closes. When the filtering criteria are active, appears in the Status Line. Filter Criteria Filtering by Device Type You can filter by any combination of the following criteria: Device Type - In the Device Type section, select the product categories and sub-categories you want to display. For more information on filtering by device type, refer to Filtering by Device Type on page 15. Software Type - In the Software Type section, select the software entity (Boot Loader, Web Management, or Image) to display devices using that type of software. Analyzer State - In the Analyzer State section, select the icon or icons representing the version update status of devices you want to display. The Device Table only displays devices that meet all the selected criteria. When filtering by product type, you can select families of devices and specific module types. Under each product family name, one or more module types are listed. To display module types, select the product family or click on its name. When you select a product family, all the module types are automatically selected. You can then clear any module types that you do not want to select. Printing the Device Table To print the Device Table: 1. Select File > Print. A standard print dialog box opens. 2. Select a printer. 3. Click OK. The Device Table is printed. 22 Chapter 2 Saving the Device Table To save the information in the Device Table as a text file: 1. Select File > Save As. A file browser window opens. 2. Enter the path and filename and click Save. 23 3 Discovering Devices This chapter explains how to add devices to the Device Table. You can use Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager to download software only to devices in the Device Table. For more information about the Device Table, refer to Chapter 2, The Device Table. This chapter includes the following sections: Discovering Devices from the Platform - Explains how to add devices to the Device Table by discovering the devices from the management platform. Adding Devices Manually - Explains how to add devices to the Device Table manually, using the device s IP address. Discovering Devices from the Platform You can discover all network devices from the management platform, or you can use a filter to discover devices meeting certain criteria. This section describes how to discover devices from the platform in the following ways: Discovering All Devices - Describes how to discover all network devices from the management platform. Discovering Devices by IP Address - Describes how to discover a single device from the management platform based on its IP Address. Discovering Devices Using Filters - Describes how to discover devices from the management platform using a set of filters based on device type and IP address. 24 Chapter 3 To discover devices from the management platform: 1. Click. Or Select Actions > Discover Devices. The Network Discovery dialog box opens. 2. Click the Import from Platform tab. Figure 3-1. Network Discovery Dialog Box - Discover From Platform Discovering All Devices To discover all managed devices from the management platform: 1. In the Network Discovery dialog box, select Insert all devices. 2. Click OK. All managed devices discovered from the platform are added to the Device Table and the Network Discovery dialog box closes. Or Click Apply. All managed devices discovered from the platform are added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box remains open. 18 Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide

25 Discovering Devices The Avaya MultiService Network Manager Update Manager server regularly discovers the devices from the management platform. When you discover devices using Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager, Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager retrieves the device list from the server. Discovering Devices by IP Address To discover devices from the management platform based on their IP address: 1. In the Network Discovery dialog box, select Insert device with IP. A field appears for entering an IP address. 2. In the IP Address field, enter the IP address of the device you want to discover. 3. Click OK. The device with the IP address you entered is added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box closes. Or Click Apply. The device with the IP address you entered is added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box remains open. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide 19

26 Chapter 3 Discovering Devices Using Filters You can use filters to determine which managed devices should be discovered. You can filter the devices based on: Device Type IP Address Both Device Type and IP Address To discover devices using filters: 1. In the Network Discovery dialog box, select Insert devices using filter. A Device Type Filter section and an IP Addresses Filter section appear. 2. To filter by device type, select the types of devices you want to discover in the Device Type Filter section. For information on selecting device types, refer to Filtering by Device Type on page To filter by IP address, enter the IP address of the device you want to discover in the IP Addresses Filter section. You can use the asterisk (*) wildcard or enter a range of values to define a group of devices. For details, refer to Using Wildcards and Ranges in an IP Address on page 21. Enter the first address in the IP Address field and click Add. The IP Address is displayed beneath the IP Address field. You can then repeat the process as many times as you want. To remove one or more IP addresses from the list of addresses, select the addresses you want to remove and click Remove. 4. Click OK. The devices that meet the filter criteria are added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box closes. Or Click Apply. The device that meet the filter criteria are added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box remains open. 20 Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide

27 Discovering Devices Using Wildcards and Ranges in an IP Address You can use an asterisk (*) wildcard in the IP address. The asterisk must replace an entire octet, rather than individual digits. For example, * and *.* are valid entries. However, * and * are not valid entries. You can use a range to represent the last octet. For example, is a valid range. However, and are not valid ranges. The IP address must be written without any spaces. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide 21

28 Chapter 3 Adding Devices Manually If you do not want to add devices in the management platform or your management platform has not yet discovered some devices, you can add devices manually. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager prompts you for additional information about the devices, rather than taking the information from the management platform. To add devices to the Device Table manually: 1. Click. Or Select Edit > Discover Devices. The Network Discovery dialog box opens. 2. Click the Manual Entry tab. 29 Discovering Devices 3. Enter the following Device Parameters: IP Address - Enter the IP address of the device you want to add. You can not use wildcards or ranges in this field. Read Community - Enter the read community for the device you want to add. Write Community - Enter the write community for the device you want to add. Retries - Enter the maximum number of attempts you want the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager to make to contact the device. Timeout - Enter the number of milliseconds Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager should try to establish a connection to the device before reporting that it cannot connect to the device. 4. Enter the parameters for the device and click Add. The device appears in the Device List section, and the IP Address field is cleared. You can then repeat this process as many times as you want. 5. To remove one or more devices from the Device List section, select the devices you want to remove and click Remove. 6. Click OK. The devices in the Device List section are added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box closes. Or Click Apply. The devices in the Device List section are added to the Device Table, and the Network Discovery dialog box remains open. * Note: The Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager does not display an error message if a device can not be added, e.g., if the Read Community is wrong, or the attempt to connect to the device times out. However, the event is recorded in the log. For information on the log, refer to Chapter 6, The Log File. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager User Guide 23

30 4 Downloading Software to Devices This chapter explains how to download software to the devices in the Device Table. It includes the following sections: Download Files Overview - A short overview about download files and where they are located. Configuring Download Parameters - Explains how to view and configure the download parameters. Downloading - Explains how to download software immediately. Delayed Downloads - Explains how to schedule a download for a later time or date. Resetting Modules - Explains how to reset devices after a download. 31 Downloading Software to Devices Download Files Overview Download files contain embedded software for Avayamodules. When a file is downloaded to a module, it affects the abilities of the module. There are three types of download files: Image - An executable file for running the device. Boot Loader - A low-level executable for starting up the device. Web Management - An executable file providing web management capability to the device. * Note: Not all download file types can be downloaded to all devices. All download files are stored in the x:\avaya_dir\mode_dir\userver\backup directory of the server station, where x:\avaya_dir is the directory in which Avaya MultiService Network Manager was installed. mode_dir is NTOV if you are running Avaya MultiService Network Manager in HP NNM Mode and CVS if you are running Avaya MultiService Network Manager in Standalone Mode. * Note: Do not modify or delete the directory in which download files are stored. The server station is the station running HP NNM or Avaya MultiService Network Manager in Standalone Mode. If you are running Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager remotely, all files retrieved from the Web and added manually are saved on the server, and only files on the server can be downloaded to modules. You can copy files from the remote station to the server. For instructions on copying files to the server, refer to Manually Adding Files on page 41. 32 Chapter 4 Configuring Download Parameters This section explains how to view and configure the download parameters. To configure the parameters: 1. In the Device Table, select the device or devices you want to configure. In order for the Configure option to be available, you must: Select a single device. Or Select devices that are all the same device type and software type. 2. Click. Or Select Actions > Configure. The Device Configuration dialog box opens. If you selected multiple devices, only the fields which are the same for all the selected devices will appear with data. The other fields will be empty. Figure 4-1. 33 Downloading Software to Devices You can view and configure the following parameters: Viewing Device Parameters Device Parameters - View the logical name, IP address, slot, and device type, and software type of the selected device. Filename - View and configure the filename and path of the file to be downloaded for the selected device. The device parameters for the selected device are displayed in the Device Definitions section of the Device Configuration dialog box. These parameters are read only. The parameters are: Name - The logical name of the selected device(s). IP Address - The IP address of the selected device(s). Slot - The number of the slot that the selected module occupies in the device(s). Device Type - The type of device(s) selected. Software Type - The type of software downloaded to the selected device(s). * Note: If multiple devices are selected, only parameters whose value is the same for all selected devices are displayed. 34 Chapter 4 Specifying the File to Download In the File section of the Device Configuration dialog box, you can specify the file to be downloaded for the selected device. 1. Select a configuration file to download. 3. Click OK. The selected file will be sent to the module at the next download. To restore the default filename and path, click Defaults. 35 Downloading Software to Devices Downloading This section describes how to download software to devices, and explains the download status messages that are displayed while the files are downloading. This section includes: Starting the Download Process Starting the Download Process - Describes how to start the download process. Download Process Status Messages - Lists the download status messages and what they mean. To start the download process: 1. In the Device Table, select the device or devices to which you want to download. 2. Click. Or Select Actions > Download Now. 36 Chapter 4 Download Process Status Messages During the download process, Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager displays the download progress for each device in the Downloading Progress and File Size columns of the Device Table. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager also displays the download status in the Status column of the Device Table. The statuses that are displayed vary from device to device. The table below lists the different statuses, with a description of each status and the device types to which the status is applicable. For more information about the Device Table, refer to Chapter 2, The Device Table. For a list of errors that can occur during download, refer to Appendix B, Troubleshooting. Table 4-1. 38 Chapter 4 Delayed Downloads This section explains how to schedule a download for a later time or date. To set a delayed download: 1. Select the device or devices to which you want to download. 2. 39 Downloading Software to Devices 3. Set the time, date, and month at which you want the download to begin, as follows: Use the two buttons to the left of the time to set the hour. Use the two buttons to the right of the time to set the minute. Use the two buttons on either side of the year to set the year. Use the two buttons on either side of the month to set the month. In the calendar section, click the day of the month to set the day. 4. Click OK. In the Device Table, the Status column for the device set for delayed download shows Waiting for download on [time and date of download] until the download begins, and the Delayed Download dialog box closes. Or Click Apply. In the Device Table, the Status column for the device set for delayed download shows Waiting for download on [time and date of download] until the download begins, and the Delayed Download dialog box remains open. Cancelling a Delayed Download To cancel a delayed download: 1. Select the device or devices for which you want to cancel a delayed download. 2. Select Actions > Delayed Download > Cancel. 40 Chapter 4 Resetting Modules Some device modules need to be reset before a change to their software takes effect. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager provides the ability to reset selected modules on your network. CAUTION Resetting an individual module in a device may cause the entire device to reset. For example, if you reset the module which is currently the device s master agent, the entire device resets. This may disrupt traffic on your network. To reset modules on your network: 1. Select modules in the Device Table. * Note: Each type of software for a module is represented by a row in the Device Table. Some modules may have more than one entry in the table. 2. Click Reset. 41 Downloading Software to Devices Setting Product Defaults This section explains how to view and change the default filenames for the software files that are downloaded to devices. * Note: When you use Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager s Analyzer function to download a new software version from the web to your hard disk, the default filename automatically changes to the filename of the new version. To view and change default filenames: 1. Select Tools > Product Defaults. The Product Defaults dialog box opens. Figure 4-4. Product Defaults Dialog Box 2. Click on the name of a product family to display a list of product types belonging to that family underneath the family name. 3. Select a product type. 43 5 Analyzing and Retrieving from the Web This chapter explains how to check software currently loaded in devices against the last release of the software on the Avaya web site and how to manually add configuration files to the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager server. If a device is not using the newest software, you can use Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager to retrieve the software from the Avaya web site and download it to the device. This chapter includes the following sections: Performing Web Analysis - Explains how to check the update status of currently loaded software versions against the newest versions on the Avaya web site. Retrieving New Versions from the Web - Explains how to retrieve new software versions from the Avaya web site. Manually Adding Files - Explains how to add files from other sources to the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager server. Performing Web Analysis The Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager can analyze the Avaya web site and compare software versions currently loaded in devices against the newest versions available on the web. To perform web analysis: 1. Click. Or Select Tools > Image Analyzer. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager analyzes the web and displays the Device Table in Analyzer View. The Device Table - Analyzer View The Device Table in Analyzer View displays a status icon for each device to indicate the update status of the software currently running in the device. The table below shows the icons and explains what they indicate. Table 5-1. Software Version Status Icons Icon Description The software version in the device is the newest version available. A newer software version is available on your server. A newer software version is available on Avaya s web site (but not on your server). 45 Analyzing and Retrieving from the Web Retrieving New Versions from the Web You can use Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager to retrieve new software versions from Avaya s web site. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager places the new version in your default directory. You can then download the new versions to devices. For information on downloading software to devices, refer to Chapter 4, Downloading Software to Devices. To retrieve new versions from the web: 1. Click. Or Select Tools > Retrieve Image From the Web. The Retrieve Image From the Web dialog box opens. Table 5-2. Retrieve Image From the Web Dialog Box 2. If you have already performed a web analysis, device types for which newer software is available on the web site (but not on your hard disk) are automatically selected. If you have not performed a web analysis, or if the Device Table is empty, you must manually select the device types for which you want to retrieve new software. The Retrieve Image From the Web dialog box closes, and the Retrieving From the Web status window opens. Or Click Apply. The Retrieve Image From the Web dialog box remains open, and the Retrieving From the Web status window opens. The status window displays the name of the file currently being retrieved and the progress of the current retrieval. Retrieved files are placed on your hard disk. Figure 5-2. 47 Analyzing and Retrieving from the Web Manually Adding Files You can manually add files to the server. To copy a download file to the server: 1. Click. Or Select Tools > Add Image File. A standard File Browser dialog box opens. 4. Browse to the directory on the local machine where the file is stored. 5. Select the configuration file. 6. Click Open. 7. 49 6 The Log File This chapter describes the Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager log. Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager keeps a log of all activity. New log information is appended to the end of the existing log. When you close Avaya MultiService Software Update Manager, the log is erased. This chapter includes the following sections: Viewing the Log - Explains how to open the log, and describes the information contained in the log. Saving the Log - Explains how to save the log. 50 Chapter 6 Viewing the Log To open the log, select View > Log Report. The log opens underneath the Device Table. You can resize the log by dragging the horizontal splitter bar. When a dialog box is open, you can also resize the log by dragging the vertical splitter bar. Figure 6-1. Log Information Item Severity Date/Time Source Message Description The severity of the event, as follows: Normal - A successful action, such as a completed download. Warning - An unsuccessful action, such as failure to discover a device. Major - An event relating to a failure to download to a device. The date and time the event occurred. Displays the IP address or the full device identification of the device to which the event occurred. The nature of the event, such as a successful download to a device or retrieval from the web or an aborted or failed download or retrieval from the web. Saving the Log To save the log as a text file: 1. Click to the left of the log area. The Save dialog box opens. 2. Enter the path and filename. 3. Click Save.
