PCI Card PCI IDE 100 RAID Card With 3 IEEE-1394 Installation Manual PCI1394RAID

1 General Description The StarTech.com PCI IDE RAID card with 3 IEEE-1394 provides an ideal interconnection for multimedia applications. It provides both I/O port integration and board space consolidation. Peripherals can communicate directly with each other without burdening the IDE1394RAID card. It increases the efficency of data transactions while simplifying software driver designs. It allows you to develop Plug-in-Play solutions. Features 1. Full IEEE-1394 OHCI compliance 2. Up to 400Mbits/sec 1394 transfer rate 3. Supports both internal and external connectors 4. Real Time transmission of data System Requirements 1. One PCI slot 2. One free IRQ Getting Started This section is designed to help you prepare the PCI1394RAID for installation. Please read through this section carefully before attempting to install the PCI1394RAID. This package should contain: 1 x PCI IDE 100 RAID Card 1 x IEEE 1394 Firewire cable 2 x IDE cables 1 x Driver disk 1 x Driver CD Installing the PCI1394RAID PCI cards, like all computer equipment, are subject to static electricity. Be sure that you are properly grounded. StarTech.com recommends that you wear an anti-static strap and that your system is unplugged before doing any work on a computer. Installing the card 1. Make sure your system is turned off and that you are grounded. 2. Remove the cover of your system. 3. Remove the covering plate from a free PCI bay. (A PCI bay is usually a short white slot found on the motherboard). 4. Insert the PCI1394RAID and make sure it is firmly seated in the slot. 5. Using a #6-32 x 1/4 long screw (usually holding the black plate in place), secure the card in place. 6. Install the IEEE-1394 cables. The PCI1394RAID has 1 internal and 3 external IEEE connectors. There are 2 types of IEEE-1394 cables that can be attached to these connectors. One is a 6-to-6 pin cable (usually used by storage like hard drives and CDR/W), and the other is a 6-to-4 pin connector (usually used for a DV camcorder). The IEEE-1394 topology enables both the branching and daisy-chaining of nodes up

2 to 63 devices can be connected and there are no termination problems that need to be cared for, simply connect the devices you wish to use. Note: The internal 1394 connector J4 and external connector J1 share the same Firewire port. DO NOT connect devices to both of them simultaneously. 7. Install the IDE cables. Review your IDE drive jumper settings (Master, Slave or cable select. We recommend you change to cable slect setting if all your drives support ATA100 cables). Connect the devices to the PCI1394RAID. Make sure the 80 pin ATA100 IDE cable s direction is correct (Pin 1 of cable to pin 1 of devices and IDE1394RAID). Each connector should be attached to the correct IDE devices and the PCI1394RAID. Unlike the 40 pin IDE cable, the ATA 100 IDE cable cannot be swapped among its 3 connectors. Connect the blue connector to the PCI1394RAID. Connect the black connector to the Master IDE drive. Connect the grey connector to the Slave IDE drive. 8. Put the cover of your system back on. 9. Turn on the power of your computer and periherals. 10. Configure the IDE RAID Modes. After installing the PCI1394RAID, you should run the BIOS setup utility to configure your hard drive to the proper RAID modes. RAID Modes Non-RAID Mode (Single Disk Mode) This mode is the Single Disk mode. Each disk drive will be treated as one disk volume in the operating system. Striping (RAID 0) Stripping will read and write sectors of data interleave between multiple drives. When any disk member fails, it affects the entire array. Performance is better than a single drive since the workload is balanced between the array members. This array type is for high performance systems. Identical drives are recommended, but not necessary (if the sizes differ it will truncate the bigger drive so the sizes match which will cause a waste). This is recommended for efficiency in performance as well as data storage. The disk array capability is equal to the number of drive members times the smallest member capacity. Write data Streams...4, 3, 2, : : 2 4 : : Stripe member 1 Stripe member 2 Read data Streams...4, 3, 2, 1

3 Mirroring (RAID 1) Mirroring will write duplicate data on to a pair of drives while its reads are performed in parallel. The RAID controller performs reads using advanced data handling techniques that distribute the workload in a more efficient manner than using a single drive. When a read request is made, the RAID controller selects the drive positioned closest to the requested data then looks to the idle drive to perform the next read access. If one of the mirrored drives suffers a mechanical error or did not respond, the remaining drive will continue to function. Write data Streams...4, 3, 2, Mirror member 1 (original) 1 2 Read data Streams...4, 3, 2, 1 Mirror member 2 (mirror) Striping/Mirroring (RAID 0+1) This is a combination of both above array types. It can increase performance by reading and writing data in parallel while protecting data with duplication. A minimum of 3 drives need to be installed. With a four-drive disk array, two pairs of drives are stripped. Each pair mirrors the data on the other pair of stripped drives and the data capacity dedicated for redundancy. Configuring RAID Modes BIOS Setup Utility The RAID modes will be configured in the BIOS setup utility of the RAID controller. To start the BIOS setup utility, turn on the system power, the RAID controller BIOS screen will be displayed for a brief period when it scans the IDE drives. During this time, the BIOS setup utility is accessible by pressing the <Ctrl> and the letter <H> key at the same time. Easy Steps to Configure RAID Modes 1. Create RAID a) Array Mode i) Stripping (RAID 0) for Performance ii) Mirror (RAID 1) for Security iii) Stripping + Mirror (RAID 0+1) iv) Span (JBOD) b) Select Disk Drives. Each array will be treated as a single disk volume by operating systems. A stripping array needs 2 physical disks. A stripping array needs 2 physical disks. A mirror array needs 2 disks (or 2 stripping pairs if RAID 0+1). c) Block size. This parameter is only available for stripping mode. It defines how

4 many Kilobytes will be used as a unit for stripping. The default value is 64KBytes. d) Start creating process. Set the RAID modes and save the information to each disk. After finished this step, the added data on each single disk will be erased. Note: To set a Stripping + Mirror array (RAID 0+1), perform the following steps: i) Create 2 stripping arrays by creating a Stripping RAID function ii) Make these 2 stripping arrays mirror mode by creating a RAID 0+1 function. 2. Delete RAID. After an array is deleted, each disk will work in single mode instead of array mode. The data on the array will be lost. 3. Duplicate Mirror disk. This function supports mirror mode only. It is used to copy the entire data from source disk to mirror disk in a mirror array. After duplicating the mirror disk, the mirror array then has the same data in each disk. This function can be used to rebuild a mirror disk when one of the disks in a mirror array fails. 4. Create spare disk. A spare disk is a disk that will take over the failed drive in a mirror array automatically. This disk can be assigned to a mirror array by this function. 5. Removing the spare disk. This function is used to remove the spare disk from a mirror array. 6. Setting the drive mode. This function is used to set transfer modes for each physical disk. The transfer mode can be detected by the BIOS automatically in general case. However, you can change to othr mode if you have any compatibility problems. IEEE-1394 Driver Installation The PCI1394RAID is supported by the leading operating systems on PCI bus based systems. If the driver has not been properly installed please check the following: 1. Make sure the host adapter is properly installed and the device is correctly connected to the adapter. Double check that the cable between the adapter and the device is correctly attached. And also check that the jump setting on the drive is correct (UDMA/33) or that the connectors are connected properly to the correct devices (UDMS/66/100).

12 2. Make sure that the power cable is properly attached to each drive and is in turn attached to the RAID controller. If the driver has been properly installed and you still cannot access the hard disk drive (array) attached to the RAID controller, the hard disk drive (array) may not have been partitioned and formatted yet. You may need to partition and format it. If you still cannot determine the source of the error, contact you dealer for technical support. Frequently Asked Questions Q: Can I use the UDMA/66, or UDMA/33 hard drives for an array? A: Yes. The RAID Controller is backwards compatible. Q: I created an array with four 30GB drives in Win98, why does the FDISK only show 51GB instead of 120GB? A: You must simply ignore the message shown by FDISK and continue to create the partition with the entire disk. After formatting the array all 120GB are fully accessable. Q: Can I use ATAPI devices on the RAID Controller? A: No. The RAID Controller driver does NOT support ATAPI devices (e.g. CD ROM, MO...), please connect these devices to the motherboard IDE ports instead. Q: Can I add a drive to the RAID controller via hot-swap and online-expanding the array size? A: No. The RAID Controller does NOT support on-line expansion features. Q: Can I use an array created by the other controller of the other vendors on this RAID Controller? A: No. The settings of the RAID modes may differ. You should reinstall the array instead. Please note that the reinstallation will cause a data loss on that array! Q: Can I use an array created by the same model of this RAID Controller? A: Yes. Q: How can I low level format my hard drive if it has a problem? A: DO NOT DO THIS! Low level formatting IDE drives is unnecessary and generally does not solve the problem. Errors such as bad sectors are best remedied by completely replacing the drive from the vendor. Q: Do I have to use the disk manager software on my disk array in order to access the full storage capacity of drives? A: No. Your hard drives attached to the RAID controller are already fully addressable by your OS. It does not need any help from the disk manager software.
