Overview This document provides an HP StorageWorks 600 Modular Disk System (MDS600) storage solution for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 (Exchange), based on the Microsoft Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP) Storage program. The ESRP Storage program was developed by Microsoft Corporation to provide a common storage testing framework for vendors to provide information on their storage solutions for Microsoft Exchange Server software. For more details on the Microsoft ESRP V3.0 Storage program, please see Tested with: ESRP Storage Version 3.0 Test Date: 2/20/2010 Disclaimer This document has been produced independently of Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft Corporation expressly disclaims responsibility for, and makes no warranty, express or implied, with respect to the accuracy of the contents of this document. Features This solution implements the new Availability Group (DAG) mailbox resiliency features in Exchange Server The DAG architecture allows two or more mailbox servers (up to 16) to be grouped together for increased database availability. Mailbox servers participating in the DAG manage mailbox database replication and configuration of databases copies. DAG members also monitor database operations and in the event of a database, server, storage or network failure, can initiate an automatic database-level recovery, by activating a (passive) database copy on another server. For this solution a single DAG consisting of two mailbox servers was created supporting 4,000 mailboxes. The mailboxes were 3 GB in size and evenly distributed across 20 databases. To provide mailbox resiliency, each active database was configured with one passive copies. The active and passive database copies were hosted on separate server and storage configurations. With two copies of each database in a two server configuration, each server holds a copy of each database. With no server failures, each server hosts 10 active databases. With ether one of the servers off line, the other server would host all 20 databases. This DAG implementation is described in more detail later in this document. This solution brief describes a tested configuration for deploying Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Enterprise Edition (Exchange) in a 4,000 user mailbox resiliency environment. The performance results and best practices outlined in this document provide tested guidelines for configuring Exchange using the HP StorageWorks MDS600 storage solution, HP BladeSystem c7000 enclosure, StorageWorks 3Gb SAS BL Switch, Smart Array P700m storage controller, and ProLiant BL465c G6 servers. The MDS600 is part of an in-rack 3 Gb/s SAS (serial attached SCSI) implementation that delivers high-density, low-cost external direct attach storage for HP BladeSystem and ProLiant servers. The storage is configured with easy to use management software. End-to-end high speed SAS connectivity enables a high performance storage solution. Each MDS600 supports up to 70 large form factor (LFF) Enterprise (ENT) SAS, Midline (MDL) SAS, or Midline (MDL) SATA disk drives. More information about the MDS600 is available at 2

More information about the Smart Array P700m storage controller is available at /index.html More information about other HP BladeSystem solution components is available at In addition to the best practices described in this solution brief, more deployment guides on HP ProLiant servers for Exchange Server 2010 are available for free download from HP ActiveAnswers at Solution description This solution brief provides tested best practices to help administrators implement the MDS600 for a 4,000 user Exchange deployment, with 3 GB mailboxes. Two HP ProLiant BL465c G6 servers were used to drive the Jetstress load and simulate the production Exchange 2010 servers. This solution is targeted towards a 4,000 user Exchange environment, with the following criteria: 2,000 users per Exchange server in normal operations with 4,000 users on the remaining server with a single server outage IOPS per user (0.15 with additional 20% headroom included) at approximately 150 messages per day 3 GB mailbox quota 2 active Exchange servers Availability Group (DAG) deployment with 2 copies of each database in the DAG 20 databases total with 10 active and 10 passive on each server during normal operations 80 1TB Midline (MDL) 7.2K RPM SATA disks for Exchange databases and logs Storage in this solution is deployed as RAID 1 pairs of disks with more information in the Storage configuration section. ESRP Storage is designed to size the storage subsystem for the mailbox server role, and is not designed to size for other Exchange roles, such as Hub Transport or Client Access Server (CAS). In Exchange Server 2007, Hub Transport and CAS were not supported in a Cluster Continuous Replication (CCR) deployment. One of the differences between Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 is that the latter does support Hub Transport and CAS in the high availability deployment of a DAG. While these roles are supported in a DAG, ESRP-Storage does not help to size for those roles on the same server as the mailbox server role. To help size for these multi-role deployments, the HP Sizer for Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 should be used. It is available at this site: This solution can be deployed in a single c7000 enclosure, or in two c7000 enclosures. Figures 1 and 2 show the front and rear view if deployed in two enclosures. The solution would be deployed in two enclosures if physical separation of the servers within a datacenter or across a campus environment is a requirement. Figure 1 shows an overview of the solution architecture. The Hub Transport and CAS roles would reside either on the mailbox servers or on other BladeSystem servers in the environment. Deciding to deploy a multi-role solution and the details of such a deployment are outside of the scope of this document. This solution guide is focused on the storage solution for the Exchange mailbox servers. 3

Figure 1. Front view of solution in two rack configuration The servers in the blue area are the Exchange mailbox servers that are part of this ESRP. The servers in the green area represent other necessary servers in the environment such as domain controllers, Client Access Servers (CAS), or Hub Transport (HT) Servers, which are not part of this ESRP. The servers in the green area or in the remainder of the enclosure could be other servers such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, SQL Server, Office Communications Server, file & print servers, etc. Configuration of those servers is outside of the scope of this document. They are mentioned here to show that the c7000 enclosures can host many different types of servers along with the Exchange servers. The HP Direct-Connect External SAS Storage for HP BladeSystem Solutions Deployment Guide should be consulted when additional servers utilize storage from the MDS600 across the SAS switch. This guide is referred to in the Storage configuration section below. 4

Figure 2. Rear view of one rack of the solution when separation of servers is necessary The rear view in Figure 2 shows the configuration for one rack, or one half of the solution. The other rack would also be configured as show in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows the same two mailbox servers with supporting servers in a single rack for environments where separation of equipment in two racks is not necessary. 5

Figure 3. Front and Rear view of the solution in a single rack configuration Storage configuration In this solution two MDS6000 enclosures are attached to StorageWorks 3Gb SAS switches in the BladeSystem c7000 enclosure(s). Storage is zoned and assigned to these servers with HP Virtual SAS Manager. Once storage is assigned to a server, it is administrated on that server using the Array Configuration Utility (ACU). The section will describe the details of this configuration. There are two very important resources when configuring a BladeSystem zoned storage solution. The first is the HP Direct-Connect External SAS Storage for HP BladeSystem Solutions Deployment Guide. The second important resource is the HP Virtual SAS Manager x User Guide. Both documents, as well as other important information are available here: Type=SupportManual&prodTypeId= &prodSeriesId= &docIndexId=

Storage is zoned with the Virtual SAS Manager which is launched from the BladeSystem Onboard Administrator by clicking on the IO Bay of one of the SAS switches as shown in Figure 4 and then selecting Management Console. Figure 4. Launching the Virtual SAS Manager Each MDS600 contains two drawers which can each hold 35 large form factor (LFF) disks for a total of 70 disks. Each drawer is independent of the other by having its own power supplies (redundant power supplies for each drawer are an option), its own redundant fans, and its own SAS IO modules. If one drawer experienced a problem with power, cooling or IO, it would not impact the other drawer as long as the problem wasn t through a common external power source or other shared external resource. Each server in this solution utilizes 44 1-TB MDL SATA disks for databases, logs, content indexing, recovery space and spares. Since there are only two copies of each database in this solution, the storage is further protected with RAID via the Smart Array P700m storage controller in each mailbox server. One of the new features of Exchange 2010 high availability is that rather than failing an entire mailbox server to another standby server, databases can be moved or failed over individually to another server in the DAG that hosts a copy of that database. 7

This solution utilizes pairs of disks in RAID 1 mirroring to provide physical disk redundancy and to align with the database level granularity of fail or move over. To maximize availability of those RAID 1 pair of disks, the disks in each RAID 1 set should be provisioned from separate drawers of the MDS600s. Figure 5 below shows the SAS zone configuration for one of the mailbox servers. Figure 5. SAS zone For detailed step by step instructions on how to configure zones, please refer to the Virtual SAS Managers Users Guide previously referenced. Figure 5 shows the storage zoned for one of the two servers in this solution. The Port:53 and Port:54 notation refer to the ports of the SAS switch to which the MDS600 drawers are attached. Storage for the second server in the solution is zoned identically, except that storage is provisioned from MDS600 drawers attached to Port:51 and Port:52 of the SAS switch. In the above diagram, 40 disks are for databases & logs, 2 disks are for recovery space, and 2 disks are provisioned as spares. Spares for this solution can be managed in a couple different ways depending on the operational procedures in place for each deployment. Since the arrays are RAID 1, each array can have a hot spare assigned so that if a disk fails, that hot spare is automatically used to replace the failed drive and the array controller will rebuild the RAID 1 array. A single hot spare can be provisioned per server. With the hot spare, the administration has no control over when the RAID 1 array will be rebuilt. If the administrator wants more control over those operations, a spare disk can be zoned for each server, but not assigned as a hot spare, so that the administrator can take action to repair the array when desired. After the disks are zoned and assigned to the respective server in the c7000 enclosure, the disks appear in the Array Configuration Utility. Figure 6 show ACU with the arrays and logical drives configured. Note that the disks in Array A are from Ports 53 and 54 which reflect different MDS600 drawers. 8

Figure 6. Array Configuration Utility view of logical drives When each logical drive is configured in ACU, Microsoft recommends configuring them with a stripe size of 256KB as shown in Figure 7 below. Figure 7. Array Configuration Utility drive information and stripe size These logical drives are then configured in Windows Disk Manager as a GUID Partition Table (GPT) volume and formatted as an NTFS volume with an Allocation Unit Size of 64KB for better sequential IO performance. These volumes are then mounted as mount points in a root directory of C:\ExchangeData. This name can be changed but should be consistent among all Exchange servers in the DAG since the file system path to the databases and logs must be the same within the DAG. Creating the mount points on the C: drive ensures that the mount points are available as long as the C: drive is online. Creating mount points on another volume creates another unnecessary dependency. Figure 8 shows a portion of the file system. Each directory can be named according to appropriate naming standards, but again, the path for each database and set of logs has to be the same on each of the Exchange servers in the DAG. Below each mount point, C:\ExchangeData\DB1 for example, directories should be created to separate the database files from the log files as shown in Figure 8. 9

Figure 8. File system configuration Figure 9 below shows the DAG design from the perspective of each copy of the databases and which server is responsible for the copies of the databases. The primary copy of each database is colored yellow and the secondary copy is in blue. Figure 9. Server, database and mount point summary The number in the columns below each server represents the physical disk for the corresponding database in the first column and mount point path in the 4 th column. 10

For Exchange 2010 best practices on storage design from Microsoft, please visit For Exchange Server solution guidance, please visit HP at The MDS600 coupled with a ProLiant BladeSystem server and Smart Array P700m controllers is an effective solution for Exchange Server The best practices for this solution are: Ensure firmware and driver for all hardware is up to date. Utilize the HP ProLiant Smart Array SAS/SATA Event Notification Service so that storage events such as physical disk, array and logical disk status events are available in the Windows System Event Log. Installation of the HP ProLiant Support Pack for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 will install this service and ensure other HP software components are up to date. Visit for the latest support software. Ensure that the disks in the RAID 1 sets are from different MDS600 drawers. Read and follow the guidelines in the MDS600 Deployment Guide and the Virtual SAS Manager Users guide. Pay particular attention to how the MDS600 is cabled to the SAS switch and ensure it follows either the model shown in this document, or one of the configurations in the HP Direct-Connect External SAS Storage for HP BladeSystem Solutions Deployment Guide. Before installing Exchange Server 2010, test your storage solution with Jetstress to ensure it is configured properly and meets your requirements. In Exchange configuration, set database ActivationPreference for each copy of the database to align with the primary and secondary servers hosting the databases. Follow the cabling as described in this document. Test results summary This section provides a high level summary of the test data from ESRP and the link to the detailed html reports which are generated by ESRP testing framework. Please click on the underlined headings below to view the html report for each test. An HP ProLiant BL465c G6 server was used to drive the Jetstress load, and simulate the storage. For solutions that utilize a uniform building block style where each building block is independent and isolated, ESRP requires that only one of the building blocks be tested. In this case, a single BL465c G6 with two drawers of an MDS600 enclosure was tested as the building block. However, for production deployments of this solution, two identically configured BL465c G6 servers and two MDS600 storage enclosures are required. 13

Reliability One of the tests in the framework is designed to test reliability over a 24-hour test period. The goal is to verify that the storage can handle high load for a long period of time. Both log and database files will be analyzed for integrity after the stress test to ensure no database/log corruption. The following list provides an overview: (click on the underlined word will show the html report after the reliability tests run) Any errors reported in the saved eventlog file? There were no relevant errors reported in the event log for the storage reliability testing Any errors reported in during the database and log checksum process? There were no errors reported for the checksum process Storage performance results The Primary Storage performance testing is designed to exercise the storage with maximum sustainable Exchange type of IO for 2 hours. The test shows how long it takes the storage to respond to an under load. The data below is the sum of all of the logical disk s and average of all the logical disks latency in the 2 hours test duration. This solution is designed around a 2 server DAG with a 1 server failure service level. It is important to understand the performance of the storage solution in normal operations with all servers hosting 10 databases, and with a single server failure where the remaining server is running all 20 databases. The following table provides performance information for those 2 scenarios. 10 Active s 20 Active s Needed Disk Transfers/sec* Disks Transfers/sec Disks /sec Disks /sec Disk Read (ms) Disk Write (ms) Transaction Log Log Disks /sec Log Disk Write (ms) *This row represents the IOPS necessary to satisfy the 0.18 IOPS per user necessary for that number of active databases in this solution. backup/recovery performance There are two tests reports in this section. The first one is to measure the sequential read rate of the database files, and the second is to measure the recovery/replay performance (playing transaction logs in to the database). One important characteristic of the default test is that these read rates and log replay rates are measured with all databases under concurrent or simultaneous load. The worst case scenario in this solution is when all 20 databases are mounted on one server. 14

Read-only Performance The test is to measure the maximum rate at which databases could be backed up via a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) aware backup application. The following table shows the average rate for a single database file. Read-only 20 Active s MB Read/sec per database 13.2 MB Read/sec total per server 264 Transaction Log Recovery /Replay Performance Transaction Log Replay time to play one log file (sec) 20 Concurrent s 7 Conclusion The information discussed in this solution brief highlights the tested performance results and configuration best practices for an Exchange Server solution supporting 4,000 Exchange users. Testing was performed with the HP StorageWorks 600 Modular Disk Storage with 80 of the 1TB MDL SATA 7.2K RPM disks for Exchange database storage and transaction logs and an additional four disks for maintenance space and spares. The testing demonstrated that the storage subsystem was capable of supporting both the IOPS needed to support the 4,000 Exchange users as well as providing additional headroom. This document is developed by storage solution providers, and reviewed by Microsoft Exchange product team. The test results and data presented in this document are based on the tests introduced in the ESRP test framework and should be used as a guide, but each specific deployment should be tested to ensure that their solution performs to the requirements of their specific environment. The ESRP program is not designed to be a benchmarking program. The tests are not designed to measure the maximum throughput for a given solution. Rather, it is focused on producing recommendations from vendors for Exchange Server storage solutions. So the data presented in this document should not be used for direct comparisons among solutions. 15
