3 Introduction to the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH Introduction to the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH The EMC NetWorker Module for MEDITECH 8.2 SP1 enables you to perform the following tasks: Schedule, create, and manage local replicas of the MEDITECH volumes when you use the product with the EMC VNX and EMC Symmetrix VMAX storage systems Schedule, create, and manage local and remote replicas of the MEDITECH volumes when you use the product with the EMC RecoverPoint storage system Schedule, create, and manage local and remote replicas of the MEDITECH volumes when you use the product with EMC VPLEX along with the RecoverPoint storage system Integrate NetWorker with the MEDITECH application to perform the scheduled backups and create disaster recovery replicas of the data without interrupting the application Integrate the product with MEDITECH Backup Facility (MBF) to take hardware or array point-in-time snapshots to back up the MEDITECH data to the NetWorker devices Perform Integrated Serverless Backups (ISBs) of the LUNs that VNX, Symmetrix VMAX, and RecoverPoint support to a NetWorker device, such as tape, Data Domain, and disk Perform Integrated Disaster Recovery (IDR) backups to create bookmarks at regular intervals according to the user-defined schedule on a RecoverPoint appliance, and validate the bookmarks in the NMMEDI GUI Perform in-frame point-in-time IDRs by using the VNX's VNX-SNAP and Symmetrix VMAX's VPSNAP snapshot features Perform backups and recoveries in a quick and predictable time frame View the backup and recovery information Symmetrix VMAX installation requirements The NetWorker Module for MEDITECH supports the following Symmetrix VMAX software installation requirements: EMC NetWorker 8.2 SP1 client HBA Adapter and storport Miniport Driver that support EMC Symmetrix VMAX EMC Solutions Enabler 7.6 or later Note: The NetWorker Module for MEDITECH 8.2 SP1 does not support Solutions Enabler 8.0. 4 Symmetrix VMAX configuration requirements Symmetrix VMAX configuration requirements Ensure that you meet the following Symmetrix VMAX configuration requirements to perform the backups: You have at least one clone or VPSNAP LUN per MEDITECH segment. You masked either the clone or the VPSNAP on the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH proxy host. You configured the proxy host as a client on the NetWorker server. As either a SYSTEM user or an Administrator user of the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH proxy host, you are in the Application Administrators group on the NetWorker server. You created the C:\Program Files\EMC NetWorker\nsr\res\symm.res file. The file must contain the source and target devices from Symmetrix VMAX in the Symmetrix ID:<Source_Device_ID> <Target_Device_ID> format, where the target device is either a clone or a VPSNAP. For example, :0B79 0B7. For the IDR In-Frame backups, ensure that the number of target thin devices in the symm.res file is equal to IDR number + 1. The ISB backups use the extra LUN. The ISB backups fail if you used all the thin devices in the symm.res for the IDR In-Frame backups. For example, assume the number of target devices in the symm.res file is 6 for any source device, and the IDR number set is 6. After 6 IDR backups, all the target devices are used for the IDR backups. Now there are no devices to perform an ISB backup. If you perform an ISB backup, the backup fails. Therefore, you must always specify an extra target device in symm.res, for ISB backups. You specified the appropriate application information variable in the Application information field in the Client Properties dialog box of the NMC. Configuring the NetWorker Management Console on page 9 provides information. Configuring Symmetrix VMAX to perform ISB backups Perform the following steps to configure Symmetrix VMAX to perform ISB backups: 1. Identify the source devices. 2. Identify the target devices on Symmetrix VMAX and ensure that the target devices are mapped to the proxy host. 3. If you use the VPSNAP snapshot technology for backups, ensure that you meet the following requirements: Both the source and target devices are thin devices. All the target devices of a source device are bound to the same thin pool. 4. Create the symm.res file with the contents in the following format, in the C:\Program Files\EMC NetWorker\nsr\res folder: Symmetrix ID:<Source_Device_ID> <Target_Device_ID> Example: :05A9 05B2 If there are four source devices, the contents in the symm.res file look similar to the following contents: :05A9 05B :05A8 05B :05AA 05B :05AB 05B5 Configuring Symmetrix VMAX to perform IDR backups Perform the following steps to configure Symmetrix VMAX to perform IDR backups: 1. Identify the source devices. 2. Identify the target devices on Symmetrix VMAX and ensure that the target devices are mapped to the proxy host. 3. If you use the VPSNAP snapshot technology for backups, ensure that you meet the following requirements: Both the source and target devices are thin devices. All the target devices of a source device are bound to the same thin pool. 4. Repeat step1 and step 2 for all the source LUNs to back up. 5. 6 Configuring Symmetrix VMAX to use the same source device to perform ISB and IDR backups Configuring Symmetrix VMAX to use the same source device to perform ISB and IDR backups Perform the following steps to configure Symmetrix VMAX to use the same source device to perform ISB and IDR backups: 1. Ensure that the source device is a thin device. Assume that you have two thin source devices 06EE and 06ED. 2. Configure the symm.res file, depending on the IDR number. Assume that you want to retain 6 snapshots. So, you must configure 6 thin devices on the proxy server for each source LUN, which are used for IDR backups. In this example, the following are the thin devices: 06F7, 06F8, 06F9, 06FA, 06FB, 06FC, 06FD and 06FF, 0700, 0701, 0702, 0703, 0704, 0705 For the ISB backups of the same source LUN with TF-Clone, you require an additional device for each source LUN. The device can be either a thin or a thick device. For example, 06FE and You require N = IDR Number + 1 target devices for both the ISB and IDR backups to succeed. Therefore, the contents in the symm.res file look similar to the following contents: :06EE 06F7 06F8 06F9 06FA 06FB 06FC 06FD :06ED 06FF By using NMC, create two groups one for the ISB backups with TF-Clone, for example, VMAX_ISB_CLONE and the other for the IDR backups with TF-Snap, for example, VMAX_IDR_SNAP. 4. In the Application information field of the Client Properties dialog box, type the following contents: SYMM_SNAP_TECH=CLONE for the VMAX_ISB_CLONE group SYMM_SNAP_TECH=VPSNAP for the VMAX_IDR_SNAP group 5. Ensure that the groups do not overlap during the backups. 7 Configuring the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH Configuring the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH Configuring the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH includes the following tasks: Adding a Coherency Group Adding a Symmetrix VMAX storage array Adding a Coherency Group Perform the following steps to add a Coherency Group: 1. In the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH window, click Configure. 2. Click Add Group. The Add Coherency Group dialog box appears. 3. Under Coherency Group common parameters, specify the following fields: Group Name: Type a name for the group of MEDITECH hosts that you want to back up. The group name can contain up to 64 alphanumeric characters, spaces, underscores (_), and hyphens (-). MBI User Name: Type the username of the MBI server, by using which the MEDITECH file servers are configured. MBI Password: Type the password of the MBI server, by using which the MEDITECH file servers are configured. Confirm password: Re-type the password of the MBI server, by using which the MEDITECH file servers are configured. SAN Type: Select VMAX. Note: All the hosts in the Coherency Group must have the same MBI server account username and password, and SAN type. 4. Perform and repeat the following steps to add the MEDITECH hosts (MBI servers) to the Coherency Group: a. Under MEDITECH Hosts, specify the following fields: MBI Host Name: Type the name of the MBI server. Click Clear to clear the host name. MBI Port: Type the port number that you use to communicate with the MBI server. The default port number is b. Click the right arrow to add the host to the Coherency Group. The hostname and the port number appear in the table. 8 Configuring the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH c. To modify the information of a host: 1. Select the hostname in the table and click the left arrow. 2. Edit the hostname and the port number in the MBI Host Name and the MBI Port fields. 3. Click the right arrow to add the host to the Coherency Group. The hostname and the port number appear in the table. 4. Click Verify. The NetWorker Module for MEDITECH performs the following tasks: a. Validates the user credentials. b. Checks whether the MBI server works for all the MEDITECH file servers. c. Writes the information to the nsr\applogs\nwmedi.log file. d. Displays a validation message that states whether the specified user credentials are correct. In the message box, click OK. 5. To remove a host from the Coherency Group, click Remove. 5. Under Disaster Recovery Options: a. Select Create Integrated Disaster Recovery Images to back up the IDR images. b. In the Number of IDR images to create field, specify a value 2 through 32. The default value is Click OK. Adding a VMAX storage array Perform the following steps to add a VMAX storage array: 1. In the NetWorker Module for MEDITECH window, click Configure. 2. Click Add Array. The Add Storage Array dialog box appears. 3. On the EMC VMAX tab, perform one of the following steps and click OK: In the Serial Number field, type the ID of the Symmetrix VMAX array. Click Discover to select the required Symmetrix VMAX array. 9 Configuring the NetWorker Management Console Configuring the NetWorker Management Console Documentation In the NMC, create a group and add a client to it by performing the following steps in the Create Client dialog box: 1. On the General tab, in the Save set field, type either MEDI:<Coherency_Group_Name> or MEDI:<Coherency_Group_Name>/<MBI_Hostname>/<FILESERVER_Hostname> <Drive_Letter> For example, MEDI:CG1 2. On the Apps & Modules tab: In the Backup command field, type nsrmedisv.
