NEW! IBM Pre-Upgrade Verification Tool 17

What is the IBM Pre-Upgrade Verification Tool? As-is tool developed by IBM to help ensure a successful i5/os upgrade Tool checks to see if key required pre-upgrade steps have been successfully completed If not, the steps that were missed or completed incorrectly are flagged YOU then have the opportunity to successfully complete the missing/incorrect steps Important the tool itself does not automatically perform any corrective actions/missed steps Useful to anyone preparing for an upgrade Source: OS/400 V5R2M0 and above Target : up to i5/os V6R1M0 18

New Pre-Upgrade Verification Tool (PRUV) verifies: Prepare for Install steps Prerequisite PTFs applied Acceptance of Software Agreements Allocation of additional LIC space System values ANZOBJCVN PTFs applied ( V6R1 only) etc. Checks for other items that may prevent a successful upgrade Damaged system profiles Duplicate/extension files in system libraries etc. Optionally performs other steps, including checking for the existence of useful items prior to the upgrade including Performance data BRMS recovery report etc. 19

PRUV Tool Requirements: Client Windows PC Server: OS/400 V5R2/V5R3 or i5/os V5R4 and Host Servers (Option 12) installed Download tool from IBM site: The URL/Web site is contained in the knowledgebase document KB (or search for keyword PRUV ) ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.nsf/1ac66549a b e/5a6b3 3f04dcc093a a ?OpenDocument&Highlight=2,pruv 20

3 rd Party & In House Developed Software Solutions In house developed applications? Tested yet on V6R1? Has ANZOBJCVN tool been used yet? Important! Contact Application Providers/Vendor(s) Supported and tested on IBM i 6.1? Any fixes/ptfs required? Will conversion occur on client system or will 6.1 version be shipped out? Any licensing fee considerations? Migration vs. upgrade (i.e. keeping same System i or iseries serial number?) 32

Major IBM i 6.1 Upgrade Planning Tasks Analyze Object Conversion ANZOBJCNV 33

What is Being Done? (Re-)create ALL Machine Interface (MI) programs MI programs from all previous releases Integrated Language Environment (ILE), Original Program Model (OPM) programs Applications, plus i5/os and other IBM products A bit of history - previous MI program refreshes: System/38 CPF to OS/400 V1R CISC to RISC (V3R6)

Program Creation (Simplified) Program observability subset source code Compiler creation data hardware instructions MI conceptual interface CRT instr Licensed Internal Code (LIC) Translator, Binder 35

Conversion -- Why? Improve software Capitalize on MI s object-based, abstract definition Convert programs to faster, better implementations No source code changes needed; usually source not even needed Immediately use POWER6 features without need to recompile Increase overall system value Provide improvements to already robust system integrity, safety Demonstrate system technical vitality Prove ability to adapt to new hardware and software designs Add functions for easier application development, deployment 36

Examples Why Conversion? Eradicate program alterations, extend unique ability to remove code corruption Every runnable MI application includes creation data, so can be converted without source No ongoing updates required Restore system state program only if part of i5/os Allow ALL programs to use teraspace Improve general performance Memory access, pointer use, procedure calls, activation Introduce Adaptive Code Generation Exploit latest hardware, without penalty on older hardware Used by default, with no compile needed 37

About Program Conversion Replace existing program object without compile One-time process, but required either direction V5R4 or V5R3 V6R1 V5R4 or V5R3 V6R1 Program TGTRLS does NOT affect need for conversion Part of all V6R1 systems No options or added fees Average per-program convert times, large sample Sub-second on fastest processors, < 4 seconds on slowest Programs with many modules can take a lot longer 38

Programs with creation data, on pre-v6r1 systems Programs created/converted on V6R1 systems with pre-power6 hardware Programs created/converted on V6R1 systems with POWER6 hardware Optional conversion during restore, mandatory before running Mandatory conversion during restore No conversion required (But may be done if desired) 39

Program Conversion -- Exception Cases Program creation data is not available, even to LIC Program or constituent module target release before V5R1 AND creation data was removed Must compile from source IF creation data is gone Program relies on unsupported alterations Conversion removes such modifications Must use supported interfaces instead However, please note that most programs can be converted! Program and constituent modules target release at least V5R1 Older programs also, unless creation data removed 40

When Does Program Conversion Occur? Combination of 3 conversion methods on V6R1: At restore/install FRCOBJCVN(*YES *ALL) or change QFRCCVNRST >= 2 Scheduled (you initiate) STROBJCVN by library (*ALLUSR or by name) At first call/activation Consider any potential affect on end users Consider application behaviors and potential affect system performance NOTE: Must regenerate applications that won t convert (compile from source or acquire ) 41

i5/os Program Conversion: Getting Ready for i5/os V6R1 Redpaper 42

FYI: Info APAR II14306 ANZOBJCVN ibm.com/n_dir/nas4apar.nsf/51d11a683a56a5cc862564c000763b23/3af47a966c4df c6868?OpenDocument Tip: After downloading the PTF listed in the Redpaper s appendix, double check with this Info. APAR. 43

Using ANZOBJCVN *ALLOBJ special authority needed to run ANZOBJCVN The collection phase can take a long time suggest running in Batch Note that any primary or secondary independent ASP referenced in ANZOBJCVN command must be Varied on and have available status prior to running command Ensure that the QUSRSYS library is not ahead of the QSYS library in the library list (if it is the ANZOBJCVN command will fail) Conversion time estimates Based on the system model on which ANZOBJCVN is being run To estimate the conversion times for a different model requires the creation of a data area (QIZAFTCD) in QUSRSYS Full details in ITSO Redpaper at Note: Could also use DSPPGM or DSPSRVPGM to spot check a few programs. Creation data unavailable for conversion if: For ILE (service) programs, All creation data is *NO For OPM programs, Observable information is *NONE 44

ANZOBJCVN Collection Phase Possible to collect all at once or in two steps 45

Example: ANZOBJCVN Collection Phase ( all at once ) 46

ANZOBJCVN Collection Phase Can be very long running recommend submitting as a batch job 47

ANZOBJCVN Reporting 48

ANZOBJCVN: Reporting -- *CVNPRB Note: *CVNPRB --- results in a detailed report of program objects that will not convert being generated for each library specified in the previous collection. 49

ANZOBJCVN: Reporting -- *CVNPRB 50

ANZOBJCVN: Reporting -- *CVNPRB 51

ANZOBJCVN: Reporting -- *LIBSUM Note: *LIBSUM -- results in a summary report being generated for each library specified in the previous collection. 52

ANZOBJCVN: Reporting -- *LIBSUM TIP: Note that the conversion times listed on the *LIBSUM report are in hours, minutes, and seconds. 53 However, the conversion times listed in any *LIBDTL report would be in seconds or parts of seconds only.

ANZOBJCVN: Reporting -- *LIBSUM 54

What if programs are identified as Cannot Convert? First is the program even being used or is it obsolete? If vendor application, contact Application Provider Supported and tested on IBM i 6.1? Any fixes/ptfs required? Will conversion occur on client system or will IBM i 6.1 version be shipped out? Any licensing fee considerations? Migration vs. upgrade (e.g. keeping same System i serial number?) If no source can be obtained and function still needed Replace with another solution/tool? 55

Summary IBM i Program Conversion Program conversion will be required to run with IBM i 6.1 Program conversion automatically updates software to exploit latest system enhancements Not required for POWER6, which can run i5/os V5R4 (with V5R4M5 LIC) Conversion requires program's creation data Note that all programs created for V5R1 or later releases have had their creation data automatically saved during program creation Tool available now to analyze program conversion for i5/os V5R3 and/or V5R4 systems Identifies potential issues, if any, and estimates conversion time Program conversion is performed during install/restore of applications, at first use or at a scheduled time Utilize the ITSO Redpaper: IBM i5/os Program Conversion Getting Ready for i5/os V6R1 56
