Skills Canada National Competition Contest Description 17- Web Site Development / Secondary and Post-Secondary May 27-30, 2015 - Saskatoon

1. The Importance of Essential Skills for Careers in the Skilled Trades and Technology SCC is currently working with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) in order to bring awareness to the importance of Essential Skills that are absolutely crucial for success in the workforce. This is part of an ongoing initiative that requires the integration and identification of Essential Skills in contest descriptions, projects, and project documents. Essential skills are used in nearly every job and at different levels of complexity. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. Good Essential Skills means you will understand and remember concepts introduced in technical training. The level of Essential Skills required for most trades is as high or higher than it is for many office jobs. The following 9 skills have been identified and validated as key essential skills for the workplace in the legend below: 1 Numeracy, 2 Oral Communication, 3 Working with Others, 4 Continuous Learning, 5 Reading Text, 6 Writing, 7 Thinking, 8 Document Use, 9 Digital These essential skills have been identified with in section 2.3 and/or 3.2 of your Contest Description. The top three Essential Skills for your area of competition have been identified on your Project and all other supporting project documents. 2. CONTEST INTRODUCTION 2.1 Purpose of the Challenge. The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in the many facets of web site development. 2.2 Duration of contest. 12 hours Page 2

2.3 Skills and Knowledge to be tested. This modular competition will test the competitor s knowledge and skills dealing with: Graphics for the web Web design principles o Colours, typography, structure, etc HTML 5 CSS 1, 2 and 3 PHP 5 JavaScript / AJAX Competitor workstation will have a XAMPP [Apache, MySQL, PHP, phpmyadmin] installed for the creation of each module along with a variety of software. Judges will evaluate the final project from the competitors workstation. 3. CONTEST DESCRIPTION 3.1 List of documents produced and timeline for when competitors have access to the documents. DOCUMENT Judging criteria January, 2015 Project January, 2015 DATE OF DISTRIBUTION VIA WEBSITE 3.2 Tasks that may be performed during the contest Client side coding includes the following functions: Design a web site using HTML 5 9 Utilize CSS 3 to standardize the theme/layout of the website Utilize JavaScript libraries to enhance site interactivity Seeking to optimize web pages through three different browsers Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer (latest stable versions) within various resolutions. 7 Complies with W3C standards. (http://www.w3.org) and is accessible Use AJAX standards Images Images - Create, manipulate, and optimize for the web Use appropriate image formats (jpg, png, gif, svg) DOM Manipulation Use JavaScript to append, modify or remove DOM elements 7 Interactivity 7 Use JavaScript to add interactive elements to the website. Use jquery to enhance website interactivity Page 3

Server side programming Create and/or modify a server side application coded in PHP, MySQL (Example CMS, image gallery, membership application, shopping cart, product catalogue) Utilize Object Orientated programming (Ex: MVC) 9 Essential Skills 7 Thinking (Decision Making, Critical, Problem Solving), 9 Digital 4. EQUIPMENT, MATERIAL, CLOTHING 4.1 Equipment and material provided by Skills/Compétences Canada Computer workstation [monitor(s), English keyboard, mouse, computer] Ergonomic chair 4.2 Equipment and material provided by the competitor May bring: personal keyboard, graphic tablet, mouse (No internal memory) MP3 player (no internet enabled devices) and headphones Pens/Pencil Paper 4.3 Required clothing (Provided by competitor) business casual No cut-off shorts or t-shirts. 5 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS 5.1 List of required personal protective equipment(ppe) provided by competitors No PPE required 6 ASSESSMENT 6.1 Point breakdown POINT BREAKDOWN /100 Graphic Design 15 HTML / CSS template 15 Functionality 35 Security and coding 20 Integration 15 7 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 7.1 Consecutive translation If consecutive translation is required on site, the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this service might not be guaranteed. 7.2 Software requirements If French software is required the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this software might not be guaranteed. 7.3 Computer keyboard requirements English Keyboards will be provided, if a French keyboard is required the Skills/Compétences Canada Provincial/Territorial offices must advise Skills/Compétences Canada National Secretariat a minimum of 1 month prior to the competition or this keyboard might not be guaranteed. Competitors may also bring their own keyboard, mouse and/or graphics tablet with the required drivers. The NTC will not guarantee that the devices supplied by the competitor will work with the host workstations. 7.4 Tie (No ties are allowed) In the event of a tie, the competitor with the highest score in the Objective criteria will be declared the winner. If a second tie occurs, the competitor with the highest score in the Module B and C (objective marks) combined will be declared the winner.
