Chapter 1 Introduction Description The Intermec Printer Network Manager is a free software tool that runs under most present Microsoft Windows operating systems. It is delivered with all printers on the Printer Companion CD. The purpose of the Intermec Printer Network Manager is to remotely manage, supervise, and control Intermec printers connected to an Ethernet network. Full functionality requires that the printer is fitted with an EasyLAN 100i internal interface board. The Intermec Printer Network Manager provides a powerful tool that enables the printers to send real-time alerts in case of problems such as Out-of-paper, Head lifted, or Out-ofribbon. Alerts can be forwarded to any -enabled device, such as system, pager, cellular phone, or SMS. The Intermec Printer Network Manager will give the network administrator: Simple management of all printers from a single location. Easy overview and access to all printers on the network. A tool for treating printers as functional groups. Easy to use and administrate large printer populations. Alerts in real time, which minimize printer downtime. Statistics on printer errors. Printer settings can be changed using the printer s home page. There are also facilities for communicating with the printer using Telnet and FTP. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 2

Creating Groups Chapter 4 Naming the Printers During the initial setup, the local subnet was scanned for Advanced EasyLAN = EasyLAN 100i Standard EasyLAN = EasyLAN 10 and EasyLAN Wireless printers. All printers found will appear under the Advanced EasyLAN or "Standard EasyLAN tabs in the Configuration Console window. If you want to include printers with IP addresses outside the local subnet, you must specify more or wider IP address ranges in the Settings/Printer Scan settings menu and initiate a new scan by clicking the Scan network button in the Toolbar. Newly found printers are indicated by an exclamation mark (!), whereas printers that may have been detected earlier, but are no longer found, are indicated by a question mark (?). There are at least three directories in the list. Add group is used to create a new group. Un-grouped is a list of printers that do not belong to any group (yet). The third group you did create yourself during the startup (see Chapter 3). In the example, it is called SHIPPING. In the rest of this chapter, we will only deal with printers and groups under the Advanced EasyLAN tab. Standard EasyLAN printers are only shown as information. Let us assume that we are the network managers of a small company network. The company has five network-connected printers, two in the goods reception and three in the shipping department. Because the departments are located in each end of a long building, there is one administrator for each department. The administrator takes care of out-of-paper and out-of-ribbon conditions, clears various types of errors etc., so the company does not have to train everybody how to do it. The list of un-grouped printers will properly have incomprehensible names, so we will start by giving them more fitting names and descriptions. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 20

Chapter 4 Creating Groups Naming the Printers, cont. The name and the description are only stored in the Intermec Printer Network Server s memory and are not downloaded to the printers themselves. You can change name and/or description anytime. Click the Advanced EasyLAN tab. Select a printer in the left-hand pane. Then click the name or description in the right-hand pane. A small button will appear at the right side of the line. Click the button and type the desired name or description in the dialog box. Type the new text here! In our example, we will name the printers as follows: Airline Inspection Approval Inventory Labeling Mail Truck Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 21

Chapter 4 Creating Groups Creating a New Group Now, it is time to create the second group ( Reception ). Click the Add Group directory. You will recognize the Add Group dialog box from the Startup in Chapter 3. Fill out the fields as follows and click OK. Now you can change the group properties, so they suit this group. In this case, we only add the address to the group administrator. If you need, you can change the properties for any group or alert, as explained in Chapter 5. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 22

Chapter 4 Creating Groups Moving Printers to Groups Hint! Use the right-hand mouse button to: Scan printer Rename printer Move printer Delete printer Edit group Scan group Download settings Add group Delete Group Delete all printers in Group Now, we will move the printers to their respective groups so as to create a good overview of the network. In this case, it is a very small network, but for larger networks in big corporations with local offices in many states or countries, it is essential to organize the network in an orderly manner. You can move a printer to a group by the standard Windows drag-and-drop method, by clicking the Move Printer command in the Edit menu, or by clicking the printer with the right-hand mouse button. In the two latter cases, a dialog box will appear where you can choose to which group you want to move the printer. Regardless of which method you choose, we recommend that you organize the printers in this example as follows: To read the properties of a printer, click it and read the information in the right-hand pane. You will need to scroll the pane or resize the window to be able to see all the information. Only the first two lines can be changed in the Intermec Printer Network Manager, the rest must be changed via the printer s home page. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 23

Chapter 4 Creating Groups Download Settings Alerts do not work before you have downloaded the SNMP settings to the printers. Click a group with the right-hand mouse button and select Download settings (alternatively, select SNMP settings...) in the Settings menu. A dialog box appears: In the Settings to download pane, you can only change the first two lines, whereas the remainder are read-only: SNMP trap address is by default the IP address of the server.. You can also use a broadcast address ( ) if the server is located on the same subnet as the printers. Read/write community is a password (by default pass ). Change it to a more secure password if needed. Before download, you can check the printers for incompatible settings. Click the Check printers button. Depending on the circumstances, click the appropriate button. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 24

Chapter 4 Creating Groups Download Settings, cont. A more or less extensive list will show the error found and give recommendations on how to fix them. You will probably need to scroll or resize the window to be able to read the list. By clicking an error line, you can get a dialog box where you can read about the error more easily: In the Printer SNMP settings window, click the Download settings to fix all errors. Confirm that you want to proceed by clicking the Yes button. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 25

Chapter 4 Creating Groups Download Settings, cont. A dialog box shows the progress of the downloading. When you have downloaded the SNMP settings to all printers (groups), you have the basic functions of the Intermec Printer Network Manager running, that is... Alerts will be listed in the Configuration console. Alert s are sent. Alerts are logged in a log file. An obvious requisite is that the facility in question is enabled. In Chapter 5, some more advanced features will be explained together with a comprehensive overview of the Intermec Printer Network Manager. Intermec Printer Network Manager v1.1 User s Guide 26

Chapter 5 Program Overview Configuration Console The Configuration Console and its panes can be resized or scrolled to allow reading all the information. 32 Chapter 5 Program Overview Statistics Menu The Statistics Menu has two commands: Statistics... Shows graphically either the alerts per group, or the alerts for the ten printers that have the most frequent alerts, for example: Prerequisites are that there is an alert log file and that the error alerts are enabled. The same window is produced by the Statistics button in the Toolbar. Log file... The log file lists the alerts shown in Alert log pane as a text file (Notepad), where the fields are separated by semicolons. This makes it easy to import the log file to, for example, MS Excel, where it can be presented in a customized format. Here is an example of a log file: Ok; :23:39;SHIPPING;MAIL; ;00:10:40:00:36:07;Setup Mode;; Ok; :38:15;SHIPPING;MAIL; ;00:10:40:00:36:07;Head lifted;; Ok; :41:29;SHIPPING;MAIL; ;00:10:40:00:36:07;Out of paper;; Ok; :47:12;SHIPPING;MAIL; ;00:10:40:00:36:07;Out of ribbon;; Syntax: Status;Date_time;Group;Printer name;ip address;mac address;alert name;reserved;reserved Status can be Ok or Not ok.
