1 SnapProtect Live Browse with Granular Recovery on VMware May 2017 SL10336 Version 1.1.0

2 1 Introduction This lab will guide you through some of the typical SnapProtect v11 operations (also known as CommVault IntelliSnap for NetApp v11), and will cover one use case: Live Browse and Granular Recovery on VMware and clustered Data ONTAP. SnapProtect manages NetApp snapshot copies on primary storage, establishes D2D replication, and also supports movement of data to tape. Another key feature of the product is its ability to index and catalog backups. This allows the backup administrator to quickly search for files that need to be restored, using wildcards or other methods. Indexing is often a time consuming process. SnapProtect has a new features that allows a user to perform granular recovery of files/folders without having the need to index the backups. This feature is called Live Browse. In this lab you will see some of the common management tasks around these data protection operations. While this lab is limited to VMware data, the concepts are foundational and comparable for other data types: ready the data for backup, take a NetApp snapshot, and perform a restore. SnapProtect is an application that uses a single pane of glass to allow users to comprehensively protect their enterprise data residing on both NetApp clustered Data ONTAP and 7-mode storage systems. Notice: NetApp s Integrated Data Protection provides a rich set of tools and technologies for managing and protecting your data. But protecting the data is not enough. You also need to be able to restore the data at varying degrees of granularity - from a single file to an entire datacenter. You need some pretty sophisticated tools to keep track of the data you have protected. SnapProtect is a tool that can be used to manage NetApp Integrated Data Protection, and it provides the flexibility you need to manage the costs of data protection. For product demonstration purposes this lab has prestaged components and does not focus on the installation and configuration of the product. The CommCell Server and Linux Media Agent have been installed and configured. Feel free to explore the product outside the lab activities. This lab does not include all the possible application agents available in SnapProtect, but the same concepts of backup and restore apply to all applications running on a NetApp ONTAP storage system. 1 Lab Objectives This lab demonstrates how to create a Storage Policy, perform a Backup, and perform a Restore with Granular Recovery option. Key concepts and navigation of the SnapProtect UI are demonstrated as you work through the lab activities. 1 Prerequisites This lab assumes that you have an understanding of NetApp ONTAP data protection principles, and a basic understanding of a VMware vsphere environment. 2

In this activity you navigate the UI, and perform the simple task of modifying a property necessary for nested VMware client to back up. In addition you will explore the configuration of the vault options in the storage policy. 1. Launch the shortcut to OnCommand System Manager. Figure 3-1: 2. Navigate down the CommCell browser, and expand the Client Computers. Right click on VMware, and select Properties. Note: When navigating in the CommCell browser, it may be helpful to become aware of when expanding the tree and left-clicking to highlight is necessary. In some cases SnapProtect will not display sections of the navigation tree in the CommCell browser until a highlight, or a left-click operation is completed. 11

You can click Cancel when ou are done reviewing. 20

21 35 Figure 3-27: 3.2 Perform a Linux Backup In this section, you learn how to backup and restore VMware virtual machines and data. The client in this environment is vc1. This system is running the Virtual Server Agent (ida), and is what provides SnapProtect 21

22 communication with vcenter. During the VMware backups, SnapProtect tells vcenter to take VMware level snapshots of the VMs. Once the VMs are quiesced and the VMware snapshot occurs, SnapProtect will initiate a NetApp (hardware) Snapshot copy, and then a cleanup/remove of the VMware snap. A storage policy is used to define the protection model that is used to protect the data. A subclient defines the data to be protected. Each subclient is associated to a storage policy. In this section, you define a storage policy, then perform a backup of a Linux VM assigned to your new storage policy. 1. Expand Client Computers > vc1 > Virtual Server > Vmware, and right click on defaultbackupset > All Tasks > New Subclient. 1 Figure 3-28: 2. Enter name Linux Demo. 3. Click on the Content tab. 22
