Other separate guides exist for both Windows Vista and Windows OVERVIEW This document is split into two sections. The first section describes how to set up a connection to UoE_Secure on Windows XP; the second describes how to connect once it is set up. Please note that you only need to perform the setup described in this document once. Windows should remember any settings you enter, and can automatically connect when it is in range of the wireless network. NT 0018 Instructions for Setting Up UoE_Secure (XP) V2.0.docx Page 3 of 11
3 SETTING UP THE CONNECTION 3.1 OPEN WIRELESS CONNECTIONS 1. At the bottom right hand side of your screen there should be a wireless icon. On this document, the symbol has a red X beside it, showing that the wireless is not connected yet. 2. Right click on this icon and select Open Network Connections 3.2 SELECT YOUR WIRELESS CARD The below screen should appear: NT 0018 Instructions for Setting Up UoE_Secure (XP) V2.0.docx Page 4 of 11
Right click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties 3.3 SELECT THE UOE_SECURE NETWORK When the the following window appears select the Wireless Networks tab. Your display should look something like this: 3. NT 0018 Instructions for Setting Up UoE_Secure (XP) V2.0.docx Page 5 of 11
Select UoE_Secure from the list of preferred networks and click on Properties button. 3.4 CONFIGURING THE UOE_SECURE NETWORK When the below screen appears do the following:- On the Association Tab select WPA2 from the drop down box at Network Authentication, and then make sure that AES is selected from data encryption When you have done this, click Click on Authentication tab to continue. 8 If your laptop windows logon is the same as your university logon details then tick the box beside Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.click OK. If your laptop windows logon differs to the University username and password provided to you, then please ensure that this box is not ticked. 9 4 CONNECTING TO UOE_SECURE 4.1 LOCATING THE WIRELESS NETWORK SETTINGS Firstly locate the icon below on the bottom-right of your desktop and then right click on it. If you are not currently connected to any wireless network then it will look like the below icon: When you Right click on this, select View Available Wireless connections, as shown below:. If you cannot see the wireless icon on your desktop at all (as it can be set not to appear) then the wireless settings can be found through Network Connections in the Windows control panel, which is available through the Start menu. NT 0018 Instructions for Setting Up UoE_Secure (XP) V2.0.docx Page 9 of 11
4.2 SELECTING UOE_SECURE At this point you should be presented with a window as follows: You should see UoE_Secure in the list. If this is not the case, try refreshing the list by using the refresh network list option in the top left of the window. If none of the three networks pictured above are visible, or have very week signals (1 or 2 bars) then it may be that you are not in range of the Wi-Fi service provided by Academic Services. If there are no wireless networks at all, then it is possible that your wireless is switched off; check this before continuing. Assuming you have found the UoE_Secure network, double click on it to attempt a connection. Windows will then try to connect you to the network. After a few moments you should see one of the following, depending on the settings you chose for 3.6 above. : NT 0018 Instructions for Setting Up UoE_Secure (XP) V2.0.docx Page 10 of 11
In the latter case, just click as requested. In the former case you will need to manually enter your access credentials into a dialog box that looks like the one below: Enter your standard University Username and Password. You can leave the logon domain blank. Press OK to continue. Finally, Windows may ask you to confirm the server certificate, in a window like the one below:- Press OK and you should successfully connect to the UoE_Secure wireless network.
