DESCRIPTION CMS-3000 is a wireless sensor system for the measurement of turbine casing cold clearances and roundness. System elements are mounted to three successive blades: 1. Gap Sensor Electronics Module 2. Angle Sensor Electronics Module 3. Gap Probe OPERATING PRINCIPLE A technician jogs a rotor <5 rpm. A Windows Tablet receives sensor gap and angle data pairs which are saved to a Micro SD Memory card for offloading and analysis. Single or dual channel polar plots are displayed to confirm when 360 of rotation have been captured. HARDWARE FIBER OPTIC GAP PROBE The gap measuring probe is a reflectance compensated type fiber optic displacement sensor. The RC type sensor has two detector bundles side-byside. Light emitted from the probe reflects off target surfaces and is captured in two adjacent fiber bundles which follow independent paths back to the electronics. A ratiometric calculation provides the distance measurement which is independent of target reflectance variations; i.e., reflectance compensated. A typical configuration is shown here. FO cable lengths can be user specified. Tips can be threaded or plain. OPERATION 1. Angle Sensor/Bluetooth Battery Module Power Requirements USB @ 500mA Specifications Time To Charge: 4 Hours Run Time: 10 Hours w/full charge SENSOR DATA LINK Bluetooth Battery Module Standby Mode: 4 Weeks Run Time: 3 Hours After 4 weeks Standby USB Charging Port Battery Cutoff Switch Off - Left On - Right NOTES: 1. To charge the battery, put switch to ON position and connect to a USB port. 2. System enters standby mode after 30 seconds when USB port is disconnected. 3. System awakes when PHILTEC s CMS Clearance Software Opens 4. For shipping and storage, toggle battery switch to off position. 1a. Angle Sensor Measurement The orientation angle of the Angle Sensor Module is measured with 0.1 resolution, where 0.0 is at the 12 o clock position. Angle Sensor Module at 0 4
2. Data Collection 1. Turn on the Windows tablet: press and hold power button ~1 second 2. At the Windows 8 tile screen, double-tap the P icon to start the data collection software. The program will start & search for Bluetooth radios Sensors indicator at top of screen will blink while the search and start is in progress Once sensors are found and initialized the Sensors indicator will turn green Data collection and saving to the microsd card starts automatically The default data collection rate is ~7 samples/second 3. When finished with data collection, press EXIT button at top right of screen. microsd Card PWR 5
3. Troubleshooting If sensors cannot be found: An prompt "error on open, check sensors and try again" will be displayed "Open Sensors" button will be displayed in the lower right section of the display Once sensors have been checked press Open Sensors to connect What to check for if sensors not found: 1. battery switch is in Off position? (toggle the switch to the right) 2. cable connection is secure between radio module and mdms sensor? 3. another Bluetooth device (PC, tablet, cell phone) is currently connected to the sensors 4. sensors are within range of the tablet (30 feet optimal but can be 100 feet under most conditions) 6 4. Admin Support An admin screen is provided with detailed info for factory diagnostics. 6
5. Calibrations The inside walls of power turbines are covered with ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) to protect the metal shell from the high heat load. The gaps between these ceramic coated linings and turbine blade tips are measured using the fiberoptic probes. Two factory calibrations are provided with each sensor: 1. a customer provided target sample, such as a TBC target 2. a dull aluminum target The calibration data is stored the Gap Sensor Module in separate calibration tables. Damage to the fiberoptic cables, sensor tips, electronic modules or PC tablet due to rough handling are not covered under this warranty. 7
