2 Overview The DataCore SANsymphony Storage Replication Adapter integrates SANsymphony storage replication with VMware Site Recovery Manager. It enables automated site failover and failback, and greatly simplifies Business Continuity procedures. Operational Guidelines Download Package Included in the download zip file are: DataCore SANsymphony Storage Replication Adapter Installer These Release Notes and User Guide System Requirements 2 or more DataCore Servers running or later VMware ESX/ESXi 5.5, 6.0, 6.1 Servers VMware vcenter 5.5, 6.0, 6.1 VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) 5.5, 6.0, 6.1 DataCore SANsymphony Cmdlets for Windows PowerShell installed on the Site Recovery Servers. 3 Configuration Notes For general Best Practices for configuring SANsymphony software, see DataCore Best Practice Guide (DataCore FAQ 1348). See for detailed help on configuring replication on DataCore SANsymphony servers. For all datastores managed by SRM, the respective Virtual Disks must be replicated to a remote DataCore Server Group. All replications must be of type bi-directional and fully initialized. Both virtual disks must be of identical size. Replication buffers must be configured on each DataCore Server that hosts replications. Spare capacity should be available in Storage Pools that host datastore virtual disks for failover simulation. The amount of required spare capacity depends on the data transfer (write IOs) and how long (time period) the simulation is active. A minimum of 10% spare capacity is recommended; users should check available pool space frequently during failover simulation to avoid depletion. Replication within a server group (local replication) cannot be used by SRM, and will be ignored. All operations such as fail over, simulated failover, and fail back, are controlled directly by SRM. Do not perform any configuration changes or settings while SRM executes a migration plan. Do not attempt to fix a failed or partially executed migration plan by performing any actions in SANsymphony. Installing the DataCore SANsymphony Storage Replication Adapter 1) On each Site Recovery Manager server, install DataCore SANsymphony Cmdlets for Windows PowerShell. To do this, execute the SANsymphony installer, select Setup Type Custom and check the SANsymphony Cmdlets checkbox only. pg. 3

4 2) Download and unzip the Storage Replication Adapter zip file. Execute the installer (.msi file) on each Site Recovery Manager server and follow the instructions in the Setup Wizard. Configuring SRM to Communicate with SANsymphony After connecting to the protected site and recovery site, configure the respective array managers so that SRM can discover replicated devices, compute datastore groups, and initiate storage operations: 1. From the SRM User Interface, select the SRAs tab to ensure that the Storage Replication Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager has been installed and is recognized by SRM. 2. Right-click the place holder for the protected site and select Add Array Manager to initiate the SRM array manager configuration wizard. Select the array manager type DataCore SANsymphony Storage Replication Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager that appears in the SRA Type dropdown field. pg. 4

5 3. Enter SRA connection parameters for the protected (source) site. Specify the IP address or hostname of one of the DataCore Servers for the corresponding Server Group. 4. Repeat steps 2-3 to configure the Array Manager for the recovery (destination) site. Specify the IP address or hostname of one of the DataCore Servers in the partner replication group. 5. Once the SRA is successfully configured at the protected and recovery sites, review the discovered configuration using the SRM User Interface. pg. 5

7 Using the Storage Replication Adapter Restoring the Configuration after Performing a Disaster Migration A disaster migration may be performed when the original production site is no longer operable. In this case, SRM will bring up the Virtual Machines in the Disaster Recovery site regardless of the state of replication. Refer to the VMware s "Site Recovery Manager Administration Guide" for more information. In SANsymphony, all replication sets will be split and the previous replication destination will be converted to a standard virtual disk without replication. In order to fail back to the previous production site (perform a planned migration in reverse direction), the replications must be reconfigured from the former destination to the source once the production site is back up again and before executing a test or migration plan. Troubleshooting For information on viewing SANsymphony Replication status and failure messages, see: These errors/warnings are also duplicated in the log file Logs/DataCore.Adapter.txt log file which is located in the folder where the SRA is installed. Troubleshooting connectivity issues: 1. Verify the firewall has port 3793 open on all DataCore Servers and the vcenter Server. 2. Verify the Host file in the vcenter Server has the correct IP/Hostname resolution for the DataCore Servers. 3. In a Windows CMD prompt, flush DNS on the vcenter Server (C:\ipconfig /flushdns) 4. Verify all DataCore and vcenter Servers have "file/print sharing" enabled on the NICs used for communication. 5. From the vcenter Server, ping the DataCore Serves by IP and hostname. Then ping the vcenter Servers from the DataCore Servers. 6. Enable a Telnet client on the vcenter Server to test that port 3793 is reachable. 7. Verify port 3793 is open by doing the following command from vcenter Server: C:\Telnet "hostname" 3793 Troubleshooting logon credentials issues: 1. Verify the DCSadmin password matches on both DataCore Servers 2. Create a local DCSadmin account & password in the vcenter Server. It must match the credentials on the DataCore Servers. 3. Give Local Admin rights to this newly created DCSadmin account in the vcenter Server 4. Login using the local DCSadmin account 5. Run the Wizard using the DCSadmin credentials. pg. 7

8 6. In the Windows "Network & Sharing Center", check if the NIC's being used for communication between vcenter and the DataCore Servers are in a Public, Domain or Private network. It is recommended to place them in Private or Domain Network. Known Issues The SRM user interface incorrectly displays a GUID instead of the server group name for the remote server group. Metro stretch clusters are not supported in this release.
