Expand the ESX server you installed on in the Inventory viewer of your vsphere client. Select the name of your Freedom Archive Cloud Controller VM. Note in this example we gave it the name of Freedom Archive Cloud Controller. Then select the Console tab for that VM. If your Cloud Controller VM was powered up automatically you should see the Panzura console output providing boot information feedback. Should look like the following screen. Page 7 of 39
Give the Freedom Archive Cloud Controller VM time to finish its boot process. It will take a few minutes to complete its initial boot up. When finished booting you should see the following output on the console. The system uses DHCP by default to get an IP address. It may be that a valid IP address hasn t been assigned in the time that you first boot up as shown above. To refresh the DHCP address assignment information you simply have to hit return at the Username: login prompt. This will refresh the DHCP address information on the console. Page 8 of 39
You don t need to configure anything in the CLI as everything you will need to do can be done through the Panzura Web-UI. If a valid IP address isn t assigned give it a few minutes, and refresh the DHCP address information by hitting the Return key again. Once a valid IP address has been assigned you should see output for DHCP as follows; Logging into the Panzura Management UI for the first time Logging in You can now go directly to the Panzura Web-UI management screen by typing the following URL Replace the IP address shown here with the IP address that was assigned to your VM. Since the default certificate is used for the encrypted communications to the Web-UI you may see a screen as follows; Page 9 of 39
In this example I m using the Chrome browser. In this case click the Advanced link at the bottom followed by clicking the Proceed to {your IP address will be different} (unsafe) link to continue to the Web-UI as shown below. This will bring you to the Panzura Web-UI login page as shown below. The default User Name is: admin The default Password is: admin Type these in and click the Login button to login to the Panzura Management interface. The first screen you will see is the Dashboard which looks like. Page 10 of 39
Be mindful that the Panzura Web-UI has a session timeout. If you sit idle for too long you will need to login again. You should be redirected to the login screen if you timeout. If not simply refresh your browser to get presented with the login dialogue again. Online Documentation for Panzura Cloud Controller For reference you can access the online documentation at the following URL; Getting trial licenses and applying them You will need to request a trial license set in order to setup your Freedom Archive Cloud Controller. The following steps will guide you through that process and show you how to apply them. You will first need to get the unique System Identifier ID. You can get this by entering the Configuration module of the Web-UI. Do this by clicking on the Configuration tab in the upper bar. Then click on the License Manager link in the left-hand navigation bar as shown below. Page 11 of 39
Note the System Identifier shown in the License Manager as shown below. This ID is unique to your ESX environment and will license this VM to this particular installation. You will need this number to fill out and complete the license request form on the Freedom Archive Free Trial submission form. Highlight the ID string and copy it. Be sure that you don t copy and blank spaces before or after the string. You can find the Freedom Archive Download page at the following URL; You will need to fill out the form on this page. The form looks like this; Page 12 of 39
All fields are required so the form must be complete in order to get a valid trial license set. The address used will be the address that the license set file is sent to. It is important that you use a valid company domain address. Trial licenses will not be issued to public domains like gmail.com, yahoo.com, icloud.com, me.com, hotmail.com, aol.com and the like. Fill out the form and be sure to paste the System Identifier (also known as the CCID) into the field labeled Freedom Archive CCID then select a supported Cloud Storage Provider from the drop-down list and click the Submit button. Example shown below; Once submitted, you should be redirected to the following acknowledgement web page. Once submitted you will receive a confirmation regarding a successful submission or a failure message if you submitted a public domain address. Give the system some time to process your request. It could take as much as ten minutes to process your request depending on how busy the server is processing requests. Page 13 of 39
The acknowledgement will look something like the following; Once processed you will receive an with a zip file attached, which contains your trial licenses. It will look something like this; Download the attached zip file to a location on your local PC and save it in an accessible location. Unzip the files as you will need to upload each of the.lic files in the License Manager. Once you have the license files on your local client machine go back to the Panzura Web-UI License Manager page. Your session may have timed out so you will need to log back in navigate back to the License manager screen as shown below; Page 14 of 39
Click on the + Add Licenses button shown on this page to upload your license files. This will expand the Add Licenses section and present a Choose File button as show below; Click the Choose File button and browse to the location you saved the.lic files on your local client PC. The browse window will look something like this (it may vary slightly depeding on the browser you are using). Select the first file and click the Open button to select the file to upload. You will need to individually upload each license file. Page 15 of 39
Note that the file name is now shown in the Web-UI. Now click on the Add License button just to the left of the file name as shown below; You should get the following success message if your license uploaded. Click the OK button to continue. Repeat for each license file. There should be a total of 6 license files that were sent to you. When you are done the license manager should be populated with 6 new licenses that looks like the screen below; Page 16 of 39
Select, by clicking the checkbox, the following licenses; AS-CIFS, Cloud Controller, DS- Dedup and AS-DataLocality. You should see a checkmark next to each of them as shown below; We are only activating this subset of licenses now. Others will be activated later in these instructions. The other licenses have some configuration elements that are needed to activate. If you try to activate them without providing the necessary information they will fail to activate. Then click on the Activate Selected button at the top of the page. This will result in the following confirmation dialogue box. Click the OK button to confirm and continue. This will result in the following success message indicating that the selected licenses have been successfully activated. Your License Manager page should now show those licenses as Active in the Status column on the right-hand side of the table. Example shown below; Page 17 of 39
This concludes the License upload and application section of this guide. Next we will complete the basic configuration tasks required to get your Freedom Archive ready for use. Configuring the Freedom Archive Cloud Controller In this section we will configure the basic elements necessary to bring up the Freedom Archive controller and make it available for NAS services. System Settings Navigate to the Configuration module by clicking on the Configuration tab in the upper navigation bar and then selecting the System link in the left-hand navigation pane as shown below. Give your controller a hostname (be sure that you have updated your DNS records to reflect the hostname and IP address). Give an address in the Location field. This will be used to properly map your system on the CloudFS UI dashboard. Provide an address for reference. Important: Select the Master radio button for the Configuration Mode. Click the Save button to continue. Example screen shown below; Page 18 of 39
You will get a confirmation listing the configuration elements that have been updated. Followed by a success message indicating that the changes have been saved. Note that once the saved changes have been applied a new module shows up in the topnavigation bar. That new module is the CloudFS map which shows your controller on a map and provides top level stats and health for your controller. Network Configuration In this section we will cover network configuration options. Page 19 of 39
Select Network from the left-hand navigation pane as shown below; The first element shown is Network Deployment Mode. For the purpose of this trial we are going to stay with the default configuration of One Arm mode. The One Arm mode configures the controller to utilize a single NIC for both LAN and WAN traffic whereas Inline mode separates LAN and WAN communications. In order to configure the controller for Inline mode a second NIC card would need to be added to the VM first. The scope of these instructions will not cover that scenario. The next section, shown above, allows you to switch between a DHCP and static IP address configuration. In this example we are utilizing DHCP services, which is the default configuration, and as such do not need to make any further modifications. Page 20 of 39
The next section above is a blanket bandwidth limiter. The default is 8Mbps and should be increased to the maximum bandwidth available to the Freedom Archive controller. The more bandwidth given to the controller will directly correlate to the cloud storage read/write performance experience. In this example we have updated the bandwidth limit to 100Mbps. The next section allows you to add static routes to the controller. This is typically not required and skipped in this example. Click the Save button to continue. You will get the same confirmation messages as shown in the above steps. Time Settings This section is for configuring time on your controller. It is recommended that you use an NTP server to automatically set the time on your controller. This is important because time variations can cause authentication problems with things like AD servers and Cloud Storage services. Select the NTP radio button shown in the Web-UI then enter the hostname or IP address for a valid NTP server. Then set the proper Time Zone from the pull-down box. Click the Save button to continue. You will get the same confirmation and success notifications as in the steps outlined above. Page 21 of 39
Cloud Storage Configuration This section will guide you through configuring your Cloud Storage connection. In this example we will configure an AWS S3 bucket and then configure the Freedom Archive controller to authenticate to and attach to that bucket. This is where all of the data will be stored in the cloud. AWS S3 Configuration First create a new bucket in S3 using your AWS console. It is important that you create a new bucket for the Freedom Archive controller. The bucket must be dedicated to the Freedom Archive controller and not shared by other applications or users. Best practices would be to confine access to a user account setup for this purpose so that other users don t inadvertently delete the bucket or any object or virtual directories contained within it. Navigate to the S3 services page and click the Create Bucket button. This will result in the following dialogue box being presented. Enter a Bucket Name and select the appropriate region for that bucket. This example uses the US Standard region. The bucket name must be unique across all of AWS not just your account and in all lower case. You will get an error message if the bucket name has already been used. If you do get an error message change the name and submit the request again. Note that there is a link that provides details on region selection. Upon successful creation Page 22 of 39
of a new bucket it will be displayed in the list of buckets shown to the left. It will automatically select and highlight the newly created bucket as shown below; Details for the newly created bucket will be shown on the right. The default settings should allow for you to configure the Freedom Archive controller to access and utilize the bucket. Be sure that the user account you use has sufficient privileges to create, modify and write to S3 services. You will also need your Access Key ID (to be filled out in the User Name field) and your Secret Access Key (to be filled out in the Password field). These are made available to you when you create a user for you AWS account in the AWS console. Refer to AWS documentation on creating a user and obtaining authentication credentials. In the online documentation you will find details on configuring each of the support Cloud Storage providers. The AWS section shows you where to map each of the configuration fields as I will show in my example below. It also shows where to go to get the proper hostname to configure; Page 23 of 39
In this example we setup the bucket in the US Standard region which is in Virginia. If you go to the table found in the URL above you will find that there are several hostnames you can use. We ve selected s3.amazonaws.com in this example. Depending on the region you setup your bucket in yours may be different. The AWS field mapping is shown below for easy reference. After Hostname you will need to configure a path. You can give the path any meaningful name you like. The Freedom Archive controller will automatically create the path for you. Next you will enter in your Access Key ID into the User Name field and your Secret Access Key into the Password field. Lastly enter the unique bucket name you configured in the AWS console into the Bucket field. These are shown fully configured in the screen below. The User Name field has been partially blacked out in this example for privacy reasons. The Password field is automatically obscured by the UI. Page 24 of 39
After filling out the required fields select the CSP-Amazon license and click the Activate Selected button above to save the configuration and activate the Cloud Storage provider. You will get the following confirmation request. Click OK to continue. Providing all the authentication information has been entered correctly you will get a Success message indicating that the license module has been activated. If there are any typos or the authentication to the cloud fails the license will fail to activate. Your previous information will be saved. Go back and be sure there are no typos or characters missed when pasting them into the fields. Be sure that the bucket name is correct as well. If everything looks good and it still fails to activate be sure that the credentials are valid and have S3 services access privilages. You should now see the Status for the license change to Active from new as shown below. Testing The Cloud Storage Configuration Now that the Cloud Storage provider license has been activated lets test the connectivity and do an Upload/Download test to confirm that everything is working properly. To do this you will need to navigate to the Maintenance module by selecting Maintenance from the top-navigation bar and then selecting Diagnostics from the left-hand navigation pane. After that select cloud-connect-test from the pull-down box under Diagnostic Tools sub-section as shown in the example below. Page 25 of 39
To run the diagnostic test simply click on the Run button on the right-hand side of the screen. No additional parameters are required. As soon as you click on the Run button you will see output produced in the Diagnostics Output window. Let it run until complete. Scroll down to the bottom of the output window. If successful the last line should read; SUCCESS; _CONNECTIVITY as shown below. If you do not get a success message check that you can ping the configured host. If not check your network settings and try from your client to see if that succeeds. If not you may have to troubleshoot your network. Be mindful of any firewall rules that might prevent communications to the S3 services. Page 26 of 39
Next you can do a simple upload/download test. Do this by selecting cloud-upload-test from the Command Type pull-down box. In the Parameters field type 1M 2. This indicates a test of 1MB object size uploaded 2 times. Next click the Run button. The test will execute and you should see SUCCESS messages for both uploading the test objects and downloading the test objects. Example output is shown below; At this point your Cloud Storage provider is successfully configured. Setting up all Cloud Storage providers follow the same process as shown above. Below is listed the field mappings for configuring each Cloud provider for reference. IBM COS Private & Public Cloud for SoftLayer See above example for details in configuring and testing cloud provider clouds. Below shows the specific field mappings for configuring IBM COS. Page 27 of 39

Dell/EMC See above example for AWS S3 for detailed instructions on configuring and testing cloud storage provider connectors. Below lists the specific field mappings for AT&T. This concludes the Cloud Storage configuration section of these instructions CloudFS Settings Next you will need to add this Freedom Archive controller to the CloudFS. This step creates the actual file system on the controller and binds it to the newly configured cloud bucket. You will need to navigate to the CloudFS Settings page by first clicking on the Configuration tab in the top-navigation bar followed by clicking on the CloudFS link on the left-hand navigation pane. This will bring you to the CloudFS configuration page as shown below. Page 30 of 39
To complete this configuration step first select the Operation Mode: For the free Freedom Archive program only the CIFS protocol license has been included. If you would like to test NFS and a Panzura representative will contact you with options. In this example we are showing how to configure for CIFS services so SMBonly has been selected. Next you will need to add this controller to the CloudFS. Do this by first clicking on the + Add a Cloud Controller button. Next enter the hostname of this controller (configured in earlier steps) in the box labeled Hostname (short name): Be sure to match the hostname configured earlier exactly including case. Don t include the domain name in the Hostname field. Enter the network domain name in the field labeled Domain Name: Lastly be sure that Active is selected for the Mode field. Standby is for configuring an HA controller. To finish this configuration step click the Add button. You will be presented with the following confirmation dialogue. Click OK to continue. After clicking OK you should see the following; Your controller name is now listed in the table. Click the Save button to complete this operation. You will get a confirmation dialogue box. Click OK to finish. This concludes the CloudFS configuration settings section of these instructions. Active Directory Settings This section will provide instructions for joining your Freedom Archive controller to your AD domain. In this way all CIFS uses will utilizing your existing AD infrastructure for authentication and authorization services. You can manage access to files and directories in the same manner as you do for a Windows file server or standard NAS device by rightclicking on the folder/file or using the standard Windows MMC. Page 31 of 39
You will first need to navigate to the Active Directory Settings page by first selecting the Configuration module in the top-navigation bar and then clicking on the Active Directory link in the left-hand navigation pane. This will bring you to its settings page shown below. You will first need to configure the Active Directory Domain Name: field with your AD domain name. In this example it is demosp.com. Once done you need to click the Save button to save the configuration. Next you will actually join the AD domain. You do this by providing the Active Directory Domain Administrator username (an account with AD Domain administrative rights). In this example the username is administrator. Next you will need to provide the password for the supplied username. The controller doesn t save this information. It is simply used to join the controller to the AD domain. To finish the operation you will click on the Join Domain button. Anytime you make configuration changes to the Active Directory settings you will be warned with a detach message warning as this would interrupt CIFS services. Next you will be presented with a confirmation that the configuration has been updated as shown below. Page 32 of 39
Finally a success message will indicate that the configuration was saved. After providing the appropriate credentials and clicking the Join Domain button you will see the Status change to Pending on Verification and the AD server servicing the request will be listed as shown below. Wait a few moments and click on the Active Directory link in the left-hand navigation pane again to refresh the screen and you should see the status change to Joined as shown below. You have now successfully completed the Active Directory configuration of your Freedom Archive controller. Connecting to your Freedom Archive Controller for the First Time Using an AD account who is a member of the Administrative group open your File Explorer and type in either the \\IP-Address or \\Hostname of your controller as shown below. Page 33 of 39
This will connect you to your newly configured Freedom Archive controller s root directory \\hostname\cloudfs as shown below. Double click on the cloudfs folder to open it. This will then show a folder for this controller shown below. Double click on it to open it. This folder should be empty. Create a new folder where you will start storing data and call it something meaningful to you. In this example we called it simply Projects shown below. Page 34 of 39
Right-click on that folder and click Properties. That will bring up the properties dialogue box shown below. Now click on the Security tab which will bring up the Security dialogue box shown below. Page 35 of 39
From here you can click on the Edit button to edit security rights to this folder. You can add users or groups to the security profile just like you do for a Windows server or general purpose NAS device. In this example we are keeping it very simple and using the Administrative group access rights which has full control as shown below. Creating a CIFS share that maps to a Target Directory The last basic setup step is to configure a live CIFS share on the Freedom Archive controller. You do this by first navigating to the SMB Settings page by clicking on the Configuration tab in the top-navigation bar and then the SMB link in the left-hand navigation pane as shown in the example below. Page 36 of 39
Next you click on the + Add a SMB Share button which will bring up the configuration fields to add a share. In the field Share Name: give the share a meaningful name. It doesn t have to be the same name as you gave the underling folder in the previous step Connecting to your Freedom Archive Controller for the First Time. In this example we did give it the same name. In the Share Path: field give the full path to the directory we created and assigned permissions to in the previous step. The path should be listed in a UNIX path structure. In this example it is /cloudfs/freedom101/projects. Then click the Add button. This will put the share in the share table and provide a Save button to save the operation as shown below. Click the Save button to finish creating your share. You will presented with the following confirmation and success messages. Click on the OK button to continue. Connecting to your newly created CIFS share You can now go directly to the newly created CIFS share by typing the share name directly in Explorer as \\hostname\sharename. In this example it is \\ \Projects or \\freedom101\projects as shown below. Page 37 of 39
This completes the instructions for setting up a CIFS share on your Freedom Archive controller. Finished This completes the basic steps and examples of setting up your Freedom Archive controller. Your controller is now in a fully operational state. It is connected to your cloud provider of choice Users are authenticating to AD services You ve published a CIFS share You ve connected to that share from a client system.
