At the high school, a matrix was created due to the fact there are not anchors every single year after grade 8. 2) These checklists are a work in progress. They were completed as of the date of 5/18/2007. 2

Belle Vernon Area School District Math Curriculum Topic Checklists During the 2005-2006 school year a team of math teachers from Kindergarten through 12 th grade came together to review the curriculum at each grade level within the district. Each grade level worked together as a team and created a checklist of the topics to be taught in alignment with the PSSA Assessment anchors, PSSA Standards, and any additional skills needed to be successful in the next math course. Emphasis was placed on creating a seamless K-12 Math Curriculum without gaps or unnecessary repetition. The intentions of these checklists are to: Provide a resource for all staff, parents, and students that shows what is being taught in each course. Insure that all PSSA Anchors, PA Standards, and other necessary skills are being taught when they are needed, so that our students are not taking a standardized test with many items that they have never seen or do not learn until a year after the test. Also, insure that students will have the necessary background skills to be successful in other subject areas. Serve as a guide for any new teacher or long term substitute as to what needs to be taught. Enable communication and collaboration among math teachers Provide a usable document that can be reviewed and updated each year. Serve to strengthen our math department. For each course or grade level a timeline should be established on how long to spend on each topic. Eventually common lesson plans incorporating best teaching practices can be created to help strengthen areas of weakness. Every math teacher and new teacher will be given a copy of this document. Each new teacher should be assigned a Mentor teacher that is familiar with the topic checklists for their course and can assist the new teacher in how to effectively use the checklist to guide instruction. 3

User Guide: Definition of columns used in the topic checklists Content Chapter/Section or lesson Calculator Anchor/Standard Objective Days/Lessons Is the main mathematical or general topic to be covered such as a chapter title like using fractions. Tells where this item can be found in the textbook, workbook, or or other Supplemental Material (listed as SM). The name of the textbook, workbook, and other resources that are used will be listed at the end of the Checklist. For example 1.5 would be Chapter 1 section or lesson 5. In grades K-3 calculators are not used. This column will be used starting with grade 4 and above. C means that a calculator will be allowed on this objective. Displays which PSSA Anchor or PA Standard will be covered. If the objective is not a PSSA Anchor (testable item) then the Pennsylvania Standard that is covered by the objective will be listed. Pennsylvania Standards will have the letters PA in front of them. Some objectives may have neither an Anchor nor PA standard number but still be a required skill needed for the next math course. Clearly states the specific topic to be taught. As an example if the general Content is using fractions the objective may be Adding like fractions. This column lists the suggested number of days/lessons spent teaching this objective. Resources After each Topic Checklist, the textbook name, workbooks, and any additional resources that may be used should be listed such as video, manipulatives, or teacher made worksheets. List all supplemental resources listed in the topic checklist. Assessment Teachers do not have to list all assessments that they use individually, just list the common assessments that all teachers of the same course should administer with some targeted time line. Example: Chapter 1 test, Chapter 2 test, 4sight, Chapter 3 test (end 1 st 9weeks) Chapter 4 test, Chapter 5 test, Chapter 6 then Midterm (end 2 nd 9weeks) 4
