2 Development Kit Set-up 2.1 Connect the SOM-M1 to the Baseboard The AM1808 EVM Development Kit comes with the AM1808 SOM-M1 that connects to the baseboard via three board-to-board (BTB) socket connectors. 1. Align the SOM-M1 over the three BTB socket connectors in the center of the baseboard. See Figure 2.1. Figure 2.1 Align the SOM-M1 over the Baseboard 2. Press straight down on the SOM-M1, applying even pressure over the baseboard BTB socket connectors. See Figure 2.2. 8 QuickStart Guide

Figure 2.2 Connect the SOM-M1 to the Baseboard 3. Visually verify that the BTB socket connectors on the SOM-M1 and baseboard have mated correctly. To remove the SOM-M1, pull up on the board above the BTB socket connectors. Attempt to pull straight up and refrain from flexing the printed circuit board (PCB) to avoid damaging the SOM-M1. 2.2 Connect 4.3 WQVGA LCD The 4.3" WQVGA LCD included with the development kit connects to the baseboard 60-pin LCD connector. 1. Align the connector on the LCD board with the baseboard 60-pin LCD connector. See Figure 2.3. The connector is keyed, so the LCD board can only be inserted in one direction. 2. Press straight down on the LCD board until the baseboard ejector levers move into a vertical position. Note: Use caution when pressing down on the LCD board as the solder points may be sharp. 3. To remove the LCD board from the baseboard, pull back on the ejector levers until the connector on the LCD board moves up and disengages from the baseboard 60-pin LCD connector. QuickStart Guide 9

Figure 2.3 Connect LCD to Baseboard 2.3 Ready for Demo Mode The AM1808 EVM comes with a Linux demo image on an SD card. This demo provides a glimpse of the capabilities the AM1808 processor and SOM have to offer. 1. The SD card slot is located on the bottom of the baseboard and is grooved so that the card can only be inserted in one position; the gold connectors of the SD card should face up when viewing the top side of the EVM. See Figure 2.4. Figure 2.4 Proper SD Card Positioning 10 QuickStart Guide

2. Press in on the edge of the SD card until you feel a spring compress and hear a click. See Figure 2.5. Figure 2.5 Insert SD Card 3. Connect the regulated 5V power supply to the appropriate power adapter for the region in which you are using the development kit. Figure 2.6 Connect Power Supply and Adapter 4. Plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet and the 5V line output connector into the power-in connector on the baseboard. See Figure 2.7. QuickStart Guide 11

Figure 2.7 Connect Power to the Baseboard 5. Verify the baseboard DIP switches are all set in the OFF position. Refer to Figure 1.2 for location of DIP switches on the baseboard. 6. Move the power switch to the ON position. After a few moments, the 4.3 WQVGA LCD will display the demo. If the demo does not play, please refer to our "Troubleshooting" Section for common issues and their resolutions. Figure 2.8 Switch Power On 12 QuickStart Guide

6 Troubleshooting If your AM1808 EVM Development Kit does not run the demo image, here are some things you can check before contacting technical support. Is the AM1808 SOM-M1 fully inserted into the baseboard? Verify that the AM1808 SOM-M1 is properly inserted into the baseboard as described in Section 2.1. This EVM Development Kit is not a single-board EVM and requires the SOM (containing the AM1808 processor) to be connected to the baseboard. It is also possible that the BTB connectors between the SOM and baseboard did not fully mate; removing the SOM and inserting it again can sometimes resolve connection issues. Are the DIP switches set to the proper position for booting from SD? Verify the DIP switches on the baseboard are set to the OFF position before trying to boot the SD card demo image. Is the SD card inserted correctly in the SD card slot? The SD card can only be inserted in one position. Make sure the gold connectors on the card are facing up when you insert the card into the slot on the bottom of the board. See Figure 2.4 and Figure 2.5 for pictures of the proper positioning. How do I contact Logic Technical Support? The best method for contacting Logic technical support is to fill out our Ask a Question web-based form: http://support.logicpd.com/support/askaquestion.php QuickStart Guide 17
