1 About the Use of this Guide This guide assumes that you are familiar with: VMware vsphere virtualization software and have worked with virtual machines NetApp Data ONTAP software and its features IBM SoftLayer Cloud, SoftLayer Bare Metal Server services, and the SoftLayer Customer Portal 2 SoftLayer Bare Metal Server Configuration Workflow The workflow for deploying and configuring SoftLayer bare metal server for Data ONTAP Edge consists of the following steps: 1. Provisioning SoftLayer bare metal VMware ESXi Server 2. Provisioning SoftLayer virtual machine for VMware vsphere Client 3. Disabling server power management BIOS settings 2.1 Provisioning SoftLayer Bare Metal VMware ESXi Server Prerequisites Before beginning the provisioning process, make sure that the following prerequisites are met: Active SoftLayer account credentials Internet connected computer with web browser and Remote Desktop (RDP) client software installed SoftLayer data center location where the bare metal server will be deployed Bare metal server hard disk capacity and disk type for Data ONTAP Edge Provisioning Procedure To provision the SoftLayer bare metal VMware ESXi Server, complete the following steps: 1. Open the web browser and navigate to https://control.softayer.com. 2. Log in to the SoftLayer management portal with your SoftLayer account credentials. 3. In the SoftLayer Management console, click the Account menu and click Place an Order. 4. In the Order SoftLayer Products and Services dialog box, click Devices. 5. Select the billing rate of your server, whether hourly or monthly. 3 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

6. When ordering SoftLayer bare metal servers, it is possible to order bare metal servers with a VMware hypervisor; however, you can utilize your version of the VMware software and licenses. Note: Note: Refer to the NetApp Interoperability Matrix Tool (IMT) to find out which SoftLayer bare metal server platforms are certified for use with Data ONTAP Edge. If you want to deploy a SoftLayer bare metal server platform that is not listed in the IMT, contact your NetApp Account Team to request a NetApp Policy Variance Request (PVR). For more information about the minimum hardware requirements for Data ONTAP Edge, refer to the Data ONTAP Edge Installation and Administration Guide for Clustered Data ONTAP. SoftLayer Performance or Endurance storage is not supported with Data ONTAP Edge. 7. From the Bare Metal Server Order list, select the server (i.e., Intel Xeon E5-2650) and click the Starting Price Link. 4 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

8. Select the data center where you will be provisioning the bare metal server. 9. In the Operating System section, click VMware > VMware ESXi 5.5. Click OK, when prompted to change the networking configuration of the bare metal server. 10. Select the number and type of hard disks that you want to use with the bare metal server. Note: Refer to the VMware ESXi documentation and the Data ONTAP Edge Installation and Administration Guide for recommendations on disk layout and RAID level configuration. 5 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

Our example shows the provisioning of two 500GB SATA drives for the ESXi operating system in a RAID 1 configuration, and twelve 1.2GB SSD drives in a RAID 5 configuration, plus one hot spare SSD drive. 11. By default, SoftLayer deploys two 500GB SATA drives. Click these two drives and then click Create RAID storage group. 12. Under Advanced Storage Groups and Partitions, select the RAID level for the OS drives and click Done. In our example, we selected RAID 1 and used the entire partition. 13. Select the drives that will be used for the datastore that will contain the Data ONTAP Edge virtual storage appliance. Click Assign Disks. In our example, we selected 12 drives. 6 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

14. Click the last disk to remove it from the RAID configuration. For example, we selected to remove disk 13. 15. Click Create RAID storage group to configure the RAID level for the storage. Select RAID 5 and use the entire partition. Click Done. 7 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

16. Click the Edit Hotspares button corresponding to RAID 5 disk group. 17. Select the disk that was not assigned to the RAID 5 disk group. Click the Done button corresponding to RAID 5 disk group. 8 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

18. Under Network Options, select Public & Private > 1Gbps Dual Public & Private Network Uplinks (Unbonded). 9 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

19. Click Add to Order. 20. On the Order Summary and Billing Page, assign a host name and domain to the bare metal server. 21. Review and accept the third-party service agreement and click Finalize Your Order. 2.2 Provision SoftLayer Virtual Machine for VMware vsphere Client 1. Use the SoftLayer Customer Portal to order a VM for the VMware vsphere Client. The VM will also be used as an administrative host for Data ONTAP CLI and OnCommand System Manager access. The VM should have the following properties: Note: Be deployed on the same data center as the bare metal server Windows Server 2008 or higher 2GB of RAM or higher 1 x 2GHz core or higher 40GB of disk storage or larger 100Mbps public and private network or larger You do have the option of installing VMware vcenter software. If you do want to install vcenter, refer to the VMware vcenter product documentation for the system requirements. 2.3 Disable Server Power Management BIOS Settings Data ONTAP Edge requires that in the server BIOS CPU power management features be disabled. Note: SoftLayer uses Supermicro servers for their bare metal servers. The CPU power management features may vary with the chipset used. 1. In the SoftLayer Customer Portal, open a ticket with SoftLayer Support. Note: In the ticket, specify that you want SoftLayer support to disable the CPU power management features on the bare metal server used for the Data ONTAP Edge installation. (You do not have access to change the BIOS settings through the IPMI remote console.) You can add these instructions to the ticket you submit to SoftLayer: Under Advanced > CPU Configuration > Advanced Power Configuration, select Power Technology and set it to Disabled. 2. Remotely access the VM using an RDP client. Note: RDP clients from any operating system type can be used to remotely access the VM. 10 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc. All rights reserved.

3. Launch the VMware vsphere Client on the SoftLayer VM instance. 4. Select the ESX server. Under the Configuration tab, select Power Management from the Hardware window. 5. Make sure that the Active Policy is listed as Not supported. If the value of the Active Policy is incorrect, contact SoftLayer support to make sure that the CPU power management features are disabled. 3 Data ONTAP Edge Installation 3.1 Prerequisites Before beginning the installation, make sure that the following prerequisites are in place: SoftLayer bare metal server with VMware ESXi are provisioned with proper storage configuration and ESXi login credentials SoftLayer Windows virtual machine with vsphere Client is deployed in the same data center as the bare metal server SoftLayer portable IPV4 private network are provisioned for use by Data ONTAP Edge Public IP address of the SoftLayer Windows VM and login credentials A computer with Internet access, and with the web browser software and an RDP client installed An active NetApp Support Site account with required access to download the NetApp Data ONTAP Edge software Data ONTAP Edge license 11 NetApp Data ONTAP Edge on SoftLayer Express Setup Guide 2016 NetApp, Inc.
