WE HAVE SOME GREAT EARLY ADOPTERS 1

3 Data cita%on at Springer Nature journals key events 1998 : Accession codes required for various data types at Nature journals and marked up in ar:cles (= data referencing rather than formal cita:on) 2012: Data cita:on included in BMC style guide for all its journals hpps://blogs.biomedcentral.com/bmcblog/2012/01/19/ci:ng- and- linking- data- to- publica:ons- more- journals- more- examples- more- impact/ 2012: BMC launch of GigaScience (data cita:on mandatory) 2012: NPG LOD portal including data cita:ons dataset 2014: NPG Signatory of Joint Declara:on of Data Cita:on Principles hpp://blogs.nature.com/scien:ficdata/2014/03/24/endorsing- the- joint- declara:on- of- data- cita:on- principles/ 2014: Launch of Scien:fic Data Data cita:on mandated for every ar:cle Uses JATS 1.0 with data cita:ons list specifically tagged 2016: Data cita:on policy piloted at Nature journals Strongly encourages datasets with DOIs to be included in reference lists 2016: Springer Nature wide project to support data cita:on in all journals policies
BUT WE NEED WIDER PENETRATION AND AWARENESS 4
5 Research data policy ini%a%ve: mo%va%ons Helping our authors and journals/books publish beper research Promote publica%on of more reproducible research, and data cita%on/linking Increase visibility and reuse of research Improving author, editor and reader service Suppor:ng compliance with research funder and ins:tu:on data archiving mandates Improved guidelines and support for data deposi:ng Improve content with beper links between research data and publica:ons Simplify research data policy and make transfers between journals easier Promote use of data repositories Make data more discoverable and re- usable Create strong links with specific communi:es Improve content display and innova:on Suppor:ng innova:on in research data products/services Understand costs and benefits of research data policies

7 Template policy text Data cita%on permiqed Minimum requirement (Policy type 1 & 2) Datasets that are assigned digital object iden2fiers (DOIs) by a data repository may be cited in the reference list. Data cita2ons should include the minimum informa2on recommended by DataCite : authors, 2tle, publisher (repository name), iden2fier. Data cita%on encouraged or required (Policy type 3 or 4 respec%vely) The journal [also] requires that authors cite any publicly available data on which the conclusions of the paper rely in the manuscript. Data cita2ons should include a persistent iden2fier (such as a DOI) and should ideally be included in the reference list. Cita2ons of datasets, when they appear in the reference list, should include the minimum informa2on recommended by DataCite and follow journal style. Dataset iden2fiers including DOIs should be expressed as full URLs. hpp://www.springernature.com/gp/group/data- policy/policy- types
8 POLICY IMPLEMENTATION IN PRACTICE >350 journals and coun0ng!
9 Data availability statements and data cita%ons policy pilot Policy summary All manuscripts repor:ng original research to include a mandatory Data availability statement (DAS) Cita:ons of publicly available datasets in ar:cle reference lists strongly encouraged where appropriate Makes condi:ons for data availability more transparent to our readership while not introducing new data sharing mandates hpp://www.nature.com/authors/policies/data/data- availability- statements- data- cita:ons.pdf
10 Data availability statements and data cita%ons policy pilot Pilot summary Ran for 2 months (ini:ally) on 5 Nature journals (Nat. Commun, Nat. Phys, Nat. Neurosci, Nat. Geosci and Nat. Cell Biol) from 21 March 2016 Applies to all new submissions and revisions Aim to assess author responses, use of different DASs, compare subject areas, and assess resource impact of even wider implementa:on
