Tioli License Manager proides the following benefits: Consolidation of information about products installed and software usage The capability to compare the figures for procured, installed, and used licenses The capability to enforce licensing agreements Maintenance of historical software usage information and the proision of reports to assist in forward planning for license needs Realtime reporting of software and license usage information Ability to export reports to a standard XML interface A method of metering software usage een for products that hae no license requirement Automatic generation of alerts when license usage reaches a defined leel A flexible architecture that enables you to scale the installation to fit your license management needs A flexible method of defining rules for license allocation, including the facility to assign pools of licenses to specific users, nodes, and groups of nodes Security of confidential information ensured by the maintenance of security profiles for access to the Web interface, and by the encryption of data during transmission between the administration and runtime serers Copyright IBM Corp. 2001,

Components Components Any Tioli License Manager installation has the following components: Tioli License Manager agent A license management agent must be deployed on each customer node that is to be monitored by Tioli License Manager. Each agent has the following functions: Performing an inentory of the software installed on the node and forwards this information to the runtime serer Detecting the starting or stopping of a software product and communicates this information to the runtime serer so that a license can be assigned or released You can set the agent to automatically apply any upgrades that are aailable on the runtime serer. Tioli License Manager runtime serer A Tioli License Manager installation has at least one runtime serer and can hae seeral. Each runtime serer proides the following facilities: A repository for information about the software installed on the agents that are managed by the serer The capability to assign and release the licenses that are assigned to the serer according to the rules defined for each set of licenses The capability to generate and send s to proide a notification about eents that hae occurred on the serer or its agents A Web interface that can be used to deploy the agents to nodes that are to be monitored and to produce realtime reports of license usage for software running on the managed agents Tioli License Manager administration serer A Tioli License Manager installation has a single administration serer. It proides the following facilities: A central repository of product, license agreement, license usage, and customer information A Web interface that can be used to perform license management and administration tasks and to produce historical reports of license usage oer time Figure 1 on page 3 shows the basic Tioli License Manager structure: a single central administration serer, a runtime serer, and multiple agents. 2 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Components Administration Serer DBMS Runtime Serer DBMS Agents Figure 1. Structural relationship of Tioli License Manager components You can expand this structure, adding more runtime serers on different machines to improe performance in an enironment where there are many agents. You can also add diisions within which agents can be grouped so that multiple agents can be selected as a single entity. For example, you can use diisions to limit the aailability of licenses to the nodes that are monitored by agents within a specified diision. There is always only one administration serer, which maintains the central knowledge-base of product, license, and user information in an associated DB2 database. The administration serer can be used to manage the licensing needs of multiple customers or can be dedicated to a single customer. In all Tioli License Manager installations, the runtime serers and agents must be assigned to a customer. In a self-managed scenario, there is normally only one customer to which all components belong. A serice proider, managing the licenses of multiple customers, defines a separate structure of runtime serers and agents for each customer. Runtime serers cannot be shared between customers. The management of the Tioli License Manager components, the definition of the license management rules, and the management of eents that occur during monitoring are the responsibility of Tioli License Manager administrators assigned to the customer. For information on defining the structure of your Tioli License Manager installation, see Chapter 4, Managing a customer infrastructure, on page 23. For information on defining customers and administrators, see Chapter 3, Managing customers and administrators, on page 15. Chapter 1. Oeriew 3

Managing software information Managing software product information Tioli License Manager maintains a master catalog where details of all the products that can be monitored by Tioli License Manager are stored. This catalog resides on the administration serer and a copy of changes made to it are periodically downloaded to each runtime serer. The master catalog is based on a ersion of the Tioli signatures file. An initial master catalog is installed on the administration serer machine. You can add entries to the catalog, using information from the following sources: The unknown files table This table is compiled from information collected by the agents about applications that started but could not be monitored because they were not in the catalog. The catalog manager allows you to add these files to the catalog by creating new catalog entries or by assigning files to existing entries. The IBM catalog Like the master catalog, the IBM catalog is based on a ersion of the Tioli signatures file. You can use the catalog manager to merge this file with the master catalog when you receie a new ersion from IBM. In addition to the copy of the master catalog, each runtime serer has a runtime catalog. This catalog is a subset of the master catalog. It only includes those entries from the master catalog that hae licenses defined or that relate to products that hae been discoered running on nodes by agents that are assigned to the serer. For more information about catalogs, unknown files, and using the catalog manager, see Chapter 8, Managing product information, on page 91. Administering licenses and metering software use You can use Tioli License Manager to enforce the conditions of procured licenses, to meter the usage of software products by recording and reporting their presence and leels of usage on monitored nodes, or to do both of these. Administration of licenses and metering of software depends on the license pools that exist for each product. If you hae procured licenses and want to enforce their conditions, you can define license pools to reflect the terms and conditions of the licenses. If you only want to track the usage of software products, you can use the default license settings proided with Tioli License Manager. The information specified for a license pool includes the number of licenses aailable, any limitations on the aailability of the license pools to specified users and nodes, and rules that control allocation of licenses when the limit is reached. You can define a license pool to enforce an existing license agreement or you can use a default license pool to simply monitor the usage of software, without applying any limits. By default, license pools are aailable to all alid users on the monitored nodes. Howeer, you can specify that a license pool is aailable only to selected users or only on selected monitored nodes. For more information about defining license pools, see Chapter 5, Managing software entitlement and license pool details, on page IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Administering and metering You define license pools on the administration serer, and they are automatically deployed to the appropriate runtime serers. The license pool for a product is accessed when the agent communicates to the runtime serer that a monitored application has started. Aailability is checked, and the license is allocated or refused accordingly. When the application closes, the agent communicates with the runtime serer, and the license is released. Reporting Tioli License Manager proides both realtime and historical reporting. Eent management You can obtain realtime reports on the status of software usage on a specific runtime serer by accessing the serer Web pages with a suitable browser. Historical reports of inentory and software usage information are aailable on the administration serer. Tioli License Manager includes a set of preconfigured reports for the analysis of collected software usage and inentory data. For more information about reporting, see Chapter 6, Reporting software usage information, on page 59 and Chapter 7, Managing and reporting inentory information, on page 83. The eent management component can identify eents that require the attention of the system administrator and forward them to an external system. Eents are generated on the administration serer and on each runtime serer. These include eents regarding the state of the license pools. For example, an eent is generated if the number of licenses in use for a pool has reached the specified threshold or if the full entitlement is used. The eent management component is able to determine that an agent is either down or has been uninstalled and can generate and forward an to alert the person responsible. You can specify which administrators are to receie notifications. For more information about eent management, see the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide. Logs and support for problem determination Tioli License Manager proides a trace serice on the administration serer and on all runtime serers. This serice allows you to trace all actiities generated by Tioli License Manager. You can determine the leel of detail you record by setting a trace leel on each serer. Depending on the trace leel you select, the trace serice records details of errors, operations, data moement, and processes. For more information about problem soling, see the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide. Chapter 1. Oeriew 5

Chapter 2. Getting started on the Web interfaces Browser leel and settings The aim of this chapter is to help you to start using the Tioli License Manager Web interfaces. The main Web interface is on the administration serer. Using this interface, you can request historical reports and perform Tioli License Manager system definition and license maintenance tasks. Web interfaces are also proided on each runtime serer. You can use these interfaces to request realtime reports and to deploy agents. This chapter proides the following information: Instructions for logging on to the administration serer. See Accessing the administration serer on page 8. Instructions for logging on to a runtime serer. See Accessing a runtime serer on page 9. A description of the components of the Web interface, including general information that is releant to all Web interface tasks. See About the Web interface on page 11. A summary of functions aailable on the interface and where to find them. See Web interface tasks on page 12. Note: When logging on to any Tioli License Manager serer for the first time, you must use the user ID tlmroot. When you are logged on as tlmroot you can create accounts for the administrators who will work on the serer. The initial password for the tlmroot user is system. You should change this on each serer as soon as you hae logged on. See Updating or deleting administration account details on page 19 for instructions on changing the password of an administrator. You access the Web interfaces using a Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. If you are working on the main Web interfaces of the administration and runtime serers, you must hae one of the following browser ersions or a later ersion: Internet Explorer 5.5 Netscape Naigator 6.2 Users accessing the agent registration interface to deploy the Tioli License Manager agent on their machines can use an earlier browser ersion for this task, as follows: Internet Explorer 5.0 or later Netscape Naigator 4.7.x or later Notes: 1. For Sun platforms, you can only use Netscape Naigator. 2. On AIX, Netscape Naigator 4.79 is recommended. Copyright IBM Corp. 2001,

Settings The default browser settings are acceptable in most cases, but you should check that following is true: JaaScript is enabled. The cache is set to automatically refresh. In addition, any programs that preent additional windows from opening automatically must be disabled. Jaa Virtual Machine The Tioli License Manager agent uses a Jaa Virtual Machine. This is normally bundled as part of your Web browser or operating system. Howeer, on some platforms, you may hae to specifically download and install the Jaa Virtual Machine that corresponds to the Web browser you want to use. One platform where this occurs is on Windows NT 4.0 running Internet Explorer 6.0. The symptom you see is that the agent registration starts but then hangs. Go to the Microsoft Web site and download and install the Jaa Virtual Machine. Accessing the administration serer To access the Web interface of the administration serer: 1. Using a browser, access the administration serer logon page. The address of the page is name>:<port>\slmadmin\login. Notes: a. If you are using the default port (80), you do not need to specify the port in the page address. b. If you are using a secure socket layer (SSL) connection, you must specify https instead of http. 2. Type the User Name and Password of a Tioli License Manager administrator and click OK. You can create administrators on the administration serer Web interface when you are logged on as the superuser tlmroot. 23 The Web interface About the Web interface This section aims to help you become familiar with features of the Tioli License Manager Web interface that are common to all tasks. The Web interface consists of the following parts: The portfolio, where you select the task you want to perform The work area, where you supply information and make selections that are needed to complete the task you selected The toolbar, which contains a number of icons representing actions that are aailable within tasks, for example, getting help Figure 2 shows a page on the Tioli License Manager Web interface and indicates the different parts of the interface Figure 2. The parts of the Web interface The portfolio The portfolio shows a list of all the task groups that are aailable on the Web interface. Most task groups include seeral tasks. For example, the Software Usage task group includes the software usage snapshot, trend analysis, and leel analysis reports. When you click a task group, it expands and you can see the indiidual tasks it includes. When you click a task name, the first dialog of the task appears in the work area. The work area The dialogs that you must complete to perform a task appear in the work area of the Web interface. They consist of controls where you must supply or select information, as follows: Text fields that allow you to enter information by typing. These boxes can hae restrictions on the type of characters that can be used. For example, the product name field shown in Figure 2 allows any alphanumeric characters, but an input box that is part of a date would expect a numeric input that can be interpreted as a alid date. Chapter 2. Getting started on the Web interfaces 11

Work area List boxes that allow you to select from a set of possible alues. Lists can be static or dynamic. Static lists show a set of fixed alues. For example, when defining a license pool, you must choose a target type from one of four possible alues. Dynamic lists are those that show alues that are user-defined. For example, a list of diisions includes all the diisions that hae been defined for the selected customer. As dynamic lists can include a large number of items, the list is sometimes truncated to a default maximum of Where it is possible that lists might include more items than this maximum the dialogs proide a form of pre-selection. For example, because the agent list is likely to be long, the Tioli License Manager wizards that include agent selection, allow you to limit selection to selected diisions. The resulting agent list only includes agents for the selected diisions. Generally, static lists allow the selection of a single alue. In a dynamic list you can select multiple items. Radio buttons, which allow you to choose one of a small group of pre-defined options. Note: Any control that is marked with an asterisk (*) is a required field. The toolbar Table 1 lists the toolbar icons that are aailable and action that is taken when you click each icon. Table 1. Toolbar icons and actions Icon Action Toggles between the default iew where the interface is diided between the portfolio and the work area and a iew where the portfolio is hidden. Opens the accessibility help window where you can read about keyboard alternaties for naigating the interface and performing actions. Opens the Tioli License Manager information where you can see product ersion and copyright information. Opens the help window for the current dialog. Web interface tasks Table 2 on page 13 summarizes the tasks that you can perform on the Web interfaces. For each task, the table indicates whether you perform the task on the administration or runtime serer and proides a reference to instructions for performing the task. Note: You can perform most of the tasks by accessing the appropriate serer from any node that has a browser that meets the Tioli License Manager prerequisites. The exception to this is deployment of the agent. This task must be performed from the node where the agent is to be deployed. 12 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Chapter 3. Managing customers and administrators This chapter describes the functions on the administration serer Web interface that allows you to create records for the administrators who will use the Web interfaces and for customers and to assign customers to the administrators. Each customer is the owner of its Tioli License Manager components, license pools, and reports. Wheneer you log on to the administration serer, you must select a customer. The Tioli License Manager components, license pools, and reports that you can work with are those that belong to selected customer. Administrators are the users who can log on to the Web interfaces. On the administration serer, you must define administrators and assign customers to them. When the administrator logs on to the administration serer, the only customers aailable for selection are those that are assigned to the administrator. All customers must hae at least one administrator for administration serer tasks, and might hae seeral, because administrators can hae different leels of access to the administration serer functions. You should also create at least one administrator for each customer on the administration serer. When you hae created a customer and assigned it to an administrator, you can create a monitoring structure for the customer. See Chapter 4, Managing a customer infrastructure, on page 23. The following tasks are described: Creating details of a customer whose site is monitored from the application serer. See Adding customers to the administration serer database on page 16. Changing or deleting the details of a customer. See Updating or deleting customer details on page 16. Creating an account for a Tioli License Manager administrator. 35 Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure This chapter proides instructions for the tasks related to creating and managing the components of a Tioli License Manager installation for a selected customer. The topology has two types of component: Components that form the structure of the Tioli License Manager implementation for a customer. See Defining the monitoring structure for a customer. Components that record demographic information. See Managing demographic information on page 34. You perform these tasks using a browser to access the Web interfaces. See Chapter 2, Getting started on the Web interfaces, on page 7 for information about the tasks aailable on each serer and for instructions on logging on to the administration and runtime serers. All of the components must belong to a customer, whose details hae been recorded in the administration serer database. You are prompted to select the customer you want to work with when you log on to the administration serer. To change the customer during a session, click the Home icon on the tool bar and select a different customer from the list that appears. For instructions for creating a customer, see Adding customers to the administration serer database on page 16. Defining the monitoring structure for a customer In a Tioli License Manager implementation, you must define a monitoring structure for each customer. The structure comprises the following: The runtime serers that hae been installed. These must be registered with the administration serer before they can be used. Agents that you must deploy to nodes that are to be monitored. You must decide on the distribution of agents among the runtime serers in order to make the most efficient use of resources. Diisions that diide agents into logical groupings. Grouping of agents into separate diisions is not obligatory. You can create a single diision and assign all agents to it. Howeer, haing agents grouped makes it possible to define different frequencies of inentory scans for different groups, select groups of agents for reporting, and limit access to license pools to a specific group or groups of agents. The tasks related to the monitoring structure that you can perform on the Web interfaces are: Registering a new runtime serer with the administration serer. See Registering a runtime serer on page 24. Reiewing and updating the runtime serers included in the Tioli License Manager implementation. See Reiewing and changing runtime serers on page 25. Adding new diisions to the topology. See Adding diisions on page 27. Reiewing and updating diisions. See Reiewing and changing diisions on page 28. Copyright IBM Corp. 2001,

Defining monitoring structure Diisions are used to group agents. Each customer implementation must include at least one diision, and in large implementations there can be many. Deploying an agent to a node. See Deploying an agent on a node on page 30. Reiewing the details of deployed agents and deleting agents that are no longer required. See Reiewing and deleting agents on page 32. Registering a runtime serer When you install the runtime serer component on a machine, you must register the new runtime serer on the administration serer before it can be used by agents. To register a runtime serer with the administration serer complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Serers. 2. Click Create. 3. Complete the form with the requested details. 24 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Register a runtime serer Notes: a. The serer name must be exactly the same as the name you specified when you installed the runtime serer component on the machine. b. The password is used to authenticate communications between the runtime serer and the administration serer. If the initial password that is registered on the administration serer is not exactly the same as the password specified when the runtime serer was installed, communications fail. 4. Click Finish. When you submit the serer information, the runtime serer is plugged in to the administration serer and is then ready for use. The serer fails to plug in if the one or more of the following occurs: The serer name does not match the name of any installed serer The serer name identifies a serer that does not belong to the customer you are working with The password does not match the runtime password that was specified when the serer was installed If any of these problems occur, an entry is made in the eent.log file, which is located on the administration serer machine, in the folder: <INSTALL_DIR>\admin\log You can open this log file using any text editor. Reiewing and changing runtime serers Using this function, you select a runtime serer and can then do the following: View the current information for the serer, including a list of the agents that are assigned to it. Change the name, IP address, and port number of the serer. Change the serer password. To reiew and update a runtime serer, complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Serers. 2. Select a serer from the list and click Next. Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure 25

Reiewing a runtime serer The details of the selected serer are displayed. 3. You can change the Name, Address, and Port number fields. Howeer, make any changes with care and be aware of the following: The name must be exactly the same as the serer name specified when the runtime serer was installed on the machine. Therefore, the only change you should make is to correct an error made when the serer was originally registered. The address may be a host name or an IP address depending on the network enironment. You should only change the IP address if it was originally entered wrongly, or if the machine on which the serer is installed has changed its IP address. If you change the port number to anything other than the default (80), and you configure WebSphere Application Serer to receie incoming requests on a different port, you must include the port number in the Web page address when accessing the runtime serer. For example, The address and port fields are used by agents to contact the runtime serer. If you change either of these alues when agents are already deployed, you will hae to redeploy all agents to enable them to contact the runtime serer using the new alues. 4. To sae your changes, click Finish. From this page, you can select the following additional options: Change the password that is used to authenticate communications from this serer. To do this: 26 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Reiewing a runtime serer 1. Click Password. 2. Type the password and then confirm it by retyping it. 3. Click Finish. The Change Password window closes. View a list of the agents that use this serer. To do this: 1. Click Details. 2. If the list of agents extends to more than one page, click the back and forward arrows or type a page number and click Go. Adding diisions Diisions are organizational units within a customer implementation of Tioli License Manager. They are used to group agents. You must create at least one diision for a customer before you can deploy any agents for that customer. Large customers can include seeral diisions. Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure 27

Adding diisions To create a diision, complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Diisions. 2. Click Create. 3. Supply the name and description of the diision. 4. Click Finish. Reiewing and changing diisions You can reiew and change an existing diision, as follows: View the current information for the diision, including a list of the agents that are assigned to it. Change the name and description of the diision. Delete a diision you no longer want to use. If you delete a diision that has agents assigned to it, the agents will also be remoed. To reiew and update a diision, complete the following steps: 28 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Reiewing diisions 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Diisions. 2. Select a diision from the list and click Next. The details of the selected diision are displayed. 3. You can do the following: Make changes to the name and description and then click Finish to sae the changes. Delete the diision by clicking Delete. If any agents are currently assigned to the diision, they will be remoed when the diision is deleted. Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure 29

Reiewing diisions View a list of the agents that are assigned to the diision. To do this, click Details. If the list of agents extends to more than one page, click the back and forward arrows or type a page number and click Go. Deploying an agent on a node Each runtime serer hosts a Web page from which you can download Tioli License Manager agent and install it on a node. This page is not password protected, so you do not need to hae the user name and password of a Tioli License Manager administrator to use it, though you must be logged on as a user with administrator rights to the node. Typically, the Tioli License Manager administrator would contact users and tell them to deploy the agent on their machines. Note: If you are installing the agent on a Windows node, ensure that the Windows Serice Manager Tool is stopped. To deploy an agent on a node, complete the following steps: 1. Log on to the node as a user with administrator rights. If you are not logged on with administrator rights, the registration process will start, but will subsequently fail. 2. Access a runtime serer. 30 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Deploying an agent The address of the page is name>\slmruntime\register. 3. Complete the requested information, as follows: Diision Select the diision to which the agent is to belong from the drop-down list. Serer Select the runtime serer that the agent will use from the drop-down list. This does not need to be the runtime serer from which you are deploying the agent. Note: The drop-down list includes all runtime serers that hae been registered with the administration serer for the selected customer. If the serer you want is not in the list, this may be because you hae installed the component but hae not registered the new serer. Computer Label Type the number on the identifying label of the machine on which the agent is to be deployed. 4. Click Finish. Standard security warnings for downloading from a Web site appear. 5. Accept the security warnings. Note: The number and format of warning panels differs for different browsers. For Netscape Naigator, there are multiple panels, and you must click Grant to accept each warning. For Internet Explorer, there is a single panel, and you must click Yes to accept it. If you do not accept these warnings, the agent will not be deployed. The agent is deployed on the node and started. For information about the files created when the agent is deployed, see the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide. If the deployment is not successful, a message is displayed indicating the reason. See Problem Determination in the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide for details of the possible messages and the actions you can take to resole problems. Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure 31

Deploying an agent Note: There is a delay between the agent starting to monitor the node and information from the agent being aailable on the serers. You must take into account the time delays required for scanning the node and for transferring data to the runtime serer and then to the administration serer. You can set time delay parameters on the administration serer interface. These parameters are held in the system.properties file for the administration serer. Redeploying or upgrading an agent There are some circumstances in which you need to redeploy the agent on a node: You change the serer name or port of the runtime serer after the agent has been deployed or you decide to monitor the node using a different serer or to assign the agent to a different diision. In this case, you should simply follow the deploy procedure again. You do not need to uninstall the agent. A newer ersion of the agent is aailable on the runtime serer with which the agent is registered. In this case, you can use the agent self-update facility. See the Agent chapter in the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide for information about this facility and how to enable it. Reiewing and deleting agents You can use this function to reiew details of the agents that are deployed and to delete agents when they are no longer needed. Note: You do not need to delete the agent before redeploying. The delete agent function is intended for the situation where a node is no longer being monitored. The delete function deletes the record of the agent that is held in the administration serer database. It does not remoe the agent files from the monitored node. To remoe an agent, use the uninstall agent procedure described in the installation chapter of the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide. You do not need to delete the agent before redeploying. The delete function is intended for the situation where a node is no longer being monitored. You should delete the agent record from the database after uninstalling the agent file. The delete function is not aailable if the agent is actie. You can request details of all agents, or you can limit the information displayed, as follows: Include all agents that are assigned to a specified diision Include only a specific agent The resulting report proides you with the following information for each agent that is included: The name, machine label, serial number, and hardware platform of the node where the agent is installed The name and ersion of the operating system running on the machine The IP address of the machine The number of hard disk dries, configured processors, and online processors on the machine The diision to which the agent is assigned The runtime serer that the agent uses 32 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Reiewing agents The date and time of the last inentory scan by this agent The agent status (whether the agent is actie or inactie) To reiew or delete agents, complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Agents. 2. Accept the default to include agents from all diisions or select a diision from the list. 3. Click Next. The list of agents includes all agents or, if you selected a diision, all agents for the selected diision. 4. Accept the default to include all the agents included in the list or select a single agent from the list. 5. Click Next. A page appears showing details of a single agent. Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure 33

Reiewing agents 6. To display details of another agent that is included in the report, click the back and forward arrows or type a page number and click Go. 7. To delete the agent for which details are displayed, click Delete. You are asked to confirm your decision to delete. If you do so, the entry for the agent is remoed from the administration serer database. Note: The purpose of the delete function is to remoe database entries for agents that hae been uninstalled or where the node on which the agent is deployed has been remoed from the monitored network. The delete function is only aailable if the selected agent is inactie. Managing demographic information You can store information in the administration serer database about the customer nodes that are to be monitored and about the users who can start applications on the nodes. Using this information, Tioli License Manager can restrict access to license pools to specified users or nodes. The tasks related to demographic information that you can perform on the Web interface are: Adding new nodes to the administration serer database. See Adding nodes on page 35. Reiewing and updating nodes. See Reiewing and changing nodes on page IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Managing demographics Recording details of the users of monitored applications. See Adding application users on page 38. Changing or deleting the details of an application user. See Changing or deleting user details on page 39. Adding nodes You can use this function to record details of nodes within the customer s network. Note: When an agent is deployed on a node for which there is no entry in the administration serer database, Tioli License Manager automatically creates a new node record. To add a node to the administration serer database, complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Nodes. 2. Click Create. Chapter 4. Managing a customer infrastructure 35

Adding nodes 3. Supply the details of a node that is in the network of the currently selected customer. Note: The Tag, which is also referred to as the computer label, is the unique identifier of the node. It is this alue that the agent deployment process attempts to match when it looks for a node entry in the administration serer database for the target node of the deployment. If it does not find a match, it creates a new entry. 4. Click Finish. The node details are recorded in the administration serer database. The node can now be specified when you set target distribution details for a license pool to limit access to a license pool to specified nodes. You can also select automatically created nodes when distributing a license pool. Reiewing and changing nodes You can use this function to do the following: Change the details of nodes that are recorded on the administration serer database. View information about nodes and the agents that are deployed on them. Delete records for nodes that do not hae an agent deployed. To reiew and update an existing node, complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Topology. When the Topology task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Nodes. 2. Select one of the radio buttons to determine which nodes will be aailable for selection on the next form. 36 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Chapter 7. Managing and reporting inentory information Scheduling inentory scans One of the functions of the agent is to make regular inentories of the products installed on the node it is monitoring. The information collected in the inentory scan is passed to the runtime serer, where the runtime serer identifies those products which hae entries in the master catalog. Only products with entries in the master catalog are passed to the administration serer and stored in the administration serer database. This chapter proides instructions related to the inentory of monitored nodes as follows: Specifying the time interal between inentory scans of monitored nodes. Scheduling inentory scans. A software inentory report, which details the products that hae been discoered on monitored nodes by agent inentory scans. You can produce the report in product or agent order. See Producing a software inentory report on page 85. You perform these tasks using a browser to access the administration serer interface. See Chapter 2, Getting started on the Web interfaces, on page 7 for instructions on logging on. You are prompted to select the customer you want to work with when you log on to the administration serer. To change the customer during a session, click the Home icon on the toolbar and select a different customer from the list that appears. You use this function to schedule the frequency with which inentory data is collected from monitored nodes within a specified diision. Consider the following when you decide on the timing of an inentory scan: It is adisable to create the schedule for scanning well in adance of the time specified for scanning. This will reduce the possibility that the schedule details will not reach all agents within the diision. It is adisable to schedule the scans of different diisions at different times, as this will spread the network instead of concentrating it around one scan time. Before the information is aailable for reporting, it must be transferred to the runtime serer and then to the administration serer. Time delays operate for uploads between the components. These are defined in the system.properties files for each serer. See the IBM Tioli License Manager: System Administrator s Guide for details of the configuration file. Copyright IBM Corp. 2001,

Scheduling scans To schedule inentory updates, complete the following steps: 1. In the portfolio, click Software Inentory. When the Software Inentory task group opens to show a list of tasks, click Scheduling. 2. Select a diision from the drop-down list and click Next. 3. Complete the requested information, as follows: Date Specify the date on which the first inentory scan is to be made using these parameters. Time Specify the time at which the first inentory scan is to be made using these parameters. Note: The time refers to the time in the time zone where the agent is located. Scan frequency Define the regularity of the inentory schedule. If these parameters are to be used for a single inentory scan, select Once. If the parameters are to be used for a regular schedule of inentory scans, select Repeat Each, type a number in the text box, and then select a time 84 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Chapter 8. Managing product information This chapter proides you with information about the use and management of software product information in Tioli License Manager, as follows: How the catalog of product information is used to enable monitoring of software products. See Catalogs and unknown file information How to add new products and change information in the master catalog. See Using the catalog manager to update the master catalog on page 92 Catalogs and unknown file information The Tioli License Manager master catalog contains details of all products that can be monitored by Tioli License Manager. Master catalog The master catalog is a central repository of product information. It is installed on the administration serer. A copy is downloaded to each runtime serer and is periodically refreshed to include new information. The master catalog contains information about all the software components and related files for the products that are to be monitored. An initial master catalog is proided when Tioli License Manager is installed. The Tioli License Manager catalog manager component allows you to add new information to the master catalog. There are two sources of new information: the unknown file table, which contains entries for all applications that were detected by agents, but that were not already in the master catalog, and new ersions of the IBM catalog, which you can merge with the master catalog. Each ersion of the IBM catalog is based on a Tioli signatures file. Runtime catalog A runtime catalog is created automatically on each runtime serer. It is a subset of the master catalog which contains information about only those products that are installed on the nodes that are managed by the runtime serer. A copy of the runtime catalog is downloaded to each node where the agent is installed. These copies are periodically refreshed to include new information added to the runtime catalog on the runtime serer. New entries are added to the runtime catalog when the runtime serer receies license entitlement information from the administration serer and when the unknown file table identifies an application, which has been discoered on a monitored node, that is in the master catalog but not in the runtime catalog. Unknown file table and unknown file lists The unknown file table and unknown file lists proide a way of identifying software that is not included in the runtime catalog and which may not be in the master catalog. The agent, running on a node, identifies any applications that are not included in the runtime catalog and adds them to the unknown file list. The lists compiled by all the agents are communicated to the runtime serer where they are merged to form the unknown file table. The information in the table is used to identify entries in the master catalog which should be added to the runtime catalog. Unknown file tables from the runtime serers are periodically Copyright IBM Corp. 2001,

Catalogs and unknown files uploaded to the administration serer, where they are merged to form a single unknown file table. You can add the unknown files to the master catalog using the catalog manager. Using the catalog manager to update the master catalog The catalog manager is a standalone tool that you can use to expand and make changes to the master catalog. To use it, you must extract the catalog and unknown file table from the administration serer database. You can then perform a number of tasks, the most frequent of which is adding the unknown files, discoered by the agents, to the master catalog. When you hae finished making changes, you must reimport the catalog to the administration serer database. To use the catalog manager, perform the following steps: 1. Open the Tioli License Manager command line interface (CLI). On Windows Click Start > IBM Software License Manager > Admin CLI. On AIX a. Open a shell window and change to the directory: <INSTALL_DIR>/admin/cli b. Enter the command:../tlmcli 2. At the command line, type: expcat A script runs to extract the master catalog and unknown file table to the file catalog.dat in the <INSTALL_DIR>/admin/cli folder. 3. Launch the catalog manager. On Windows Click Start>Programs>Tioli License Manager>Catalog Manager. On AIX a. Open a shell window and change to the directory: <INSTALL_DIR>/catmgr b. Enter the command:../catman 92 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Updating the master catalog 4. Naigate to the folder where the expcat script stored the catalog files, select catalog.dat, and click Open. Catalog manager loads the file and displays the following screen. The screen shows the contents of the catalog in terms of total numbers of products, modules and endors. 5. Click OK, and the catalog manager function selection screen is displayed. Chapter 8. Managing product information 93

Updating the master catalog 6. Choose the program functions to make the changes you require and follow the instructions in the following sections: Adding unknown files to the master catalog. Modifying entries in the master catalog on page 98. Importing the IBM catalog on page When you hae completed your changes, click Sae to File, and sae the catalog so that it oerwrites the extracted catalog.dat file in the <INSTALL_DIR>\admin\cli folder. Note: You can change the file under a different name. Howeer, before reimporting the catalog to the Tioli License Manager administration serer database you must rename it, as the impcat command requires a file named catalog.dat. 8. Go to the Tioli License Manager Administration command line interface and enter, impcat to import the updated catalog to the administration serer database. Adding unknown files to the master catalog Using this function, you can iew the entries in the unknown files table that you extracted and determine whether to associate each with an existing catalog entry or to create a new entry. To process the entries in the unknown files table, complete the following steps: 1. In the initial window of the catalog manager, click Unknown Files Manager. 2. Search for the entry in the unknown files list that you want to process, as follows: a. Select a radio button to search by file name or description. b. From the drop-down list, select the platform for which you want to find files. c. You can limit the search to entries where the name or description includes a specific string by typing the string in the text box. d. Click Search. The results of the search are listed in the upper part of the window. 94 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Adding unknown files 3. Select an entry from the list of results. The details of the file you selected are displayed in the lower part of the window. 4. Click Associate. Note: You must attempt to associate the file with an existing entry in the master catalog before you create a new entry. When the entry is first selected, the New button is not aailable. The catalog manager compiles a list of products, currently in the master catalog, that are possible matches for the unknown file you are trying to associate. It compiles the list by identifying all products for which the description contains any of the same words as the description of the unknown Chapter 8. Managing product information 95

Adding unknown files file. 5. Check the list to see if the product that the unknown file belongs to is there. If it is, select it and click OK. If the product is not in the list, you can change the search criteria and search again. To do this, edit the Search field and click Search. If you do not find the product that the unknown file belongs to, click Cancel. When you click OK or Cancel, you return to the preious window. 6. If you selected a product, click OK to associate the file with the product entry in the master catalog. The entry is remoed from the unknown file table. You can now select another entry. 96 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Adding unknown files If you did not find the product that the unknown file belongs to, click New to define a new entry for the master catalog. 7. Supply the information that is missing and edit any fields that need to be changed. Name and Version are required fields. 8. Click Create to return to the preious window. 9. Click OK to add the new entry to the master catalog and remoe the entry from the unknown file table. 10. Select another entry or click Close to exit the Unknown Files Manager. Importing the IBM catalog You use this function to incorporate the changes in a new ersion of the IBM catalog into the master catalog. To merge the IBM catalog with the master catalog, complete the following steps: 1. In the initial window of the catalog manager, click Import IBM Catalog. 2. Naigate to the folder where you stored the new ersion of the IBM catalog. Chapter 8. Managing product information 97

Importing the IBM catalog 3. Select the IBM catalog file and click Open. 4. A message appears to tell you that the import takes seeral minutes. Click OK to continue. The import is completed silently, with no user interaction. When the process is complete the following message appears to summarize the changes that hae been made to the master catalog export file. 5. Click OK. Modifying entries in the master catalog You can use the catalog manager function to make changes to existing entries in the master catalog. The most likely uses for this function are to change incorrect information or add details that were not aailable when the entry was created, for example, the product endor. 98 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide

Modifying entries You can make changes to the list of files associated with the product. Howeer, as the catalog has already been used to monitor software products and to collect usage information, adding or remoing files can result in inconsistencies in monitoring. Therefore, use the function with caution. To make changes to entries in the master catalog, complete the following steps: 1. In the initial window of the catalog manager, click Catalog Manager. 2. From the scrollable list, select a product for which you want to change the catalog entry and click Edit. The fields below the list can help you to find the product you want to edit. You can use the Fast search to moe directly to products that match the characters you specify. You can select a Vendor or Platform to limit the list to the products that match your selection. Chapter 8. Managing product information 99

Modifying entries By default, the list does not include disabled products. Disabled products are products that are not included in the IBM catalog that do not hae any linked executable files. They are not included in any Tioli License Manager reports. If you want to see disabled products, you must select the Show disabled products check box. You can re-enable a product by linking an aailable executable file to it. 3. Change or complete the information in the editable fields. For products that hae been added to the catalog from the IBM Catalog, no fields on this screen are directly editable; all you are allowed to do is to change the linked files, as described below. For all other products, the Name and Version fields are required. 4. If you need to make changes to the linked files, click Add/Remoe. The Linked Modules Manager window appears, showing a list of files currently linked to the product in the Linked Executables list and a list of files that are not linked to any product in the Linkable Executables list. Note: A warning is displayed reminding you that changing the files that are linked to an application may cause discrepancies in monitoring the software usage. 100 IBM Tioli License Manager: License Administrator s Guide
