CO 2 GeoNet: pan-european research association for advancing geological storage of CO 2 Created as a EU FP6 Network of Excellence in 2004 Became an Association under French law in 2008 Founding Members: 13 research institutes over 7 countries Expansion under CGS Europe FP7 (2013-14) CO 2 GeoNet Membership continues to grow 2017: 28 Members from 21 countries
Who we are Our values: Our mission is driven by unbiased scientific objectives Scientific quality, integrity and impartiality. Collaboration, openness and respect for the diversity of stakeholder s opinions. Our ambition: Be the preferred source of impartial scientific and technical information and advice for European and global CCS key players
CO 2 GeoNet Activities 1. Joint research 2. Scientific advice 3. Training 4. Information and communication As an independent and multidisciplinary scientific body, CO 2 GeoNet has an important role to play in building trust in CO 2 geological storage and supporting large scale implementation of CCS Brochure available in 30 languages
International collaboration CSLF Recognised project since 2005 European Commission on CO 2 GeoNet Advisory Committee IEAGHG MoU signed in 2008 GCCSI Member since 2013, Associate since 2014 UNFCCC Climate Technology Centre and Network Recognized research Observer organisation (RINGO) since 2013 Associate Network Member since 2016 ISO CCS Category A Liaison to ISO TC265 since 2014 European Energy Research Alliance Zero Emissions Platform And others! Knowledge exchange, collaboration on joint workshops.
Joint research activities: ENOS (1) Enabling Onshore Storage (ENOS) project Initiative of CO 2 GeoNet 1 Sept. 2016 31 Aug. 2020 (budget 12.1M) ENOS: 29 partners from 17 countries, 5 field laboratories/ pilot sites ENOS has received funding from the European Union s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 653718
Joint research activities: ENOS (2) Enabling Onshore storage (ENOS) project (cont )
Rapid survey systems ENOS early results from field work (wide areal coverage): technologies advanced Leakage associated with faults and abandoned wells: Define expression of leakage at surface (variation temporally and spatially) Source attribution: innovative combination of geochemical techniques Continuous monitoring stations (awaiting deployment) Quantification (scanning laser and other methods) Thanks to Stan Beaubien, University of Rome La Sapienza and Dave Jones BGS for photos
Joint research activities: ECO-BASE Develop detailed and integrated roadmaps for CCUS, including EOR- Store, in South-East Europe. The project is a CO 2 GeoNet initiative
Scientific Advice activities CSLF stakeholder champion for Europe CO 2 GeoNet and UK Carbon Capture and Storage Association (CCSA) are the CSLF European Stakeholder Champion CO 2 GeoNet and CCSA hosted European Stakeholder event, 6 th October 2017, Brussels Key messages for Ministers from European Stakeholder Group Recommendations and practical actions
Scientific Advice activities ISO 265 WG1 Capture WG2 Transport WG3 Storage WG4 Quantification & verification WG5 Crosscutting issues WG 6 Enhanced Oil Recovery The objective of TC265 is to provide recommendations for the safe and effective storage of CO 2 in subsurface geological formations CO 2 GeoNet was granted a Category A Liaison to ISO TC265 in early 2014. Category A Liaisons are organizations that are expected to make an effective contribution to the work of the Technical Committee
Training activities ENOS Through ENOS, CO 2 GeoNet is contributing to three summer schools, an e-learning course and educational programmes Three intensive schools on CO 2 Geological storage are (for new researchers) E-learning course: reaching out to a broad audience (general public etc) ENOS will build a framework for a Master-level course (for MSc students)

Information and communication Annual Open Forum 12 th CO 2 GeoNet Open Forum: Driving CCS towards implementation 8 9 May 2017 (workshops 10 11 May) Key messages from 2017 Open Forum: CCS deployed on a global scale is essential for achieving the Paris Agreement targets No success in meeting climate targets without CCS Urgent action needed to get things moving Sustained policy support is essential CCUS is only acceptable if it ends with S Learning by doing is essential: pilot/small scale projects are part of the process Knowledge sharing workshop: Bringing CCS into new regions developing countries
