1 Application Note Renesas Synergy Platform USBX TM CDC ACM (Device) R30AN0237EU0109 Rev.1.09 Introduction The goal of this application note is to demonstrate the USB device connectivity on the DK-S3A7 (v2.0), DK-S7G2 (v3.0), SK-S7G2 (v2.0), PE-HMI1 (v1.1), and PK-S5D9 (v1.0) product boards as an example, based on the USBX Communications Class Device (CDC) Abstract Control Model (ACM) device class. It describes all the necessary steps in using the Renesas Synergy Platform, including an example application in the Renesas Synergy e 2 studio ISDE, and running that application on the target board. The application example shows the use of a USB communications device class as a serial communications device connected through a serial port (COM port) on a PC. The application also demonstrates how the following key elements work together in a typical design: ThreadX RTOS, USBX device class, USBX device driver for the Renesas Synergy Platform, and a sample USBX CDC ACM device application. This application note assumes that you have successfully installed the Renesas Synergy e 2 studio ISDE on your computer, successfully configured the DK-S3A7, SK-S7G2, DK-S7G2, PE-HMI1, or PK-S5D9 board, are working with the J-Link debugger (perhaps by first doing the Blinky demonstration example available on all Renesas Synergy boards), and have a common terminal emulation program (such as Tera Term) running on your PC. Familiarity with the overall layout of the Renesas Synergy e 2 studio ISDE windows is also helpful because the steps below are less detailed than the steps in the Blinky project and they don't illustrate each window or command location used in each step. Installed Software The required software applications to be installed before continuing are: e 2 studio ISDE v5.3.1 or greater or IAR EW for Synergy v or greater Synergy Software Platform (SSP) v Contents 1. Connecting to the Board Importing the Project into e 2 studio Application Features Appendix Connecting to the Board This section describes how to connect the board to power, the J-Link debugger to the PC, the board to the PC USB port, and how to run the debug application to see it in action. To connect to the board: 1. Refer to the Quick Start Guide for DK-S3A7, PE-HMII, DK-S7G2, or SK-S7G2 for setting up the power connection and the J-link debugger connection from your PC to the JTAG connector on the target board. 2. For DK-S3A7, turn on the switch 5 (USBF) from S6. This is needed to activate the USB port, which is needed in this project. 3. Connect the board to your PC using a USB-to-Micro USB cable connected to the USB Device micro-b port on the target board, as shown in Figure 1.1. R30AN0237EU0109 Rev.1.09 Page 1 of 8
2 2. Importing the Project into e 2 studio Figure 1.1 Connecting to the board Refer to the "Synergy Project Import Guide" (r11an0023eu0116-synergy-ssp-import-guide.pdf) for instructions on importing the project into e2 studio and building/running the project. Note: You need to select the USBX_CDCACM_Device Debug GDB Hardware Debugging configuration for debugging. 3. Application Features This section describes the key features of the USB CDC/ACM (device) demo application and the steps needed to run the application. This application demonstrates USB connectivity through these two functions: The host PC recognizes the DK-S3A7, SK-S7G2, DK-S7G2, PE-HMI1, or PK-S5D9 board as a serial communication device (COM port) The simple demo application receives the character from terminal software (for example, Tera Term) on the PC and echoes back the character with string abcdef attached to it, to the PC. This USB connection is for a standard CDC/ACM device, which requires a driver file (.ini) to operate. 32-bit and 64-bit versions of these files can be found in the Appendix at the end of this document. To run this application: 1. Create the two files named in the appendix to a folder on your PC and copy/paste the contents into each of the files. The CDC/ACM device shows up in the Device Manager of your PC under Universal Serial Bus Controller group as an Unknown Device. 2. Right-click on this device and select Update Driver Software. 3. When prompted for the location of the drivers, browse to the location of the two files you created in the previous step. Once the driver is updated, a new COM device shows up in the Device Manager. 4. Use a terminal program to open that COM device. 5. The device responds with abcdef if a key is pressed on the keyboard the key pressed is echoed back with abcdef attached to it. 6. Click Terminate button to close the debugger.
