3 Chapter 1: Starting With Windows 10 To Turn a Computer On: If the screen is blank, press a key to ensure it is not just in sleep or hibernation mode, or Locate and press the power button To Sign Into Windows: 1. After switching on your computer, press any key or press + + if prompted 2. If necessary, click on your user name or Other user 3. Type your user name or address (if required) and the password To Initiate the Windows Search Feature: Click in the Search bar, or Press + To Change the Windows Search Settings: 1. Click in the Search bar, then click on Settings 2. Change the settings as desired To Put Your Computer to Sleep: 1. Click on the Windows icon in the taskbar or press to display the Start menu 2. 4 Chapter 2: Personalising the User Interface To Add Tiles to the Start Screen: 1. Move the mouse pointer on the Start screen, then click on the white down arrow icon 2. Right-click on the desired app or program 3. Select Pin to Start To Move a Tile on the Start Menu: 1. Click and drag the tile to the desired location 2. Release the mouse button once a space opens at the appropriate location To Change the Size of a Tile: 1. In the Start menu, right-click on the tile to display the shortcut menu 2. Point to Resize, then select Small, Medium, Large or Wide as required To Modify Tile Groups: To name a group, click above the group, type a name, then press To move a group, click and drag the group icon to the required location To Turn the Live Tile Feature on and Off: 1. Right-click on the tile to display the shortcut menu 2. Select Turn live tile on or Turn live tile off as required To Remove Tiles From the Start Menu: 1. Right-click on the tile 2. Select Unpin from Start To Pin an App to the Taskbar: 1. Display the Start menu 2. Right-click on the desired app or program tile 3. Select Pin to taskbar To Create Desktop Program Shortcut Icons: 1. In the left pane click on Lock screen, click on an image thumbnail or [Browse] to change the background image 3. Select the apps for status notifications To Change the Desktop Background: 1. Display the Start menu, click on Settings, then click on Personalisation 2. Click on a default image or [Browse] to and click on the desired image To Change Your Account Picture: 1. Display the Start menu, then click on the account name at the top of the menu and select Change account settings 2. 6 Chapter 3: Help and Support To Set Up Cortana: 1. Click in the taskbar Search bar 2. Follow the prompts To Use Cortana: 1. Click on Ask me anything in the taskbar 2. Type a keyword, phrase or question 3. Click on the appropriate response To Customise Cortana: 1. Click on Ask me anything in the taskbar 2. Click on the Notebook icon 3. Select a category 4. 7 Chapter 4: Working With Desktop Windows To Start a Desktop Program or an App: 1. In the taskbar, click in the Search box 2. Type the program or app name, then click on the program in the search results To Expand/Minimise the Ribbon: Click on a tab to expand the ribbon temporarily Double-click on a tab to expand and display the ribbon permanently To Use the Ribbon: 1. Click on a tab to display the commands 2. Click on a button to activate a command or display a gallery To Use the File Tab: 1. Click on the File tab 2. Click on the desired option To Work With Desktop Program Windows: Click on Minimise to minimise a window Click on Maximise to maximise a window Click on Restore Down to restore a window to its former size To Resize a Window With the Mouse: 1. Point to the appropriate border or corner until the pointer changes to a double-headed arrow 2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse to resize the window To Move a Window Around the Desktop: 1. Point to the title bar of the window 2. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the entire window to the new location To Switch Between Programs in the Taskbar: Click on the program or app icon To display a list of recent files in the taskbar: Right-click on the program icon Watsonia Publishing Page 5

8 To display a list of open files in the taskbar: Point to the program icon To Resize a Window Using Snap: Drag the title bar of the window to the very top of the screen to maximise the window, or Drag two windows, one to the left and one to the right of the screen, to position them side by side To Minimise All Other Open Windows Using Shake: 1. Click and hold the mouse button on the title bar 2. Shake the window from side to side 3. Repeat the above steps to restore minimised windows To Work With Task View: 1. Click on Task View in the task bar 2. Click on a thumbnail to display the corresponding window on the desktop, or Point to a thumbnail, then click on Close to close the corresponding window To Create a New Virtual Desktop: 1. Click on Task View in the taskbar 2. Click on New desktop 3. Click on a thumbnail desktop To Scroll in a Window: Click on the down arrow or the up arrow on the scroll bar, or Drag the slider of the scroll bar To Close a Desktop Program: Click on close in the top right corner of the window, or Right-click on the program s icon in the taskbar and select Close window, or Press + Watsonia Publishing Page 6

If prompted, sign into your Microsoft account To Add an Account to the Mail App: 1. Click on Switch to settings 2. Click on Add an account 3. Click on the account type, add the details and click on [Connect] To Create a New Message: 1. Open the desired account 2. Click on New 3. Complete the details and click on Send To Start and Navigate the Calendar App: 1. Display the Start menu and click on the Calendar tile 2. Change the view using the options at the top of the window 3. Navigate by clicking on the arrows To Schedule a Meeting in the Calendar: 1. Click on New event 2. Add the desired details 3. Click on Save this event To Open a PDF or XPS File in the Reader App: 1. Click in the taskbar Search box and type reader 2. Click on Reader to open the app 3. Click on Browse and navigate to the location 4. Click on the file and click on [Open] To Use Reader: To change the view, right-click and click on One page, Two pages or Continuous To zoom into the document, click on the plus icon Watsonia Publishing Page 9

13 Chapter 8: Working With Folders To Navigate the Folder Hierarchy: Click on a grey arrow beside a folder to expand its contents, or Click on a folder to display its contents in the right pane, or Click on the location or folder in the Address bar To Access Your Personal Folders: 1. Open File Explorer 2. Click on This PC in the Navigation pane 3. Click on the desired folder under This PC to view its contents in the right pane To Create a New Folder in File Explorer: 1. Click on the folder in the Navigation pane in which you are creating the new folder 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on New folder in the New group 3. Type a valid name and press To Copy Folders From One Folder to Another: 1. Select the folders to copy, then click on Copy in the Clipboard group on the Home tab 2. Navigate to the destination folder, then click on Paste in the Clipboard group on the Home tab To Move Folders From One Location to Another: 1. Select the folders to move 2. Click on Cut in the Clipboard group on the Home tab 3. Navigate to the destination folder 4. Click on Paste in the Clipboard group on the Home tab To Rename a Folder: 1. Click on the folder to select it 2. Click on Rename in the Organise group on the Home tab 3. Type the new name and press To Delete a Folder: Select the folder, press and click on [Yes] (if asked), or Watsonia Publishing Page 11

14 Right-click on the folder and select Delete, or Select the folder, then click on Delete in the Organise group To See the Formal File or Folder Path in the Address Bar: Click on the icon just to the left of the address in the Address bar To Change the Way You View Folders in File Explorer: 1. 15 Chapter 9: Working With Files To Create a File: 1. Create your document in the relevant software program 2. Use the Save command in the software to save the data in a file To Explore Files in Windows: Click on File Explorer in the taskbar on the desktop, or Type File in the Search bar, then click on File Explorer, or Click on File Explorer under Windows System in the Apps view To Copy a File in File Explorer: 1. Click on the file to select it 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Copy to in the Organise group 3. Click on the desired folder or click on Choose location to paste the copy in a different location To Rename a File in File Explorer: 1. Click on the file to select it 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Rename in the Organise group 3. Type the new name and press To Select Files: 1. Click on a file to select it this also cancels previous selections 2. To select non-contiguous files, hold down while clicking on files to select 3. Use the key to select contiguous files To Copy Multiple Files: 1. Use or to select the files 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Copy in the Clipboard group 3. Navigate to the destination folder 4. Click on the Home tab, then click on Paste in the Clipboard group To Replace Existing Files: 1. Select the file to copy, then click on the Home tab and click on Copy 2. 16 To Move Files Using the Mouse: 1. Select the file or files to be moved using normal selection techniques 2. Hold down the left mouse button over the selection, and drag the files to the destination folder To Copy Files Onto a USB Flash Drive: 1. Select the file/s to be copied, then click on the Home tab 2. Click on Copy to, then select Choose location 3. Click on the USB flash drive, then click on [Copy] To View File Attributes: 1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the file 2. Click on the Home tab 3. Click on the top half of Properties in the Open group To Delete One or More Files: 1. Select the file or files to be deleted using the normal selection techniques 2. Press 3. Click on [Yes] if required To Delete a Folder Containing Files: 1. Click on the folder to select it 2. Press 3. Click on [Yes] if required Watsonia Publishing Page 14

17 Chapter 10: Working With Libraries To Display Libraries in the Navigation Pane: 1. Click on the View tab 2. Click on Navigation Pane in the Panes group, then select Show libraries To Access Your Libraries: 1. Click on the File Explorer icon in the taskbar 2. Click on the required library in the Navigation pane To Create Folders in a Library 1. Click on the relevant library to select it 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on New folder in the New group, or Click on New folder in the QAT 3. Type a name and press To Create a Library: 1. Click on Libraries in the Navigation pane 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on New item in the New group and select Library 3. Type a name and press To Add Folders to a Library: 1. Click on the library in the Navigation pane 2. Click on the Library Tools: Manage tab and click on Manage library 3. Click on [Add], then select the folder to add 4. Click on [Include folder] and click on [OK] To Change the Library View: 1. Select the library 2. Click on the View tab 3. Click on the desired command in the Current view group and select the appropriate option To Delete Folders From a Library: 1. 18 3. Click on the folder to delete 4. Click on [Remove] to delete the folder To Delete a Library 1. Click on Libraries in the Navigation pane, then click on the library in the right pane 2. Click on the Home tab, then click on Delete, or Press Watsonia Publishing Page 16

19 Chapter 11: The Recycle Bin To Save a File for the First Time: 1. Select File > Save 2. Navigate to the required save location (if required) 3. Type a name in File name and click on [Save] To Send Files to the Recycle Bin: 1. Select the file or files to be deleted 2. Press and click on [Yes] to confirm the deletion if required To Restore Items From the Recycle Bin: 1. Double-click on the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop 2. Click on the item to restore 3. Click on the Recycle Bin Tools: Manage tab, then click on Restore the selected items in the Restore group To Delete Items From the Recycle Bin: Select the item/s, press and click on [Yes] To empty the Recycle Bin: Click on the Recycle Bin Tools: Manage tab, click on Empty Recycle Bin, then click on [Yes] Watsonia Publishing Page 17

20 Chapter 12: Quick Access Locations To Add a Location to Quick Access: 1. Navigate to the location in the Navigation pane 2. Click on the location to select it 3. Right-click on Quick access and select Pin current folder to Quick access To Remove a Quick Access Shortcut: 1. Right-click on the shortcut in the Navigation pane 2. 21 Chapter 13: Searching and Sorting Files To Search an Unindexed Folder: 1. Open File Explorer, then navigate to and open the required folder 2. Start typing the file name (or part of the file name) in the Search box in the top right corner of the window To Search Contents Across All Unindexed Files: 1. Click in the Search box 2. Click on the Search Tools: Search tab 3. Click on Advanced options in the Options group 4. Select File contents To Index a Folder: 1. Click in the Search box, then click on the Search Tools: Search tab 2. Click on Advanced options in the Options group and select Change indexed locations 3. Click on [Modify] and tick the desired folder To Remove a Folder From the Index: 1. Click in the Search box, then click on the Search Tools: Search tab 2. Click on Advanced options in the Options group and select Change indexed locations 3. Click on [Modify] and deselect the folder To Add Properties to a File: 1. Click on the View tab, then click on Details pane in the Panes group to display the Details pane 2. Click on the file to select it 3. Type a tag, keyword, genre, category, and so on, and click on [Save] To Sort a File Listing in File Explorer: 1. Click on the desired heading to sort it by that category 2. Click on the same heading to reverse the sort order To Modify Folder Viewing Options in File Explorer: 1. Click on the View tab, then click on the top half of Options Watsonia Publishing Page 19

23 Chapter 14: Printing To View Available Printers: 1. Click in the Search bar and type Devices 2. Click on Devices and Printers To check the status of a printer: Click on the printer to select it and view the details in the Status bar To Install a USB Printer: 1. Plug the printer s power cable into a power supply and turn it on 2. Plug the USB cable into an available USB port on your computer 3. Let Windows do the rest To Set the Default Printer: 1. Press +, type Dev, then click on Devices and Printers 2. Right-click on the desired printer 3. Select Set as default printer To Pause a Printer: 1. Open Devices and Printers 2. Select the printer and click on See what s printing 3. Select Printer > Pause Printing To Print Files From File Explorer: 1. Click in the Search the web and Windows box type File, then click on File Explorer 2. Navigate to and select the file/s to print 3. Click on the Share tab, then click on Print in the Send group To Pause a Print Job: Right-click on the job and select Pause To resume a print job: Right-click on the job and select Resume To cancel a print job: Right-click on the job and select Cancel Watsonia Publishing Page 21

24 To Share a Printer on a Network: 1. Open the Devices and Printers control panel 2. Right-click on the printer to share and select Printer properties 3. Click on Share this printer, and then click on List in the directory to enable both options 4. Click on [OK] To Connect to a Network Printer: 1. Open the Devices and Printers control panel 2. Click on [Add a printer], then click on the printer to add 3. Follow the prompts to add the network printer To Print From Within a Windows Store App: 1. Display the item to be printed 2. 25 Chapter 15: Microsoft Edge To Launch Microsoft Edge: In the taskbar, click on Microsoft Edge, or Click in the taskbar Search bar, type edge, then click on Microsoft Edge To Browse the Web With Microsoft Edge: 1. Type a search term in the Search bar 2. Press 3. Click on the required link to display the webpage To View the Hub: Click on Hub To add favourites to the Hub: Navigate to the required website Click on Add to Favourites Click on [Add] To Enable Reading View: Click on Reading view in the toolbar To add to the Reading list: 1. Navigate to the required webpage 2. Click on Add to Favourites, select Reading List then click on [Add] To Use Web Notes: 1. Click on Web Notes in the toolbar 2. 26 Chapter 16: User Accounts To Create a Microsoft Account: 1. Display the Start menu, click on Settings, click on Accounts and then Other accounts 2. Click on Add someone else to this PC 3. Type an address or click on I don t have this person s sign-in information To Create a Microsoft Account: 1. Display the Settings window, click on Change PC settings, click on Accounts, then click on Other accounts 2. Click on Add an account 3. Click on Sign in without a Microsoft account, then click on [Local account] To Switch Users: 1. Click on the account name on the Start menu 2. Select the desired user 3. Type the Username/ address (if prompted) and the valid Password To Change Your Password: 1. Display the Start menu, click on Settings, click on Accounts, then click on Sign-in options 2. Click on [Change] and verify your account 3. Enter your old and new passwords 4. Click on [Next], then click on [Finish] To Change Your Account Name: 1. Click on Change PC settings, then click on Your account 2. Click on More account settings online 3. Click on Edit name, make the desired changes and click on [Save] To Change User Account Control Settings: 1. Click in the Search bar and type uac 2. 28 Chapter 18: Backing Up and Restoring Data To Copy a Folder From One Location to Another: 1. Navigate to the location that contains the folder you want to copy 2. Right-click on the folder in the right pane and select Copy 3. Navigate to and right-click on the destination folder and select Paste To Set Up File History: 1. Click in the taskbar Search bar, type file history, then click on File History in the search results 2. Click on [Turn on] if necessary 3. Set other options as desired To Perform a Manual Backup: 1. Attach an external storage device or ensure you have access to the network location 2. Click in the Search bar, type file history, then click on File History 3. Click on Run now To Restore Files From a Backup: 1. Click in the Search bar, type file history, then click on Restore your files with File History in the search results pane 2. Type DIR and press To Change Directories Using Commands: 1. Right-click on the Windows icon in the taskbar, then select Command Prompt 2. Type CD and press To Redirect Output of a Command: 1. Right-click on the Windows icon, then select Command Prompt 2. Type the appropriate command 3. Add > then the name of the file 4. Press To Check a Disk for Issues Using a Command: 1. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop to display a shortcut menu 2. Select View, then select the appropriate option To Perform a Disk Clean Up: 1. In the taskbar Search bar type disk 2.
