GMSG and AMTC Santiago Forum 2015 Building Towards the Future of Mining November 3, 2015 Mining and The Standards World
The International Standards Organization ISO A Global System + 600 organisations in liaison 163 national members 98% of world GNI 97% of world population Collection of 19,023 ISO Standards 250+ active TCs 100,000 experts Financial Customer Vision & Strategy Learning Growth Internal Process Central Secretariat in Geneva 151 FTE staff 2
ISO develops high quality voluntary International Standards which facilitate: International exchange of goods and services, Support sustainable and equitable economic growth, Harmonization across jurisdictions and regulation Promotion of innovation and lower cost developments Protection of health, safety and the environment Participation of all required stakeholders KS - 2012-06-05
ISO does not write standards Technical Committees Develop Standards Member Countries Approve Nations Adopt ISO does not influence the technical content 4
The ISO Mining Universe TC195 Construction TC127 Earth Moving Machinery All surface mining equipment Home of the OEM and manufacturing countries ISO External Liaisons - GMSG TC Liaisons Founded 1955, Dormant 1995, Reactivated 2012 Specialized surface machinery (drills), underground machinery, mineral reserves, reclamation, mine structures TC82 Mining
Bridge to Formal Standards - ISO TC82 Mining GMSG is not a formal standards organization GMSG has official liaison status with ISO TC82 Supports application of existing standards Participate as a liaison for: priority, seeding, expert engagement in the development of standards, bring mine operators Assist and collaborate with national standard bodies

OBSERVATIONS Issues and Opportunities ISO standards participation dominated by OEMs, Suppliers, Gov t/regulators, Academics Insufficient mine operator presence Mine operators need stronger engagement on surface mining equipment TC82 focus is on legacy iron/structural/mechanical/electrical subject matter not intelligence Increase mining demand/need for operational intelligence, integration, automation, and technology; Improve the whole mining process for operational excellence, not just equipment Collision avoidance, operator situation awareness, onboard data architecture, autonomy, interoperability, tele-remote operations, operational integration, data architecture Need an open innovative environment to benefit mining vs a siloed proprietary constrained environment This is where we need supporting standards Many independent, redundant, overlapping /conflicting Technical Committees, developments, standard bodies, regulators, industry organizations TC251, IEEE SCC42 Critical need to ensure mining participation and leadership especially mine operators TC82 plan to establish autonomous mining and automation sub-committee Regulator is, and will be, active need to engage collaboratively - as an industry
