SUMMARY In 2018, the internet is everything, even our appliances are starting to connect. People today are more comfortable emailing or texting than calling and face time. Although, I hate to admit it, I am a Millennial, everything I do is online, I don t own a radio, and I fact check EVERYTHING. In the age of information, we want to make sure the charities we donate too are worthwhile. Even the smallest business cannot ignore the need to get with the times. This current generation are the workforce, the future parents and politicians. We all need to reach them where they are. My favorite saying is No one uses the Yellow Pages anymore. A website is more important today than every before. A website is much more than a business card, it builds credibility to a ministry. A person will look for your online presence in hopes of finding more about you and wanting to hear a sample of your programming, all before they make the decision to donate or volunteer. When people donate to a cause, they want to know their money is being well spent. Believe it or not, people look up charities and ministries online to see their validity and if it a worthwhile cause. You are a Catholic Radio station, yes, but what does your online presence say about you? Are you portraying a confident, well thought out, ready for the challenge ministry? Or are you static, barely put together, not exactly sure where to start? Will the visitor to your site leave immediately because the site lacks coherent thought? A website doesn t have to be a challenge, it doesn t even have to start out with too much information. Enough information to get you listed on Google searches and satisfy visitors. But it DOES have to look professional. The adage was that a bad site was better than no site, this is no longer true. We grew up with websites and know what looks appealing and what doesn t, we know what we like. a bad site is WORSE than no site at all (Forbes). DESIGN DO S AND DON TS IMPORTANCE OF A MINISTRY WEBSITE It takes about 0.05 seconds for users to form an opinion about your website that determines whether they like your site or not, whether they ll stay or leave (link). First impression depends on structure, colors, white space, symmetry, text, fonts, and images. STRUCTURE Clean, simple design is what people want. Whitespace is encouraged, didn t use to be, but it is now. Your style should be consistent through the site. The homepage can be slightly different than the inner pages, but only slightly. Having a different theme, background color, font, or drastic differences it unprofessional. Your site should be built in a grid system, this helps organize ideas and reading. COLOR Oh, color! So much research has gone into the study of how we perceive colors, it s astounding. When I was completing my Bachelors, I had to write a paper on just this fact. Poor color scheme, poor contrast, and bold and bright colors are immediate turn offs. Color emits an emotion response, and it varies between races, genders, and age. See the Psychology of Color. You can see from the graphic below; a lot of time has been put into this. When you have a color scheme, marketers suggest that the main color should be used in 60% of your marketing, website, business cards, and letterhead, 30% for the secondary color, and 10% for one accent color. If you need inspiration, https://www.colorspire.com/. 2

NAVIGATION Navigation should be easy to use and logical. FONT Good font choices are key to readability. Using a fun font makes a site hard to read. You have to bear in mind those with visual handicaps. You not limited to the basic web fonts, Google Fonts is available to use. GRAPHICS Graphic placement is important because a good looking picture makes your site appealing. You don t want to many graphics to overwhelm the visitor. RESPONSIVNESS More important and easy to do today is responsiveness. A website should look nice no matter how big or small the screen is. Creating a site by hand with straight HTML and CSS will be harder to make responsive. WordPress has it built in and a good template and designer will account for the screen variations. MISC Some random things to avoid: No audio or video autoplay. Give the visitors an opportunity to start the media. Long load times. They will leave. Have a good host. Page too long without reason. All content on a page needs to be broken up and needs to follow a logical structure. Old or outdated information, broken links No obvious button to return to home. No dynamic and interactive content (as small as a contact form) 3

EXAMPLES OF POOR SITES Figure 1 Poor Contrast Figure 2 Poor Colors, Graphics as Buttons, Too Crowded, No Logical Nav 4

Figure 3 Overly Crowded, Poor Color Choice, No Logic Figure 4 Poor Font, Colors, Background 5

EXAMPLE OF CLEAN SITE WHAT TO DO Hiring a professional is not always wanted but should be. It is not always affordable, but it s worth the investment. All the previously mentioned do and don t, plus many more, should come natural to a professional developer. They should have tools in their arsenal. Your website can be an easy one-page website. Yes, one page, I am not crazy. If you are starting out, and you want to be found, this is all you need. Again, it needs to look nice. Color palettes should match your logo, navigation should flow, should be mobile ready, and secured. LET S START WITH STEP 1, THE DOMAIN. Sounds simple enough. I worked with a client who wanted a domain exactly like his business name. This was logical, but the name was so popular that the name would have cost $12,000. This can and will happen with certain company names. Radio stations will not have to worry about that too much. For demonstration purposes, I will take advantage of the non-profit resources I discussed last time. 6

If you have signed up for TechSoup and paid the administration fee for Amazon Web Services, you are only paying $175 for the setup of the domain and hosting. (Although, without help, there may be a learning curve). You can also look for other hosting providers on TechSoup. I prefer AWS. Amazon Web Services offers $12 domains and stable DNS services, if you just want to use it for the backend. Follow the instructions for purchasing. STEP 2, HOSTING: Again, hosting will be up to you and what you are comfortable with. Always select a package that can handle the traffic and the size of your site. If you have a campaign and anticipate many people coming online to check you out, you will need a bigger package. Hosting packages with GoDaddy, for example, have daily caps on resources. This is another reason I like AWS services, I only pay for what I use and it adjusts to the amount of visitors I have automatically. I don t have to worry about usage caps. STEP 3, FRAMEWORK: Whatever hosting you go with, install WordPress. It will make your life easier. Here are some major companies using the free WordPress platform, TechCrunch, The New Yorker, BBC America, and 7

Bloomberg Professional. Recent surveys have concluded that 27% of ALL websites are WordPress based. This number continues to rise year after year. Many hosting companies offer a WordPress installation service. STEP 4, DESIGN: LOGO: We want a design that pair well with our logo. If you need help, there are online tools to help. https://www.canva.com/color-palette/ TEXT: Information on your website should be relevant to what people might search for on Google. For example, Catholic radio Ohio, your website needs to say, Catholic Radio for Ohio. Make sure your story is on there. Why did you start this? What are your broadcasting goals? Who are you dedicated too? And why? People love to connect. 8

DONATE: People want to donate online or via phone. These two options should be readily available to your listeners. Even for now if it is PayPal. Remember the non-profit resources? Google offers a fundraising platform through GSuite, https://onetoday.google.com/. SCHEDULE: Freshgrids offers a good schedule program that can be integrated to a website, but a PDF would satisfy the majority of visitors. CONTACT: Offering a visitor multiple ways of contacting increases the chances they contact you. Address, phone number, email, and online contact form. There are a few plugins that integrate with WordPress that would allow you to have a chat box. SECURITY Secure your site, for yourself and your visitors. SSL certificates for data passing through on a contact form, GDPR checks for your foreign visitors, and malware protection on the backend. Not to be entirely self-promoting, but I do not cost thousands of dollars. I believe that nonprofits need to be afforded the chance to look and act and feel professional. While I still help feed my family, I ve been involved with Catholic Radio too long to see it not excel in the modern era. I d like to show you what I ve put together for the members of the Catholic Radio Association. I ve put together three packages to accommodate for the site of your ministry. Keep in mind the site is built on WordPress and can be fully expanded. My sites are all hosted on AWS, my domains are registered through them as well. Below is a video walk through of the packages. Our team wants to help your station from $300-$750, please visit www.mysticalroseradio981fm.com. If you want us to look at your current site, move it to WordPress, or help you in another way, we can do that as well. The packages can be modified on color, logo, and basic content. Most of the structure will remain the 9

same. Hosting and domain registration are separate costs. Additional functionality may cost more. We offer ongoing maintenance deals that include backups and security protocols. 10
