It lets you quickly resolve help desk and server support issues or stay productive while you work away from your office. You can use pcanywhere to remotely control Windows, Linux, and Mac OS computers. You can also deploy a limited-functionality, single-use host to computers that do not have a host running. You can use Symantec pcanywhere in the following ways: Manage computers remotely Support and maintain servers Transfer files between computers Work from a remote location Symantec pcanywhere lets help desk providers and administrators troubleshoot and quickly resolve computer problems. You can remotely perform diagnostics, check and modify settings, and deploy and install software. Symantec pcanywhere lets administrators connect to servers across the organization to perform routine maintenance. It lets administrators deploy and install software patches and upgrades. Symantec pcanywhere also lets administrators assess network performance and troubleshoot network problems. Symantec pcanywhere lets you connect to your home computer or office computer to quickly get the files that you need. You can perform automatic end-of-day file transfers from one computer to another. You can also exchange multimedia and other files that are too large to send by . Symantec pcanywhere lets you remotely connect to another computer and work as though you are in front of that computer. You can view and edit files. You can run software and print files to a printer at your location or at the host's location. You can also give presentations or demonstrations. What's new in this release The pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 release uses an updated encryption method to secure the host and remote communications and data.

If you are logged on to a Vista/2008 Server computer

8 8 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes About upgrading to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 as a non-administrator user, during the pcanywhere installation you are prompted to enter the administrator credentials. Windows XP restricts users who are assigned to the limited user or guest accounts from installing or uninstalling software, changing system-wide settings, or adding, editing, or deleting user accounts. For optimal performance, log on as a user with administrator rights when running pcanywhere on Windows XP. About upgrading to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 contains updated security and communication enhancements. The new version is not backward-compatible and will not connect to older versions of pcanywhere due to the changed security model. Symantec recommends installing the latest updated, secured 12.5 SP4 version of the product. Symantec will not provide fixes for existing versions of pcanywhere because of known security risks. If you have pcanywhere 11.x or earlier versions of pcanywhere, then you must uninstall the existing version of pcanywhere before you install pcanywhere 12.5 SP4. You can use the scripted or the manual methods to uninstall the current version, before you install 12.5 SP4: To perform scripted and manual uninstall, go to the following topics: See Uninstalling Symantec pcanywhere on page 16. You can use Symantec Packager to create new packages and then deploy them using custom deployment tools. This is optional. See About using Symantec Packager to streamline upgrades on page 11. Note: Previously created Symantec Packager files are not supported in pcanywhere 12.5 SP4. Upgrading from any previous pcanywhere version running on Windows NT is not supported. Upgrading to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Upgrading to 12.5 SP4 preserves existing configuration data, except the encryption settings that will be updated to the new defaults. pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 uses AES encryption to secure communication between the host and remote computer. By default, the AES256 level is set. To upgrade, you must first choose an upgrade method as described in the procedure "To choose an upgrade method", and then follow the instructions in the procedure "To upgrade to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4". To choose an upgrade method 1 Choose one of the following upgrade methods: If you have the CD, go to Step 2. If you have the serial number to download the setup files, go to Step 4. If you do not have the CD or the serial number, send an with the proof of purchase to pcanywhere@symantec.com. After you receive the serial number, go to Step 4. 2 Insert the Symantec pcanywhere CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the installation window does not appear automatically after you insert the pcanywhere CD, run the installation program manually. See Running the setup program manually on page Go the procedure "To upgrade to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4". 4 To download the setup files using the serial number, go to the following URL: 5 Select the local language.

To upgrade to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 1 When the setup detects a previously installed version, the Previous Version Installed panel is displayed. 2 By default, Preserve existing data is selected. Keep the check box selected to preserve the following existing configuration data: Host items Caller items Remote items Option sets AutoTransfer files (must be converted) Serial ID sets Presence of the host user to confirm a remote connection Computers that have access to other computers 3 Click Next. 4 The Preparing Symantec pcanywhere for upgrading message is displayed. 5 In the Welcome panel, click Next. 6 In the License Agreement panel, accept the terms of the license agreement, and then click Next. 7 In the Customer Information panel, type a user name and organization. 8 Click Next. 9 In the Destination Folder panel, do one of the following: To install pcanywhere in the default data directory, click Next. To change the installation directory, click Change. In the Change Current Destination Folder panel, browse to the folder location in which you want to install pcanywhere, and then click OK. Then, in the Destination Folder panel, click Next.

11 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes About using Symantec Packager to streamline upgrades In the ReadytoInstalltheProgram panel, the CreateSymantecpcAnywhere desktop shortcut box is selected by default to create the shortcut on the desktop. If you do not want to create this shortcut on your desktop, uncheck the Create Symantec pcanywhere desktop shortcut box. 11 Click Install. 12 The Installing Symantec pcanywhere panel displays the installation progress. 13 Click Finish when the installation is complete. If your computer requires updates to system files, you are prompted to restart your computer. This step is necessary to ensure proper functionality. See Starting Symantec pcanywhere on page 14. About using Symantec Packager to streamline upgrades Symantec Packager is an administrator tool that lets you create, modify, and build custom installation packages to distribute to target systems. Symantec Packager is available for download from the following location: Symantec Packager helps you streamline the process of upgrading from earlier versions of pcanywhere in the following ways: The product installation requires you to manually uninstall a previous version of the product. Create a custom installation package that includes a custom command to silently uninstall the previous version and all the hotfixes before installing the new product. The product installation requires you to restart the computer to complete the installation process. The product installation does not support preservation of preconfigured product settings. Create a custom installation package for the product installation and configure the package to install in passive or silent mode. Create a custom installation package that includes preconfigured data files containing the settings that you need. 12 12 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes Installing pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Installing pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 This version of pcanywhere includes host, remote control, remote management, and file transfer features. During the installation process, you might be required to restart the computer. If you restart the computer ensure that you log on again using the same credentials. Note: Installation of Symantec pcanywhere is not supported on the encrypted file systems. If you are an administrator and you need assistance with creating, building, and deploying custom installation packages for network installations, see the Symantec pcanywhere Administrator Guide at the following URL: Before you install pcanywhere, ensure that your computer meets the system requirements. To install, you must first choose an installation method as described in the procedure "To choose an installation method", and then follow the instructions in the procedure "To install pcanywhere 12.5 SP4". To choose an installation method 1 Choose one of the following installation methods: If you have the CD, go to Step 2. If you have the serial number to download the setup files, go to Step 4. If you do not have the CD or the serial number, send an with the proof of purchase to pcanywhere@symantec.com. After you receive the serial number, go to Step 4. 2 Insert the Symantec pcanywhere CD into the CD-ROM drive. 13 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes Installing pcanywhere 12.5 SP Select the local language. 6 Enter the serial number, and then click Enter. 7 Follow the on-screen instructions to download the setup files. 8 After you have downloaded the setup files, click Setup.exe. 9 Go to the procedure "To install pcanywhere 12.5 SP4". To install pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 1 In the Symantec pcanywhere window, click Install Symantec pcanywhere. 2 In the Choose Setup Language dialog box, an installation language is selected. The language depends on the locale. To change the language, select a different language from the drop-down list. 3 Click OK. Note that if you install pcanywhere using the msiexec file, the Choose Setup Language dialog box is not displayed. The locale is automatically detected and the language is selected. To choose an installation language, run the following command in the command prompt: msiexec /i <Symantec pcanywhere.msi> /qf TRANSFORMS = LCID.mst. In the command string, LCID represents the language locale ID. 4 In the Welcome panel, click Next. 5 Accept the terms of the license agreement, and then click Next. 6 In the Customer Information panel, type a user name and organization. 7 Click Next. 8 In the Destination Folder panel, do one of the following: To install pcanywhere in the default data directory, click Next. To change the installation directory, click Change. In the Change Current Destination Folder panel, browse to the folder location in which you want to install pcanywhere, and then click OK. Then, in the Destination Folder panel, click Next. 9 In the Ready to Install the Program panel, select the program that you want to place on the desktop as a shortcut. The pcanywhere program icon is placed on the desktop by default. If you do not want to create this shortcut on your desktop, uncheck the Create Symantec pcanywhere desktop shortcut box.

Follow the on-screen instructions for the type of installation that you have selected. 11 Click Finish when the installation is complete. If your computer requires updates to system files, you are prompted to restart your computer. This step is necessary to ensure proper functionality. See Starting Symantec pcanywhere on page 14. See About upgrading to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 on page 8. Running the setup program manually You can run the pcanywhere setup manually if the installation window does not appear automatically after you insert the Symantec pcanywhere CD. To run the setup program manually 1 Insert the Symantec pcanywhere CD into the CD-ROM drive. 2 On the Windows Start menu, click Run. 3 Type CD-ROM drive letter:\setup.exe For example: D:\setup.exe 4 Click OK. 5 Install pcanywhere. In Windows Vista/2008 Server, the operating system might prompt you to approve this action. You do not receive this prompt if you are logged on to the built-in administrator account. If you want to install pcanywhere on a mapped drive on Vista/2008 Server, you must map the drive using an Elevated Command Prompt. See Upgrading to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 on page 9. See Installing pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 on page 12. Starting Symantec pcanywhere Symantec pcanywhere is installed in the Windows Program Files folder by default. During installation, pcanywhere optionally lets you place a program icon on the Windows desktop from which you can open the program. You can also open pcanywhere from the Windows Start menu.

15 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes Modifying installation settings 15 To start Symantec pcanywhere Do one of the following: On the Windows XP/2003/2000/2008/7 desktop, double-click Symantec pcanywhere. On the Windows XP/2003/2000 Start menu, click Programs > Symantec pcanywhere. On the Windows Vista/Server 2008/7 Start menu, click All Programs > Symantec pcanywhere. Modifying installation settings You can add, modify, or remove certain pcanywhere components after installation. To modify installation settings 1 Do one of the following: On the Windows XP/2003/2000 Start menu, click Settings>ControlPanel. On the Windows Vista/Server 2008/7 Start menu, click Control Panel. 2 Do one of the following: For Windows XP/2003/2000, in the Control Panel window, click Add or Remove Programs. For Windows Vista/Server 2008/7 in the Control Panel window, under Programs, click Uninstall a Program. 3 For Windows XP/2003/2000, in the Add or Remove Programs window, double-click Symantec pcanywhere. For Windows Vista/Server 2008/7, in the Uninstall or change the program window, select Symantec pcanywhere. 4 Click Change. 5 For Windows XP/2003/2000, in the ModifyorRemoveSymantecpcAnywhere window, click Next. 6 In the Program Maintenance window, click Modify. 7 Click Next. 8 If you are installing a component, in the Ready to Modify the Program window, select the program shortcuts that you want to place on the desktop.

Follow the on-screen instructions for the type of installation that you have selected. 10 Click Finish when the installation is complete. Updating Symantec pcanywhere You can receive the software updates that are associated with your version of pcanywhere by connecting to the Symantec LiveUpdate server. You can select the updates that you want to install. To update Symantec pcanywhere 1 Do one of the following: On the Windows XP/2003/2000 Start menu, click Programs > Symantec pcanywhere. On the Windows Vista/Server 2008/7 Start menu, click All Programs > Symantec > Symantec pcanywhere. 2 In the Symantec pcanywhere window, on the Help menu, click LiveUpdate. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions. Uninstalling Symantec pcanywhere You can uninstall pcanywhere using the Add or Remove Programs option in Windows. After the removal process begins, you cannot cancel the action. This process uninstalls the pcanywhere full product version. To uninstall Symantec pcanywhere 1 Do one of the following: On the Windows XP/2003/2000 Start menu, click Settings>ControlPanel. On the Windows Vista/Server 2008/7 Start menu, click Control Panel. 2 In the Control Panel window, for Windows XP/2003/2000 double-click Add or Remove Programs. In the Control Panel window, for Windows Vista/Server 2008/7, under Programs, click Uninstall a Program. 3 In the window that appears, select Symantec pcanywhere. 4 Do one of the following:

17 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes Features removed in pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 17 On Windows XP/2003 Server/2000, click Remove. On Windows Vista/Server 2008/7, click Uninstall. Restart your computer if prompted to do so. This step is necessary to ensure that all components are removed properly. See About upgrading to pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 on page 8. Features removed in pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 In pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 outdated product features were removed. The following features are no longer available in this version: Access Server Symantec pcanywhere Web Remote Symantec pcanywhere Mobile Host Symantec pcanywhere CrossPlatform for Remote and Host Symantec pcanywhere Gateway Host Assessment Tool Host Administrator tool Package deployment tool Web deployment tool NetBIOS and SPX connection type support Support for all authentication types except pcanywhere, NT, and AD for Windows/pcAnywhere and Apple Open Directory for Mac/pcAnywhere and Linux PAM for Linux Option for making passwords case sensitive on the Security Options tab of Host Properties dialog box Option to deploy thin host if host is not present on pcanywhere Quick Connect dialog box Encryption tab on pcanywhere options dialog box Support for the following languages: Chinese Simplified Russian Portuguese

If additional information about an issue is available, the issue has a corresponding article link. Table 1-2 Known issues Issue Certificate is corrupt and user can no longer make encrypted connections. Description New host certificate/key files are not generated if the existing certificate/key files are edited or replaced. You must delete the certificate. The next time you attempt to connect, a new certificate is regenerated. Error appears when a user launches Setup on Windows 2000 SP4. See the following article for more information: You must install gdiplus.dll (redistributable MS package). See the following article for more information: Adding a remote to Favorites does not work. To add a remote to Favorites, ensure that you launch pcanywhere using one of the following options: Built-in administrator account Run as administrator option with UAC enabled UAC turned off You cannot add a remote to Favorites if you are logged on as a local user having admin privileges or as a user from the Domain Admins group other than the built-in administrator account. Quick Connect fails with a file error. If the %appdata%\symantec\pcanywhere\quick Connect directory is deleted, the product recreates the directory with incorrect permissions and the directory contains a zero-byte file. You must delete the zero-byte file from the Quick Connect directory and start Quick Connect as an administrator. You can also uninstall and install the product to fix this issue. 19 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes Known issues 19 Table 1-2 Issue Known issues (continued) Description Users cannot create remote session files for saved connections to a specific host. If the %appdata%\symantec\pcanywhere\quick Connect directory is deleted, the product recreates the directory with incorrect permissions and the directory contains a zero-byte file. Warnings about AWRem32.exe and WinAw32.exe appear in the application logs when you upgrade in silent mode. You must grant full control access to the Quick Connect directory. You can also uninstall and install the product to fix this issue. See the following article for more information: When you upgrade in silent mode, Windows Installer Restart Manager logs warnings in the application logs when a file that requires to be updated is open. To update the AWRem32.exe and WinAw32.exe, you must restart the system after upgrading in silent mode. See the following article for more information: CIF files are not updated in the user interface. Manually moving the old unencrypted CIF files to a system that has pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 or pcanywhere Solution installed does not update the CIF files. The CIF files are updated only when: CIF files are first used You manually run AwFileMgr.exe against the CIF files You navigate to the CIF files in the user interface. 20 20 Symantec pcanywhere 12.5 SP4 Release Notes Fixed issues Table 1-2 Issue Known issues (continued) Description Remote sessions are locked on RHEL 4. On Linux and Mac operating systems, during an active session if you select the Logout menu, the menu is not shown and the session is locked. The user must be logged in, and the console cannot be locked for the remote sessions to work. To reconnect, you must connect locally to the host console and exit from the menu or reboot the host. After rebooting the host, the local user must log in to the host. Connection is not established if a user is not logged in at the console. See the following article for more information: Error occurs while connecting to another computer using Wait for incoming connection. You cannot use Wait for incoming connection on right clicking the remote option. 23 Appendix A Decrypting files This appendix includes the following topics: Decrypting Host and Caller files using awfilemgr.exe GUI tool for decrypting and encrypting the Host and the Caller files Decrypting Host and Caller files using awfilemgr.exe You must decrypt the host files before you send them to the Symantec support or use them with the Symantec Packager tool. To transfer the files, decrypt them from the same computer on which the files were encrypted as encryption is done using the local computer keys. Due to the Windows file system permission issues and the pcanywhere registry requirements, you must decrypt the files from the default location of the computer on which the files were encrypted. Ensure not to include trailing backslashes with folder names and do not include the path when specifying the file name.
