Android System Recovery Black Screen with Writing on Start Up (return to TOC) Students may inadvertently begin a hard restart or factory restart of the device by holding down the power button and the volume up button for several seconds when trying to start up the device from a full shut down. This is rare, because usually we do not recommend powering off the devices. This initiates a factory reset, which we do not want to do. If you are unable to see the start-up screen when you turn it on the screen is black and may have writing displayed on it you can reset the tablet to the district settings to make it work again. Method 1: 1. Push the power button and restart the device. 2. If this does not restore the settings try the next method. Method 2: 1. Look at the writing displayed on the screen. 2. Select Reboot System Now 15

3. If this does not restore the settings try the next method. Method 3: (Screen flashing different colors or big red X Or says something about test failed ) 1. Make sure the battery is fully charged. 2. Remove the black, protective cover. 3. READ ALL THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY before performing this fix, pushing a paperclip into the wrong area can permanently damage the device. 4. Locate the slot cover next to the volume up and volume down buttons. This is the right side when you are looking at front of the device. Note: there is a slot on both sides of the device. Please make sure you are on the side with the volume up and down buttons. 5. Use your finger nail to carefully pull the slot cover out and then gently turn it out of the way. The one side will remain attached to the device. 6. Unbend a small paperclip and insert the end of the paperclip into the small circular sized hole. 16

7. Press and hold until the screen goes black. 8. Press and hold the power button until it pulses and restarts the device. Call the Help Desk if these self-help measures do not restore your settings. a. Help Desk. Choose Set as wallpaper from the pop-up menu.\ 7. Exit the browser. Cleaning Recommendations (return to TOC) Dry, soft, lint-free cloths such as microfiber cloths are recommended for cleaning the student devices. 1. Turn off the device before cleaning. 2. Gently rub the device in small circles being careful not to push too hard on the screen. 3. In the rare case where something more is needed, apply a small amount of water (distilled is best) or isopropyl alcohol, to the cloth (never directly on the Android device). With a slightly damp cloth make small circular motions. 4. Keep the cleaning cloth in good, clean condition. 5. Do not use products containing ammonia, anything abrasive, paper towels or tissues (overtime these will scratch the screen). 6. Never spray liquid or water directly on the device. 17
