Student 1 Printer Issues A customer complains that his inkjet printer (attached to a computer with a USB cable) is printing funny characters instead of what it should print. He has been using the printer for over a year. He s had problems on and off, but this seems to be a new problem. Also, the printer has been getting a lot of paper jams. Another problem he has is the printer occasionally gives an error message saying Out of paper when it has plenty of paper in the main paper tray.

Student 2 Printer Issues The customer has a fairly new laser printer. Ever since she got the printer, it has been slow to print graphic images. It prints text documents fairly fast though. She also occasionally gets a Document Failed to Print error and doesn t know what to do when this happens. Guide her through solving these issues.

Student 3 Printer Issues The end user has a pretty nice laser printer, but it is getting older (has been in service for many months of heavy usage). Recently the printer prints ghost images and prints vertical lines and streaks on most pages. He also gets a Printer Offline error message from time to time. He never knows what to do when that happens. This printer connects to a computer using a USB cable, but it is shared among several computers in use on the network.

Student 4 Operating System Issues A customer bought a refurbished computer running Windows 7 Home Premium. The computer came with a 200GB hard drive (SATA) and 1 GB of RAM. The user has used other computers and feels like this computer is really slow. This computer was bought off Craig s List so the customer doesn t know how the seller refurbished the computer.

Student 5 Operating System Issues A Windows 7 user plugs in a USB device that is not recognized by the operating system. What are his options? He has used this device on other computers recently with no issues. Also, the Device Manager shows a couple of problems with devices. Describe the steps one would take to solve issues with the Device Manager.

Student 6 Operating System Issues An end-user explains that he wants to upgrade an old XP machine to Windows 7. The machine has a 160GB IDE hard drive installed and 1GB of RAM. During the installation, he gets a blue screen with a STOP code. As instructed, he tried the installation again. Again... a blue screen. How will he troubleshoot this problem and resolve the issue?

Student 7 Operating System Issues A computer user boots up her Windows 7 machine and is given a choice of Start Windows Normally or Launch Repair. The user chooses to start windows normally, and it reboots during the loading of Windows 7. So... she chooses Launch Repair but the operating system says it cannot be repaired. She restarts the computer only to have the same two choices. What are her options?

Student 8 Operating System Issues A computer user starts up a Windows Vista machine, and it loads the operating system just fine. However, after two or three minutes, the computer spontaneously reboots. After Vista loads again, the computer turns off after a few minutes. Start troubleshooting.

Student 9 Operating System Issues A Windows 7 user is attempting to install a new application. The computer has a 300GB SATA hard drive, 4 GB of RAM, and a decent processor. The application continues to return a message that the application cannot be installed. Any options?

Student 10 Operating System Issues A user attempts to load an application that she has been using consistently and now gets an error message saying Missing or corrupt DLL. She reboots the computer, loads Windows 7, and attempts to run the application again. Same error.

Student 11 Operating System Issues A user is running Windows 7 Professional. A new problem has surfaced. He cannot complete Windows updates any longer. He did so about a month ago but now the updates fail. What steps should he take to resolve this problem?

Student 12 Network Issues A Windows Vista user boots up his computer and attempts to access the Internet. Page cannot be displayed error is returned. She refreshes the screen and gets the same error. She is using a cable modem with a wireless router connected. However, this computer is connected by an Ethernet cable to the router and so is not using wireless. Where does she start troubleshooting?

Student 13 Network Issues A Windows 7 user attempts to access the Internet. She is unable to connect. She opens the Network and Sharing Center. There appears to be network access but there is an X between the wireless router she uses and the Internet. How can this issue be resolved?

Student 14 Laptop Issues A user tells you his Dell laptop is running Windows 7. The system is set up to automatically shut down the display after 30 minutes and then put the computer to sleep after 2 hours. That works fine, however, when trying to wake up the computer after sleep, he heard the fan starting up but nothing else happens. No display ever comes up. He is forced to shut the computer off (using the power button) and then restart it. When it does start up, it's resuming from sleep mode. What could be the problem?

Student 15 Laptop Issues A fairly savvy computer user discovers that his laptop will only turn on when plugged in. The battery alone doesn t power the laptop. Then he determined that his hard drive (SATA) died. He replaced the hard drive with a compatible hard drive but during the re-installation of Windows 7, he cannot access the hard drive. Where does he start troubleshooting?

Student 16 Security Issues Your contacts are receiving spam from your e-mail account. Has your e-mail account been hacked? What steps can you take to prevent further problems?

Student 17 Maintenance Issues A user has had her laptop computer for several years. It has been running Windows 7 with no issues over the course of the last few years. Recently the computer seems to make a humming noise that she cannot identify. Outline some steps she could take to do some hardware and software maintenance along with assessing where the humming noise is coming from.

Student 18 Components and Peripherals A user with a Windows 7 desktop cannot get any sound from her computer. This is a new problem. Sound was working just fine until today. She hasn t installed any new software or changed any hardware, cables, etc. Where should she start troubleshooting this sound issue?

Student 19 Components and Peripherals A Windows 7 Home Premium desktop computer has a DVD writer which has worked just fine for a couple of years. Now the user inserts a blank DVD into the drive to burn an iso file and the computer reports there is no disc in the drive. Where should the user start troubleshooting this issue?

Student 20 Components and Peripherals A computer running Windows Vista is no longer loading the operating system. The user suspects issues with the IDE hard drive. The user replaces the IDE hard drive in order to reinstall the operating system but during the installation, the computer reports it cannot find a hard drive. What steps should be taken to resolve this problem? 1
