Sitecore guide building a blog Creating the page Log in to Sitecore and open the content editor. In the content tree on the left hand side use the + icon to expand the area of the site the blog is intended for, for example, home for the main site or health for a health blog. In this area navigate to training-and-resources > resources (not needed for portals) > blogs > the current year > the current month Once you have reached the right months folder right click on it and navigate to insert > blog. Give the blog an appropriate name and select ok. The page for the blog has now been created.
Populating the page 1. Title This field controls the title of the page when it is shown in search and listings pages, dynamic widgets and in the breadcrumb at the top of each content page. 2. Intro text This introduction will display within internal listings pages, site search results and dynamic widgets. It is a simple text field which should have the first full sentence from the content copied and pasted into it. 3. Content area This is where the content of your blog will be placed. The show editor button will display a simple text editor where content can be pasted and formatted whilst the edit html button will display a HTML editor.
4. Lead contact This is where the lead contact for the blog will be selected. Choose the relevant person in the box on the left and click the blue right facing arrow to move their name over to the right hand box. Only one lead contact can be used at a time. If more than one are placed in the right hand box only the top name will display. 5. Sector This is where any sectors that are directly relevant to the subject of the blog will be selected. Simply select the sectors you want to move across and click the blue right facing arrow to move each one into the right hand box.
6. Service This is where any services that are directly relevant to the subject of the blog will be selected. This works in the same way as selecting sectors, select the services you want to move across and click the blue arrows to move each one into the right hand box. 7. Meta title The meta title will not show up in the page but instead sits in the code to tell search engines what the title of the page is. It should be no longer than 50 characters. 8. Meta description This text field will appear as preview text in search engine results for that page. There is a limit of 160 characters so you may have to reword the sentence to make it fit here. 9. Louisiana text This is where the Louisiana text version of the title will be placed if it is required, simply copy the page title and make any amendments necessary to make it compliant with Louisiana titles.
10. Display name This is used by Sitecore to build the URL for the page. To create this copy the page title into the text box and select suggest fix to automatically format it as required. 11. Publish This is where the published date will be selected, which will determine the order of events in the listings. Simply use the drop down calendar to select the required time or use the now button to set it to today s date. Preview the blog Before submitting a blog you must preview the page in a web browser, to do this select the publish tab and then click on preview. You will need to save your blog before previewing it and will be prompted to do so if you haven t done so already when clicking preview.
Submitting the blog for approval Once you have completed all the required fields and you are ready to submit your page navigate to the home tab and click the down arrow next to edit to reveal a drop down menu. From this menu click the submit option. You will be asked to enter a comment. This is not required but if there are any additional instructions you would like to add you can put them in here and they will be read before the page is approved. Select ok and the approval request will be sent through to the online team.
