4 1.1 Install and Launch NetBrain Workstation The administrator should have already set up the shared workspace and the shared data should be stored in NetBrain s Workspace Server. The end-user logs into the server and the workspace data will be automatically downloaded to the workstation from the server. The workstation is used for documentation, troubleshooting, and design. 1. Download and install the workstation software 2. Set up the NetBrain server address Enter or domain name of your License Server>/netbrain in your web browser to download the software. Launch Workstation and select the Change Server option from the Login window. 3. Enter username and password Ask your Administrator for the username and password. The default username/password is admin/admin. 4. The system will automatically download the shared workspace data from the Server 4

6 1.3 Common Workflow Search NetBrain workspace, database and Visio maps on your PC using: IP address or device hostname Text inside maps Configuration keywords Model, serial number, MAC, etc. From the search results, Create a dynamic Q-map (L3 and L2) instantly View the relevant Visio diagrams Directly from the map, Visualize the network design Analyze the map with Network Analysis Tools set 1. Search Enter a keyword such as IP address, configuration keyword or model in the Search box and press the Enter key. Tip: Click the Scope and Advanced Device Search hyperlink on Search UI to define search scope and specify more precise search criteria. 2. Map the search results Mouse over a search result such as a Cisco Router. Select L3 Page and click on the map to create a dynamic Q-map. 3. Analyze from the map Select the Qapp Network Analysis Tools and select the various operations from the related toolsets as well as from the map floating menu. 6

7 2.1 Map Around a Device Map L3 connections around a device Use Case: Troubleshoot a problematic router BGP neighbors are down 1. Search the device Enter the IP address or device name in the Search field and press the Enter key. Tip: Click the Scope and Advanced Device Search hyperlink on Search UI to define search scope and specify more precise search criteria. 2. Map the search result Mouse over a device in the search result. Click the Map link. 3. View the neighbors Click on the red plus sign to open the neighbor window. 4. Draw the neighbors Double-click on all neighbors or one specific neighbor to draw the neighbor(s) on the map. 5. Draw the neighbor(s) of the neighbor(s) Repeat steps 3 and 4 for more neighbors till all neighbor devices you are interested in are drawn on the map. 7

8 2.2 Drill Down on a Site Organize and manage a large network Present a high level overview of the whole network Drill down to devices inside a Site 1. Map a Site Right-click on a Site, choose Overview Map or Topology Map to map a Site. 2. Drill down to devices inside a Site Right-click on a Site, choose Action Pane to open Site Action Pane. Drill down to the devices in current Site via frequently used tools. 8

9 2.3 View and Annotate Design Details Zoom in on the map to view details Browse and annotate the design Use Case: Create a design map for routing, multicasting, etc 1. Zoom in the map Scroll the wheel of the mouse forward. 2. View the configurations of a network object Mouse over a network object such as routing protocol, interface, or ACL. 3. Annotate a network design Click on the Display on the current map button. 9

10 2.4 Observe a Device Access device data quickly Launch relevant operations easily 1. Display Observer Focus Scroll mouse wheel to zoom in to 280% on a Qmap. 2. Display Observer Pane When zooming in to 300%, the Observer Pane will open. Keep zooming into the Qmap, the Observer pages will rotate. 3. Switch Observer Pane among objects on the map Click another object (device or LAN segment) on the map to observe it. 10

11 2.5 Create Visio Maps Instantly Export NetBrain Qmap to Visio format Use Case: Share a map with someone without access to a NetBrain Workstation Generate static Visio maps for inventory or compliance purposes 1. Create a Visio map Click on Export > Visio Map from the map s floating menu. Note: Microsoft Visio must be installed for this feature to work. There is a limitation on the trial license for this feature. You can only export a map with 50 or fewer devices to Visio. 11

12 2.6 Find Relevant Maps Instantly Manage thousands of maps in the map center Find Visio or dynamic maps by keywords instantly Use Case: Quickly pull out Visio maps when you need them 1. Search the maps using any text on the map, device name or IP address 2. Open the maps inside NetBrain 3. Find all relevant maps for a dynamic Qmap Enter the text, hostname or IP address in the Search field. Check the Map option and click the Search button. Double-click a map (Visio or dynamic) to open it inside NetBrain. Click on Run > Search Relevant Maps from the map s floating menu. Note: When NetBrain Workstation starts up, it will automatically scan and index your local disk for Visio and Qmaps. You can mount any shared directory for Visio maps to your local disk for NetBrain to search. 12

13 2.7 Map L2 Connection for an IP Find the switch port connected to an IP address and map out the connection Use Case: Block the traffic from a virusinfected server 1. Search the IP address Enter the IP address in the Search field and press the Enter key. 2. Create an L2 map from the search results 3. Draw other switch neighbors Mouse over a device in the search results pane. Click on L2 Neighbor then click the Map link. Click on the red plus sign of the switch to extend its neighbors. 13

14 2.8 Map L2 Connections of a LAN Segment Map the L2 connections for a site Use Case: Document a data center 1. Search the LAN segment 2. Create an L2 map from the search results 3. Highlight the LAN segment Enter the LAN segment subnet address (e.g., /24 ) in the Search field and press the Enter key. In the search result pane, mouse over a network segment. Click on L2 Page, then click the View Larger Map link. Click on the blank space of the map and select Highlight > Highlight LAN Segment from the map s floating menu. 14

15 2.9 Define and Map a Dynamic Device Group Define device groups dynamically so that their devices and maps can be automatically updated Note: NetBrain system will automatically define and create some commonly used dynamic device groups for you. Use Case: Share and auto update the maps for network sites 1. Create a new device group 2. Select devices dynamically 3. Define the search criteria In the Workspace pane, right-click on the Shared node under Device Group and select the New Device Group option. Click on the Dynamic button in the Device Group Properties window. Define search criteria according to the device type, hostname, and IP address, etc. 4. Search the devices Click on the Search button. 5. Map the device group Right-click on the device group and select the Topology Map option. 15

16 2.10 Auto Update Maps Validate a map against the current network state Auto update NetBrain maps and Visio maps Use Case: Automatically create and update maps for data centers 1. Validate the map against the current baseline Open an old map. Click on Map > Validate > Highlight Change from the menu bar. 2. Regenerate the map Click on the Regenerate Map button to update the map. 3. Schedule map update Click on the Schedule button to set up a schedule to automatically update maps. 16

17 2.11 One-Click Word Document from the Map Create a Word document instantly from a map Use Case: Create inventory, design, or troubleshooting documents 1. Open the Network Documentation window 2. Select the data to export Click on Export > Word Document from the map s floating menu. Select a template and click on the Advanced button to select which data to export. 3. Select a target file Select a target file. 4. Create a Word Click on the Finish button. Document Note: There is a limitation in the trial license for this feature. You can only create a Word Document for a map with 50 or fewer devices. 17

18 3.1 Visualize L3 Design Visualize the network s design such as routing, MPLS VRF, and multicasting Analyze the configurations of a network s design Use Case: Visualize the routing design for a core network Determine if a network is QoS/VoIP ready 1. Highlight routing protocols Select Highlight > Routing Protocol from the map s floating menu. 2. Open Design Reader pane From the menu under the Home tag, click on the Qapp drop down list and select Network Analysis Tools, then select Analyze > Design Reader. 3. View the configurations of two devices such as BGP neighbors 4. Select a design filter such as All BGP Configuration Select two devices on the map and their configurations will be displayed at the bottom. Select a design filter in the lower left pane. 18

19 3.2 Visualize L2 Design Highlight the VLAN, the STP blocked ports, or voice VLAN View L2 port configuration Use Case: Understand the L2 design 1. Highlight LAN segment Select Highlight > Highlight LAN Segment from the map s floating menu. 2. View the port configuration 3. Annotate the configuration in the map Mouse over the port and the configuration will be displayed in the tip window. Click on the Display on the current map icon. 19

20 3.3 Configuration Analysis View the current and historical configurations Compare the current and historical configurations Use Case: Identify configuration changes before and after implementing a network change Identify recent configuration changes during troubleshooting 1. View the configurations Select a device on the map and click on the Config > Config option from the map s floating menu. 2. Select a source such as the current baseline or a historical benchmarked data By default, the configurations used to draw the map (usually the current baseline) will be displayed. Select another source here. 3. Search the configurations Click on the Search button. 4. Compare two configurations Click on the Compare button and select two sources. 20

21 3.4 Routing Analysis View the route table and find the route to a destination quickly Find out how a route is propagated Use Case: Discover a flapping route 1. View the route table Select a device and click on Route Table > Route Table from the floating menu. 2. Sort the route entries Click on a parameter to sort route entries by this parameter. Eg., sort the routes by Age in ascending order to find any flapping routes. 3.. Find the route for a destination Enter the destination IP address or subnet into the Filter field of the Route Table pane, then press the Enter key. 4. Map the route on the map Create a new map and drag and drop a route entry to the Qmap. 5. Find out how a route is propagated Click Go To Next-hop button to discover how this subnet is routed to the next hop device. Continue this process till the destination is reached. 21

22 3.5 Log Into to a Network Device Work on the old CLI window and the map side by side. Use Case: Disable a switch port connected to the a virus-infected server View the output of a BGP routing table of a router and its topology map side by side 1. Search the device Enter the device hostname in the Search field and press the Enter key. 2. Create the Q-map around this device Mouse over a device in the search results and click the View Larger Map link. 3. Log into the device Select a device on the map and click CLI > Telnet/SSH from the map s floating menu. Note: The system uses the credentials in the local CLI settings to log into a device. Click Workspace > Settings within Local CLI Settings to enter the local CLI settings. 22

23 4.1 Map an Application Path Discover and map the application path (L3 and L2) between two end points Discover the path that goes through ACL/PBR/MPLS Core/MPLS VRF Lite/NAT etc. Deep Packet Forwarding Visualization Use Case: Troubleshoot a slow application Document critical applications 1. Enter the source and destination IP addresses In the ribbon menu under the Home tab, enter IP addresses in Field A and B. 2. Select the path direction Click the arrow to select the path direction. 3. Select the discovery option Click on the Expand icon. Select an option: Via Live Network (live path) or Via Cached Route in Data Folder (historical path). Click Find path to map the path. 4. View the Path Log Click on the corresponding tabs in the Path Log pane to view the detail logs. 23

24 4.2 Map L2 Connections Along a Path Map L2 connections along an L3 path Use Case: Troubleshoot a slow application Document critical applications 1. View L2 path Click an L3 path curve and select View L2 Path from the map s floating menu. 2. View port configuration along the path Mouse over a switch port and view its configuration in the tip window. 24

25 4.3 Monitoring Visualize the device/interface status and performance data on the map Visualize the routing protocols and routing neighbors on the map. Use Case: Identify a down/unstable device or interface Identify any interfaces with high bandwidth or devices with high CPU or memory usage Monitor BGP/OSPF/EIGRP/IS-IS neighbors and routes Monitor Multicast changes 1. Turn on monitoring Click on the Monitor button from the map s floating menu. Choose Overall Health monitor profile and click Run. 2. View specific data Click a specific item on the left side of Monitor Result pane, the corresponding monitor chart will be displayed on the right. 3. Turn off monitoring Click on the Monitor button again. Note: If the interface delay or bandwidth usage is not visible, you can zoom into the Qmap or drag the link longer to make it visible. 25

26 4.4 Batch Compare Configurations and Routings Compare configurations and routings for all devices on the map Use Case: Identify any missing routes after implementing a network change Identify configuration changes that may cause a network problem 1. Compare configurations and routings for all devices on the map 2. Select two data sources and data to be compared 3. View the routing change statistics and the routing changes On Qmap3, from the map s floating menu, click on Change Analysis > Compare Historical Data. Select two Data Folders (::Last Week and ::Current Baseline) and the data to be compared (Configuration File and Route table). Click on the Compare button. Double-click the router Bos-Core1-Tr in the Batch Compare Route Tables pane to view its routing changes. You can filter the routing change for a destination ( ). 4. View the configuration changes Double-click the router Bos-Core1-Tr in the Batch Compare Config pane to check the configuration change details. Note the static routing configuration that caused the routing loop issue. Note: The server Data Folders (begin with :: ) are automatically created by the benchmark tasks on the server.

27 4.5 IP Accounting Find the top talker via IP Accounting Use Case: Troubleshoot high bandwidth usage 1. Launch IP Accounting Right-click on the bandwidth usage of an interface and select IP Accounting. Note: The interface must have IP Accounting configured. 2. Sort the IP accounting results Click on a field such as Packets per Second to sort the results. 3. Create the path Right-click an entry and select Create Path to map out the path for this entry. 27

28 4.6 IP SLA View packet loss, jitter and latency between two devices across a LAN or WAN link Use Case: Troubleshoot VoIP 1. Open IP SLA Manager Click on the Qapp drop-down list and select Network Analysis Tools, then select Advanced Tools>IP SLA. 2. Refresh the operations Click the Refresh button to refresh IP SLA operations. 3. Select an IP SLA operation Select an IP SLA operation. 4. Start the operation and view IP SLA result chart 5. Map the operation and view results on the map 6. Display the live IP SLA results on the map Click on Start and then Show Chart. Create a new map. From the IP SLA Result pane, click on the Find Path button. Switch back to the IP SLA Result pane, then click on the Highlight In Map button. Click on the Monitor button to turn on monitoring. 28

29 4.7 NetFlow Traffic Analysis Find the top talker using NetFlow Use Case: Troubleshoot high bandwidth usage 1. Launch NetFlow Right-click on the bandwidth usage of an interface and select NetFlow. Note: The interface must have NetFlow configured. 2. Sort the NetFlow results Click on a field to sort the results. 3. Create the path Right-click an entry and select Create Path to map out the path for this entry.

30 5.1 Instant Access to NetBrain Functions Run NetBrain s built-in functions defined in Qapp group Use Case: Leverage NetBrain's powerful functions (more than 30 available) more easily without diving deeply into the software Sample: Launch Asset Report with Qapp 1. Select Network Document in "Automation Qapp" blocks. 2. Select Document function sets. 3. The Asset Report window opens. From the Ribbon interface Home tab "Automation Qapp" blocks, select Network Document to perform a variety of tasks with NetBrain functions. Select the Document function sets, then click Asset Report. Create reports with the Asset Report feature. 30

31 5.2 Run General Qapps in Qapp Group Run NetBrain s built-in Qapps defined in Qapp group 1. Select Qapp in "Automation Qapp" blocks. From the Ribbon interface Home tab "Automation Qapp" blocks, select individual Qapp tasks to perform a variety of network analysis or troubleshooting tasks with NetBrain s Automation Qapp. 2. Select function sets. Select the function sets and the Qapp task you want to run. 3. The Run Qapp window opens. Click Device Input button and select the devices that you want this Qapp on and then click Run to execute the Procedure. 31

32 5.3 Run Monitor Qapp in Qapp Group Run instant monitor defined in Qapp group 1. Select Qapp in "Automation Qapp" blocks. From the Ribbon interface Home tab "Automation Qapp" blocks, select individual Qapp tasks to perform a variety of network analysis or troubleshooting tasks with NetBrain s Instant Monitor. 2. Select function sets. Select the function sets and the monitor task you want to run. 3. The Run Monitor window opens. The predefined Monitor profile will automatically select devices in the opened Qmap as device input. Click Run. 32

33 5.4 Qapp Center Store and manage the Qapps and components of the Qapps in Qapp Center Use Case: User can categorize, define, manage, and share Qapp in the Qmap Center 1. Open Qapp Center pane. From the Ribbon interface, go to the bottom left of the window, the click Qapp Center to open the Qapp Center pane. 2. Browse the files in Qapp Center. 3. Click on a Qapp to preview. There are three types of Qapp organized under the Qapp s hierarchical tree: Built-in Qapp Shared Qapp My Files The Qapp Preview pane provides information such as the Qapp name, author, description, sample Qapp/picture 33

34 5.5 Create fast Qapp via Qapp Wizard Write a Qapp in just three steps by following a task wizard 1. Open Qapp Wizard and select Task Click Qapp Wizard button, select Monitor and then click Next button 2. Enter CLI Command and select Parser 3. Select positions for selected variables Enter Show interface-->select Show interface (Cisco Router and Cisco IOS Switch) in drop-down list --click Apply in Parser Preview window-->check the variables such as $interface, $input_error and $crc --> click Next Select positions for selected variables, specify the variable $intf as interface name for command and click Finish button. Then you could save and run the Qapp. 34

Verify Network Change Click Benchmark Before to perform benchmark before network change. Click Execute to switch to Execute view to push the predefined commands to specified network devices. Click Benchmark After to perform benchmark after network change. Click Compare to compare benchmark before data with benchmark after data to analyze and verify network change results. 4. Document Click Document to create a document for the network change automatically. 35

36 6.2 Define Network Change Task Annotate network change task Define network change commands Define benchmark show commands 1. Annotate network change task 2. Define network change commands 3. Define benchmark show commands Click Summary to switch to Summary view and annotate this change task. Click Define Network Change to switch to network change view, define configlet, and rollback config. Click Benchmark Before or Benchmark After to switch to the corresponding view, then define the show commands that can reveal the difference. 36

37 6.3 Implement Network Change Task Push predefined configlet to network devices. Perform Benchmark both before and after the network change. 1. Perform benchmark before network change Click Benchmark Before to switch to Benchmark Before view, then click Run CLI Commands to issue the predefined show commands to retrieve data from the live network (before change). 2. Execute change task Click Execute to switch to Execute view, then click the button to push predefined configlet to network devices. 3. Define benchmark show commands Click Benchmark After to switch to Benchmark After view, then click Run CLI Commands to issue the predefined show commands to retrieve data from the live network (after change). 37

38 6.4 Verify Network Change Results Identify configuration changes before and after implementing a network change Task Compare the benchmark before data and benchmark after data to verify the network change Task. 1. Select Execute Time Select the Execution Time from the drop-down list. 2. Select data folders to compare Select two Benchmark Data Folders to compare. 3. Compare the differences Click Compare button to compare. 4. Review and verify the network change Double-click an entry to see the differences highlighted. 38

39 6.5 Document Create a word document to document the network change task 1. Set export document options Click Document to open the Export Document window, then select the options to be exported to the document. 2. Select Benchmark DataFolders to compare Select two Benchmark Data Folders to compare. 3. Export document Click OK to export the network change task document. 39

40 6.6 View Change Analysis Results Change Analysis automatically compare server benchmark data with the last server benchmark task, and the change result can be shown in EE workstation with 3 components: 1. Time Line Panel Shows the change results in a bar chart format for a specified time range 2. Map Each device now includes a badge icon to indicate how many changes occurred on the device 3. Change Analysis Panel Displays detailed change results, presented in two ways: data type or device 1. Show incremental change Select Change Analysis > Show Incremental Change from the map s floating menu. 2. View Change Analysis results View Change Analysis results from Time Lime Panel, Map and Change Analysis Panel. 3. Quit Change Analysis Select Change Analysis > Quit Change Analysis to quit the Change Analysis mode. 40

41 6.7 Drill Down the Detail Changes Drill down the detail changes of each devices/objects. 1. Show incremental change 2. View the specific Change Analysis 3. Drill down the detail changes Select Change Analysis > Show Incremental Change from the map s floating menu. Move the T1 Pointer to the specific Benchmark task to show the Change Analysis results on the Qmap and the Change Analysis Panel. Double-click the specific items to drill down the detail changes. 41

42 7.1 Thin Client Login Introduce how to log in to Thin Client 1. Input Thin Client web address In search bar of web browser, enter server ip /workspace/workspace number/login.html Note: (1) Replace the workspace server ip filed and workspace number filed in the above URL with your real workspace server ip address and workspace number. By default, the workspace number is 1. For example, your workspace server IP is , there are 5 workspaces under the workspace server ( ) and you would like to visit thin client based on number 3 workspace, please fill the workspace server ip filed with , the workspace number filed with 3, and the URL will be: 2. Enter you your user name and password (2) Workspace server IP is the IP address where your workspace server is installed. For administrators, the default user name and password are admin and admin respectively 3. Log into Thin Client Click Log in Button to login to Thin Client 42

43 7.2 Overview Map Learn Basic Information and Operation in Overview Map 1. In Hierarchy View, overview map indicates the parent-child relationships of all sites in network. 2. Click to switch to Topology View, which shows relationship between all leaf sites in current network. 3.Click to adjust the layout and to update the overview map once network site structure is changed. 43

44 7.3 Search Introduce how to search in Thin Client 1. Input a string in Search Bar Enter a string, such as hostname, IP,IP/MASK or any string 1 2. Click Search button Click Search button to start search 3. View search results 13 kinds of result data could be display: Device, Configuration File, Show Commands, IP Interface, Site, Device Group, Link Group, Media, End System, One- IP-Table, Do-not-Scan, MPLS, Map 2

45 7.3.1 Search View Data in search results and create map by search 1. Click device hostname, icon or any hyperlink to open detailed search result window 2. Select different tab to look various data about device, such as Site Map, Topo Map, Configuration, Device Properties, Data Table, CLI Commands, and you can also export data which you are interested in. 3. In Topo Map tab, Click to create corresponding Map when cursor changes to

46 7.4.1 Topology Map - Create dynamic L3/L2 Map Ways to create dynamic L3/L2 Map in Thin Client 1. Create New Map from tab or main bar and click Add Devices in the floating menu bar 2. Open site pane and drag and drop devices from site pane to create topology page 3. Create a map by searching a devices(see Search section)

49 7.4.4 Topology Map View Data & Export 1. Click one device to show floating menu, which are Extend Neighbor, View Data and Create Note from left to right. 2. Click,View Data window pops up.
