2 Command Zone Diagnostics (CZD) Command Zone Diagnostics (CZD) is a tool used to assist in troubleshooting the Command Zone system. The Command Zone system uses inputs, outputs, and communications for control. System inputs and outputs can be monitored using CZD. All that is required is CZD software installed on a PC and a Pierce serial interface cable (RS232 cable) or (USB) to connect to the truck. To open Command Zone Diagnostics locate the (BUG) icon on your computer and double click. 3 Menu Bar The menu bar is located at the top of the CZD window. Various program functions can be accessed through the menu bar. Menus File Online/Offline command and exit. View Version info search truck information, Module Bar, Task Bar, Comm. Center and Full Screen. Version info is helpful in determining what version of program is programmed into the vehicle. Options Pause Update, Silence Alarm, Open Module With Truck In, Use Coupled Outputs As One, View Meters In Hex. Window normal window operation (e.g. Tile, Cascade, etc.) Help shortcut keys, I/O Point Key about CZD Online/Offline Button When opened, CZD will be online (provided all cables are connected, power is on and no other programs that use the serial port (CZ Flasher) are opened). When the Command Zone Diagnostics program is online, it can communicate with the Control Module. When the program is offline, there is no communication with the Control Module. 4 Module list area The module list area is used to display all system modules detected by the Command Zone system. Loss of communications between the truck and the computer will cause the list to be blank. In case a particular module is not listed, although one or more others are, there is a communication loss between the Control Module and the unlisted module Pierce Manufacturing Inc. 5 Taskbar The taskbar is located at the bottom of the CZD window. It shows the status of CZD (e.g. Online or Offline) and which modules are opened (indicated by a button, labeled with the module name/number) placed on the taskbar. 6 Module Views To examine information about a module, click on the module name in the module list. This will open a diagnostic screen for that module. General information regarding input and output types and states is consistent for all diagnostic screens. Diagnostic screen layouts differs slightly, depending upon module type. The following items are common to modules of any type: The information in the white box at the right side of each module displays the predetermined programming for that output. This information is identical to the option and circuit # columns on the I/O sheets. Some Command Zone systems may display additional information. The additional configuration information is: DIS - Input/output is disabled (not used) BAT - Input when signal is battery voltage GND - Input when signal is ground 2007 Pierce Manufacturing Inc. 7 Power Module Example The number in the vertical bar displays the percentage of pulse-width modulating for that output. A value of 100 equals totally on and a 0 value equals off. The Amps bar shows the approximate current draw as well as the current limit of the corresponding output. (See figure below). Coupled and warning information is displayed underneath the Amps bar. Coupled 8 means that output 7 will activate / deactivate with the output showing the coupled 8 message. (See figure at right). The warning information is defined as follows: o Over Current The system can only detect this condition if the output status is on. NOTE: This warning may also be displayed if supply voltage is not present on the BATTERY pins of the power module. o Short to Bat Short to battery. The system can only detect this condition if the output status is off. o Short to Gnd Short to ground. The system can only detect this condition if the output status is on. o Open No connection or open. The system can only detect this condition if the output status is off. 12 Opening Multiple Modules for Diagnostics To examine multiple modules at the same time, click on the module names in the module list. This will open a diagnostic screen for each module. The diagnostic screens can then be resized and arranged to suit your work requirements. Only four modules may be opened at any time. NOTE: The more modules that are open the slower the response time CZD will have when troubleshooting. This means that a switch may have to be held on a little longer (1 sec vs ¼ sec) in order to see it functioning in CZD. How Diagnostics Work For You The Command Zone Diagnostics program lets you monitor what the Command Zone system is doing. For example, if a roof light is not working, check which module activates the light. To do this, search CZD for the information or look on the trucks I/O sheets. To search CZD for the information click on the View menu and select Search Truck Info. A window will appear with a progression bar as the information is loaded into CZD. When the information is loaded a search query can be entered. Search queries on the circuit number, name, or all items (e.g. NFPA Roof Lights, or Headlight Switch or 1630) may be entered. An all items search is done by not entering any search criteria in the search field. Find the item in the search results and then open the module that corresponds to that item. The search results can be sorted to further assist in finding an item. Click 2007 Pierce Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved 1-12

13 on the column heading to sort the items alphabetically or numerically depending on the column heading chosen. (e.g. Clicking the module type column header will sort by module type alphabetically in ascending order, clicking this heading again will sort the list in descending order. The arrow in the column heading will point down for descending and up for ascending order. 14 COMMAND ZONE FLASHER The Command Zone Flasher program is used to load new or updated code into a Control Module. This application runs on a laptop and requires a serial connection to the truck s Control Module. The Command Zone Flasher program looks like this when it is opened. 15 The Button Bar: There are five buttons on the button bar: Pause, Stop, Settings, Send To Palm and About. The Pause button will temperarly pause the sending of a CZ program file. The Stop button will stop any process that is occuring. A pop up box will ask if you really want to stop the process. The Settings button is for changing the COM Port settings. The Send To Palm button will send a CZ file to a Palm Pilot.The Palm Pilot can then transfer the file to the control module using Command Zone Flasher 5.0. The Palm feature is only available for use at Pierce Manufacturing. The About button displays a dialog with version information Pierce Manufacturing Inc. All Rights Reserved 1-15

16 Update Truck Button The Update Truck button is for loading new programs into the Control Module. Pressing the Update Truck button will bring up a dialog box. Select the program file that is specific to the vehicle changes being made. Pierce Customer Service typically sends this file to the dealer/customer via . Once the file is selected the update process begins. (Pierce recommends that the file is NOT loaded from a floppy disk. Transfer the file to the computer hard drive and then load the file). Once the update process is complete the message at the bottom of the window will read Update Successful. If there is an error updating the truck, Update Failed will be displayed. UUWARNING: DO NOT TURN THE TRUCK OFF OR DISCONNECT THE POWER TO THE CONTROL MODULE ANYTIME DURING THIS PROCESS!
