Protect Yourself Online Use good online safety practices to protect yourself and others from hackers and scammers! For more info on keeping your technology secure, visit mnsu.edu/its/security Some tips to get you started: Install a good anti-virus program Install an anti-virus solution on your computer and make sure it is updating regularly! Visit the IT Solutions Center if you would like recommendations for reputable, effective anti-virus solutions. Let Us Help You Protect Yourself! Use a long, complex, and unique password Always use a long and complex password. Passphrases short sentences or combinations of unrelated words with a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols make good passwords that are easier to remember than random strings of characters. Remember: Don t use re-use the same password on every website! For more tips on how to generate a strong password, go to If it looks suspicious, don t click on it! mnsu.edu/its/security/passwords Watch for emails pretending to come from your bank, email provider, or any other company. Don t provide your password, bank number, or any other personal/ financial information over email always go directly to the company website via a separate browser window and login there to make sure the request is legitimate. If in doubt, call the company using the contact information from their website (not the email) to confirm whether the email is a scam. spam@mnsu.edu Keep your computer, tablet, and phone updated! Companies send out software and operating system updates regularly to fix security vulnerabilities. Make sure these updates are installed as soon as possible! For help making sure your devices are updating correctly, go here mnsu.edu/its/security/patching 4
