Terminologies A1. Insertion loss (IL) Insertion loss is defined as the ratio of the input and the output power of a device. Expressed in a logarithm scale, it is given by, P Insertion Loss( db) = 10log P Insertion loss of a 1 N splitter refers to the worst-case value among the N different combinations of input and output ports. ouput input A2. Polarization dependent loss (PDL) PDL is defined as the maximal change in insertion loss measured under all possible polarization states of the input light.
