3 Introduction 3 INTRODUCTION MV-1 Diagnostic Unit (MV1DU) is the diagnostic tool software for on-board monitoring, measuring, and recording of vehicle signals. The MV1DU is a system that incorporates a personal computer or laptop and a vehicle communication module. The MV1DU supports vehicles produced by Mobility Ventures LLC using the 16-pin DLC (OBD II) connector. This manual has been produced to assist in the installation and operation of MV1DU. It does not include detailed operation of diagnostic software; however, it will contain navigational information. Please, read and understand the important safety information contained in this manual before installation and use of the MV1DU. It is advised to keep this manual with the MV1DU for reference and troubleshooting. Please, read and understand the instructions before using this equipment. DEFINITIONS, ACRONYMS AND ABBREVIATIONS DLC DTC ECU Parameter PID Tester USB VIN MV1DU Data Link Connector, SAE J1962 (16-pin OBD-II) Diagnostic Trouble Code Electronic Control Unit An onboard electronic module that controls a vehicle subsystem function. A generic term use to describe information that is received from a module (e.g. from a sensor, actuator, switch, etc.). Parameter Identifier An index number used to refer to a parameter within a module without knowing its storage location. Any off-board device that may cause an ECU to enter a test mode or communicate stored codes, PIDs, or status. Universal Serial Bus A universal communication port on computers and other modules. Vehicle Identification Number The MV-1 Diagnostic Unit PC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS The MV1DU SHOULD ONLY BE USED on PCs that meet the minimum specifications listed below: Operating System Memory (RAM) Hard Drive Space Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 (8.1) A minimum of 512 MB RAM for Windows XP A minimum of 1 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7 A minimum of 50 MB Free. It is recommended that there be at least 2 GB of free hard drive space to operate this program. Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

4 Getting Started 4 GETTING STARTED INSTALLING THE MV1DU APPLICATION SOFTWARE 1) Locate the MV1DU Software Installation Package This may have come as Windows Installer Application (.msi application file) via electronic delivery, download from the MV-1 Connect website, or provided on another source of media from Mobility Ventures LLC. 2) Run the Windows Installer Application on the PC and install it locally on the machine s hard drive. 3) There are two separate installer packages. You need to install both to get started. a. First install the main program installer in the appropriate language (English, French or Spanish) b. Then install the flash file installer for the appropriate language. The flash file installer contains the latest MV-1 module calibration files. NOTE: the person installing the software must have administrator privileges on the machine. For each installation, follow the setup wizard for both installer files. First select the MV1DU Installer Package for the desired language. Upon launching the installer package, you may see the Windows Security Warning window open up (Windows 7, 8 and Vista). Select Run to continue The next window will be the End User License Agreement (EULA) acceptance screen. Please read the information and then select I Agree to proceed with the installation. 5 Getting Started 5 Then the Select Installation Folder window will open. It is suggested to leave the default Folder Location of: C:\Program Files (x86)\mv1 Diagnostics\ Then select Everyone for access to the program. The system will start installing the MV-1 Diagnostics Application Software. Then the Installation Complete window will open once the installer has completed the installation of the MV1DU Software. 6 Getting Started 6 INSTALLING THE MV-1 FLASH FILE DATA The MV1DU software stores the calibration or flash files locally on your PC. These will get updated from time to time, so it will require updates occasionally to make sure you have all the latest calibrations available while working on the MV-1. Updates will be able to be downloaded from the MV-1 Connect website. Since you have the application installed already, now select the appropriate flash file installer you downloaded with the application. Open the flash file installer and select the Run button to start the install process. The next window will be the End User License Agreement (EULA) acceptance screen. Please read the information and then select I Agree to proceed with the installation. Then select the Next > button. Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

7 Getting Started 7 Then the Select Installation Folder window will open. It is suggested to leave the default Folder Location of: C:\Program Files (x86)\mv1 Diagnostics\Flash Data Then click Next > The MV1DU Flash Data will now be installed on the PC. 8 Getting Started 8 VEHICLE COMMUNICATION INTERFACE (VCI) START UP Next we need to install the Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) driver on the PC. This is the interface tool supplied by Par-Tech Inc. and is called the MX2. Upon purchase of the unit, you will have received this driver on a CD-ROM inside the case, but it also available for download on MV-1 Connect. Start by running the MX2 driver installation package WITHOUT the VCI powered up. You will be prompted to turn on the MX2 during the installation wizard operation. Your new MX2 VCI does not come with a 12V adapter. Power for this unit is obtained through the MV-1 s data-link connector (DLC). Launch the MX2 installation setup package then click Next > The installation wizard will start to install the driver for the MX2 Once loading is complete, note the wizard is alerting you to Make sure the MX2 is NOT powered on. Then click Next > Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

9 Getting Started 9 Now follow the on-screen instructions to complete the driver installation. 1. Power the MX2 Be sure the MX2 is connected to your computer via the included USB cable 2. Allow the drivers to install The first part of the installation placed the driver software in the computer, now it will complete the install once it recognizes the new hardware. 3. Cycle the MX2 power The MX2 USB interface should enumerate and the middle green LED light on the MX2 device should be on solid. Once all steps are completed, and you see this Read to use message, click the Finish button. Once you are finished, the system will ask to check the firmware version of the MX2. Unless you have specific instructions from MV-1 or Par- Tech Inc., Just click the Finished button. Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

10 Using the MV1DU 10 USING THE MV1DU MV1DU START UP To start the MV1DU software, locate the program file by; Click Start Select All Programs Select MV1 Select Diagnostics Then Select MV1DU You can place a desktop icon by right clicking on the file name and creating a shortcut to the desktop. It can also be added to the Windows Taskbar on Windows 7 and 8 machines. MV1DU SETUP The Setup function within MV1DU allows the user to; Confirm the VCI Device to be used Change the Language Change the units of measurement (English or Metric) Select Setup from the MV1DU Main Screen. 11 Using the MV1DU 11 LANGUAGE Use this to select the user s language for MV1DU. DATA PATH This is where the data files from the MV1DU application will be stored on the PC s hard drive.. PREFERENCES PATH This is where the MV1DU preference settings are stored on the PC s hard drive.. FLASH FILES PATH This is where the MV1DU will store the MV-1 Flash Files on the PC. DRIVER PATH AND NAME Make sure to set the driver type and name to SAE J2534 in the first pull-down menu, and Par- Tech MX2 in the second menu. This information will only be available once the VCI installation has been performed. METRIC Check this box is the desired display units for PIDs is Metric LOGGER Check this box to enable the application and communication logging functionality. Log files are helpful in diagnosing any possible MV1DU concerns. WARNING DO NOT MODIFY ANY OF THE PATH FIELDS FROM THEIR DEFAULT SETTINGS UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY MV-1 OR MV1DU SUPPORT PERSONNEL. MODIFICATIONS CAN CAUSE THE SOFTWARE TO NOT WORK PROPERLY. After making any changes to the setup, hit the OK button. If any modifications were made to the MV1DU application, it will be necessary for it to close to save the changes. Restart the MV1DU application to continue. MV1DU is now ready to be used on the vehicle. 1) First connect the MV1DU VCI unit to the PC using the provided USB Cable. 2) Then connect the VCI to the vehicle using the provided DLC/OBD II Cable. 3) Turn the ignition to the ON (RUN) position. 4) Start the MV1DU application. 12 Using the MV1DU 12 MV1DU NAVIGATION Once the MV1DU application has started, the MV1DU main menu is displayed. Some functions are not available (grayed out) until the vehicle is defined. SELECT VEHICLE Allows the user to manually identify the vehicle connected. AUTO ID Will automatically query the vehicle to obtain the vehicle information by retrieving the VIN number by communicating through the VCI. OPEN RECORD FILE This allows the user to view a previously created PID monitor graph recording that was stored on the PC. DTC LOG VIEW This allows the user to view a previously saved DTC Log Record that was saved to the PC. SELECTING A VEHICLE To manually identify a vehicle; 1) Select the Select Vehicle button 2) Highlight the appropriate vehicle in the menu of choices 3) Press the OK button 4) The vehicle that was selected will be shown within the banner at the top of the MV1DU window and the remaining functions will be enabled. To let MV1DU automatically identify a vehicle; 1) Ensure that the VCI is properly connected to the vehicle s Data Link Connector and the ignition is turned to the ON position. 2) Select Auto ID from the menu 3) MV1DU will immediately attempt to retrieve the VIN number from the vehicle. 4) If the VIN is retrieved, MV1DU will automatically decode the VIN to determine the vehicle s configuration and enable to remaining functions on the MV1DU menu. The VIN and relevant vehicle data will be shown in the banner of the MV1DU window. Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

13 Using the MV1DU 13 MAIN MENU SOFTWARE FUNCTIONS After the vehicle has been selected by either the automatic or manual methods, 4 additional menu options will be enabled. These will be explained below. Module Menu Most of the diagnostics functions available on MV1DU lie within the Module Menu. When Module Menu is selected, a list of the applicable modules will be displayed. Module Menu should be used when diagnosing or testing a specific module on the vehicle. More details on these functions will be explained later in this guide. Network Test The Network test function provides a quick check of all modules on the vehicle networks to confirm that each module is communicating properly. Rear/Clear DTCs The Read/Clear DTCs button provides the ability to quickly retrieve continuous memory DTCs from all modules on the vehicle and allows the user to send a global clear to all of these modules. Clear DTCs The Clear DTCs button will quickly clear DTCs from all modules on the vehicle. MODULE MENU FUNCTIONS The module menu provides a list of the applicable modules available in the vehicle. When a module is selected, a list of diagnostic functions will be presented. In this instance, PCM was selected. Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

14 Using the MV1DU 14 The MV1DU software will always show a list of module features. Those that are marked in Gray are not supported for the chosen module and will not be selectable. The below section details each of the 5 typical sub-functions available for each module. Self Tests The Self Tests selection will provide access to on-board tests for the selected module. These are typically self test functions that report errors in the form of a DTC. There will typically also be a function to clear the DTCs from the specific module. PID Monitor A diagnostic application that allows the user to select, monitors, and record parameters (PIDs) through the vehicle communication network from the J1962 connector. Additionally this application allows the user to control certain parameters (as defined by the module). Controllable PIDs are identified with a # prefix at the beginning of the PID name. The PID Monitor can be used to confirm signal integrity for given components and/or subsystems or to diagnose intermittent vehicle concerns. Selecting PIDs After selecting PID Monitor, the Load PID preferences screen (below) will be displayed. To view the complete list of PIDs for the selected module choose All PIDs then press Ok. 15 Using the MV1DU 15 If All PIDs is selected, the user will then see a screen with a listing of the PIDs available for selection. The PID box will change color (from orange to green) when selected. See image below for description of PID Selection screen features. Other PID select button functions TABLE This will present the selected PIDs in a table view. This is recommended for basic signal analysis. GRAPH This will present the selected PIDs in an overlay graph view. The graph feature is recommended for complex signal analysis. PREF This allows the user to save a PID Preference List (more details below). CLEAR Clears the currently selected PIDs. CANCEL Returns to the previous screen. 16 Using the MV1DU 16 CREATING AND LOADING PREDEFINED PID LISTS When the "PREF" button is pressed in the PID select window (shown above), the user will be allowed to name the list of the PIDs that are currently selected. This saved name will be available for future uses within the PID Monitor function. First Name the new PID list that you are creating (for example Fuel Control) Upon re-entry to the PID Monitor menu, the user will now see the newly created PID list under the listing for All PIDs. 17 Using the MV1DU 17 GRAPH FUNCTION WITH PID MONITOR To view selected PIDs using the Graph function, select the desired PIDs in the PID Monitor menu. The Graph function allows the user to view the data retrieved from the selected PIDs in a editable graphic overlay. This is useful for analyzing variable data streams during diagnostic testing. Once you select the PIDs, click on the Graph button at the bottom of the PID Monitor menu. The following graph screen will open. The data will display in different colors for each PID selected to view. The data graph can be set to the user s preference. This includes changing the range and limits of the graph displayed on the vertical axis, as well as the time settings displayed on the horizontal axis. These settings are adjusted by using the buttons shown below. The first button, on the left, changes the range and limit of the graph. The middle button erases the limits for all PIDs. The third button, on the right of this group, sets the time settings for the graph. The other set of three buttons allow the user to record a series of graph data during a testing procedure. This is performed by selecting the movie camera button. The middle button, the letter I, is the help link for the graph. The red X button cancels the graph function and returns to the PID Monitor menu Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

18 Using the MV1DU 18 FUNCTION TESTS Within the function test selection is module specific procedures that typically require input from the user and/or automated control by the MV1DU software. For example the ABS module will have the Service Bleed procedure available as a Function Test. The Function Tests available depend on the module. PCM Powertrain Control Module EVAP TEST Initiates the Evaporative System test. MISFIRE PROFILE CORRECTION Initiates the engine misfire profile correction test. ENTER SECURITY ACCESS (ICM/PCM) Allows entry to the secure access mode for instances when a programmed key is not available. RESET/CLEAR TRANSMISSION FUNCTION This resets the adaptive transmission settings back to factory default. ABC Auxiliary Body Controller / Ramp Control Module MODULE OPTIONS This allows the user to configure the vehicle options that are controlled by the ABC Module. RAMP CONTROL FUNCTION This allows the user to control the power ramp through the MV1DU System. RESET RAMP SERVICE COUNTER The ABC Module counts the cycles of the ramp. This must be reset by the technician after performing a ramp maintenance adjustment at 7500 ramp cycles. Clearing the counter stops the Ramp Off light from flashing upon startup. 19 Using the MV1DU 19 ABS Anti-Loc Brake System Module ALC Automatic Level Control Module SERVICE BLEED FUNCTION Initiates the Brake System Bleed Procedure for the ABS System. CALIBRATE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR Allows the user to reset the steering angle sensor setting back to center. LAST FAULT CODE SET Allows the user to view the last Diagnostic Trouble Code set in the ABS Module. SECOND LAST FAULT CODE SET Allows the user to view the second to last Diagnostic Trouble Code set in the ABS Module. THIRD LAST FAULT CODE SET Allows the user to view the third to last Diagnostic Trouble Code set in the ABS Module. LEVELING TRIMSET Allow the user to adjust the Automatic Level Control Trimset setting. This function is password protected to ensure this does not get adjusted in error. The password is topsecret. IPC Instrument Panel Control Module ENTER SECURITY ACCESS (ICM/PCM) Allows entry to the secure access mode for instances when a programmed key is not available. RCM Restraint Control Module RCM LOCK PROCEDURE This allows the user to lock the Restraint Control Module. This is done when installing a new RCM. This arms the system with the new module. The air bag will not operate without locking the module. Return to Table of Contents Mobility Ventures LLC

20 Using the MV1DU 20 SJB Smart Junction Box KEY FOB PROGRAMMING Allows the user to program new and/or additional Remote Key Fobs to the vehicle. TRANSMITTER ID Displays the TPMS transmitter ID. LAST TRANSMITTER ID Displays which TPMS transmitter was last used. TRANSMITTER WARNINGS Displays warnings for the TPMS Transmitters. OTHER MODULE MENU FUNCTIONS Module ID The Module ID function retrieves identification information from the module. This may be part number, serial number or other data that can be used to uniquely identify the module in the vehicle under test. This function will typically only be used when directed by support staff. Module Config The Module Configuration function is available to provide 2 primary functions: 1. Programmable Module Installation this feature should be used prior to installing a replacement module to retrieve the previous module s settings. 2. Reprogramming this feature is used to flash a newer version of software onto the module. Note: The Module Config function is applicable to a subset of the modules. 21 Troubleshooting and Software Support 21 TROUBLESHOOTING AND SOFTWARE SUPPORT The following section covers troubleshooting the MV1DU software to assist the user with any concerns that may arise while using the system. In the event of communication problem while using the MV1DU system on a vehicle, perform the following checks; 1) Ensure all cables are connected properly and there is no damage to any of the connectors, pins, cables and hardware. 2) Verify that all LEDs on the VCI are lit and performing correctly. a. If the middle green LED is not on solid when connected, you do not have communication between the VCI and the PC. If this is your symptom, restart the PC before going any further. b. If you are not getting any flashing on the one of the outer green and yellow LEDs, you do not have communication between the VCI and the vehicle. 3) Reseat the cables to the vehicle s DLC connector, the PC, and to the VCI. 4) Cycle the power to the VCI. 5) If available, perform communication test on another MV-1 vehicle. The VCI kit carries a 1 year defect warranty through the tool supplier, Par-Tech. Warranty claim information will be issued after initiating a support request at the above. Do not attempt to reinstall the MV1DU software or the VCI software unless directed to do so by the MV1DU support representative. 22 Glossary of Icons 22 GLOSSARY OF ICONS Load Parameter icon retrieves the users saved parameter sets Clear limits for all PIDs Continue button (tick mark) ends the parameter selection and takes the user to the Live Data Display screen. OSC Mode expands an on/off a step up and a step down control for parameters that the module enables for control. Controllable parameters are denoted by "#" next to their name. Recording control displays a menu, which allows the user to set the time duration of data, captures and how much of the duration will be pre or post of the trigger. Plot format, Limits and Range displays a menu, which allows the user to change the display format for the currently highlighted parameter to Digital, XY, Histogram or Bar graph. The screen display for the current parameter is also adjustable. This menu also allows configuration of "auto" triggers, which will initiate a capture or a beep if the user set limit value is reached. Playback Display tab displays previously captured parameter data for analysis. Data Capture starts a capture of data which, when selected, can be viewed in the Playback Display tab.
